To study the effects of space charge in cyclotrons and synchrocyclotrons the code PHASCOL is developed. A method of large (macro)particles is realized in this code. The complete equations of motion of the charged particle in electromagnetic field of accelerator are integrated taking into account the three-dimensional self-electric field of beam. Two methods were used for the calculation of the beam field: the particle-to-particle method and the particle-in-cell one. The results of calculations which illustrate space-charge effects on the parameters of beam in the process of acceleration are given. Both methods have shown a similar influence of space charge on the beam.

We describe two new methods for the study of close track efficiency. One is based on the study of a correlation function for particles with different masses as a function of their relative momenta in the laboratory reference system. The other method is based on the analysis of artificial events, constructed by merging raw data from separate events. Both methods and the standard Monte Carlo method were applied to data from the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. All three methods provide the same result for close track efficiency with an accuracy sufficient for practical application.

The specific heat of hot hadronic matter is related to particle production yields from experiments done at CERN/RHIC. The mass fluctuation of excited hadrons plays an important role. Connections of the specific heat, mean hadronic mass excited and its fluctuation with properties of baryon and electric charge chemical potentials (value, slope and curvature) are also developed. A possible divergence of the specific heat as 1/(T0 – T)2 is discussed. Some connections with net charge fluctuations are noted.

The shape of Bose-Einstein (or HBT) correlation functions is determined for the case when particles are emitted from a stable source, obtained after convolutions of large number of elementary random processes. The two-particle correlation function is shown to have a stretched exponential shape, characterized by the Lévy index of stability 0 < alfa less-than or equal to 2 and the scale parameter R. The normal, Gaussian shape corresponds to a particular case, when alfa = 2 is selected. The asymmetry parameter of the stable source, beta is shown to be proportional to the angle, measured by the normalized three-particle cumulant correlations.

Abstract Astronomy and nuclear or particle physics are often considered as two opposite extremes, but in fact their common part is not empty and still enlarging. In this brief review we trace their common roots and we look for their common future. We predict that soon they will de facto merge in terms of phenomena being studied, theories used to describe them as well as experimental techniques. We gave several examples, devoting special attention to the "Pi of the Sky" project searching for optical flashes of astrophysical origin.

Correlations between opposite charge particles emitted in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions can be used as a measure of the transverse flow present at the time of the decoupling of the charged pair. The width of the charge balance function in azimuthal angle depends on the transverse velocity and the temperature of the emitting source. Asymmetry in the balance function between in plane and out of plane emission can serve as a probe of the azimuthal asymmetry of the velocity field in the source.

Opis:
Alpha particles emitted from radioactive sources are often measured using a 2pi counting geometry in order to determine the activity with a low deviation. The ratio C2pi/A (counting rate/activity) can, however, deviate from the theoretical value of 0.5 because of backscattering in the backing material, scattering and absorption of alpha particles in the source. The experimental counting rates are, therefore, corrected for these effects (backscattering for all sources, plus self-absorption for sources of non-negligible thickness) to determine the real source activity. However, the corrections needed for situations corresponding to alpha-particle sources in which the radionuclides are not deposited but incrusted in the backing material have not been considered. The aim of the present work was therefore to study the influence that incrustation in the backing can have on the total detection efficiency, and hence on the activity estimated for the source. To this end, we used the Monte Carlo computer code SRIM to model the behaviour of the alpha particles in the backing material.

This contribution presents results of a Particle-in-Cell simulation of ion beam acceleration via the interaction of a petawatt 25 fs laser pulse of high intensity (up to ~1021 W/cm2) with thin hydrocarbon (CH) and erbium hydride (ErH3) targets of equal areal mass density (of 0.6 g/m2). A special attention is paid to the effect that the laser pulse polarization and the material composition of the target have on the maximum ion energies and the number of high energy (>10 MeV) protons. It is shown that both the mean and the maximum ion energies are higher for the linear polarization than for the circular one. A comparison of the maximum proton energies and the total number of protons generated from the CH and ErH3 targets using a linearly polarized beam is presented. For the ErH3 targets the maximum proton energies are higher and they reach 50 MeV for the laser pulse intensity of 1021 W/cm2. The number of protons with energies higher than 10 MeV is an order of magnitude higher for the ErH3 targets than that for the CH targets.

A simple way to visualize event-by-event average pT fluctuations is by assuming that each collision has a different temperature parameter (inverse pT slope) and that the ensemble of events has a temperature distribution about the mean, less than T greater than , with standard deviation sigmaT. PHENIX characterizes the non-random fluctuation of MpT, the event-by-event average pT, by FpT, the fractional difference of the standard deviation of the data from that of a random sample obtained with mixed events. This can be related to the temperature fluctuation: FpT = sigmaMpTdata/sigmaMpTrandom - 1 ~ (less than eta greated than-1)sigmaT 2/ less thanT greated than 2. Combining this with the Gavai et al. [5] and Korus et al. [6] definitions of the specific heat per particle, a simple relationship is obtained: cv/T3 = less than eta greated than/less than Ntot greated than )Ĺ(1/FpT). FpT is measured with a fraction less than eta greated than)Ntot* of the total particles produced, a purely geometrical factor representing the fractional acceptance, ~1/33 in PHENIX. Gavai et al. [5] predict that cv/T3 = 15, which corresponds to FpT ~ 0.20% in PHENIX, which may be accessible by measurements of MpT in the range 0.2 d pT d 0.6 GeV/c. In order to test the Gavai et al. prediction that cv/T3 is reduced in a QGP compared to the ideal gas value (15 compared to 21), precision measurements of FpT in the range 0.20% for 0.2 less-than or equal to pT greater-than or equal to 0.6 GeV/c may be practical.

Measurements of α-particle sources require corrections to the counting rate due to scattering and self- -absorption in the source and the backing material. In this study, we describe a simple procedure to estimate these corrections using the new Monte Carlo code AlfaMC to consider the effects of scattering and self-absorption conjointly, and so to determine the activity of α emitters. The procedure proposed was applied to 235UO2 sources deposited on highly polished platinum backings. In general, the dependence of the efficiency with source thickness was in good agreement with a simple model considering a linear and a hyperbolic behavior for thin and thick sources, respectively, although significant deviations from this model were found for very thin sources. For these very thin sources, the Monte Carlo simulation revealed to be as a required method in the primary calibration of α-particle sources. The efficiency results obtained by simulation with AlfaMC were in agreement with available efficiency data.

Fast electrons created as a result of the laser beam interaction with a solid target penetrate into the target material and initialize processes leading to the generation of the characteristic X-ray K-α radiation. Due to the strong electric field induced at the rear side of a thin target the transmitted electrons are redirected back into the target. These refl uxing electrons increase the K-α radiation yield, as well as the duration of the X-ray pulse and the size of the radiation emitting area. A model describing the electron refl uxing was verifi ed via particle- -in-cell simulations for non-relativistic electron energies. Using this model it was confi rmed that the effect of the electron refluxing on the generated X-ray radiation depends on the target thickness and the target material. A considarable increase of the number of the emitted K-α photons is observed especially for thin targets made of low-Z materials, and for higher hot electron temperatures.
