Opis:
Most of the craters on the Earth, produced by an impact of meteorite or other space object, have been masked by exogenous processes. The refore, indirect indicators of the impact such as shocked quartz have been recognized. The impact metamorphism is visibly recorded within quartz by distinctive microstructures. However, only the planar deformation features (PDF) are unquestionable evidences of impact. They should be investigated with particular accuracy because of similarity to endogenic planar microdeformations such as: growth features or metamorphic deformation lamellae. The K/Pg boundary interval from the Polish Outer Carpathians (Skole Unit, Husów. Thrust Sheet, Bąkowiec section) have been studied. This note presents difficulties in identifying shock features in quartz grains collected from turbiditic material.

Opis:
The area in question represents northern part of the centralWest Carpathians and the boundary zone of Poland and Slovakia (before 1918 the boundary of Galicia and Upper Hungary). From the end of 18th century the authors of geological maps of this area were mostly Austro-Hungarian geologists, but also specialists from other countries. The first cartographic documents refer to the occurrence of mineral raw materials (Hacquet, 1796). A little later some elements of stratigraphy and tectonics were also considered (Staszic, 1815). Zejszner (1844) was the first to pay attention to biostratigraphy and this problem was continued by his followers. In the "Geological Atlas of Galicia" (1885-1914) the authors took into account tectogenesis, at first following the theory of contraction (Uhlig, 1897, 1899) and, subsequently, the concept of nappes (e.g. Lugeon, 1902, 1903; Uhlig, 1907; Limanowski, 1911; Rabowski & Goetel, 1925; Goetel &. Sokołowski, 1930; Guzik, 1939). Until the beginning of the 21st century, the number of cartographic works (maps and cross-sections) printed separately or as attachments and inserts within texts, reached more than 1000 positions. Particularly the cartography of the 20th century, including the map of the Tatra Mts. 1 : 10 000, represents very valuable basic material for the recently prepared "Detailed Geological Map of the Tatra Mts. 1 : 10 000".

Opis:
The area of Poland, including the Carpathian Mountains, is located in a zone where landslides cause large material damage. This issue can be considered using different time scales. Using various dating methods, it was possible to distinguish periods of increased landslide activity. Among others, the radiometric methods are the most common. Based on the 14C dated landslides in Szczawnica-Biafy Stream, Zapadle near Szymbark, Rychwatd near Żywiec and on data published by Margielewski (2006), it was possible to hypothesize that landslides in the Carpathians have been developing over 13,000 years, i.e. since the Oldest Dryas. This is related to the beginning of degradation of the permafrost, which can be considered as the inception of the development of large rock landslides. On the basis of the presented data, it can also be stated that these landslides have been active up to modern times and their development is very long. An example of this is the landslide in Zapadle. The position of the landslide tongue, which is subjected to erosion, is of great importance, which promotes its further activity. Permanent removing of the colluvial material by a stream and its supplementing by subsequent new displacements from the scarp causes that the landslides can be active for a very long period of time.

Opis:
This paper presents an issue of microstructural changes in clay soils during the water loss due to increase of suction pressure. The change of microstructure affects the geological engineering properties of soils causes problems with the foundation of buildings. The volumetric changes of cohesive soils, containing significant amounts of clay minerals from the smectite group, are caused by a variable water content in soil. The phenomenon of the moisture change significantly alters the geological engineering properties of these soils as a result of shrinking and swelling. This paper aims at presenting the microstructural changes in remoulded specimens of Neogene clays caused by loss of moisture due to suction pressure. The scientific examination involved quantitative analyses of the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study pore space details of remoulded specimens. Tested samples from selected levels of the Neogene clays (Poznan Series) were collected from the Warsaw-Stegny area. Samples were taken from a research polygon for these clay soils. The basic geological engineering properties of clay soils and remoulded specimens have been examined after being prepared according to strictly defined procedures. Through successive stages of the suction pressure (from 50 to 1600 kPa), the samples underwent the process of loss of moisture. Application of a novel method of sample preparation procedure for remoulded specimens allowed examining structurally homogeneous soils and obtaining results without an effect of material anisotropy. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of soil microstructures were performed using SEM and STIMAN software for quantitative images processing. The analysis allowed determination of the number of geometric and morphometric parameters of the microstructure with high accuracy. Based on this study, significant qualitative and quantitative changes in loss of moisture due to suction pressure in the process of remoulded specimens were noted along with changes in the microstructure and pore space of clay soils. The obtained results showed the effect of successive stages of "closing" of the structure of cohesive soils. Microstructural changes have a significant influence on the values of clay soil properties during the shrinkage and swelling process, which are caused by changes in the water content.

