Opis:
The aim of the paper is to show how to solve contemporary nationalistic issues, known also as „ethnophiletism”, in Orthodox way. Although nationalism is not the ecclesiological problem, its ideas affect the Church, too. The aim of this study is to identify problems, which arising from these nationalistic ideas touch the Church, and to present some ways of solving them. This paper indicates the difference between Orthodox and secular understanding of the term „nation”. The Church attitude to nationality and related issues is not based on a secularism, but it takes as a foundation Christ’s teachings . The paper indicates the problematical questions, in which the clash between the Church teaching and the nationalistic ideas takes place. Church problems based on the ethnic and nationalistic ideas are especially emphasized in this article. Ethnic problems in the Church are presented as an ecclesiological distortion and redefinition of Christian ideals, from which the issue of ethnophiletism was discussed more detailed. The paper shows the problems and also indicates possible solutions in the spirit of the Orthodox Church teaching. Discussing questions of the universal councils decisions and returning to the original ecclesial standards, this paper points out the necessity of eliminating dangerous ideas inside the Church.

Opis:
The theme of a child in Christian art appears from the very beginning of its existence. Usually, it carries a meanings related to the innocence, that belongs to children, a vocation to a new, unknown Life. Works of art remind believers of the need to conform their souls to a child’s ones in order to fulfill this vocation (Mark 10: 13–16). In the context of the Orthodox Christology depiction of the Savior as a child always expresses faith in the true Incarnation of the Logos. Faith in God’s adoption of entire human nature for its divinization and salvation. With the help of art, the Orthodox Church presents the Mysteries in which Almighty God becomes a helpless child while maintaining his divine nature. Church, using artistic medias, indicates a tight connection between Incarnation of Christ and His redeeming Resurrection presented also in Eucharist.

Opis:
The article shows the attitude the Cossacks presented on two Kiev synods in 1628 and 1629. Their strong position during the Synod of Kiev in 1628 led Meleciusz Smotrycki to give up his efforts not only to reconcile the Orthodox and Orthodox priests, but above all to persuade the latter to accept union. The Cossacks, opposing the presence of the followers of the Orthodox Church at the synod of Lwów, undoubtedly expressed their uncompromising stance on the issue of the Uniate-Orthodox reconciliation. The attitude of the Cossacks at the synods of Kiev in 1628–1629 also provides us with another argument for her independent actions in the religious field, which should be treated as a clear testimony of the importance of matters of faith in her activities. Just like during the Kiev events from the beginning of 1625, the Cossacks’ activity was at odds with the attitude of the then authorities of the Orthodox Church, which undoubtedly were both Job Borecki and Piotr Mohyła. The undeniable fact of the Zaporozhians’ influence on the change of their initially positive attitude towards the idea of re-entering the union with the Uniate Church, makes them increasingly self-supporting in defending the rights, privileges and, above all, the sovereignty of the Orthodox Church regardless of the weaknesses of its spiritual leaders.

Byzantine temples were richly equipped with polychromes, mosaics and frescoes, constituting a very carefully thought-out ideological complement to the church. In each artistic era, they were an expression of their times. In the modern era, sometimes there were polychromes referring to Byzantine works or – in Uniate churches – corresponding to the spirit of the era, as in the church in Czyże in Podlasie. In the mid-twentieth century, Adam Stalony-Dobrzański, an artist associated with Krakow, undertook the creation of new polychromes in new Orthodox churches in Podlasie, corresponding to the challenges of contemporary art. The content of the article is, above all, an attempt to introduce this masterpiece in the first place.

Grafitti, i.e. engraved inscriptions left at different times in public places, often unfortunately on objects of great significance for world culture and heritage, till now constitute a somewhat marginalized problem, possibly treated as meaningless acts of vandalism of different periods. A brief review of grafitti teams made at different times and in various orthodox temples of Central and Eastern Europe (Novgorod, Kiev, Polotsk, Grodno) was carried out with an attempt to pre-classify them and draw conclusions of a more general nature, as well as in relation to intriguing monuments from Poland (Krakow, Sandomierz, Wislica, Lublin). Particularly intriguing is the presence in the orthodox paintings of Latin inscriptions, recorded in different eras for various reasons, primarily those related to modern times, i.e. in the 17th-18th centuries. The intensification of the application of Latin-Polish inscriptions in seventeenth-century temples is parallel to the mass occurrence of Cyrillic inscriptions in orthodox churches in the XI–XII century, which could have been the result of the particularly lush development of the literary culture of both environments in the indicated eras. Separate attention was devoted to attempts to blur the inscriptions, especially in the case of Lublin paintings, sometimes crucial for reading the foundation’s circumstances, and the these actions on the inscriptions arouse constant emotions due to attributing political motives to them.

