Opis:
Stanisław Przybyszewski’s Vigils is a prose poem written originally in German; its publication in 1895 was followed by a revised edition in 1901. A Polish translation, by Przybyszewski himself, entitled Z cyklu Wigilii was published in 1899. This interpretation of the Vigils not only takes a closer look at its origins and history, but also analyzes the differences between the two German versions and makes a comparison of the German and Polish texts. The comparison reveals that the most flagrant and blasphemous passages have been left out of the Polish version. Moreover, the omission of the original conclusion changes the meaning of the story. The article quotes the opinions of the first readers of the Vigils, the German and Polish reviewers, and goes on to present its own interpretation of the poem. What it actually dramatizes is the failure to find a formula that would integrate the protean, irrational and entropic reality the story. In effect, the project of establishing a connection between the act of creation and transcendental knowledge through a total, mystical union of male and female, soul and soma, turns out to be an illusion.

Opis:
This article looks at Professor Stanisław Jaworski’s contribution to the development of textual criticism in Poland. It was his book I write, therefore I am that offered Polish readers a comprehensive and erudite introduction to French genetic and textual criticism. Published in 1993, it set this enormously important critical movement in the broader perspective of cultural and literary anthropology. The second part of the article examines the impact of this book on Polish studies into the processes of text creation and the ‘avant-textes’. The third, fi nal part surveys the late Professor Jaworski’s role in organizing conferences and stimulating debate on all aspects of genetic criticism.

He defi nes the avant-garde as a mosaic of diverse trends with no common aesthetic or ideological denominator and, at the same time, as a transcultural network of artists apparently unrelated artists. Focusing on his major studies (Foundations of the Avant-garde, Tadeusz Peiper: Writer and Theoretician, Between the Avant-garde and Surrealism, and The Avant-garde) the article reconstructs Jaworski’s insights and theoretical constructs in the context of contemporary network studies and reassesses his commitment to both history and theory of literature.

Opis:
In his introduction to the German translation of Norwid's Vade-mecum Hans Robert Jauss calls the work of the Polish poet a lasting challenge to German poetry. This essay attempts to show the ways in which Norwid’s further reception could help re-evaluate German assessments of their own Romantic tradition. For instance, the ironic undermining of the value of work, both creative and physical, in Norwid’s ‘Irony’ can be used as a tell-tale clue for the pursuit of similar intima-tions in the writings of early German Romantics, especially the barely noticed ironic undertones of their representations of labour economics. Furthermore, the adoption of the newly-developed concept of a political and economic Romanticism for the critical study of Norwid leads to the discovery of an unexpected theoretical coherence of his oeuvre, which in effect (let it be made absolutely clear) loses nothing of its heterogeneity and dialogic nature. The irony generated by the habitus of Norwid’s crypto-parabases (a technique which is a distinctive feature of his dramas) reveals the productive role of time in this mode of poetic representation, the time of work and the time of great projects, and conjure up the jeering specter of eternity.

Opis:
This article presents a comparative analysis of two poems, Stéphane Mallarmé’s ‘Soupir’ (1866) and Wacław Rolicz-Lieder’s ‘To My Sister’s Smile’, published in 1891. ‘Soupir’ is one of Mallarmé’s early poems, yet in many respects, as this analysis demonstrates, looks forward to the French poet’s mature phase and foreshadows the poetics of Wacław Rolicz-Lieder. Chief among the similarities are the autothematic focus and the intent to convey feelings of emptiness and longing for an ideal in poems refi ned to the point of préciosité. However, for all their preoccupation with the craft of poetry, either poet believed that inspiration was absolutely vital for creativity. This article argues that Mallarmé’s poetics, especially his ideas of inspiration and originality, was taken over by Wacław Rolicz-Lieder, who adapted it to suit his own poetic project.

After 1918 it was by no means uncommon for literary critics of renown to give up their familiar pursuits and move on to new fields. This article traces and brings to light the largely forgotten literary criticism of Władysław Jabłonowski, better known as an influential politician and journalist. He had made his name as a prolific literary critic with the rising tide of the Young Poland movement, but, as life resumed in an independent Poland, he scaled down his activity in that field quite considerably. Moreover, he abandoned the ‘empathic’ model of Modernist criticism for a steady commitment to classical aesthetics, especially as it manifested itself in French literature, of which he was always a great admirer. In this new phase he remained invariably loyal to nationalist ideology and a mythologized idea of ‘the West’.

Opis:
The last decades have seen a growing interest in food and cooking and along with it a rise of the a new journalistic genre, the food column. This article focuses on two collections of Polish food columns, or, to be more precise culinary feuilletons, now also available in book form, Literatura od kuchni [Literature from Behind the Scenes] by Bogusław Deptuła and Więcej niż możesz zjeść [More Than You Can Tuck Away] by Dorota Masłowska. They provide the material for a study of two interrelated phenomena, the sensory processing which takes place in the course of the culinary experience, and the retrieval of those experiences from memory, triggered by exposure to certain events or artefacts. Viewed from that perspective, the culinary columns of either writer represent a record of his or her gustatory sensations, which constitute their (auto)biographical pasts. Each of them is made up of two blocks of memories, representing the remote past (childhood) and the past that is still fresh (recent travel experiences). The approach adopted in this study ties in with the methodology of sensory anthropology, especially its taste- and smell-specific subfields, and sensuous geography (most of the sensory reminiscences in Bogusław Deptuła’s and Dorota Masłowska’s culinary feuilletons are rooted in their experience of a particular geographical place).

