Opis:
Emotion may be treated as a special sort of message considering that communicative function is one of the basic functions of emotion. Moreover emotion serves as a message in two ways. In one way facial expression of emotion is a message to other participants of social interaction that contains information about the emotional state of the subject and thus plays important interpersonal role. It shows the subject’s personal attitude and amplifies verbal messages or makes them more credible. Numerous empirical studies show that processes of generating and perceiving of facial expressions of emotions are autonomic and specific. In the other way emotion is an internal message containing information about the significance of events or thoughts and thus helping in making choices or taking decissions.

The linguistic ways of presenting emotions such as communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have not been the subject of linguistic analysis. The majority of the oldest linguistic relics are mostly the texts published both in transliterated and transcribed versions and may constitute a basis for large-scale research of vocabulary. Słownik staropolski 1953–2002 (The Dictionary of Old Polish 1953–2002) and resulting The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are a valuable help in the analysis of presenting emotions in medieval texts. The article presents the categories of concepts in The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish that concern emotions. The autosemantic continuous and discontinuous units are assigned to 26 conceptual categories concerning emotions. The contents of the category shame from The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are described in order to show the way of presenting data. The general principles of the comprehensive study on communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have been formulated.

A translator, recreating the original, creatively stimulates her/his intellect, knowledge, senses and emotions. At the same time, s/he remains in agreement with the emotions presented in the original by assuming with respect to it the only ethically possible attitude, namely empathy. The presence of her/his own emotions in translation, such as sympathy or antipathy, is ethically unacceptable. Emotions occupy an important place in translation because of the difficulty regarding their linguistic transfer, interpretation of their function in the original, intercultural communication differences, and because of the attitude of the translator towards the original. Problems related to emotions concern the art of translation and the need for emotional detachment of the translator, who at the same time needs to maintain an empathic attitude towards the original. Emotions should be considered both on the internal level of the text (the original and the translation) and on the external one – the translator’s perspective.

Opis:
This article addresses means of expressing and implying emotions (Langlotz, Locher 2012) in realizations of impoliteness in written discourse thematizing language and identity in Croatian and Montenegrin media in 2010 and 2011. Realizations of impoliteness often relate to communicating an emotional stance that can trigger emotional responses in readers. Our discourse sample can be described as “disputes about language and identity” (cf. Felberg, Šarić 2013), which is largely characterized by conflictual disagreements. Conflictual disagreements, as Jones (2001) or Langlotz and Locher (2012) put it, do not leave one cold in face-to-face interaction: they arouse feelings of annoyance, irritation, anger, or contempt directed to the communicative partner. These observations are relevant in our context, although we deal with written discourse. The main participants in our data include well-known intellectuals, journalists, and editors. They all defend or attaca a position in discussing, among other things, “how similar ‘our’ language (Croatian/Montenegrin) is to ‘their’ language” (Serbian), and “what makes this language (Croatian/Montenegrin) a distinctive and independent entity”. These participants clearly position themselves in relation to other participants. Their positioning of the self and the other person involves negative identity-ascribing practices. Taking into consideration parameters such as the role of participants in discourse and society, context, co-text, and activity types in which discourse participants engaged, we identified various highly context-dependent types and functions of impoliteness realizations (cf. Šarić, Felberg 2015). Contrary to our expectations, the participants in the media discourse in both countries frequently use impoliteness both strategically and systematically while defending their positions. The impoliteness realizations point to emotively significant places in discourse. Their use has several functions: a prominent one is coercion through legitimizing one’s own standpoints and delegitimizing those of one’s opponents.

The aim of the presented analysis is to show the exponents of excitement in the online genre – father’s blogs. Men’s parenting blogs reflect changes in the field of parenting, where father begins to appear – as an active and participating. This role goes beyond the stereotype of the male and the previous experience of fathers – both media and private. Therefore, the paternal narrative in blogs is for linguists valuable research material, that shows, among others, different aspects of male emotionality and ways to verbalize it. The emotional component of father`s image is created by means expressing feelings (not naming them), polyfunctional, used in unusual combinations and contexts.

Postmodern phenomena, such as consumerism, media development, twilight of grand narratives, transformation of the aesthetics of the text, expansion of popular culture or value system instability, which create a melancholic anxiety. Characteristics of postmodern melancholy language have been analyzed which is also the language of women’s depression. The theme, most often undertaken by poets, turned out to be the body and language.

