The paper is an appendix to gender studies and foreign language teaching. The author presents the interrelationships between gender differences and interaction in language classroom, motivation, achievements and learning strategies of boys and girls. She shows the complexity of these problems when she describes biological and social factors influencing the female and male behaviour and development of the pupils‟ cognitive skills. The assumption that underlies the basis of the text says, that Gender Studies should be considered in various fields of language education.

Opis:
Research on subjective (implicit) theories, similarly to studies on other kinds of beliefs, has a rich tradition in the SLA field. This study presents the results of a survey conducted among 55 Romance Philology stu-dents, containing open-ended questions about different aspects of the language learning process: nature of the language itself, learner's per-sonal attributes facilitating learning, effective learning activities, optimal learning environment, obstacles to learning, role played by other people. Due to the use of a qualitative methodology (open-ended questions), a large variety of different answers was collected. The data were analysed and divided into subject categories, and the answers falling into each category were counted in order to provide an overall view of the group's tendencies. The students' answers mainly confirm that they see learning a language as a long process demanding time and effort. Students' motivation and perseverance prove to be the most important factors whereas features such as intelligence or language aptitude are underestimated.

The author attempts to elabo-rate a list of individual characteristics which facilitate intercommunica-tion (a conversation in which the participants speak different, but re-lated languages). The discussion relates to features presented by se-lected authors in the field of foreign language teaching, the European documents on language education (CEFR and FREPA) and to psycho-linguistics. The final part describes the characteristics which favour in-tercommunication.

This article reports the findings of a qualitative study aimed at investigating how the use of technology-based resources in out-of-class self-study by learners of English affects their level of reflectivity during the process of learning pronunciation. Using as a research tool learners’ diaries submitted on Moodle, the study also explores the value of such diaries in promoting reflection in learners. The findings largely confirmed the considerable role played by technology-based self-study and diary writing in enhancing reflection on learning pronunciation in the participants. These reflections concerned their growing phonological awareness, the use of materials appropriate for pronunciation practice, pronunciation learning strategies, and the affective side of learning. The didactic implications include the need to employ a wide range of technology-based resources for self-study and to encourage learners to keep reflective diaries as part of their pronunciation instruction.

This article illustrates ways of assessing students’ work in the Multimedia master’s seminar and compares the benefits of formative and summative evaluations in this context. During the Multimedia seminar, prospective foreign language teachers and translators create their own multimedia resources, which fill a gap in teaching materials on offer. This allows the students to become specialists in particular areas. This article illustrates ways of assessing students’ work in the Multimedia master’s seminar and compares the benefits of formative and summative evaluations in this context. Students appreciated the importance of formative assessment, recognizing its advantage over summative evaluation. Systematic semi-autonomous work subjected to continual verification proved to be key to the achievement of the desired skills. The results also demonstrated how knowledge of learners’ first and second languages is advantageous, as it allows teachers to more accurately identify and evaluate the difficulties learners face during the acquisition of a third language. These unusual forms of learning by teaching requireconsiderable time and sufficient motivation but notably improve the quality of the learning process.

Opis:
This paper aims to report attitudes of extramural students of the Department of English Studies, University of Wrocław, towards reflection which was introduced into a course of phonetics and into individual practice of pronunciation at home. The article opens with a brief presentation of the concept of reflection, a discussion of its importance in teaching foreign languages (FLs) and an overview of studies on the use of reflection in FL pronunciation teaching. The research design and the techniques used to develop reflection in the students in this study are then described. From the perspective of many learners involved in this research introducing reflection into pronunciation learning had several positive effects: it helped learners set goals and made them aware of effective learning strategies. It also aided them in self-evaluation, in understanding the emotions accompanying the learning of FL pronunciation, and in finding ways of dealing with these. However, it was found that many students were reluctant to have reflection introduced into the learning process. This was mainly due to lack of time and to students’ belief that reflection does not bring any positive results. Finally, the author suggests that the ability to reflect on one’s learning is difficult and dependent on individual predisposition, and that it requires special training.

Emotions are a significant part of our lives. The question of how to communicate emotions is especially important for individuals who, apart from speaking their mother tongue, speak another, either second or foreign language. Research shows that there are differences across languages in terms of the vocabulary of emotion, in the concepts underlying lexical items, in the degree of ease of expressing and describing emotions. Therefore, teaching emotion words is of vital importance for successful communication. One of the factors which may be conducive in eliciting emotions is teaching materials. The purpose of this paper is to address the problem of expressing emotions in a foreign language and suggest the use of linguistic landscape as one of possible sources of input for teach-ing/learning how to perceive and communicate emotions in a foreign language effectively.