The article is an analysis of the theological program contained in the polychromy and stained glass windows of two Orthodox churches in Podlasie – Gródek and Michałowo, made in the 1950s by Adam StalonyDobrzański (partly with the participation of Jerzy Nowosielski). At the center of the program is soteriology, expressed through Eucharistic, Mariological and apostolic themes. The extraordinary significance of Stalony Dobrzański’s artistic achievements lies in the close combination of ideas, iconography and the written word, as well as the best traditions of the Christian East and West, including the folk tradition.

Opis:
Created in the years 1954–1955, polychrome of the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Michałowo is important work of Orthodox art. The interior decoration, both in design and execution, is an individual and complete work of Adam Stalony-Dobrzański. It reveals the most important features of his style, which crystallized in the 50’s. The paintings are filled with quotes from medieval traditions, both Byzantine and Gothic. Adam Stalony-Dobrzański introduced new interpretative qualities and made a synthesis of two traditions – the East and the West, unprecedented in contemporary sacred painting, translated into the language of modernity, and illustrated in his own, innovative way. Along the ornamental stripes of the ornamental decoration, the artist placed hand-painted sequences of letters forming inscriptions – quotations from the Holy Bible, explaining the meaning of figural representations. They complement, explain and develop the ideological meanings shown in the form of an image. The iconographic arrangement of the wall decorations, which is a transformation of the canon formed after iconoclasm in the spaces of cross-domed temples, was adapted to the architecture of the interior of the wooden church, creating a homogeneous and coherent ideological program.

Prologue
Opis:
Muscovite metropolitan Makarius (1542-1563) began a new period in the history of canonisation. Until the time of Makarius’ councils in the Russian Orthodox Church there were 22 universally venerated national saints. During the two local councils in 1547 and 1549 the cult of other 39 saints was established. Almost all the canonised saints were already venerated in churches of separate dioceses or monasteries. The councils only confirmed the local veneration or made that cult universal for all Russia. The councils ultimately formulated the rite of canonisation. The lives of the newly canonised saints were introduced into the hagiographical literature. When Makarius was still the archbishop of Novgorod, he initiated collecting information about the Russian saints and writing their services, their lives or new versions of their lives. In Prologue – a calendar collection of short lives of the saints and some teachings – only short versions of the new saints’ lives were introduced. Only 8 manuscript copies of Prologue containing those lives exist now. Therefore the Makarius’ hagiographical body was introduced into a few copies of the Simple Prologue. The lives of the new saints were equally introduced into autumn and spring volume of the Prologue. The contemporarily existing copies allow to distinguish Makarius’ variant of Pskov version and Makarius’ variant of the wide version. The materials included in the Prologue are connected not only with the councils of 1547 and 1549, but also more widely with the activity undertaken by metropolitan Makarius in order to systematise the hagiographical literature. Existence of the copies of Makarius’ variant of the wide version of the Simple Prologue on the territory of the Commonwealth proves the mutual influence of the religious literature and of the close links between the countries of the cultural acreage of Slavia orthodoxa.

Srbljak is a collection of hymns and services dedicated to Serbian saints of the Orthodox Church. In particular regard to the texts of the services of the Serbian saint women: Angelina (30 VII), Anastasia Nemanic (22 VI), Eughenia – Euphrosinia (tsarina Militsa; 19 VII) and Zlata of Meghlen (13 X) one can observe the changes of the norms applied to the liturgical language in Serbia. The service of St Angelina, written around 1520 or 1530, was included in the Rakovatch manuscript of Srbljak (1714) edited in the Serbian version of Church Slavonic. The same book printed in 1761 in Rimnik contained already the texts in the Russian version of Church Slavonic as did also the Belgrade edition of the Srbljak edited in 1861. It was only in 1986 that the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church printed Srbljak in Serbian Slavonic, allowing the introduction of seven services in modern Serbian (including four services translated from Romanian). The last edition of Srbljak shows general tendencies in contemporary Serbia to use more and more often the modern Serbian as the liturgical language.
