Opis:
Cross-border geological mapping is essential for proper understanding of the Poland’s border areas geological setting and their mineral potential. Close co-operation with geological institutions of the neighbouring countries is, therefore, necessary. The joint detailed geological mapping of the cross-border areas was difficult until 1990 because of security reasons. The whole Polish Geological Institute’s mapping activity concentrated, until that time, on very general cartographic presentations of the regional, European or world-wide geology, tectonics, palaeogeography, mineral perspectives, and so on, in the adequately small scales. Since the early 1990s the Institute started to develop more systematic, geophysical, geological and geo-environmental mapping of the common cross-border areas with the national geological surveys and other geological institutions of the neighbouring countries. The most systematic and most detailed cartographic surveys have been carried out so far with the German geological surveys. The Czech, Slovak, and Lithuanian surveys cooperated also very actively. A great cartographic effort has been made on the Baltic Sea geology, as well. Geological mapping co-operation with the Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Russian institution is eventually slowly building up, too. This paper presents the up-to-date results of the joint Polish Geological Institute and the neighbouring geological surveys activities in the geological mapping of the cross-border areas, as well as some current, mapping related activities.

Opis:
Aerial photographs are a source of geological information that may be unobtainable elsewhere. If the fullest use is to be made of this information for the purpose of geological mapping, there must be a planned integration of the photogeological work with the field and laboratory investigations. The appearance of the first satellites for civil purposes on the beginning of the 1970s (such as ERTS – Landsat series), of most land areas of the Earth has provided new opportunity for photogeologists. Many areas can now be studied and mapped geologically for which neither adequate maps nor vertical aerial photograps were available. The advantages of the present satellite systems and examples of their application by specialists of the Polish Geological Institute are presented in this paper. Nowadays, it is practically impossible to imagine performing geological mapping without application of remote sensing data and analysis. Development of new technologies is very fast and new borne techniques are coming like permanent scatter interferometry, laser scanning etc. However, we should always remember, that they are only very useful tools to help geologists in their field mapping art and practise.

Opis:
The present age of digital subsurface mapping is represented above all by quantitative maps based on regular grids. They are created on the basis of various input data: digitized contours, widely comprehended well data, 2D and 3D seismic, and qualitative geological maps. Scope and the data utilization and the applied methodology of processing are strictly dependent on the scale and purpose of a given map; for regional and detailed maps they are significantly different. However, irrespective of the map scale, correct models, reflecting probable subsurface variability, instead of the input data spatial distribution and applied estimation algorithm themselves, are conditioned by chances of integrating of all the mentioned types of data. These purposes can be achieved only through the application of the most flexible interpretive programs such as ZMAP–Plus or mapping modules of the Geographix system. High quality quantitative subsurface maps based on regular grids are nowadays used first of all in petroleum exploration and geothermal research. But development of such studies may contribute to creation of high-quality, interactive, subsurface models, available not only for owners of expensive professional software but also for all geoscientists interested in these topics.

The Detailed Geological Map of Poland in scale 1:50,000 (DGMP 1:50,000) is elaborated in Polish on the base of geological mapping, especially drilled boreholes to subQuaternary basement as well as geological and geophysical surveys and laboratory studies. The whole edition comprises 1069 sheets. The Detailed Geological Map of Poland in the scale 1:50,000 published from 1954 together with explanations, forms a compendium of geological knowledge of the area. It is a basic map which is being used for construction of all the other consecutive thematic maps of the country, either in detailed or in regional scales. The Map is supplemented with one or two geological sections, typical for the area: one of them (Quaternary deposits) is prepared in highly exaggerated vertical scale. Each sheet is provided with brochure text explanations, containing description of the geological structure of the area, logs of the more significant boreholes, geomorphological and subQuaternary basement sketches and the results of field and laboratory analyses.

Applications of geophysical mapping to structural geology, prospecting and environment protection purposes are presented. Both classic and more advanced geophysical methods can be employed to enhance either regional, semi-detailed or detailed mapping of geological structures. In the case of regional and semi-detailed studies, gravity and magnetotelluric methods are supplementary to seismic, especially where significant screening and attenuating of seismic waves occur. Detailed investigations of environmental protection issues might include a wide range of geophysical methods, but in the case of investigation of groundwater pollution usually resistivity methods are applied. Examples of geophysical works performed by the PBG Geophysical Exploration Company illustrate these applications.

Opis:
The Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute (PGI-NRI) acts as the Polish Geological Survey (PGS) and is the main provider of geological maps in Poland. Since 1953 the Polish Geological Institute ’s activities have been focused on the construction of multi-sheet map editions covering the whole territory of the country. The most important map - first edition of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland in scale of1 : 50,000 (DGMP 1 : 50,000) - will be fully compiled in GIS technology in 2020. It is a basic map used for preparation of all other thematic maps and databases in the country, both in detailed and regional scale. Due to increased interest in geoturism in Poland, the PGS has started to elaborate geological-tourist maps, what is one of the basic forms of geoturism popularization.

Opis:
Recognition and precise delimitation of landslide-affected areas, especially in the mountains, have been a challenge so far. New opportunities emerged after dissemination of high- resolution Digital Elevation Models generated by Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS), which are also used to processing and visualization of geological data. This paper touches the issue in both aspects mentioned above, and presents results of morphometric analysis of a landslide on the northern slope of the Drogosz hill within the Zawory Range, in the southern part of the Krzeszów Basin (Central Sudetes). Attempts ofreconstruction ofthe slip surface and estimation oftotal volume of the landslide colluvialfill were undertaken. Furthermore, differential maps were compiled. They were a basis for the spatial distribution of thickness evaluation. The Drogosz hill landslide seems to be strictly related to the geological structure of the research area. The Zawory Range is composed of Upper Cretaceous, Lower Triassic (Buntsandstein) and Permian (Rotliegendes) rocks. Lack of recognition of landslide phenomena was probably the main reason of misleading interpretations of the Krzeszów area geology. The paper also provides comments on the existing concepts of the geological structure of the Krzeszów Basin, especially of the Łączna Anticline.