Opis:
The aim of our article is to present a study of representations of the French language among Polish high school students. Given the small percentage of pupils learning French as Foreign Language (FFL) in Poland compared to the European average (33.17% of middle school students and 23.0% of high school students in Europe against 3.3% of middle school students and 10.8% of high school students in Poland (Eurydice 2017, GUS 2018), we wondered about the role that impressions relating to French can play in the choice or rejection of FFL by young Poles. Before presenting our research results relating to this problem, we give a brief description of the Polish sociolinguistic and educational context, then we approach the notion of representation / image of languages. Next, we move to the description of the methodological framework of the empirical study that we conducted with Polish-speaking high school students (learners and non-learners in FFL) before presenting the discussion of the results. On the one hand, we examined the impressions relating to French (defined as linguistic, aesthetic, cultural, social and political phenomenon), on the other representations relating to its usefulness.

Opis:
The purpose of the present article to reflect on the possibilities of developing (inter)cultural competence in the context  of glottodidactics by resorting to elements of the source culture, which helps to build (meta)cultural awareness. By analyzing  from a diachronic perspective, together with  some traditional approaches and modern concepts, it is shown that the evolution of glottodidactic models indicates the need to develop a reflective attitude which is built upon the (meta)cultural awareness. This progress, in turn, requires reflection on one’s cultural identity and on the system of one’s own culture which influences the socialization and enculturation processes. Therefore, awareness thus conceptualized can help in determining and understanding the organizational and generative principles of cultures, as well as their functioning and mechanisms.

If reflection is the necessary condition for successful development of all participants of the process of foreign language teaching and learning, as well as for the evolution of the scientific discipline, as we may now call glottodidactics, it is worth looking for all possible examples of it. In the light of this, the author of this article develops the thesis that appropriately designed studies based on biographies may provide rich and useful material for reflection on foreign language learning and teaching. The author also attempts to explain why biographical research is so rarely used in Polish glottodidactic studies and if this state of affairs could be changed.

Opis:
The purpose of the present article is a reflection on the concept of cultural sensitivity as the major element of the (inter)cultural competence presented in The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:Learning, teaching, assessment (Council of Europe, 2001),juxtaposed with the leading paradigm of interculturality in glottodidactics. Whereas this dominant approach often focuses mainly on the question of differences and similarities between cultures, our model allows us to take a look ‘from the inside’ by trying to adopt an attitude of reflectiveness towards cultural standards, among others. After analysing some of the theories concerning developing intercultural sensitivity, such as the sociological model of Bennett or the educational system of Byram, we proceed to justify why we would promote the cultural approach in glottodidactics. We seek to explain how we can specify cultural sensitivity, what elements which encourage this attitude and what would block it. In the last part of the article, we concentrate on the specificity of media discourse in the context of cultural sensitivity and on ways of using authentic mass media materials in the teaching-learning process, providing some examples taken from a pilot study conducted by the authorfor her Master’s thesis.

Each learning is, by its very nature, a situation of conflict as well as cognitive and socio-affective, and its intensity depends on the learner's existential competence (savoir-être) and individual differences. To learn effectively, one must regularly use cognitive tools that constitute the mental equipment of the person. The teacher as a mediator could encourage the learner to better use the tools he or she already has or to develop new tools that are missing for now. The theoretical remarks will be supported by examples from empirical research in which Didactic Dialogue has been used, which is an approach for didactic mediation in the language class.

Self-assessment is a key learning strategy for autonomous language learning, enabling learners to become more aware of the learning process, more ready to take responsibility for their own learning, empowered to make their own changes and to relate learning to individual needs. Also it may help learners to become more aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as of strategies which best suit their particular learning styles and hence to become more reflective and autonomous explorers of language. This paper discusses why self-assessment is important in the toolkit of foreign language learners aged 55+ and presents techniques which help develop self-assessment skills in foreign language learning in this group of learners. One of the most effective self-assessment tools in working with students aged 55+ is The European Language Portfolio.

Attempts at individualisation in teaching appeared in the Polish didactics for foreign languages during the interwar period following the influence of the „new school” concept, as propagated by the reformation movements in American and European education. On the basis of teaching curriculums, practical reports and theoretical contemplations from the years 1919-1939, the article shows the way the then contemporary teachers of foreign languages understood the notion of individualisation, their arguments for its necessity and also the ways the were trying to adapt the new individualising methods of work and forms of organising lessons for their home environment.
