Opis:
Janusz Korczak engaged children in writing novels intended for them. His writing experiments consisted in directly transferring children’s ideas to the paper, correcting and reworking the stories under the influence of the listeners’ comments, removing and cutting fragments of the text at their request. Following Korczak’s method, a reconstruction of understanding by modern children of created 85 years ago novel “Kajtuś Czarodziej” was made. Based on focus interviews, it was established that the fairytale context of reading is read by children on a multithreaded basis, filtered by reference to the present day, critically evaluated by older children. The linguistic layer is acceptable, while the transfer of the fairytale aspect to real life does not suit the contemporary young recipients. The children’s suggestions regarding the new plots of reading were mainly of mimetic character in relation to the original.

Opis:
The text outlines fragments of Georgian Romani and Dom children’s reality through the prism of their everyday life and educational practices. Romani (or Roma) and Dom children are usually perceived by the majority of society as well as by national and ethnic minorities as an identical, uniform group. Their images are burdened with stereotypes and they themselves – as begging participants in public space – have become inconvenient for the majority of the society, hence excluded and marginalized. With regard to social representations, Roma and Dom children can be included in the category of “street children”, children “out of place”, “invisible” children, and children remaining “at the crossroads” of tradition and postmodernity. A portrayal of the situation of Roma and Dom minorities in Georgia reveals the reality of children in big city environments as well as the dimensions of their social exclusion and poverty. The text was written within field research: “The forgotten minorities in Georgia” conducted by the author in 2013 and 2014 in Georgia, South Caucasus.

The article presents one of the most avant-garde educational experiences for young children in the world. The first preschools in Reggio Emilia (Italy) were established after the Second World War and they have been under the supervision of the municipality for over 45 years. The main initiator and educator of this early childhood practice was Loris Malaguzzi (1920–1994). One of the reasons for this long-lasting project is the readiness of Reggio Emilia educators to cross boundaries, and another is their openness to new ideas and perspectives. They take their inspiration not only from pedagogy, but from philosophy, the exact sciences, architecture, literature, and visual communication as well. Inspired by different ideas and theories, being reflective and inquiring, they interpret and construct their own concepts and theories instead of reproducing them.

The dispute on the possibility and shape of teaching religion in the public school has been going on for centuries. And although this education has found its place in school, the debate that is around them means that in the face of the challenges of pluralism, multiculturalism and multi-religiousness, it must constantly determine its status, mission, goals and tasks. There are still numerous doubts as to whether the school is at all the most appropriate place for shaping the sensitive areas of the human spirit, which is the religious worldview. The purpose of this text is to reflect on the place and role of existential questions in (Polish) early religious education. The text also asks about the dialogical nature of teaching, which is a cardinal prerequisite for philosophical inquiry in education (including religious education). For the purpose of this study, the analysis of “Basic Program of the Catechesis of the Catholic Church in Poland” from 2010 and 2018 was made.

The paper presents the results of the research on consumer experience of 6–7 year old children investigated from the child’s perspective. The authors employed the method of interview with the child about TV advertisements, using stimulus material. The authors state that children recognize TV advertisements shown for them, make a distinction between advertisements and other television programmes, and have a certain knowledge about them. The study disclosed that the child’s approach to advertising depends on adults’ behaviour. It also revealed rudiments of critical assessment of advertising, which are mainly determined by negative experience of the child itself using the advertised item. According to the authors, in order to achieve the child’s critical attitude towards consumption and advertising, the adult who is together with the child must have similar features and values.

The aim of the following text is to present various manners of thinking about adults by five-year olds. On the basis of group interviews the author tries to recognize how children perceive adults. Despite the fact that this research ought to be treated only as a case study, the outcome shown in the essay depicts the children’s world. What is more it also shows how we, the adults, rear children. It was demonstrated that children view us as individuals physically resembling themselves, extremely busy at work, privileged when it comes to doing things that children cannot, great role models and good guardians. They do realize that in the adult world there are people who can do harm to them. To us it may seem that all these revelations are nothing new, but the results can show that we fail to treat children as partners.