The paper presents spatial distribution of base flow in the High Bieszczady Mts. (the Outer Carpathians). Discharges in 30 investigated catchments were measured in October 2009 during low flow period. Differences observed in unit base flow were varying from 0.9 dm>sup>3 s-1 km-2 in the Niedźwiedzi catchment to 6.8 dm3 s-1 km-2 in the Hulski catchment. Occurrence of colluviums is conducive to high values of base flow. On the other hand, low values of base flow are common to catchments drained by short and shallow streams. Correlations between unit base flow and stream density, altitude or geological unit were not proved.

Opis:
This paper deals with the structural factors affecting shrinkage phenomena. Seventy eight soil samples were tested, including: Neogene (Mio-Pliocene) clays, glacial tills, clayey alluvial soils, bentonite, illitic clay and kaolinite. Destructed soils (remoulded samples) were compared with undisturbed soils (NNS). Analysis of shrinkage curves showed that the most hydrophilic clays and well-graded soils have the lowest void ratio and shrinkage limit. Shrinkage curves ofsilty and sandy soils are relatively plane with poorly differentiated shrinkage stages. For Neogene clays, shrinkage curves of remoulded samples are similar to the undisturbed ones. Both series of samples yielded similar final void ratio and shrinkage limit values. For alluvial soils and glacial tills, remoulded samples yielded a lower void ratio and higher shrinkage limit values than NNS samples. The results obtained showed that the soil fabric (natural preserved versus disturbed) does not influence shrinkage of Neogene clays while affects significantly shrinkage of alluvial soils and glacial tills. The statistical analysis revealed that there was no correlation between shrinkage limit and clay content or plastic index. A linear rela¬tionship was found between shrinkage limit and void ratio for clays as well as remoulded samples.

Opis:
Gas produced from coal can be subdivided into three categories: coalbed methane (CBM), coal mine methane (CMM) and abandoned mine methane (AMM). CBM is extracted from virgin coal using wells drilled from the surface. In recent years horizontal drilling is widely used as a primary CBM recovery technique. A pair of wells - a vertical production well intersected by a horizontal multilateral well - is considered the most effective in dewatering a coal reservoir and thus enables maximizing its productivity. Although CBM world resources are huge (100-216 bcm), only a few countries produce coalbed gas commercially. While the US is still the leader, Australia has the fastest CBM production growth. It has been observed that many mature CBM plays reveal highly variable productivity, possibly due to coal heterogeneity. Therefore, CBM reserves/resources should be estimated using probabilistic methods. In spite of its substantial CBM resource potential, Poland has produced only coal mine methane (CMM) whereas significant efforts of CBM exploration conducted in the 1990s failed to flow gas in commercial quantities due to low permeability. Dart Energy operates a CBM exploration license in the Upper Silesia and has recently finished testing the CBM production pilot using a surface-to-inseam horizontal well with vertical production well intersection. This state-of-the-art CBM completion technology has been used for the first time in Poland and, hopefully, will unlock the sizeable CBM resource of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin.

Opis:
Geohazards are defined as extreme events which occur in the lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. In Poland, landslides and earthquakes are the most dangerous for human activities. Currently, the number of recognized landslides is estimated at about 58,000. The largest damages of buildings and other infrastructures are registered in the years of 2000-2001 and 2010, which were caused by a high amount of rainfall in the spring-summer period. In an attempt to prevent localization of new facilities on danger zones, cataloguing of landslides has been made. Moreover, perilous objects are monitored with different methods. Another threat is earthquakes, observed in southern Poland, along the Teisseyre-Tronquist Zone, which cause damage of buildings. Apart from earthquakes of tectonic origin, equally hazardous are movements that cause deformation of the earth ’s surface, triggered by mining exploitation.

