Opis:
Efficient methods of utilization of waste chloroorganic compounds coming from waste water and the waste streams formed e.g. in the production of vinyl chloride by dichloroethane method and in the production of propylene oxide by chlorohydrin method have been presented. First the separation of chloroorganic wastes by the adsorption methods has been described in the article. Three valuable methods of hlorocompounds utilization have been then discussed. The first one is isomerization of 1,1,2-trichloroethane to 1,1,1- trichloroethane as the valuable product with less toxicity than a substrate. The second method is ammonolysis of waste 1,2-dichloropropane and 1,2,3-trichloropropane. The third described method is chlorolysis. This method can be used for the utilization of all types of waste chloroorganics.

Opis:
The potential of burned water hyacinth (BWH) for phenol adsorption from aqueous solution was studied. Batch kinetic and isotherm studies were carried out under varying experimental conditions of contact time, phenol concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The pH at the point of zero charge (pH(PZC)) of the adsorbent was determined by the titration method and the value of 8.8 š 0.2 was obtained. The FTIR of the adsorbent was carried out in order to find the potential adsorption sites for the interaction with phenol molecules. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models were used for the mathematical description of adsorption equilibrium and it was found that the experimental data fitted very well to the Langmuir model. Maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was found to be 30.49 mg/g. Batch adsorption models, based on the assumption of the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, were applied to examine the kinetics of the adsorption. The results showed that kinetic data closely followed the pseudo-second-order model.

Opis:
This paper presents the feasibility of the removal of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions by using activated carbon prepared from Cajanus Cajan(L) Milsp. It was carbonized and activated by treating it with concentrated sulfuric acid followed by heating for 5 h at 500oC. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of pH, contact time, initial concentration of the adsorbate, adsorbent dosage and temperature. The experimental data fi tted well to the Freundlich isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters such as ΔHo, ΔSo, and ΔGo were calculated, which indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The adsorbent used in this study was characterized by FT-IR and SEM before and after the adsorption of metal ions. The results indicate that Cajanus Cajan(L) Milsp can be employed as a low cost alternative and commercial adsorbents in the removal of chromium (VI) from water and waste water.

Opis:
The components of fresh vegetable oils are mainly non-polar. During frying of food, complex and multistage reactions occur in the oil, which produce various polar compounds. Active carbons are characterized by small contents of polar functional groups, which are responsible for adsorbing such polar compounds. Effective purification of the used frying oils must involve the removal of the polar substances. To improve the quality of the used palm oil, an active carbon oxidized by a hydrogen peroxide treatment was used. Such a carbonaceous adsorbent improves the quality of the oil used for frying food by purifying it from colour substances, lipid hydrolysis products, oxidation products and total polar compounds.

The adsorption behavior of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in aqueous solutions on silica aerogels modified with amino propyl triethoxysilane was investigated as a function of pH, contact time, adsorbate concentration and adsorbent dose. It was found that maximum adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions occurs at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0, respectively. The optimum contact time to obtain equilibrium adsorption with the modified silica aerogel was experimentally found to be around 48h. Adsorption isotherms clearly indicated that the adsorption behavior of metals ions on the modified silica aerogels is fitted well with both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on modified silica aerogel were found to be 45.45mg/g and 35.71mg/g, respectively. The results indicated that silica aerogels modified with amino functional groups can be used as an efficient adsorbent in the removal of metal ions such as Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions.

The microporous carbon materials were prepared by chemical activation of Polish coal with potassium hydroxide using the simplex design method for planning the experiments. The experimental parameters were varied to identify the optimum conditions. Coal can be an excellent starting material for the preparation of high porous carbons for natural gas storage. The porosity of the resultant carbons was characterized by nitrogen adsorption (-196oC). Methane adsorption was investigated in a volumetric laboratory installation at range pressures from 1 to 3.5 MPa (25oC). The best results of methane storage capacity (557 cm3 . g-1) were obtained when using an impregnation ratio 3.41/1 KOH/precursor and temperature at 592oC, (SLANG = 2091 m2 . g-1). The parameters of the preparation of high porosity and high methane adsorption carbon were determined by a fast and simple method.

