Opis:
The ability of platinum uptake by hydroponically cultivated plants - Indian mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and Anawa maize (Zea mays L.) - was investigated. The efficiency of the transport of platinum compounds from the roots to above ground organs was estimated. For platinum determination in plant samples, digested in closed system with microwave energy, very sensitive analytical methods were applied - adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV) and mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). For validation of the obtained results the recovery of platinum was examined. The accumulation factors (AF) of platinum: more then 800 and 400 for roots of Indian mustard and Anawa maize, respectively and about 90 and 30 for above ground organs of both species were found.

The ability of hydroponically cultivated Indian mustard plants (Sinapis alba L.) to accumulate platinum was investigated. The Pt-bioaccumulation in leaves, stem and shoots of plants growing for 2 and 4 weeks at Pt-concentration of 50 and 500 ěg/L was compared. The relation between dry and fresh weight was also estimated. Adsorptive stripping voltammetry (AdSV) and mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) were applied for determination of Pt. Increasing Pt-concentration from 50 to 500 ěg/L in the medium causes: (1) reduction of the root tissue hydration level at unchanged modification in aboveground parts of the plants and (2) decrease of the Pt transfer factor (TF) for roots and increase for leaves and stem. Duration of the culture influenced on Pt-accumulation in roots and in aboveground organs of mustard plants. Transfer factor for Pt between 560 and 1600 makes Indian mustard plants one at Pt-hyperaccumulators. Distribution of Pt-bioaccumulation in the plant organs may be useful for biomonitoring of platinum in the environment.

Opis:
A model species of saprophytic fungus, king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii), was cultivated on barley substrate supplied with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2, under well defined conditions. The samples of the collected fruiting bodies were digested and analyzed for total platinum content by means of ICP-MS. The results proved that platinum is not accumulated in the fruitbodies of Pleurotus eryngii for a wide range of Pt concentrations in the culture substrate (100 1000 ppb Pt in 50 ml of water solution added to ca. 450 g of hydrated barley seeds per container). Observable levels of Pt were only found in the fruitbodies obtained from the medium contaminated with 10000 ppb (10 ppm) platinum solution. This demonstrates significant difference in the effectiveness of platinum extraction in fungi and plants, which are capable to accumulate platinum even when supplied at lower concentration (<500 ppb). It also shows different physiological pathways of platinum and other elements which are easily accumulated in the fruitbodies of the same species.

In order to improve scintillation light collection from a thin plastic scintillator, the shape of a light reflector, and a new concept of extraction scintillation light trapped inside the scintillator were investigated. The trapped scintillation light is extracted from the scintillator by cutting the scintillator into two pieces with the edges machined at an angle of 45 centi grade and polished. Considerable improvement of detection efficiency can be achieved when the extracted and the escape scintillation light are collected together. Prototype of such a scintillation probe was constructed and investigated.

A model of detection probe with a plastic scintillator (230 × 105 × 1 mm3) with a ZnS(Ag) layer at the top, and a model with six pancake Geiger-Müller (GM) counters were investigated as alpha particles (Am-241) and beta radiation (Sr-90) contamination detection probes at a dosimetric stand. A detection probe, 166 × 104 mm2 of active area, with a proportional counter was also investigated for comparison. The scintillation probe showed a higher alpha detection efficiency and a comparable beta detection efficiency with respect to the probe containing the proportional counter. The GM probe shoved a higher alpha detection efficiency, and a lower beta detection efficiency than the proportional counter probe. Detection efficiency of the scintillation probe strongly depends on the distance from the photomultiplier tube (PMT) photocathode. Active area of the GM probe of all counters constitutes approximately 50% of its measuring area.

In this paper we report the results of comparative EPR studies on free radicals generated in γ-irradiated powder samples of feather keratin powder and human fingernails. In degassed samples of both materials irradiated at 77 K the major component of EPR spectrum represents sulphur-centred radicals in cysteine residues. It quickly decays after air admission at room temperature while a singlet assigned to semiquinone melanin radicals remains the only one seen. The singlet recorded with fingernails decays slowly at room temperature and might be potentially useful for dose assessment by EPR. The advantages and limitations of fingernails EPR dosimetry are discussed.

During the operation of large industrial installations, a very important task is to maintain the proper technical state. In the event of an emergency, it is vital to locate the place of occurrence as soon as possible. In solving this type of problem, it often helps to apply the methods of measurement associated with ionizing radiation. One of these methods is the gamma scanning. The purpose of this type of measurement is the detection and localization of disturbance of technological processes which may result in incorrect decomposition the flowing medium and workpiece (sediments, congestion) as well as damage to the internal constructions. A particularly: (i) preventive diagnosis – early detection of installation failure; (ii) rationalization of repairs and renovations – to determine the need to take or not to take remedial action; (iii) quick and precise installation inspections – to gain knowledge of the technical condition and technological installations; (iv) indication of worn parts and posing a threat – diagnostics of the technical condition installation; (v) forecasting the useful lifetime of equipment.