Opis:
Jacek Podsiadło, an acclaimed poet and essayist, is the author of a series of weekly columns published in Tygodnik Powszechny between 2000 and 2007, and later reprinted in two books, A mój syn [And My Son] and Pippi, dziwne dziecko [Pippi, A Strange Child] (both published in 2006). This article attempts to define the genre of these texts, which, in Polish, are classified as feuilletons, i.e. short essays in which a topical event is used as trigger to present the author's personal reflections, usually written in a light, ironic tone. As it hovers between journalism and art, or fact and literary fiction, the feuilleton is notoriously difficult to define. So are Podsiadło's feuilletons, which are distinguished by their poetic quality an original style and their themes, especially when they are presented from the point of view of 'a strange child'. That child, a quixotic character in its own rights, becomes the true focus of attention in the second series of his feuilletons.

This essay is a new reading of Jan Barszczewski's collection of stories Szlachcic Zawalnia czyli Białoruś w fantastycznych opowiadaniach [Nobleman Zawalnia, or Belarus in Fantastic Stories of the Imagination] in the context of the 19th-century reception of the Arabian Nights and, more importantly, as an example of a genre which combines the oral and the literary traditions to express the identity-fostering experience of living at a time of upheaval and epochal change. This approach has little interest in revisiting the connections between Barszczewski's tales and Belorussian folklore. Instead, it places his stories in their direct historical context, i.e. a series of famines in Belarus the first decades of the 19th century, and the significance of 1816, the year in which the action of the stories is set. It is no coincidence that it was also the Year without a Summer, a catastrophic global climate anomaly, which made a great impact on the Romantic imagination.

Wawrzyniec Engeström (altern. The rapprochement he sought was based on anti-German and anti-Russian sentiments. In his poems A Song about Our Stars (Pieśń o gwiazdach naszych, 1874, 1883) and The Vistula: A National Fantasy (Wisła – Fantazja narodowa, 1883) he drew on Wincenty Pol's Songs of Our Land (Pieśni o ziemi naszej). They all celebrated the idea of national unity based on historical memory, religion and custom. His inspiration came from Swedish Romantic literature, whose main works he translated into Polish.

After moving to Italy in 1856, Teofi l Lenartowicz, inspired by the great Italian art and supported by the best Florentine artists of the time Giovanni Dupré and Enrico Pazzi, began studying sculpture. Lenartowicz’s sculptures were always connected with literature: his work shows how one infl uenced the other. It is no accident that his style as a sculptor has been called ‘poetic’ by the critics. The Polish immigrant was fascinated by the Italian Renaissance, and especially by the art of Lorenzo Ghiberti. At the same time, he never forgot about Polish folklore, which played a signifi cant role in his artistic vision. One of the most impressive examples of this intersection of infl uences is the bas-relief The Holy Workers, complemented by a poem bearing the same name.

This article analyses the transformative infl uence of Marcel Proust’s fi ction on early works of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1925–1927) in the light of the short story Nowa miłość [A New Love]. The article argues – on the basis of a reconstruction of the order in which Iwaszkiewicz read the volumes of In Search of Lost Time – that the date of its composition has be to revised and proceeds to explore the affi nity between the two writers. The analyses, which draw on Harold Bloom’s infl uence theory, compare and contrast their handling of scenes and narratives, relations of analogy and visions of love. The article claims that Iwaszkiewicz was keen to enter into dialogue with the French author and adopted some of Proust’s techniques, yet without compromising his own creative autonomy. In the course of that dialogue he developed a notion of Proust’s literary art which, it is argued, provides the key to the interpretation of homoeroticism and narcissism in Nowa miłość.

This article is a critical reappraisal of Juliusz Słowacki’s translation of Calderón’s El príncipe constant (1843), which acquired a place of its own in Słowacki’s oeuvre and continued to attract a lot of interest throughout the 20th century. Its lasting appeal is due to its extraordinary unity of tone, dramatic construction and stylized language, which in effect, as some critics have said, out-Baroques Calderón’s Baroque original. This article analyzes this contention in detail and tries to answer the question what were the sources and reasons of Słowacki’s fascination with the 17-th century Spanish poet and playwright. The second part of the article deals with two of the 20th-century stage productions of the drama and the adapters’ handling of Słowacki’s text. The summary includes a brief survey of the treatment Calderón’s heirs accorded to his key trope perigrinatio vitae (‘life is pilgrimage’).

This article deals with the reception of Arthur Rimbaud’s poetry and his biographic legend by the poets of the last decades of 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, though, in fact, its earliest phase belongs to the literary period of pre-Modernist, anti-Romantic reaction (which described itself by the name Positivism, epitomized by the novels of Bolesław Prus). The process of Rimbaud’s reception proceeded in two dimensions, on the intergenerational level and in dialogue between poets and translators. Interestingly, it acted as a veritable catalyst of changes in the poetics of writers across the spectrum, from the old school (Józef Weyssenhof and Eliza Orzeszkowa) to the modernist avant-garde. The influence of Rimbaud was by no means uniform and went beyond the usual names like Zenon Przesmycki (Miriam), Julian Tuwim or Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. This article casts its net widely to include representatives of three generations, among them some of the less acclaimed authors.
