Opis:
Construction projects are more often than not plagued by poor performances such as delays, cost overrun, low productivity, construction wastes and compromised quality. Amongst the critical contributory factors of poor project performances, is the ineffectiveness of materials management occurring in the construction sites. Indeed, materials management is a very important component for construction projects. However, there are only limited numbers of research available regarding this topic. Thus, this research focuses its study on materials management, specifically in identifying the influential factors that affect materials management in the construction project activities. Literatures from books, journal articles and conference papers related to poor project performances and materials management have been reviewed. Consequently, this study sorted the salient influential factors and categorized them based on their specific group. Out of 47 factors identified, they are classified into 8 groups. They are (1) site condition; (2) planning and handling on site; (3) management; (4) materials; (5) supplier and manufacturer default; (6) transportation; (7) contractual; and (8) governmental interferences. In conclusion, this study contends that by identifying the influential factors affecting materials management, it will help construction players to avoid the occurrence of those factors and will minimize the negative impacts on the overall performance of construction projects. Hence, the handling-over of project will be according to schedule and not delayed by materials mismanagement.

Opis:
Eastern European companies have experienced various and radical transformations, as result of the economic crises and turbulences, which exposed structural weaknesses. In the meantime, long-term challenges - such as globalization, shift of power centers from the national level to international structures or scarcity of resources - intensify. Given this context, it is mandatory for companies to develop strategies aiming at being competitive. The paper aims to propose an exploratory analysis regarding a Swedish-Finnish owned company active in Romania - that was capable to build a strategic vision of its future, to define a plan for change and to implement the necessary measures for the project success. The author has conducted a study and developed a case along a project aiming at continuous improvement (Kaizen) in this company, emphasizing its main results. In order to analyze the project of implementing Kaizen methodology, the research initiative consisted both of primary and secondary research. The paper analyzes the project from the point of view of economic situation of the company and environment, time constraints, budget limitations, technical level/quality performance and risks. The central finding is that concept-oriented projects run by an advanced-country company could succeed in a less economically developed and culturally different country - even in turbulent periods and not even in highly dynamic and technologically advanced industries - if the top management is strongly committed and management team completely involved. The paper concludes with study results, as well as some lessons learnt and managerial implications - useful for future similar projects either within the company under debate or by other organizations in similar circumstances.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to present an exemplary system for recording and analyzing quality costs and to demonstrate that it is helpful in planning and assessing the effectiveness of continuous improvement processes at the operational and strategic level. Various approaches to defining quality costs are described, followed by indicators for assessing effectiveness and tools to collect data on the values of individual groups of quality costs and compare them with financial indicators. The practical part presents a case study on the quality cost accounting system in a medical company and the possibility of using quality cost accounting to plan and evaluate continuous improvement processes and make managerial decisions.

Opis:
This study presents a customized root cause analysis approach to investigate the reasons, provide improvements measures for the cost overruns, and schedule slippage in papermachine-building projects. The proposed approach is an analytical-survey approach that uses both actual technical data and experts’ opinions. Various analysis tools are embedded in the approach including: data collection and clustering, interviews with experts, 5-Whys, Pareto charts, cause and effect diagram, and critical ratio control charts. The approach was implemented on seven projects obtained from a leading international paper machine supplier. As a result, it was found that the main causes behind cost and schedule deviations are products’ related; including technical accidents in the Press section, damaged parts, design issues, optimization of the machine and missing parts. Based on the results, prevention measures were perceived.
