Opis:
The Lower Carboniferous sediments of the Bardo Mts. is mainly composed of biostratigraphically undocumented flysch sequences. A cone impression was found in clayey-mudstone bed of the Srebrna Góra formation that represents one of these flysch sequences. The estimated Middle or even Upper Viséan relative age of this formation was determined based on the underlying paleontologically documented Nowa Wieś formation. The strobilus specimen is morphologically similar to cones assigned to genera Flemingites and Lepidostrobus, that were produced by arborescent lycopsids. The absence of in situ spores makes a precicse taxonomical determination of the cone impossible. The currently known stratigraphical ranges of the two genera are consistent with the previous opinions on the age of Srebrna Góra formation.

Thenetwork of joints cutting the flysch deposits in the western Podhale is reasonably regular both in map scale and in individual outcrops. It is formed by five sets having a different orientation with respect to the range of the Podhale Synclinorium, as well as a different age and origin. The oldest diagonal sets (DR, DL) are conjugate and roughly coeval and were formed as "potential shear surfaces" in horizontal beds, whereas their further opening proceeded in an extensional mode. The younger sublongitudinal set (L') comprises extensional joints originated during the early buckling of beds. The transverse set (T), younger than the L'-set, comprises extensional joints formed in relation to the WNW-ESE extension of the Podhale Synclinorium. The youngest longitudinal set (L) originated in an extensional mode in consequence of stress relaxation in the rock massif during postorogenic uplift. Joint density increases in areas involved in relatively strong tectonic disturbances: the zone of tectonic contact between the flysch and the Pieniny Klippen Belt, the zone of contact between the Paleogene deposits, the Tatra Massif and the Biały Dunajec fault zone.

The occurrence of mineral waters and related spas constitutes the leading theme of the projected geopark: Flysch Carpathians and their mineral waters. The geopark is located on the Beskid Sądecki and Beskid Niski area on the Polish side. It is situate in the area of the occurrence of three Carpathian units: Magura Nappe (the major part of the area), which includes Krynica, Bystrica, Racza and Siary tectonic-facies zones; Silesian Nappe and Grybów Unit. Besides mineral waters, the geodiversity of the area is defined by well exposed flysch rocks profiles including clastic type localities of the Magura Nappe described in the XIX century pioneers of geological investigations. The landslide morphology, attractive geomorphological forms like waterfalls, diversified river valleys, tors as well as places connected with history and tradition of exploration and exploitation of Carpathian hydrocarbons fields. The type localities of profiles of Grybów, Siary and Krynica Units as well as Łabowa Variegated Shales, Beloveza and Malcov formations. All these elements represent geotouristical attractions with high potential. They will be included in the network of preserved geosites within the projected geopark. The analysis of proposed geopark Flysch Carpathians and their mineral waters indicates high degree of diversification of natural values, especially geodiversity as well as richness of historical-cultural heritage. The preservation and protection methods are also diversified. This region represents unique geoenvironmental and historical values on the European scale, therefore providing good chances for establishment of geopark. The proposition of geopark with mineral waters and related spas in the Flysch Carpathians is first such project in the world. The documentation of geosites was already gathered during this stage of work, it requires only actualization, minor additions and construction of unified database. The evaluation of the actual touristic infrastructure provided also generally positive results, only the eastern part of geopark requires additional investments and promotion.

The chemistry of precipitation significantly alters while infiltrating through a layer of weathered rocks. The paper deals with the role of weathering mantle in shaping the chemistry of shallow groundwater in a flysch catchment basin. The analytical and modelling research show that weathering mantles also affect the formation of calcareous sinter. Based on the results of field studies, a hydrochemical model has been developed, which documents the transformation of chemical composition of groundwater. The rate of precipitating calcium carbonate is also determined. The test area covered the Suchy Stream catchment basin located within the southern flank of the Podhale basin.

Opis:
When conducting geological surveys in landslide areas, it is important to define the scope of the planned geological works. The most important issue in the study of landslides is the recognition of the depth and shape of the slip surface. This requires the correct type of drilling and a good core quality. Most often, within a single landslide, several slip surfaces are documented, which occur at different depths, which is associated with a complex manner of motion and shear. Proper determination of the deepest sliding surfaces allows for the construction of a calculation model and selection of the optimal method of securing the landslide area. The course of the slip surface is often not determined by the depth of the bedrock under the cover formations. Geological diagnosis should depend on the size of the examined landslide and the impact of its activation on potential damage / destruction of existing buildings and technical infrastructure. The method of documenting and carrying out calculations is presented as recommended in landslide areas. In the first step, calculations should be made on the basis of data obtained from field work and parameters obtained from laboratory tests. Monitoring should complement field research and assess the scale of displacements. Conducting stability calculations should be a standard for the preparation of geological and engineering documentation of landslides and areas at risk of mass movements. It allows you to assess the risk and threats to the planned investment or protective structure. This is to provide permanent safeguards to prevent damage to buildings that have been designed on the basis of uncertain geological data. It is postulated to modify the ordinance on the implementation of geological and engineering documentation by adding a point concerning the documentation of landslides. If there is such an area, special requirements must be met when conducting geological surveys.

Thirty rock and mineral samples were collected in the Rabe-Bystre area in the so-called Bystre slice in the Flysch Carpathians. The research concentrated on the mineral occurrence, parageneses and on the relationship to the tectonics. Red mineral realgar displays a pure content of arsenic sulphide. It occurs in veins and aggregates in the most frequent association with quartz. Fluid inclusions in the realgar crystals have been characterized and preliminarily measured, which is a totally new study in the Carpathian area. A new mineral – goyazite SrAl3(PO4)(PO3OH)(OH)6 – has been found as intergrowths in the realgar accumulations, and its characteristics are provided. It seems that the quartz-carbonates-bitumen paragenesis in the study region is related to the distinct tectonic mélange zones, while the ore mineralization should be referred to fault zones and fissures, and/or the mélange zones. It has an epigenetic character, and may be referred to the adjacent potential magmatic body and mineralized waters in the neighbourhood.

The paper presents the possibility of using complex geophysical investigations and geotechnical classification to identify geological structure and assess the stability of Carpathian landslides. The possibility of using seismic surveys to determine the landslide slope geometry necessary to analyze the computational stability has been indicated. In the paper authors present the possibility of geotechnical classification of the flysch KFG basis on the geophysical parameters in connection with the SMR classification proposed by M. Romana, for a rapid quantitative assessment of flysch slope stability. Examples of geophysical investigation of landslides and their stability are described on the basis of the KFG and SMR classification. The proper slope stability assessment has been pointed out as a major factor contributing to safe foundation and operation of engineering structures, especially hydrotechnical structure.

Opis:
Landslide recognition is an important task for designers and contractors during the road construction process. The problems that contractors often face is insufficient recognition of the geological structure (at the design stage), too small area of purchased land under the "ZRiD’'decision, or the inability of fast responding to emerging threats. The studies described in this article shed more light on the complexity of slope deformation as a result of landslide processes. During the constructing of the expressway S-7, the problems related to deep landslide processes occurred, which most probably were associated with poorly recognized old “rocky-weathering material” type of landslide. The geological survey performed during the construction of this road, confirmed the occurrence of deep (>20 m) displacements, recorded by the inclinometer measurements. These deep displacements are linked to a large landslide with a main scarp located in the region of Mt. Cymbalowa Góra.

Opis:
On the SW slopes of the Mt. Kornuty (Magura Wątkowska mountain range in the Beskid Niski Mts.) is located one of the largest landslide areas in the Polish Flysch Carpathians. The morphotectonic analysis performed using contour diagrams and rose directional diagrams, made it possible to determine the direction of gravity mass movement. In total, over than 2500 measurements of the spatial orientation of joint surfaces were made within the landslide zone. Changing the direction of the tectonic anisotropy of the in situ and ex situ forms allowed conducting the morphogenetic analysis, i.e. specifying the types of gravitational movements. Besides the commonly occurring toppling, also rockfalls, rotation around the horizontal or vertical axis, and antithetical displacements (thelistric type) were observed. The combination of several types of gravitational movements of different age allows us to unequivocally say that it is a complex type of landslide.

He specialized in petrographic-sedimentological studies of Cretaceous deposits in Poland, but especially of siliceous rocks. His treatise on diagenesis, published posthumously in 1958, is among the classics of world geological literature. Zbigniew Sujkowski was a Polish patriot. In the period 1914–1920, he participated in the armed struggle for the independence of Poland, and during World War II – in the armed resistance movement against German occupation as the organizer of subversion. At the end of the war, he was in London; his return to Poland was impossible from political reasons. Sujkowski immigrated to Canada and took a job at MacMaster University in Hamilton. He died tragically in an accident.

The Szlachtowa and the Opaleniec formations (Pieniny Klippen Belt, Poland) contain rich dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. The one from the Szlachtowa Formation (previously known as the "black flysch") is dominated by specimens representing the genera Dissiliodinium and Nannoceratopsis. The age of dinoflagellate cysts from this lithostratigraphic unit can be assumed as the Aalenian-Bajocian. Another assemblage occurs in the Opaleniec Formation. Being taxonomically more diverse, it contains several species including Ctenidodinium combazii, C. ornatum, Endoscrinium asymmetricum, Epiplosphaera gochtii, E. reticulata, Atopodinium prostatum, Adnatosphaeridium caulleryi. Age-range of this assemblage can be estimated as the Bajocian-Bathonian. No indications of Jurassic fossil redeposition that could justify suggestions of Cretaceous age of these lithostratigraphic units have been found.

Opis:
The area of Poland, including the Carpathian Mountains, is located in a zone where landslides cause large material damage. This issue can be considered using different time scales. Using various dating methods, it was possible to distinguish periods of increased landslide activity. Among others, the radiometric methods are the most common. Based on the 14C dated landslides in Szczawnica-Biafy Stream, Zapadle near Szymbark, Rychwatd near Żywiec and on data published by Margielewski (2006), it was possible to hypothesize that landslides in the Carpathians have been developing over 13,000 years, i.e. since the Oldest Dryas. This is related to the beginning of degradation of the permafrost, which can be considered as the inception of the development of large rock landslides. On the basis of the presented data, it can also be stated that these landslides have been active up to modern times and their development is very long. An example of this is the landslide in Zapadle. The position of the landslide tongue, which is subjected to erosion, is of great importance, which promotes its further activity. Permanent removing of the colluvial material by a stream and its supplementing by subsequent new displacements from the scarp causes that the landslides can be active for a very long period of time.

Non-destructive ultrasonic tests were used to determine the lithogenetic features responsible for the anisotropy of flysch sandstones. The studied material consisted of the Godula and Zakopane sandstones. These rocks are characterized by significant anisotropy of the geomechanical properties. As a result of ultrasonic testing the characteristic directions ofpropagation of longitudinal waves were determined and subsequently correlated with the microscopic image of thin sections as well as the evident orientation ofjoints observed in situ. The analysis shows that the recorded changes in the propagation of ultrasonic waves indicate the privileged direction resulting from both the orientation of mineral grains and spatial orientation of microcracks. It has a bearing on the direction of turbidity currents in the sedimentary basin and the variable stress field during the formation of the Carpathians.