Opis:
In the past fifteen years, the Polish linguistics faced a significant increase of interest in research into positive emotions: their naming, the ways in which they are expressed and manifested in the texts. The largest group of such research pieces concerns the field of joy and happiness and includes the noun “humor” and its derivatives. The semantic development of the above-mentioned noun can be traced basing on lexicographical sources: ‘body fluids’ (XVI c., the meaning disappears in the nineteenth century) – ‘character, temperament, mood’ (XVII c.) – ‘good mood’ (XVII c.) – ‘whim, fantasy’ (XVIII c., this meaning becomes soon characteristic solely for the plural uses) – ‘type of comedy’ (XIX c.). Being less aggressive, more intellectual and requiring developer cultural competence from both the sender and the receiver, “humor” in the latter sense quite soon begins to be regarded as more valuable than the other types of comedy. High evaluation is attributed also to “humor” in the sense of ‘character, temperament’, associated with positive emotions such as joy, serenity and optimism.

The love, sexuality and the punishment in the Macedonian traditional culture is considered on the basic of the ethnological-anthropological analyze. The analyze is based on the oral stories, ritual practices and oral poetry, which I take as means of communication. The love and the love emotions were in accordance with social and cultural criteria of the community in which occurred. This means that the love emotions, primarily the sexual emotions, had to be controlled, or to be shown as much as the traditional culture allowed. In general this was meant for the women and the maidens, „a woman’s chastity”, that implies the women’s purity and innocence. Otherwise the punishment commences. The betrayed young woman that has totally surrendered to the love emotions or the unjustly accused wife of infidelity is reaching towards the curse in order to satisfy the justice.

It’s also an act used by the user to build websites’ participant image. Among positive acts we can distinguish acts of praising, which praise the way of closing the deal, product’s quality, contractor or the message itself. The second group consists of courtesy acts or polite sentences used In the acts of praising. Neutral comments are dominated by complaints. Their content has usually negative tone, however the addressees tend to ease them with means of such words as “unfortunately” or other words reflecting how sorry they are. The list of negative comments is dominated by acts of warning and advice. Users who initiate communication usually use censorious tone which causes asymmetry in relations between them and the addressee. The study shows that users willingly use their own words to rate the service and in addition to graphic scale and template offered by the website they describe their emotions.

On the other hand, the nonspecific limits inspired by language can be noticed in the area of changes in emotion meaning. Two studies were conducted and metaheuristic postulates were involved with the aim of breaking these limits. The denotation and emotional complexity were examined/analyzed in the first study. In the second study the atypical connotations taken from the psychology of creativity were used. The outcomes were discussed in relation to abstraction and metaphor as a result it is possible to go beyond literal understanding of emotions and express emotions verbally.

The object of the linguistic analysis are articles published in the years 1895–2005 in „Przewodnik Katolicki” – one of the oldest Polish periodicals and the oldest Catholic weekly in Poland, chich to a large extent has preserved its traditional line. The research conducted in this paper is of an empirical, material and interpretative character. Its purpose is the analysis of linguistic facto excerpted from „Przewodnik Katolicki” which were used by the magazine editors to express positive emotions. Only morphological indicators of positive emotions (inflectional expressive forms, morphological expressive forms) have been analyzed. Analyzing the expressive forms, the author reveals their factual emotional values coded in the elements constituting those constructions, i.e. inflectional morphemes and morphological formants. To achieve this goal he also takes into consideration other aspects of the process of expression. He includes both interactions between the constituent elements (the inner context) of inflectional and morphological structures and the activity of other components of an utterance or consituation which jointly organize the emotional meaning of expressive forms. The reconstructed senses are presented in the form of explications, following the ideas of Anna Wierzbicka and Stanisław Grabias, as analytical formulas equivalent with the defined constructions.

In this paper we (re-)examine the role of deliberate metaphors in the public discourse. Based on an analysis of metaphorical comments to the articles reporting on a dispute between the Croatian Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, we argue that in addition to a number of established discursive functions, metaphor may perform a therapeutic function aiding commenters in working through their emotions. Our analyses of the course that comments take shows that they are not structured according to a usual turn-taking logic, but rather on the basis of the coherence of the emotions shared by the commenters. Moreover, the tripartite internal structure of the comments (identifying the critical event, running the blend, possibly offering a solution to the critical event) is aimed at symbolically delegitimizing politicians, putting the author in charge of the experience, thus enabling him/her to work through it. Theoretically, such a view suggests that on the discourse level it is not necessarily metaphor that is used as the structuring device, but that emotion can structure metaphor.
