Opis:
Tis article discusses the question of the reconstruction of social memory in Polish cities. To illustrate this process the author decided to employ a comparative approach and analyzed this process in two Polish cities: Krakow and Wroclaw. Te case selection was directed by their comparable population size and their importance as cultural and scientifc centres. As far as diferences between the three are concerned, their demographic reproduction patterns are substantially distinct. Krakow has preserved and reproduced its traditional bourgeois character, whereas Wroclaw serves as a typical example of a post-migrant city with an entirely reconstructed identity because of the post-World War II population shifs. Despite their multiethnic composition and heritage, in the formative period for contemporary collective identities in the 19th century these cities built their identities solely with relation to symbolically homogenous contexts (Polish in Krakow and German in Wroclaw). Tese nationally homogeneous discourses were even strengthened during the postwar period and continued long afer WWII. Te breakthrough came with the collapse of communism. Te inhabitants of the cities regained a possibility of social agency and by this token a chance for building new identities. However, these processes did not start from scratch. Tey were determined by existing social and cultural structures which imprinted their particular patterns on their new developments.

Opis:
Present popularity of local tourist products may motivate local municipal environments to reach for specificity based on locality. Local specificity can result from localization on borderland and its multiculturalism. Furthermore, mechanisms of local memory may lead to conscious resignation from these elements of the past that recall multiculturalism of the place. The presented analysis are of secondary character – the in-depth interviews with local brand animators have been focused on issues related to organization of town festival but not on social memory. However, both festivals refer to the past, so it is possible to verify whether local multicultural past is or is not tourist product in Przemyśl or Sanok. The main factor seems to be local memory of local brand animators.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to analyse the conflicts over the memorials (sites of memory) in the space of the binational Polish-Lithuanian community of Sejny. The community of Sejny is the second largest concentration of the Lithuanian minority in Poland. In the second half of the 19th century the city was one of the most important centers of Lithuanian culture and the national revival. During the Interwar Period and the People’s Republic of Poland the region was subjected to the polonization policy, which attempted to remove the traces of Lithuanian culture and strengthen the symbolic dominance of the Polish majority. The systemic transformation in Poland provided Lithuanians with formal guarantees to protect group’s memory. In the article I would like to present the most important activities of the Lithuanian community after 1989 aimed at symbolic commemoration of its national and cultural heritage in the public sphere, Polish reactions to it and the conflicts resulting thereof. Referring to the concepts of social memory and the dispute about symbolic domain, I explore the importance attached by both sides to both already created or just planned sites of memory. In the summary, I consider the role of memorials in the transformation of the identity of the place and its inhabitants.

Opis:
heterogeneous cities, such as Bialystok, each group may have diferent or even contradictory attitudes toward the urban space. Te purpose of this paper is to examine how this space is seen by Bialystok inhabitants and what are the interpretations of the historical center in the ofcial memory of local authorities as well as in the memories of individuals and various communities of memory.Te analyzed data indicate diferences in social perception of urban space in various ethnic, cultural and political groups. Tese diferences suggest that the city center can be symbolically divided into two qualitatively diferent spaces, one of which, better known and prestigious, is associated with the past of the dominant Polish-Catholic group, while the other is the space less recognized and valued, which implies the past of other cultures. At the borderline of these two spaces, several conficts over space occurred in recent years. Te results suggest that Bialystok lacks a coherent perception of space and intergroup conficts over space may be repeated in the future.
