The present article analyses trigrams – words constructions that have properties of phrasemes. The studied trigrams have been excerpted from task-oriented dialogues (conducted between participants of a linguistic experiment). It turns out that phrasematic trigrams perform different communication and semantic functions: establishing and enhancing contact, feedback positive, “simple adverbiality” and “complex adverbiality”. The article is a follow-up to the author’s previous article on bi-grams: Bi-grams – Repetitive Two-word-structures in Task-oriented Dialogues.

The article describes the methods of the SMS genre use, emphasising language competency (system proficiency) and communication competency (including pragmatic competency) of the tested group. The author presents the results of tests performed on a group of children with hearing disability (with various rate and type of hearing disability) aged 12–16 and confronts the results with the results achieved in the group of children without hearing issues (development norm). The article attempts to determine the mutual relations between language and communication competency acquisition by children with hearing disability and their genre competency. Short Message Service (SMS) was used as an example genre.

The article discusses the practical use of plain language rules in editing law-related texts. The author believes that it is possible and worth the effort to write legal texts in accordance with the rules of plain language, i.e. with the expected reader in mind, giving examples of rewritten sentences taken from the articles for an online law portal. The author divides the processes in terms of ‘structural order’ and ‘linguistic order’ and shows that even cosmetic editing in the spirit of plain language, without affecting the text’s structure, improves its intelligibility.

The purpose of the article is to present a communication and language analysis of agent texts on the Polish literary environment prepared by personal sources of information in the years 1956–1990. Their selection was made by employees of the Institute of National Remembrance from the Warsaw branch of the Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation in a monograph entitled „Twórczość obca nam klasowo”. Aparat represji wobec środowiska literackiego 1956–1990 [“Creativity foreign to our class.” Apparatus of repression against the literary environment from 1956 to 1990]. The analysis applies only to materials that are a direct record or development of a specific denunciation filed by a person registered as a source of information, but does not apply to reports, analysis of situations, statements and other texts authored by the officers of the Security Service. These are sixty-three formally diverse texts consisting of reports, information, notes and remarks from secret collaborators (TW – Tajny Współpracownik), operational contacts (KO – Kontakt Operacyjny), confidential contacts (KP – Kontakt Poufny) and consultants (K – Konsultant). Primarily, the analysis takes into account all description elements of the act of communication and makes an introduction into discourse analysis of secret agent materials originating from the three stages of the Polish People’s Republic. Denunciation resulting in those texts fulfils a social function as a tool for political fight against the opposition and a political function as well, allowing for spreading the belief in the omnipotence of the state and destroying the existing systems of values. The texts are mainly informative, although they are not devoid of emotion expressed linguistically in a variety of ways. The authors are aware of the value of the knowledge conveyed in the texts and of the consequences of denunciation for the people they concerned.

The article deals with the question of teaching a nonverbal code in the foreign language learning process of students coming from Korea. The social principles of Confucian philosophy, generally recognized in the Far East, provide an important context explaining the problems of interference in nonverbal communication and of achieving cultural competence. Several types of nonverbal messages have been presented, with focus on the gestures—inadequate for the Polish cultural code—used by Koreans in communicative situations. It has been stressed that such aspects of the language must be considered in teaching Polish in order for students to achieve sociocultural competence parallely to linguistic competence. In the face of worldwide promotion of the Polish language, the inclusion of nonverbal communication and cultural realities should play a bigger role in the teaching programs and be seen as important, although often omitted elements.

The subject of the article is the structure and linguistic shape of a specific type of legal genre – the reasons for the judgement. The authors, as members of the project and training team, actively participate in the transformation of the communication standards for the Polish judiciary community. They work with the assumption that the long-standing tradition of legal communication is hermetic and results in texts which are uncommunicative and unintelligible to an average reader. In the article, the authors present the social, media, linguistic and communication contexts of such texts. They emphasise their retropical character and indicate the possible direction of changes towards less hermetic and more everyday communication experiences, closer to the average reader. In the conclusion, they underline the importance of the intelligibility of a text as the basic parameter of effective communication and advocate for a systemic change of contemporary legal communication. Based on the texts of reasons for the judgement, they show that such a change is possible as long as it is accepted by the judiciary community in the first place.

The paper reviews the methods for improving verbal communication in selected variants of Alzheimer’s disease, both in the typical and language variant. It emphasises the need to optimise the management within the framework of patientcentred care, allowing to address individual needs. As far as indirect interventions are concerned, the article presents techniques aimed at improving communication with the affected person, and more broadly – aimed at preserving the quality of life in the course of the illness. Among direct interventions, those aimed at selected system abilities and supporting language function in the context of cognitive and social function are presented. It is shown how speech and language therapy can integrate other therapeutic paradigms, developed in psychology, such as patientcentred therapy and cognitive neuropsychological rehabilitation.

Case studies of children with autism indicate that there are still many patterns in therapy and that assessing the abilities of non-speaking children is a huge problem. The search for individually-adapted communication strategies should be emphasised. Writing offers great opportunities for communication, however, it is often not offered to nonspeaking children, especially those with profound perceptual disorders.

The authors of the article evaluate social-communicative problems of the minority group of Roma Gypsies in Poland. The existing low linguistic competence is additionally constrained by the accompanying insufficient communicative competence. The authors emphasize that teaching of a foreign language, in this particular case of the dominant language in the country, is effective only when it is simultaneously enhanced by a corresponding interaction between the two cultures in question. The authors indicate the barriers to cultural integration that hamper the community’s capacity and capability of establishing the relationships between these communities that would be based on partnership and mutual respect: these barriers include the orality and the tabooisation of Romany culture as well as its unfamiliarity to the Poles. This, in turn, generates patterns for statements and utterances in which ceremonial patterns are of secondary importance. It is rather the pragmatic factor that governs a particular linguistic behaviour: the Romany people simply want to understand the message and want to be understood. The article stresses that the present unfortunate social communication can be changed in the future by the implementation of appropriate activities within educational strategies directed towards the target group.

The subject of this article is the manner of addressing strangers in Polish. In order to verify the current use of the language in this regard, two research methods were used: a survey method and an analysis of comments on a website aimed at the business community. As the respondents of the survey indicated, the contemporary Polish language speakers recognise the importance of the traditional border of officiality when choosing the appropriate forms of address. However, a problem in communication arises when the conceptual opposition of the official / unofficial intersects with the opposition of ours / others. This problem is sometimes observed in a business conversation, in which a recruiter addresses a job candidate using Polish ty form from the first contact and treats them as a person on the “our” side. The analysis of the comments from the internet showed that the relationship between the recruiter and the candidate basically remains between strangers and it is better to avoid the use of unofficial forms, especially those which use the addressee's first name.