Samples were leached with HCl (1:4); than AAS and ICP–AES) determinations of Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were made. The geochemical survey reveals that occurerence of heavy metals in forest and agricultural soils is similar to the regional geochemical background. Small towns (Błonie and Leszno) with associated transport system and emissions of dust and gases from coal burning households are local sources of soil pollution with copper, lead and zinc. Geochemical anomalies related to industry have been dicovered in towns Łomianki and Ożarów Mazowiecki. Areas with high arsenic and chromium as well as zinc, lead and copper concentration were found in the environs of former tannery at Łomianki. Former Cable Work in Ożarów Mazowiecki is the main source of anthropogenic pollution of soils by copper and lead while the the soils around the glass smelter are significantly polluted by lead.

The Sub-Tatric units was newly mapped for the implementation of the Detailed Geological Map of the Tatra Mountains at the scale of 1 : 10 000 (SmgT). Lithostratigraphic andtectonic field observations between the Bystra Valley and the Strążyska Valley allowed a newinterpretation of the geological structure of the area. The system of sheets has appeared to beeven more complicated than that advocated by Guzik and Kotański (1963). New sheets have been recognized: Grześkówki sheets (Lower and Upper sheets), which were distinguished from the former Grześkówki sheet (sensu Guzik & Kotański, 1963), and the Kazalnica sheet and Żywczańskie sheet, which were distinguished from the Samkowa Czuba sheet. Both Grześkówki sheets and Kazalnica sheet are composed of Carnian and Norian clastics or marly dolomites, Rhaetian limestones and Hettangian clayey-silty shales. The Lower Grzeoekówki and Kazalnica sheets lie in the inverted position and Żywczańskie sheet is composed of an isolated package of Lower Jurassic spotted marls and limestones lying in the normal position contrary to the inverted beds of the Samkowa Czuba sheet. The Spadowiec sheet has a wider spatial extent than it was postulated earlier. The Jastrzębia Turnia sheet probably does not exist in area between the valleys of Białego and Bystra.

Basic statutory task of the Polish Geological Institute-National Research Institute within the framework of the State Geological Survey is conducting detailed geological mapping ofPoland. One of the leading themes of the III Polish Geological Congress is the "Geological mapping - history and contemporary challenges”. The article presents an analysis of the current state ofdetailed geological mapping in the Sudetes and adjacent areas, as well as the reasons for the need to start a new, second edition of the Detailed Geological Map of the Sudetes (SMGS) at the scale of 1 : 25,000. These reasons can be briefly defined as follows: long-lasting duration of the SMGS development (nearly half a century), lack of uniformity, and outdatedness of this edition. The first edition covered 139 map sheets at the scale of1 : 25,000, with a total area over 10,100 km2. The newly presented comprehensive project assumes very fast workflow, just 10 years of work before the implementation of the second edition of the 1 : 25,000 SMGS. The new edition is going to be more modern and based on the new classification of rocks, providing more information about their origins, geotectonic settings, as well as the processes and geological phenomena, which are not included in the first edition of the 1 : 25,000 SMGS.

The article presents results of two-year study that included mapping of Czarna Góra (Podhale region, Carpathians), especially in local watercourses and dirt roads after the downpour of July 31, 2010. The field research shows that sudden morphological processes were induced as a result of intense rain (debris flow, which was triggered in a road cut and many shallow and small landslides in local stream valleys). The study presents results of mapping new landforms after the downpour. Because no earlier landforms of similar origin have been found in this area, it can be concluded that the event had a unique character.

The international initiative of Geological Surveys OneGeology is 5 years old this year. Currently, 117 countries participate in OneGeology. Thanks to international cooperation, a geological map of the world is being created. This is the first one constructed as a distributed data system, where the owners and distributors are individual countries. According to the assumptions presented in OneGeology a superficial and bedrock geology maps are produced in a digital format. The process of implementation and testing of the GeoSciML geological data exchange language has already begun and it ensures the geological data interoperability. This is the first step in the efforts to harmonize data. The result will be a consistent map, where the geological units will be defined clearly and artificialfaults along the administrative borders, being a result of differences in geological interpretation of the same rocks, will disappear. The Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute provides a geological map of Poland at a scale of1 :1 000 000 as WMS and WFS web services. Currently, other maps are in preparation, which allow knowing the general surface and subsurface geological structure ofPoland. The PGI-NRI, as a participant of OneGeology initiative, conducts also numerous presentations to popularize the project among representatives of the geological surveys including Angola, Ukraine and Albania. The result ofPolish-Ukrainian cooperation is Geological Map of Ukraine published as WMS.

The east-central part of the Kamienne Mountains in the Sudetes has long been known as an area where landslides occur in abundance. Their extent was shown on first detailed geological maps from the early 20th century and later on Polish geological maps published in the 1970 and 1990. The total landslide area mapped was about 100 ha. The availability of LiDAR data allowed to build digital elevation models of very high resolution and to attempt landslide mapping using diagnostic landform assemblages as guidelines. 30 separate landslides have been mapped, including complex landslide areas involving overlapping landslide bodies oflikely different origin. The total landslide area is at least300 ha, while the largest complexes cover 40-50 ha. LiDAR-based models proved extremely useful in landslide mapping, espe- cially in forested areas.
