Opis:
Oak decline is insufficiently described problem. Declining oaks are in various age and the most commonly observed symptoms of the disease include growth inhibition and buds mortality. The dieback occurs periodically, mainly because of the impact of abiotic factors (drought, frost and the lowering of the groundwater level). In this complex phenomenon the biological factors, including numerous species of Chromista (Chromalveolata) and fungi play important role as well. The list of pathogens responsible for the dieback includes numerous species of Pythium and Phytophthora, as well as Biscogniauxia, Discula, Pleurophoma, Botryosphaeria and Diplodia. Among other organisms responsible for the oak decline are fungi belonging to Fusarium species. The aim of this study was to investigate the species composition of pathogens colonizing the dying oak buds including undeveloped or dying shoots obtained from Łomża, Rudka and Czarna Białostocka forest districts (eastern Poland). Sampling of symptomatic shoots of Quercus robur L. was performed in 2013, respecting different parts of tree crowns (top, central and bottom). Mycological material for analysis included mycelium growing on dying shoots after incubation in a chamber and tissue collected from symptomatic shoots and placed on PDA medium. For selected isolates of fungi the identification was confirmed by the PCR analysis using ITS1 and ITS4 primers. Among analyzed fungi Fusarium spp., Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Botryosphaeria quercuum and /em>Coniothyrium spp. required special attention. The Fusarium spp. group of fungi dominated with an average frequency of 32%. The molecular analysis revealed the presence of several species including Fusarium avenaceum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Lophiostoma corticola and Nectria mauritiicola.

Opis:
In this paper we discuss the data on presence of truffles (Tuber spp.) in Polish literature and culture through the ages. The aim of this article was to give the historical data on truffles as well as the new ones together with the ongoing research on that ultimate fungi. Study concerning widely understood history of and research on truffles in Poland was based on review of literature dating back to XVII century. A total of 67 books and articles were reviewed. Given the rich body of literature, especially in the past centuries, we have come to the conclusion that truffles were well known to the Poles (at least to the nobles and the rich). Some factors determining truffle forgetfulness after the Second World War are given in respect to social, cultural and forests' management changes. The following reasons can be highlighted: (1) changes in the forest cover, which in 1945 was only 20.8% and furthermore unfavorable changes in the forest struc− ture, the tree species composition and the management (undergrowth shading the forest floor) for truffle development; (2) changes in the structure of forest ownership and management, especially disappearance of traditional ways of forest use, such as cattle grazing and brushwood collecting; (3) changes of Polish State borders resulting in significant area of soils, which are conducive to truffles growing (chernozem) coming into the borders of Ukrainian territory; (4) social changes resulted from the extermination and deportations of Polish aristocracy and intelligentsia (including foresters) – knowledgeable social group of people regarding truffle col− lection, use and cultivation as well as migration of people from rural to urban areas and emigra− tion from Poland, and (5) the fact that in time of communists regime there was no room to promote the gourmet products, especially if it was associated with the aristocracy. In consequence, truffles went into oblivion. Furthermore, the aspects of promotion and establishment of truffle orchards in Poland in the last decade are also presented. Based on the authors findings is clearly shown that there is a great potential towards promotion and growing truffles in Poland, especially Tuber aestivum Vittad. known as summer or Burgundy truffle. This species has a wide range in Europe and plasticity to different climatic conditions.

Opis:
Root−feeding insects are an increasingly studied group of herbivores, whose impact on plant productivity and are some of the most damaging forest pests in Europe. Due to the mass feeding on the roots of seedlings and older trees in young plantation and stands, Melolonthinae larvae are classified as pests, which are the most dangerous on the land dedicated to afforestation. The research was located in the Wyszków Forest District (52°43'15' N; 21°39'03' E) on the mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest habitats. This study evaluated sawdust traps as the method for assessing abundance of Melolonthinae larvae in Scots pine plantations established artificially from open nursery, container production, and from natural regeneration. In spring 2015 i) ‘small sawdust pits’ in rows between seedlings, and ii) pits without soil in adjacent inter−rows as control were prepared. In spring and autumn 2016, and in spring 2017 sawdust and soil from both variants of pits were sieved and Melolonthinae larvae were counted and compared. The obtained results were analyzed in two ways. The first analysis compared the occurrence of grubs in small pits with or without sawdust, while the other one analysed influence of the time of making small pits, independently for the variant with or without sawdust. The final stage was to compare the number of Melolonthinae larvae in small pits between the origin of the seedlings. We found a greater number of grubs in spring assessment than in autumn. Both kinds of small pits showed higher number of Melolonthinae larvae when compared to traditional method of ‘great pits’. The number of Melolonthinae larvae was significantly higher on the plots with container seedlings than the others. The conceptual assumptions of this alternative and environmentally safe method of ‘sawdust traps’ seems to be optimistic.

