Opis:
A question of Warner and Whitley concerning a nonunital version of the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem is considered in the context of nonnormed topological algebras. Among other things it is shown that a closed hyperplane M of a commutative symmetric F*-algebra E with Lindelöf Gel'fand space is a maximal regular ideal iff each element of M belongs to some closed maximal regular ideal of E.

The aim of this paper is to prove that derivations of a C*-algebra A can be characterized in the space of all linear continuous operators T : A → A by the conditions T(1) = 0, T(L∩R) ⊂ L + R for any closed left ideal L and right ideal R. As a corollary we get an extension of the result of Kadison [5] on local derivations in W*-algebras. Stronger results of this kind are proved under some additional conditions on the cohomologies of A.

We show that for every ergodic flow, given any factor σ-algebra ℱ, there exists a σ-algebra which is relatively perfect with respect to ℱ. Using this result and Ornstein's isomorphism theorem for flows, we give a functorial definition of the entropy of flows.

There has been a considerable search for radical, amenable Banach algebras. Noncommutative examples were finally found by Volker Runde [R]; here we present the first commutative examples. Centrally placed within the construction, the reader may be pleased to notice a reprise of the undergraduate argument that shows that a normed space with totally bounded unit ball is finite-dimensional; we use the same idea (approximate the norm 1 vector x within distance η by a "good" vector $y_1$; then approximate $(x-y_1)/η$ within distance η by a "good" vector $y_2$, thus approximating x within distance $η^2$ by $y_1+η y_2$, and so on) to go from η=9/10 in Lemma 1.5 to arbitrarily small η in Lemma 2.1. This is not an arbitrary decision on the part of the author; it really is forced on him by the nature of the construction, see e.g. (6.1) for a place where η small at the start will not do.

Let A be a semisimple commutative regular tauberian Banach algebra with spectrum $Σ_A$. In this paper, we study the norm spectra of elements of $\overline{span} Σ_A$ and present some applications. In particular, we characterize the discreteness of $Σ_A$ in terms of norm spectra. The algebra A is said to have property (S) if, for all $φ ∈ \overline{\span} Σ_A \ {0}$, φ has a nonempty norm spectrum. For a locally compact group G, let $ℳ_2^{d}(Ĝ)$ denote the C*-algebra generated by left translation operators on $L^2(G)$ and $G_{d}$ denote the discrete group G. We prove that the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ has property (S) iff the canonical trace on $ℳ_2^{d}(Ĝ)$ is faithful iff $ℳ_2^{d} (Ĝ)≅ ℳ_2^{d} (Ĝ_{d})$. This provides an answer to the isomorphism problem of the two C*-algebras and generalizes the so-called "uniqueness theorem" on the group algebra $L^1(G)$ of a locally compact abelian group G. We also prove that $G_{d}$ is amenable iff G is amenable and the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebra $A_p(G)$ has property (S) for all p.

For any pair E,F of pseudotopological vector spaces, we endow the space L(E,F) of all continuous linear operators from E into F with a pseudotopology such that, if G is a pseudotopological space, then the mapping L(E,F) × L(F,G) ∋ (f,g) → gf ∈ L(E,G) is continuous. We use this pseudotopology to establish a result about differentiability of certain operator-valued functions related with strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups in Banach spaces, to characterize von Neumann algebras, and to establish a result about integration of Lie algebra representations.

A study is made of a symmetric functional calculus for a system of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space. Finite real linear combinations of the operators have real spectra, but the operators do not necessarily commute with each other. Pour un opérateur T borné sur un espace de Hilbert dans lui-même, nous montrons que $γ(π(T)) = sup{γ(T+K): Kopérateur compact}$, où γ est la conorme (the reduced minimum modulus) et π(T) est la classe de T dans l'algèbre de Calkin. Nous montrons aussi que ce supremum est atteint. D'autre part, nous montrons que les opérateurs semi-Fredholm caractérisent les points de continuité de l'application T → γ (π(T)).
