Opis:
The recent preservation treatment of the Romanesque doorway of St. Magdalene at Wrocław seeming to represent an entirely new stage within the series of works aimed at fixating of stone sculptures endangered with disintegration has been preceded by preservation operations in centuries that passed, the most important among them being those undertaken in the 16-th and the 19-th centuries. The works carried out in the period of' Renaissance were remarkable by their quite unusual character, for in 1529 the Abbey Church at Ołbin, then sited w ithin the „extra muros” area of the Wrocław fortificational system, has been totally demolished to prevent hostile forces from making use of it for their protection. In those days one of the church’s magnificent doorways was dismantled in the most careful manner and then mounted again at the south wall of the St. Magdalene parish church, located on the actual* town area, The date of that operation, quite extraordinary in its epoch, namely 1546, was evidenced in the records of the time and also in form of an inscription that could be read on the extrados of the doorway archivolt up to the third quarter of the 19-th century. Both the preservation and removal arose from the unquestionably positive appraisal of sculptural and ornamental values present in the doorway’s arrangement. This, though a rare but not sole viewpoint has led to the appearance of a peculiar phenomenon of revival of the Romanesque forms in architecture and plastic arts in the sixteenth-century Wroclaw. The soil for this phenomenon was prepared by the deep interest shown by the local historiographical circles for the twelfth-century monuments closely related to the early stages of the town’s history. The restoration carried out in 1888 appears to be extremely awkward one as compared with that careful behaviour of the sixteenth-century „conservators”. Due to puristic assumptions adopted in the course of restoration were removed all the Renaissance supplementations and additions resulting from altered functions of the doorway. They have been replaced by the nineteenth-century architect with odd details of the neoromanesque ornamentation. As result of an arbitrary approach to motives not complying with his own fairly inadequate knowledge of the Romanesque sculpture, he removed the lions united with bases of the outer flanking columns. It was exactly then that the inscriptions disappeared from the doorway, both the original Romanesque ones and that dating from the Renaissance period, incised to commemorate the removal operation. Actual works on the Wrocław doorway represent only the first from the planned stages within a complete range of works to be undertaken, As one of the next operations it is expected to obtain the castings that could become an excellent way to reintegrate the components of this remarkable masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture which at present are divided between the St. Magdalene church and the two Wrocław museums.

modernizacja kamienic ulicy Piastowskiej we Wrocławiu
Opis:
Although problems of the renewal enjoy an ever bigger appreciation of the society, in most cases they are, as a rule, limited to historic old-town centres and mainly cover structures of high historic merit. The same holds true of the problem of conservation, modernization and adaptation of housing resources from the 19th century. The problems are dealt with by various research centres in, i.a., Warsaw, Cracow, Gdańsk, Łódź and Wroclaw. The most interesting and worth restoring part of Wroclaw is the complex at Piastowska Street. Its most valuable part with high architectural values comprises 21 houses in eastern and western frontages as well as a small rectangular square jutting out onto the western elevation. Despite formal differences in the façades of individual buildings, on the whole they represent a stylistically uniform entity. War destruction as well as post-war repair works have only slightly affected a technical condition and functional arrangement of the buildings, while the standard of apartments that are found there does not satisfy to-day’s requirements. A similar situation prevails in the entire region of Grunwaldzki Square in Wroclaw. All lived-in apartments have to be renewed and their renewal must be based on thorough studies comprising all aspects of the whole complex phenomenon. Decisions on reconstruction should be related to a strategy of rebuilding which must determine spatial transformation in the entire town; of course, historic and cultural values of individual structures must be taken into consideration. When analyzing in such a way Piastowska street and the 19th century buildings in Wroclaw the conclusion may be reached that its most interesting and worth preserving elements are factors associated mainly with the architectural form. Functional factors, inconsistent with present requirements, decide of the necessity to modernize. Due to limited possibilities of the transformation of old constructional and functional systems, repair and modernization works aimed to restore original technical and aesthetic values and to improve functional values make impossible the achievement in full of the necessary standard. Therefore it seems necessary to renounce traditional forms of repairing and to introduce new bold methods of constructional and building transformations, carried out in a somewhat industrialized way. Actions aimed at a full restoration of the 19th century housing resources should be concentrated on undertakings in the field of organizational, legal and methodological changes in renewal processes.

Opis:
In hitherto conservation activities the problem of the architecture of service ground floors and their windows has been either omitted or treated freely and their architectural value denied. Still, shop windows have always constituted an integral part of tenement houses and as such, ranking with them, deserve to be covered by conservation care. Some of the shops in tenement houses appeared in the Middle Ages but trade, as a rule, was concentrated on market squares and on town markets. It was at that time that attributes of shops came into sight: trade marks, signboards and wooden hoods protecting goods sold in front of shops as well as front entrances to cellars. Along with the development of the town and industry, in the second half of the 18th centruy shops began to appear in tenement houses more and often. After that fact had become legalized in the early 19th century ground floors were adapted for trading functions. At first only the door leading from the street to the shop was pierced and accentuated with a wooden hood or with shelves. At the end of the first half of the 19th century the grilles on the ground floors were removed and replaced with shutters. At the same time shop windows got enlarged at the expense of entrances to cellars and glazed with small panes. In the fifties there appeared case-like shop windows — wooden, self-bearing constructions fixed into the elevation. A development of glass manufacture and construction materials made it possible to glaze bigger surfaces and to enlarge windows of the ground floor. Two storeyed and wooden shop windows, folded-up shutters and markees appeared. In the secession period, architecture of interiors became particularly spectacular and formed a uniform entity with buildings. A department store, which came into existence at the end of the 19th century, adopted and developed shop windows with enlarged window oriffices. A characteristic feature of modernism were big simple shop windows corresponding to the needs of display and satisfying tastes. On the other hand this led to the reconstruction and removal of older types of shop windows. A danger of chaos in architecture of shop windows was noticed in the twenties of this century. Works were undertaken during which a big number of advertisments and signboards was removed from the elevations and ground floors were restored to their old forms and details. At present, in conservation works carried out in Wroclaw on buildings of historic merit one can notice a tendency to enlarge to a maximum extent windows found on ground floors and to remove completely all details. Such methods do not meet the requirements, as indirect stages of the development of shop windows had also their value and now they just disappear at a disquieting rate. It is thus necessary to have a stock-taking and to include this problem into the process of the town revival.