The paper presents preliminary results of possible application of SAR interferometry in the studies of landslides. Two areas have been selected: Wieliczka and Nowy Sącz. The application of InSAR (SAR Interferometry) in the Carpathians is difficult due to rough topography, vegetation and long season with the snow cover. Such problems may be overridden by applying PSInSAR (Persistent Scatterers SAR Interferometry) which utilizes long time series of the SAR data. PSInSAR was used for both areas. Obtained sets of PS points show evidence of the landslide movement. The most reliable points were then used in quantitative cartographic study to qualify activity of slopes. Analysis of landslide dynamics was performed for the area of Wieliczka where, for instance, a landslide velocity movement in Lednica Górna reaches 74.8 mm/yr. The preliminary results are very promising for the development of PSInSAR methodology in the study of landslides in Poland.

Development of building projects in the Mazovia region causes the risk of their location on the soils of specific expansive properties. These properties, expressed as swelling or shrinkage, are a serious engineering problem. Many methods are used for the evaluation ofexpansiveness; both direct and indirect test methods are used. Tests were performed on clays from the areas of Warsaw, Dobre near Mińsk Mazowiecki and Mszczonów. Comparative analysis of expansive properties of Neogene clays is based on the results of laboratory tests of mineral composition, grain size distribution, moisture content, free swelling and swelling pressure. The tests have shown that the expansive properties ofclays from the Mazowsze region can have extremely high values, which causes the needfor individual determination of potential expan-siveness for different types of clays, depending on moisture content, swelling pressure and chemistry of the environment.

The development of coal mining and power industry contributed to the accumulation of significant quantities of mining and processing wastes on the land surface in Wałbrzych and Boguszów Gorce. The main components of the mine waste dumps are gangues rocks and in smaller quantities: post-flotation waste and slag and ashes. Approximately 85 million cubic meters of such waste are disposed on the dumps with a volume over 1 million cubic meters. Approximately 3.4 million cubic meters of coal sludge and ashes remains in the bowls of former sedimentation tanks. The majority of the waste (81%) is located in the area of Wałbrzych. In the years 1975–1996, only approx. 1% of the waste from the mine waste dumps and sedimentation tanks was used for various purposes. Significant amounts of the waste accumulated on the land surface can be considered as prospective anthropogenic deposits. This is indicated by the attempts made so far to use them as secondary raw materials as well as by few studies providing the information for what purposes the waste can be used. It is therefore necessary to carry out detailed identification works on the quality and quantity of the deposited wastes, what is a prerequisite for the optimal use of these wastes in the future.

Opis:
When conducting geological surveys in landslide areas, it is important to define the scope of the planned geological works. The most important issue in the study of landslides is the recognition of the depth and shape of the slip surface. This requires the correct type of drilling and a good core quality. Most often, within a single landslide, several slip surfaces are documented, which occur at different depths, which is associated with a complex manner of motion and shear. Proper determination of the deepest sliding surfaces allows for the construction of a calculation model and selection of the optimal method of securing the landslide area. The course of the slip surface is often not determined by the depth of the bedrock under the cover formations. Geological diagnosis should depend on the size of the examined landslide and the impact of its activation on potential damage / destruction of existing buildings and technical infrastructure. The method of documenting and carrying out calculations is presented as recommended in landslide areas. In the first step, calculations should be made on the basis of data obtained from field work and parameters obtained from laboratory tests. Monitoring should complement field research and assess the scale of displacements. Conducting stability calculations should be a standard for the preparation of geological and engineering documentation of landslides and areas at risk of mass movements. It allows you to assess the risk and threats to the planned investment or protective structure. This is to provide permanent safeguards to prevent damage to buildings that have been designed on the basis of uncertain geological data. It is postulated to modify the ordinance on the implementation of geological and engineering documentation by adding a point concerning the documentation of landslides. If there is such an area, special requirements must be met when conducting geological surveys.

Mineral composition of each lithology consists of quartz, feldspar, mica, clay minerals (including kaolinite, the content of which decreases upward the section), and carbonates (calcite and siderite). The section is a continuous record of reduction and rise in terrigenous input. Mineral detritus is least weathered in the uppermost part of the Anthracosia Shales. The sedimentation occurred under dysoxic conditions that were ventilated by bottom currents.
