Opis:
The aim of this article is to reflect on the place of translation – understood as one of the forms of mediation activities – in the process of language education. The theoretical content is preceded by a description of the author’s own study conducted among Polish-speaking students learning French in bilingual classes. The aim of the analysis is to show the elements of translation that fit into the assumptions of text mediation which should be paid attention to in the process of language learning and teaching, and how to examine texts mediated by students.

Opis:
This article examines various levels of reflection in language learning and teaching, such as reflecting on one’s own foreign language production, on the language system in general, on one’s learning habits and, in the case of the teacher, on the teaching process. The author hypothesizes that all of these are bound to change some of their characteristics depending on features such as age of the learner and learning context. The article examines reflection in adult students of commercial language courses, trying to point out that all the levels of reflection mentioned are supposed to increase in this group. Age is proved to increase language-focused reflectivity in the subjects, whereas the specific learning context might, for reasons of strong personal motivation, be an asset in encouraging learner reflections on their own learning strategies. These conclusions are nonetheless to be treated with caution, for some specific inhibitors to reflection might appear in this group as well, and further research is needed to confirm this possibility.

Opis:
Fostering learner autonomy is undoubtedly one of the most important goals of foreign language education in Poland, which is evidenced by the fact that it has been included in the current national curriculum, it figures prominently in virtually all available syllabi, and modern coursebooks include numerous elements intended to assist its implementation. It should be made clear, however, that the development of an autonomous approach to language learning is by no means an easy task, the success of which is to a large extent dependent on a particular student. Thus, the aim of the present paper is to demonstrate how autonomy can be effectively promoted in the case of exceptional learners, both such who are successful and such for whom learning a foreign language poses a formidable challenge.

Opis:
As a result of increasing numbers of immigrants, Poland is currently in the process of transition from a predominantly mono-lingual/cultural to multilingual/cultural country. Consequently, a constantly rising number of foreign students is joining Polish schools, who face the need to adapt to new social and institutional settings. In response to this demographic trend, the main aim of this paper is to point to the role of different factors recognised as facilitating in the process of school adaptation in the case of immigrant students in the Polish educational system. The research participants, 23 Polish teachers of English, in semi-structured interviews, described over 60 cases of multilingual children they used to work with. Out of these, the accounts describing primary school learners who had adapted well to new educational environments were selected for qualitative analysis, conducted with the aid of NVivo Software. In this case study, the stories of four successful adaptations have been selected to illustrate the importance of factors recognised in the analysis as those which favourably assist the process of school adjustment. These include: (1) the individual dispositions of the newcomer, (2) the behaviours of their classmates, (3) the supportive actions of teachers, (4) parents’ engagement and assistance.

Opis:
Learners’ perceptions of teacher assessment practices shape a uniqueclassroom assessment environment that affects learners’ willingness to engage in a task and motivation to learn (McMillan & Workman, 1998). Still, there has been limited research on learners’ perceptions of classroom and high-stakes assessment. This article outlines a study exploring adolescent learners’ perceptions of the speaking and writing assessment they experience in the English classroom. The Critical Incident Technique (CIT) was used to examine both positive and negative instances of oral and written assessment. During oral interviews, the learners reported and elaborated on the assessment experiences they personally perceived as particularly important, memorable and influential. The transcriptions of the interviews were content analysed in order to identify the properties of oral and written assessment that appeared salient to adolescent learners. The study indicates that the participants held predominantly positive views of oral and written assessment, emphasising such aspects as authenticity of assessment, freedom of expression and fair grading. It is worrying, however, that learners are not always provided with clearly articulated assessment criteria and that oral assessment is visibly neglected in the classroom.

Opis:
Adapting foreign language teaching to the requirements of studentswith special educational needs requires prior diagnosis of the developmental potential of the pupils concerned. Because of the educational and rehabilitative character of foreign language learning in studentswith language and speech deficiencies, the diagnosis addresses the possibilities of using foreign language learning in developing general and linguistic competencies in both languages (native and foreign). The article presents the aims of diagnosing linguistic communicative competencies in the context of foreign language teaching. The differences between speech diagnosis and diagnosis performed for the needs of foreign language teaching are discussed, based on cases of pupils with deficiencies in their native language (Polish). The evaluation of the students’ competencies involved reformulation as an instrument of linguistic diagnosis; learning strategies were also considered in the assessment.

Opis:
Although language learning strategy research has been going on for almost forty years and has provided both theorists and practitioners with an abundant body of knowledge on the subject, there are still areas that need further investigation. One such area is the use of strategies in language skills development, with the skill of writing being singled out as deserving special attention. It is suggested that in order to better understand the processes involved, we need more information concerning the development of the skill by learners, as well as more data revealing the effects of strategy based instruction, especially with reference to children and adolescents in different foreign language learning contexts.   Hence, this article makes an attempt to contribute to the ongoing discussion by focusing on a special group of learners – poor language learners, at a risk of educational failure – who are learning a foreign language (English) in the context of junior high school. The article consists of two parts: its theoretical sections focus on some issues related to poor language learners, with emphasis on factors impacting their school problems in general and learning of the writing skill in particular. Then, based on the literature review, some research findings concerning writing strategies and the effects of strategic training are discussed. The second part presents and comments on the data obtained during the course of an informal study carried out in a junior high school within the framework of an educational project which was remedial in character.