Many pathogenes of Phytophthora genera (P. cactorum, P. citricola, P. cinnamomi and P. citrophthora) are present in the forest and ornamental nurseries all over the Europe. They cause serious disease of many of forest tree species (f.ex. alder, oak and beech). Infected seedlings in nurseries when planted along river plantations are the main source of infection which spread further down of the stream. More research about this phenomen is needed in Poland.

Opis:
A review of present knowledge on the sawyer beetles, Monochamus spp. as the potential and actual vectors of, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is given. The pine wilt nematode (PWN) can cause considerable damage of pine stands in Europe if it were imported here (lately appeared in Portugal) and distributed throughout the area. This may be accomplished by the natural vectors of the PWN – the pine sawyer beetles: (1) exotic, imported with the wood or (2) native, that had contacted the infected wood. Regarding these scenarios, biology, distribution and known relations to Bursaphelenhus nematodes are given. It is concluded, that despite the vector potential of native and exotic sawyer beetles, the pine wilt nematode will meet climatic obstacle to develop in central and northern Europe.

Phytophthora species are best known as pathogens of agricultural crops (e.g. P. infestans), but there are also invasive pathogens destroying forest atands (e.g. P. ramorum in the USA) or even whole forest ecosystems (e.g. P. cinnamomi in Australia). Still, little is known about indiginous species, especially in wild ecosystems. Rhododendrons are well known as a reservuar for oomycetes’ development. The main objectives of the present study were to develop the new tool for the identification of pathogenic Phytophthora and Phytium based on DNA sequence analysis of the ITS1, 5.8S gene and ITS2 region. Rhododendrons leaves served as specific plant baits. In order to reach the goal the real time PCR, the nested PCR and the DNA sequencing of the rDNA ITS region were carried out. The genomic DNA was extracted form the symptomatic rhododendron leaves. Three distinct Oomycetes species: Phytophthora cactorum, Pythium mercuriale and em>Pythium recalcitrans were detected in rhododendron leaves and registered in GenBank.

This study evaluated the environmental risk drivers affecting the occurrence of cockchafer grubs in mature stands bordering with open spaces. The following factors were taken into the consideration: the distance from the edge towards the forest interior, the forest site type, species composition, canopy openness and the cover of forest floor with vegetation as well as cutting treatment in some of the investigated stands. In one of the biggest cockchafer outbreak centers in Poland (Lubaczów Forest District; SE Poland) 6 mature stands were chosen and estalished 5 transects in each of them. Each transect was 250 m long and consisted of 6 pits (1×0.5×0.5 m) in a regular distance of 50 m with the first pit on an open space bordering with forest. Pits were used to determine the grub infestation of the soil. In the area of 100 m² around the pit, the general vegetation cover and tree species composition of a stand were characterized. The forest light environment was defined by hemispherical photography. The distance in transect and the fact that stand was harvested were also taken into consideration. The applied logistic regression model demonstrated that the site fertility is the most important factor that significantly increases the risk of cockchafer grubs occurrence. The other characteristics that also cause that stand is more attractive for the cockchafer grubs are: participation of the broadleaved species in stand composition and the dense vegetation cover. Furthermore, the cockchafer grubs occurrence was more frequent in the forest interior than in an open space or at the forest−meadow ecotone.

Beech decline phenomenon has been observed in Poland since the 1980s. The reasons are still unclear but the discovery of pathogens genus Phytophthora shed a new light on it. Stems as well as roots of beech trees were severely affected by P. citricola and P. cambivora. In order to find out the genetic background of infection, three loci of chloroplast microsatellite DNA were investigated in the genetic differentiation study of beeches growing in the Siewierz Forest District in Poland. Parameters of genetic diversity (h Nei) and differentiation (GST) in the chloroplast genome were estimated and compared between healthy and damaged trees. Healthy beeches were more heterozygous (h=0.243) than the damaged ones (h=0.113), and the distribution of cpDNA alleles was different between these two groups. Healthy trees were nearly 50% more genetically diversed than declining ones.