LG Gamma Counter is designed for low activity measurement of the radioactive isotope iodine 125I in liquid or solid samples during radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) in small or medium size clinic laboratories. Apart from RIA and IRMA programmed procedures, a measurement of small activity gamma samples is possible. The well scintillator NaI(Tl) is used as radiation detector for the isotope 125 I in the measuring channel, the well dimensions fi being 17 x 38 mm. Gamma Counter was adapted for measuring radioactivity of single samples. The counter is equipped with an automatic system allowing transportation of examined samples to a scintillator well. The gauge is based on an integrated computer which is working under the control of Windows CE and is equipped with special software allowing for setting measurement parameters and communication with an external computer. The measured sample is placed inside the scintillator well either by an automatic sample feeder or manually. The pulses from a photomultiplier tube after amplification and shaping in pulse amplifiers are counted in the window of a single channel analyser by a programmable pulse counter under the control of microprocessor system. The measured count rate is the measure of activity of the assayed sample. Expected count rate error due to unstable operation of amplification is lower than 1%.

Joining of metals with ceramics is very difficult, because properties of these materials are very different. One of the methods of improving mechanical strength of the obtained joints is the introduction of an additional interlayer to the joining area. This paper presents the Zr and Cu-rich layers in C and SiC substrates obtained using the high intensity pulsed plasma beams method. The results of Zr plasma modifications were beneficial and similar to the results obtained in previous works with Ti. The measured contact angles were below 90 centigrade. The results with Cu plasma were unfavourable with contact angles close to 180 centigrade. Apart from the sessile-drop test and to extend the range of analysis, the investigated samples were examined by stereoscopic optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), and Rutherford back scattering (RBS) measurements.

Tungsten is a prime choice for armor material in future nuclear fusion devices. For the realization of fusion, it is necessary to address issues related to the plasma–armor interactions. In this work, several types of tungsten material were studied, i.e. tungsten prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and by water stabilized plasma spraying (WSP) technique. An intended surface porosity was created in the samples to model hydrogen/ helium bubbles. The samples were subjected to a laser heat loading and a radiation loading of deuterium plasma to simulate edge plasma conditions of a nuclear fusion device (power density of 108 W/cm2 and 107 W/cm2, respectively, in the pulse intervals up to 200 ns). Thermally induced changes in the morphology and the damage to the studied surfaces are described. Possible consequences for the fusion device operation are pointed out.

Opis:
This paper presents results of experimental studies of tungsten samples of 99.95% purity, which were irradiated by intense plasma-ion streams. The behaviour of tungsten, and particularly its structural change induced by high plasma loads, is of great importance for fusion technology. The reported measurements were performed within a modifi ed PF-1000U plasma-focus facility operated at the IFPiLM in Warsaw, Poland. The working gas was pure deuterium. In order to determine the main plasma parameters and to study the behaviour of impurities at different instants of the plasma discharge, the optical emission spectroscopy was used. The dependence of plasma parameters on the initial charging voltage (16, 19 and 21 kV) was studied. Detailed optical measurements were performed during interactions of a plasma stream with the tungsten samples placed at the z-axis of the facility, at a distance of 6 cm from the electrode outlets. The recorded spectra showed distinct WI and WII spectral lines. Investigation of a target surface morphology, after its irradiation by intense plasma streams, was performed by means of an optical microscope. The observations revealed that some amounts of the electrodes material (mainly copper) were deposited upon the irradiated sample surface. In all the cases, melted zones were observed upon the irradiated target surface, and in experiments performed at the highest charging voltage there were formed some cracks.

Opis:
In this note experimental studies of tungsten (W) samples irradiated by intense plasma-ion streams are reported. Measurements were performed using the modified plasma focus device DPF-1000U equipped with an axial gas-puffing system. The main diagnostic tool was a Mechelle®900 optical spectrometer. The electron density of a freely propagating plasma stream (i.e., the plasma stream observed without any target inside the vacuum chamber) was estimated on the basis of the half-width of the Dβ spectral line, taking into account the linear Stark effect. For a freely propagating plasma stream the maximum electron density amounted to about 1.3 × 1017 cm–3 and was reached during the maximum plasma compression. The plasma electron density depends on the initial conditions of the experiments. It was thus important to determine first the plasma flow characteristics before attempting any target irradiation. These data were needed for comparison with plasma characteristics after an irradiation of the investigated target. In fact, spectroscopic measurements performed during interactions of plasma streams with the investigated W samples showed many WI and WII spectral lines. The surface erosion was determined from mass losses of the irradiated samples. Changes on the surfaces of the irradiated samples were also investigated with an optical microscope and some sputtering and melting zones were observed.
