Opis:
Hydroxyapatite is used as a matrix for immobilization of protease from Aspergillus oryzae by a process of adsorption. The matrix obtained has the surface area of 26 m2/g and particles in the shape of flakes of diameters no greater than 650 nm. The efficiency of the proposed method was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and by analysis of parameters of the pore structure of matrix and products after immobilization. On the basis of the Bradford method it was found that the greatest amount of enzyme (132 mg/g) was immobilized from a solution of initial enzyme concentration of 7 mg/cm3 after 24 h of the process.

The Chelopech epithermal arsenic bearing high-sulphidation, copper-gold deposit located in Bulgaria is often considered as the richest European gold deposit. Selected physicochemical parameters have been measured at key flotation streams inside the processing plant. Sampling campaign has followed with samples being submitted to chemical and mineral liberation analyses. A quantitative analysis has enabled to link copper flotation response to the type of copper bearing minerals and physiochemical parameters such as redox potential (Eh), dissolved oxygen (DO), EDTA extractable Cu and Fe. Data from the mineral liberation analysis (MLA) have highlighted an important process- relevant information explaining the variable floatability in different particle size ranges. A low chalcopyrite recovery can be linked to the non-sufficient amount of dissolved oxygen inside the copper selective flotation. Given the finely-disseminated copper bearing minerals, copper losses due to particle locking could be suggested as well.

Opis:
A new method of synthesis of polymer biocomposites with lignin using the photopolymerization method has been proposed. Bisphenol A glycerolate (1 glycerol/phenol) diacrylate (BAGDA) was used as a main monomer and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (EHA) as a reactive diluent. Lignin (L) was applied as an eco-filler. The influence of the increasing lignin content (0; 2.5; 5; 10; 20% w/w) on the properties of the obtained biocomposites was investigated. The chemical structure of biomaterials was investigated by the attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR/FT-IR) method while the thermal properties were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG). Their hardness was measured by the Shore D method. Incorporation of the biopolymer into the structure of polymer composites could be a promising alternative to synthetic materials and would contribute to better lignin utilization. The results of the study are of practical importance in prospective applications of biocomposites with lignin.

Opis:
A new method is proposed for obtaining biocomposites based on a combination of silica and lignin precursors. Amorphous silica was produced by two methods: one based on hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (sol–gel method) and the other involving precipitation in a polar medium. Additionally, the commercial silica known under the name of Syloid®244 was used. The silica surface was modified to ensure better affinity of the support to activated lignin. The biocomposites obtained were carefully characterised by determination of their physicochemical and dispersive–morphological properties. Electrokinetic stability of the biocomposites was evaluated on the basis of zeta potential dependence on pH. Thermal stability of the biocomposites and their porous structure parameters (surface area, pore diameter and pore volume) were established. The results indicate that silica/lignin biocomposites are much promising for application in many areas of science and industry.

Opis:
The paper presents some application of barium titanate synthesized by different methods. Barium titanate samples were prepared by four procedures: solid state, mechanochemical as direct synthesis and modification as well as hydrothermal and microwave. The obtained samples were systematically studied using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), potentiometric titration, and quasi-elastic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The values of pHpzc (point of zero charge) and pHIEP (isoelectric point) characteristic of the electrical double layer were determined. The prepared samples were tested as photocatalysts under visible light. As a result, relationship between the conditions of barium titanate synthesis, its physicochemical and electrokinetic parameters, as well as photocatalytic activity under visible light was first established.

Opis:
The interaction of inorganic electrolytes with reagents in the flotation of sulphidic PGM bearing ores is not well explored. It has been shown that specific inorganic electrolytes such as Ca2+ and SO42- can affect the wettability of gangue minerals. These could also hinder the adsorption of collectors onto valuable minerals and concurrently enhance or retard froth stability. This presents a challenge as regards understanding what the overarching or controlling mechanisms of interaction between electrolytes, reagents and minerals are as well as predicting how flotation performance will be affected. This review shows that studies in literature have simplified the question of electrolyte-reagent-mineral interactions and that current approaches have not provided fundamental solutions to the challenge of water quality. It is proposed that the complexity of the flotation system requires an in-depth knowledge of the individual electrolyte-reagent-mineral interactions so as to establish whether there are any dominant or synergistic interactions. Such in-depth knowledge should enable the development of pulp chemistry control measures against water quality variations in flotation.

The investigated materials were new biocarbons: FC (Fir Cone), FS (Fir Sawdust), FB (Fir Bark), BS (Birch Sawdust), BB (Birch Bark), AS (Acacia Sawdust), AB (Acacia Bark), OS (Oak Sawdust), OB (Oak Bark), HS (Hornbeam Sawdust)) obtained via pyrolysis and CO2 activation of wood waste (lignocellulosic biomass). In order to study the influence of the carbon precursor on the physicochemical properties of biocarbons there were used the precursors: cones, sawdust, and bark of various tree species. The obtained adsorbents were characterized based on the results, of the N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (CHNS), thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy FT-IR (ATR) and the Boehm’s titration method as well as pHpzc (the point of zero charge). The adsorption capacity and the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of ammonia were also studied. The obtained activated biocarbons were characterized by the large specific surface area (515 to 1286 m2/g) and the total pore volume (0.27 to 0.46 cm3/g) as well as the well-developed microporous structure (76 - 90%). The maximum NH3 adsorption capacity of the activated biocarbon was determined to be 2.93 mmol/g (FC (Fir Cone)). These results prove that the lignocellulosic precursors are appropriate for preparation of environmentally friendly and cost-effective biocarbons.

The challenge of coal depletion has, among other resolutions, forced countries such as South Africa which depend heavily on coal-generated electricity to consider low-grade coal to meet their energy requirements. The Emalahleni Coalfield has an abundance of low-grade coal in-situ and in discards obtained from the No. 4 seam. This research thus seeks to give a technical assessment of the beneficiation potential of such coal for use in power stations linked to the coalfield. To that end, gravimetric and flotation beneficiation techniques were used, and their demineralisation capacities were assessed using physicochemical and petrographic analysis techniques. The results obtained showed that demineralisation of the coal was possible; with 29.1 and 33.6% ash obtained for an ~50% mass yield from gravimetric and flotation beneficiation techniques, respectively, against a thermal ash content requirement of 25–34% for coal-generated electricity.

Opis:
Functionalized halloysite was used as a support for the immobilization of an enzyme. The surface of halloysite was modified with amino (–NH), epoxy (–C(O)C) and carbonyl (–C=O) groups. Both unmodified and modified forms of the support underwent a comprehensive physicochemical and structural evaluation, including morphological, structural, thermogravimetric and spectroscopic analysis. Aminoacylase from Aspergillus melleus was used as the enzyme in the immobilization process. The process of immobilization by adsorption was performed for 1, 6 and 24 h using different concentrations of enzyme solution (0.5, 1 and 3 mg/cm3). The quantity of aminoacylase loaded onto the support was calculated by the Bradford method. Free and immobilized aminoacylase were used to catalyze the deacetylation of N-acetyl-L-methionine. Additionally, the thermal and chemical stability of the obtained biocatalytic systems were evaluated, as well as the reusability of the immobilized systems. The biocatalytic system with amino groups demonstrated activity above 70% in the pH range 4–9 and 60% in the temperature range 30–70 °C. Aminoacylase immobilized on amino-functionalized halloysite also retains around 50% of its initial activity after five reaction cycles.