Opis:
The skyline of Wroclaw’s historic centre in which the tower spires played a dominating role has su ffe r ed considerable losses as a result of great battle that was fougth here in spring of 1945. From among a total of nineteen spires shooting prior to 1945 only three medieval spires fu lly survived and the two others preserved in parts. After the World War II was preserved only one spire, namely that on the tower of the Holy Cross Collegiate Church. The restoration of the Old Town panorama although running slowly is being carried out very carefully and systematically. As one of its most important steps is to be considered the rebuilding of spires crowning the towers of the Wroclaw Cathedral. Tending to its completion the restoration of façades requires that also this architectural element be solved. The scarcely available illustrative materials did not until now allow to prepare a satisfactory version of design for reconstruction of its Gothic spire, whereas that later, i.e. coming from the Renaissance period, had never been taken into consideration at all. As the unique and at the same time most important illustrative source presenting the spire on the Cathedral’s northern tower can be handled the panoramic v iew of the town of Wroclaw shown in the „Chronicle” by Hartmann Schedel that was printed in 1493. However, the right interpretation of the above illustration made requirable a series of more comprehensive studies with which was covered an entire group of medieval spires of the Wroclaw towers. In the mid-fourteen century the erection of the most representative buildings of that town was nearly completed. During the early years of that century were erected the spired towers of Dominican Church and of City Hall. The erection of the remaining towers lasted throughout the entire fourteenth century and in some instances prolonged up to the eighties of the fifteenth century. In that particular case of Cathedral Church it has finally been completed in the second half of the 16th century and in addition already in Renaissance forms. Within his present study the author, basing on illu strative sources, data coming from written records and from investigations of relics and traces preserved in situ, has reconstructed the silhouettes of the seven late-Gothic spires, namely those on towers of St. Albert’s, St. Magdalene, St. Elizabeth, St. James’s, St. Matthew’s, of City Hall and of St. John’s Cathedral. This allowed to consider the drawing by Schedel more realistically and to utilize it as a fully reliable historic source. The spires crowning the Wroclaw towers represented a few kinds of pyramidal shapes characteristically situated on the tower terrace surrounded by a stone parapet. These structures having enormous heights, in some instances amounting to 25 and even to 60 m e tres, formed the final stage of the late Gothic architectural features clearly pointing to predominance of form over the then available constructional and material possibilities. During their lifetimes, oscillating between this of 47 and 124 years all they, except l'or that in Holy Cross Church, suffered destruction as a consequence of loosening of their joints and deterioration of material. In light of the present study the reconstructed silhouette of the Cathedral spire erected in 1416 had the shape of a square-based pyramid rising above the tower terrace surrounded by a stone parapet. The dimensions of the spire base corresponded to those of the tower’s interior. The heights of spires varied within a range from 26 (Holy Cross Church) to 59 metres (St. Elizabeth) counting from the level of terrace up to the sphere supporting the cross. The sloping angle of the spire sides, amounting to 82—86°, that is usually observed in the other surveyed Gothic spires of the Wroclaw towers in the case under discussion determined the height of 39 to 40 metres. The only doubt may arise as to the height at which was situated the upper floor gallery and thus as to the size of the latter. Of secondary importance seem to be the details of both gallery and crowning as it is well known that the gallery was decorated with eight gilded balls while the top ended with a gilded sphere and a cross. The previously planned restoration of the destructed in 1759 spires of Wroclaw Cathedral had as its sole objective the rebuilding of Gothic shapes and such plans were continued until the end of the nineteenth century. The designs presented by architect J. Ebers, in 1905, and by E. von Rechenberg, in 1907, did not gain an approval and in 1911 that of II. Hartung was adopted for execution. However, already in the course of its realization it has been partly altered. All the above designs were based on illustration in Schedel’s „Chronicle”, but all they interpreted it in different ways and let be said here — in general, quite unsatisfactorily. At present, in addition to reconstruction of historical forms, it is suggested to shape the spires in modern forms or to leave the towers without spires and with their crowning formed of terraces and parapets only. The reconstruction of the medieval architectural forms is suggested by both possibilities to recover them and the changes in architecture of neo-Gothic façades that have been introduced in the nineteenth and early in the twentieth century. However, with a Gothic spire was covered only the northern tower and at present a pair of spires is required. Thus the building of two spires would be something more than a pure reconstruction. It would be some kind of continuation of medieval idea whose realization has been broken by the style changes. It would not be the first undertaking of that kind in Europe and it seems that several views expressed here are speaking in favour of its starting.

Opis:
