Opis:
The paper presents research results on the extent and rate of horizontal and vertical infection spread process inside fir stems as a result of bark stripping by game and factors determining infection development. The material collected in the stands of the Forest Experimental Station in Krynica (Beskid Sądecki) allows to state that the infection affected exclusively those tree rings which had been formed before wounding. The radial spread of the infection was on average 17% of the cross−sectional area of the stem at a height of the wound centre, and the axial spread was maximally up to 3 m above the ground level. The average rate of horizontal spread of decay inward the stem was 2% of the cross−sectional area per year and that of the movement of decay fungi up and down the tree – 4.7 cm per year. The most important factors affecting infection development inside the stem were: the per cent of wound closure, age and wound size, as well as tree dimensions at the time of bark stripping. The higher degree of decay significantly lowered the index value of the growth predisposition and vitality of damaged young firs.

Opis:
Managed forests, which account for the vast majority of woodland areas in Poland, play a major role in preserving biodiversity. The objective of this work was to determine the diversity of woody microsites in a managed forest covering 27 ha of land in Polanów Forest District (north−western Poland). The study was conducted in 2014 on 20 sampling plots with an area of 0.04 ha each. An inventory of deadwood was conducted involving standing dead trees, snags, stumps, and lying deadwood with a diameter of at least 7 cm (in the case of standing deadwood, the diameter was measured at breast height). Deadwood was classified according to a five−level decay scale. The studied forest was found to contain an average of 26.9 m³/ha of deadwood from several tree species. Lying deadwood accounted for 17.3 m³/ha, standing dead trees for 0.9 m³/ha, snags for 4.9 m³/ha, and stumps for 3.8 m³/ha. Deadwood in all decay stages was identified. The most abundant category of deadwood was moderately decomposed wood in decay stage III (31.3%), followed by decay stage II (24.4%), and decay stage IV (19.7%). Deadwood (both standing and lying) was also very diverse in terms of piece diameters. The diameter at breast height of standing dead trees was up to 26 cm, and that of snags up to 50 cm. The thickest pieces of lying deadwood were 48 cm in diameter. However, pieces of less than 35 cm in diameter accounted for 96% of the total volume of lying deadwood. The volume of deadwood in the studied forest stand was very large, much higher than the average for Polish forests in general (5.8 m³/ha). Deadwood was highly varied and contributed to a substantial diversity of organisms that depend on it, as shown by previous research. Wapienny Las is an example of a managed forest that plays an important role in preserving woodland biodiversity.

The main aim of study was to present the stock and structure of deadwood in different site conditions. In total. sixteen study plots were established on wet broadleaved forest (Lw) and riparianalder forest (OlJ) sites. The objective was to determine the carbon accumulation in lying dead trees. The investigation was performed in the Czarna Rózga reserve in Central Poland (50°5937N; 20°015E). All live and dead trees were measured on each plot. The species of both live and dead trees were identified as well, and the decay class of the dead trees was assessed. Additionally, samples of different species wood from lying logs in five decay classes were taken for carbon content determination. The study was carried out in the spring of 2017. The average stock of deadwood in the Czarna Rózga reserve on the wet broadleaved forest site amounted to 47 m3/ha, while on the riparian alder forest site it equaled 52 m3/ha. The high stock of deadwood can be explained by the slowdown of decay processes by humidity and anaerobic conditions. Ash was the dominant species in the deadwood pool. Regardless of the site conditions (Lw or OlJ), the stock of ash deadwood was several times higher than the stock of live trees this species. The greater carbon stock in lying dead trees was recorded in riparian alder forest.

The paper describes the results of investigation on the range of trophic abilities and preferences of fungi causing the wood decay of the brown rot pattern. Fomitopsis pinicola, Laetiporus sulphureus, Piptoporus betulinus and Serpula lacrymans fungi were tested. Wooden samples made from wood of 25 different, both European and exotic, tree species were used. They were put on mycelium of every tested fungus. After 30, 60 and 90 days of exposition samples were weighted and the loss of their mass was calculated to compare the differences of wood destroying abilities between examined tree species. The results indicated that the range of trophic abilities in ex situ conditions of tested fungi species was much wider than in nature. All examined fungi were able to decay the wood of more tree species and their trophic preferences occurred to be different as well.

The objective of the research was to analyse the level of fungal infection of spruce wood in the mature and overmature stands and determine the age of their technical maturity. Trees from seven stands aged 49−137 were examined. Age was found to have a statistically significant effect on the level of infection of trees caused by wood−rotting fungi. A high infection level was also detected in the bark−stripped spruces of the lower storeys of multi−storeyed stands. The obtained results enabled determination of the age at which spruces are considered mature (technical maturity) for felling at 80−90 years.

On the basis of literature data and own research, algorithms for the calculation of the amount of released CO2 and C per hectare per year were developed taking into consideration 1) the share of trees infected by root pathogens in 80−year−old pine stands, 2) the weight of tree roots, 3) the share of cellulose in the wood of roots and 4) the loss of cellulose degraded by fungi. The developed model after transformations contains only a) the merchantable timber volume of trees per hectare to be harvested based on measurements or SILP database and b) the area of occurrence of fungi causing wood decay in roots and stumps (here: Heterobasidion spp., Armillaria spp. and Phlebiopsis gigantea). These data can also provide estimates of the level of carbon sequestration in the non−infested forest stands.

