Opis:
Structural, physicochemical and adsorption properties of two natural and one synthetic molecular sieves were investigated by various techniques: X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and inverse gas chromatography. The influence of these properties on the ability to adsorb two model fragrances: p-cymene and menthol was studied. The free enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy of adsorption of fragrance molecules on the surface of zeolite and zeolite-like materials were estimated by using inverse gas chromatography. Also, the influence of temperature on the stability of solid-fragrance compound systems as well as the release of the adsorbed fragrance compounds was studied. The obtained results exhibit that both porosity and chemical composition of molecular sieves influence the size and strength of adsorption of fragrance compounds. The study indicated different release characteristics for p-cymene and menthol.

Opis:
The study of the kinetics and statics of cobalt adsorption at the hydroxyapatite/electrolyte interface using radioactive isotope 60Co was conducted. The course of adsorption kinetics indicates that at the beginning adsorption proceeds quickly and then slowly. Such adsorption kinetics is best described by a multiexpotential equation. The analysis of cobalt adsorption as a function of pH and the results of H+ ions desorption/adsorption confirmed that cobalt adsorption proceeds due to ion exchange with calcium ions in the crystal lattice and hydrogen ions in the surface groups of hydroxyapatite. Cobalt ions adsorption results in the increase of the electrokinetic potential but for the solution of the initial concentration of 0.001 mol/dm3 at pH = 8.17 a reversal of the charge due to overloading of the compact layer (edl) is observed.

Opis:
In order to remove the harmful metal ions in lead-zinc mineral processing wastewater, two natural clay minerals (bentonite and kaolin) were used as adsorbents and Zn(II) ions were the emphasis in this work. The adsorption behaviors including kinetics and isotherms were investigated by batch experiments. In addition, the adsorption mechanisms were studied by means of zeta potential testing, optical microscope and XRD analysis. The results show that the adsorption process can be best described as the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The adsorption equilibrium data of bentonite and kaolinite can be respectively fitted best by Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic studies display that the adsorption of Zn(II) onto clays is non-spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum capacity of Zn(II) adsorbed on bentonite and kaolinite respectively reaches to 79.2 mg·g-1 and 6.35 mg·g-1 at 25 °C. The structural differences of bentonite and kaolinite result in the differences in adsorption behavior and mechanism. The interaction mechanisms of Zn(II) with bentonite and kaolinite involve electrostatic attraction, cation exchange, surface complex and precipitation. Bentonite as adsorbent has the potential to remove Zn2+ better than kaolinite.

Opis:
The investigated materials were new biocarbons: FC (Fir Cone), FS (Fir Sawdust), FB (Fir Bark), BS (Birch Sawdust), BB (Birch Bark), AS (Acacia Sawdust), AB (Acacia Bark), OS (Oak Sawdust), OB (Oak Bark), HS (Hornbeam Sawdust)) obtained via pyrolysis and CO2 activation of wood waste (lignocellulosic biomass). In order to study the influence of the carbon precursor on the physicochemical properties of biocarbons there were used the precursors: cones, sawdust, and bark of various tree species. The obtained adsorbents were characterized based on the results, of the N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (CHNS), thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FT-IR (ATR) and the Boehm’s titration method as well as pHpzc (the point of zero charge). The adsorption capacity and the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of ammonia were also studied. The obtained activated biocarbons were characterized by the large specific surface area (515 to 1286 m2/g) and the total pore volume (0.27 to 0.46 cm3/g) as well as the well-developed microporous structure (76 - 90%). The maximum NH3 adsorption capacity of the activated biocarbon was determined to be 2.93 mmol/g (FC (Fir Cone)). These results prove that the lignocellulosic precursors are appropriate for preparation of environmentally friendly and cost-effective biocarbons.

Opis:
A series of new synthetic carbonaceous adsorbents has been prepared via physical and chemical activation of residue of alcoholic fermentation of corn starch. Two different variants of thermal treatment procedure - microwave and conventional heating have been applied for preparing of the activated biocarbons. All the samples under investigation were characterised by elementary analysis, surface area measurements as well as determination of the number of surface functional groups. The electrokinetic properties of examined materials were studied using potentiometric titration and electrophoresis methods, which enabled determination of the surface charge density and zeta potential of activated biocarbon particles. Moreover, sorption properties of the carbonaceous materials towards two organic dyes - methylene blue and malachite green were tested. The final products were activated biocarbons of medium developed surface area ranging from 21 to 879 m2/g, showing acidic character of the surface and various content of surface functional groups. More favourable textural parameters as well as sorption properties toward both organic dyes were revealed by chemically activated samples. The obtained results indicated also considerable effect of adsorbed dye molecules on the structure of electrical double layer formed at the solid/liquid interface.