Opis:
A method was developed to attach 2,2-bipyridine (BP) onto a silica gel surface by a two-step reaction. The fi rst step consisted of a reaction between the matrix and a silylating agent, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane. In the second step of the reaction, a ligand molecule was attached onto Si-CPTS, yielding the product Si-BP. The modified material contained 0.431±0.01 mmol of 2,2-bipyridine per gram of modified silica, as confirmed by FT-IR spectra of the proposed structure. The surface modification was characterized by the BET technique, which revealed a decrease in the surface area from 614 to 450 m2 g-1. The series of adsorption isotherms for the metal ions were adjusted to fit a modified Langmuir equation. The maximum number of moles of copper, cadmium and lead ions adsorbed was 0.64, 0.53, and 0.54 mmol g-1, respectively. The surface saturation was calculated as ¢ fraction and the values obtained, Cu(II) =1.160, Cd(II) = 1.044 and Pb(II) = 0.997, suggest a type 1:1 metal-ligand complex.

The results of the studies of bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether adsorption from aqueous solution onto AG5 activated carbon were presented here. Dynamic adsorptivity, mass transfer zone and the velocity of the adsorption front of the 10cm adsorption bed depth for the velocity of flow 9 and 25 cm/min were determined. For the regeneration of the adsorption bed, acetone rinsing was used. Total washout of adsorbed bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether from the bed was obtained. After the regeneration the adsorbent has not shown deterioration of adsorption properties. To isolate bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) ether from acetone, distillation was used.

Opis:
A plant waste, rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) leaf powder was modified with carbon disulfide (xanthation) for the purpose of introducing sulfur groups, and the adsorbent performance in removing Pb(II) ion was evaluated. Pb(II) adsorption was confirmed by spectroscopic analysis, which involved Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The amount of Pb(II) adsorbed increased with increasing pH, contact time and concentration but slightly decreased with increasing ionic strength. Adsorption equilibrium was achieved in less than 60 min and followed the pseudo-second order model. The isotherm data indicated that Pb(II) adsorption on xanthated rubber leaf (XRL) fitted well with Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity computed from the Langmuir isotherm model was 166.7 mg/g. Pb(II) adsorption occurred via ion-exchange and complexation mechanisms.

Opis:
In this study dependences of the adsorption equilibrium of 1,2-dichloropropane in aqueous solution for six activated carbons (A, AG, AG5, DTO, WD-ekstra, CWZ-22) and four polymeric adsorbents (XE-563, XE-572, XE-340, XE-348) were presented. All the adsorption isotherms onto activated carbons were described by the Freundlich equation. To analyze the isotherms on the polymeric adsorbents the Langmuir-Freundlich equation was used. It was found that in the low range of the concentrations the adsorptive properties of the activated carbons are reduced in the following direction DTO>WD-ekstra>CWZ-22>AG>A>AG5. Reducing the adsorptive properties of the polymeric adsorbents states was carried out in the following order: XE-340> XE-572>XE-563>XE-348. The adsorbents XE-340, XE-572 and XE-563 have much more higher adsorptive properties than the applied activated carbons. Lower adsorptive properties of XE-348 are the result of its high surface polarity.

Adsorption of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) from aqueous solutions by granulated modifi ed nanozeolites Y was investigated. Nanozeolite Y powders were converted into granulated zeolites and subsequently modifi ed with two cationic surfactants (20 mmol/dm3), to be used as adsorbent. Granulated nanozeolites were characterized by BET surface area analysis, elemental analysis and X-ray diffractometer. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA-Cl) modifi ed granulated zeolite had more effective performance than N-cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) modifi ed granulated zeolite. The most conventional adsorption isotherms and kinetic models were applied to describe MTBE adsorption and reaction dynamic, respectively. The equilibrium sorption data fi tted the Langmuir 2 isotherm model and the kinetic study was followed the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities for HDTMA-Cl modifi ed zeolite and CPB modifi ed granulated zeolite were 333.33 and 142.8 mg/g, respectively as calculated by the Langmuir model. This study demonstrated that the removal of mtbe by granulated modifi ed nanozeolites Y is a promising technique.