Opis:
Black cherry is an important invasive species in forest ecosystems in Poland. It developed mainly in Scots pine stands. The aim of the study was to identify microscopic fungi colonies inhabiting black cherry stumps. In the spring of 2017, wood samples were collected from stumps created after cutting in each subsequent month of 2016 in the Podanin Forest District (19°28'00'E, 52°04'00'N). Stumps up to 5 cm and more than 5 cm in diameter were selected for the study. In total, 72 discs from the first stage of the decomposition of wood were collected. The discs were drilled to obtain fine sawdust for further analysis. The trials were divided into four periods. DNA isolation was performed using the Plant Genomic DNA purification kit (ThermoScientific). The ITS1/2 rDNA region was used for species identification. The analysis was carried out using specific primers. The obtained product was purified and sequenced using the Illumina SBS technology. The resulting sequence was compared using the BLAST algorithm with reference sequences from the NCBI database. The communities of fungi inhabiting the black cherry stumps differed from each other. The highest number of taxa was identified in samples from stumps over 5 cm sheared in autumn and winter, while the lowest in stumps up to 5 cm sheared in spring and winter. Fungi belonging to the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Glomeromycota, Zygomycota and non−cultivable fungi and organisms belonging to other kingdoms were identified. Saprophytes from Menispora sp. dominated on the analysed stumps. The collection of fungi of larger stumps was more diverse and more numerous than on stumps with a smaller diameter. A greater diversity of taxa was distinguished by the stumps of tree fallen in the growing season. The majority of the analyzed samples were dominated by Ascomycota. Basidiomycota clusters dominated in the winter. The predominant share of saprotrophs shows the distribution of stumps. The most desirable effect of the research would be the indication of naturally occurring saprotroph, whose operation would reduce the black cherry’s yield strength. The applied method of sequencing based on the Illumina System was effective to determine the composition of the fungal population.

There are over 100 thousand old trees protected as nature monuments in Poland. Their health condition in many cases is not satisfying and the new methods of their conservancy against pathogenic, wood decaying fungi are necessary to be prepared. In this paper the evaluation of practical usability of some phenolic compounds naturally existing in wood is described. Natural chemical substances as eugenol, isoeugenol, resorcinol, pyrogallol and 2−furaldehyde (furanone) seem to be very useful in this matter. Artificially applied directly into the stem of living tree by hydrostatic injection, they are able to protect it from the inside as well as commonly used synthetic fungicides, being also less dangerous for the natural environment.

The aim of the study was to characterize the state and dynamics of dead wood resources in the stands of the Świnia Góra strict forest reserve, which was excluded from use for a longer period of time (from 1938/1953), and to compare the results with the state and dynamics of living trees resources. The reserve covers 51 hectares of an upland forest in the Świętokrzyska Forest (central Poland). Data was collected in 2000, 2007 and 2014 on 95 systematically distributed 500 m2 sample plots. The location and dimensions of living trees, standing dead trees (snags, including stumps) and downed trees (logs) on each sample plot were determined and measured. The decay stages of dead wood were estimated using a four−point scale classification. The average volume of dead wood was 198 ±32 m3/ha (43 ±8% of living trees) in 2000 and 138 ±17 m3/ha (24 ±3%) in 2014 (fig. 1). The ratio of the volume of snags to logs decreased from 30 ±5% in 2000 to 24 ±6% in 2014. Silver fir was the dominant species among both living and dead trees (fig. 2). The share of dead wood volume in decay stages 1 and 2 was the highest among snags, while in stages 2 and 3 – among logs. The number of highly decomposed wood increased in the period 2000−2014 (fig. 3). The decay rate of wood calculated over a 7−year period was more rapid for logs (fig. 4). In the period of 14 years, 119 ±23 m3/ha of dead wood underwent a complete decomposition. Volume of trees that died within that period was 59 ±10 m3/ha (fig. 5). The complete decomposition of snags amounted to 64 ±10% and logs to 58 ±5% of the initial dead wood volume. The dead wood resources in the investigated period were not balanced: the amount of decayed wood was larger than the amount of wood replenishing the resources. The lack of this balance was due to the lack of the balance of living trees – dead wood resources were insufficiently replenished by trees that had died during analysed 14 years. The dead wood resources at a level of approximately 200−230 m3/ha might be balanced via their continuous replenishment by newly died trees in the amount close to the current volume increment.

Dead wood in the city parks is removed for safety and aesthetic reasons. ‘Polesie Konstantynowskie’ nature reserve (9.8 ha) located in the western part of Łódź is an exception. In this reserve dead wood is left for natural decomposition. So far in this reserve research was conducted on the vascular flora and stand structure only, but the amount of wood was not measured. The aim of this study was to assess the volume of coarse woody material of various types (coarse woody debris, snags), species, size, (dbh and height) and decay classes. The study was carried out in 2010. The volume of coarse woody debris was estimated with a method proposed by Van Wagner [1968]. The criterion of division into five decomposition classes follows Maser et al. [1979].

Opis:
Paper presents results of laboratory experiments on the usability of selected phenolic compounds naturally existing in wood for artificial wood protection against wood decay caused by fungi. Some of these substances are believed to work as inhibitors of mycelium’s growths and prevent wood against biological destruction. Six different phenolic compounds were tested individually or mixed together. Lime wood samples were artificially saturated by their water solutions using vacuum methods. Then they were put on the mycelium of Laetiporus sulphureus and Trametes versicolor. The samples were taken out after 30, 60 and 90 days. The loss of their weight was compared with control samples saturated only by water. The differences between these results allowed to improve the potential ability of particular natural compounds for artificial wood protection against biological decay.