Opis:
This article analyses the situation of a child placed in an isolation facility in the context of contemporary trends in treating children and adolescents by the judiciary and in educational and resocialisation facilities. The system of juvenile re-socialisation in Poland, regulated by the Act on Juvenile Delinquency Proceedings of 1982, covers children and adolescents in connection with their depravation or with committing a punishable offence and it provides for institutional educational measures and reformatory measures in the form of sending a minor to a juvenile detention centre. Although a prison sentence passed on minors is an exception to the rule of adjudicating educational and reformatory measures, according to international regulations, the category of juvenile imprisonment is broader than serving a sentence in prison. It is our intention to consider the situation of a child placed outside their home in an institution where they are exposed to confinement by a court or another administrative body.

Opis:
The paper presents two faces of the problem of corporal punishment. One is a global tendency or even a movement towards forbidding all forms of violence against children, and also those that have been traditionally presented in upbringing. There are several international legal instruments that undertake the problem of corporal punishment, starting from the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The most important ones are reviewed in the paper as well as some global initiatives that are being undertaken especially in the last decade. The other face of the problem is a practice of the everyday upbringing of children which can still be described as violent, a practice where parents still approve some violent behaviours and still behave violently towards their children. The paper presents a part of the survey carried out among parents of children below 18 years old. The results show that violence in upbringing is visible in Poland, that corporal punishment is still accepted and experienced by Polish children, although in Poland there has been an official ban of corporal punishment since 2010. The survey shows that both knowledge on the law and parents’ attitudes towards some violent behaviours should be corrected.

The aim of this paper is to present results of critical analyses of Polish children’s songs. Having analysed the lyrics of more than eighty Polish children’s songs, the author couched main categories construing the image of the social world presented in them. The qualitative research revealed propaganda role of the language used in children’s songs: the features of social world (i.e. people, places, relationships, behaviours and values) that are presented in these songs often transmit strongly stereotypical and oversimplified vision of the social reality. In this sense, social education is based on manipulation in which lyrics are the main tool of symbolic violence.

In the present article I outline the situation of children who belong to an indigenous community of Ba’Aka Pygmies, a group inhabiting the Sangha-Mbaéré region of rainforest in the Central African Republic. These children are inscribed in the categories of “invisible” and “unheard” children. They are also deprived of the right to be properly researched. This is due to a number of external and internal factors which shape the contemporary reality of the formerly colonised country. Despite the fact that the Central African Republic broke free from colonial oppression, since 1960s it has been experiencing internal colonisation and civilising missions by the countries of the Global North so as to be “fruitfully” written in the narrative of national development. Thus, referring to key categories, I discuss postcolonial representations: images and narratives perceived through the perspective of a female researcher who, since 2002, has conducted field research among excluded and marginalised children and young people in fragile (vulnerable) contexts in Central Africa.

SHOCK, as a recurring category that has been present for many years in the discourse on the right of the child/human to freedom from all forms of violence, becomes the focal point around which the considerations of this article are focused. The inspiration for the use of the shock category in education was the process of studying Anton Siemionowicz Makarenko’s Pedagogical Poemate and the analysis of the educational system he created along practical directives for parenting and its pedagogical implications. In the text, a fundamental question is raised about how Makarenko used SHOCK as a tool in the educational process? The text presents an analysis of the SHOCK category based on the behavior of violence against a child and analyzes their pedagogical implications.

The paper presents the problem of violence in upbringing from a historical and contemporary perspective. The reflection is focused on the situation in Poland – both in the past and today. A lot of historical resources indicate that violence in upbringing was a common reality for children in Poland from the Middle Ages and during the following centuries. Today in Poland violence in upbringing is banned in our law and although violent behaviours towards children are less popular and not as severe as in the past, still as a way of disciplining a child violence is in some forms socially accepted. The paper presents the results of the survey carried out in 2015 which is part of the monitoring which has been conducted by the Ombudsman for Children since 2011.

The paper describes the results of the survey focused on the social attitudes towards violence in upbringing made in 2015. The survey is a means of monitoring violence against children carrying out by the Ombudsman for Children since 2011. The research findings reveal a declining tendency in violence in upbringing acceptance over the study period. However, the violence in upbringing acceptance among the Poles remains at a high level. The survey shows that too many Poles consider beating children to be an effective method of upbringing and that too many parents use spanking and beating in their everyday relations with children. The final part of the paper concentrates on the possible solutions to stop using corporal punishment in Poland.
