The article is an attempt at contemporary interpretation of Antonina Kłoskowska’s theory of culture. The Author starts with a brief summary of her concept and follows with his analysis and elaboration on a few interesting issues which are the most inter- esting in his opinion. They include: national culture and the culture of a national society (i.e. a society, the members of which regard themselves also as members of a national community, an essence of integrative functions of national culture and conciliative functions of artistic heritage.

Opis:
The phenomenon of publication, in the same year, of two books having identical titles, is enough to study the theory presented therein. Both books feature the notion of culture, which was broadly elaborated by both authors: Antonina Kłoskowska and Raymond Williams already in their earlier analyses. It turns out, however, that no matter the title of a book interesting to us, culture is tackled differently in both of them. Williams seems to keep using anthropological definition of culture, while Kłoskowska suggests sociological approach. A reflection on culture by the English academic has shaped the character of British cultural studies and their subsequent follow-ups around the world. A question arises, to what extent the sociological approach by Kłoskowska may give impetus to cultural research in Poland, especially when symbolic culture appears beyond the principle of autotelism.

Opis:
In the last period of her professional career, Antonina Kłoskowska focused on issues related to national culture and nation itself, which is evident e.g. in her publication National Cultures at the Grass-Root Level. The article presents Kłoskowska’s main agruments concerning the notion of “national culture”. The author regarded this specific type of culture as one that could be characterized as symbolic, compound and coherent in the syntagmatic sense. Kłoskowska points out that, in order to be recognized as a member of a national community, it is necessary to acquire and refer to the canonical resources of its culture. In the second part of the article some of the findings of contemporary Polish researchers are laid out, which correspond or directly relate to some of Kłoskowska’s ideas. A comparison and analysis of their views leads to a conclusion that their diversification does not generally mean that they are completely distant in their judgments but rather that various aspects are stressed in different ways. This attests, however, to the fact that the authors belonged to diverse intellectual formations.

This article considers the relation between popular culture and its subcultures, which are increasingly being formed into consumer styles and globally disseminated by mass media. The authors consider the history of 20th-century youth subcultures, while also noting the main theoretical trends connected with their research. They concentrate in particular on Soviet and post-Soviet Russian subcultures, which reflect many of the processes - such as globalization, hybridization, and commercialization - occurring in culture at the turn of the 20th to 21st century. The idea of a post-subculture is applied to opposing phenomena in today’s subculture world, including youth subcultures of early 21st-century popular culture.

Opis:
The author characterizes the spread of nowist culture as a global phenomenon consisting in the compression of the time frame and the emergence of an extended present absorbing the past and the future into the compact time of global society. These results of the impact of technological development, the spread of communication technologies, new media, consumption culture, the market, and advertising have a negative influence on the life of the individual, the permanency of culture, and the transmission of knowledge. The author claims that we must therefore discover anew the value of permanency. Local factors have a modifying influence on global processes. In Polish society these are historically conditioned elements of the presentist culture (the communist heritage, the domination of peasant culture, the weakness of urban culture, Catholic culture) and the effects of the systemic transformation. When time was discovered to be an economically measurable value, its place came to be occupied by work. People higher on the economic ladder are characterized by a deficit of time, in contrast to lower income groups, who rather suffer from an excess of time. The author emphasizes that time could become a source of social inequalities in nowist culture.

The Author ponders changes in the perception of the institution of museum, which he treats as a medium. He considers its constitutive features: spatiality and transfer function. In his opinion, in the contemporary world of cultural convergence the museums, once limited with institutional perspective, targeted their attention at the needs and experiences of a viewer — they have become a piece of land which may be developed by people according to their own group needs.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that there is a strong correlation between the concept of human nature and culturally dominant strategies for constructing the “Other” in European culture. This relationship results in specific challenges for the social anthropologist, particularly in connection with efforts to overcome common knowledge by unveiling and disclosing the real structure of social processes. The sphere of biopolitics has shown that citizens can be stimulated by fear to act. Yet fear has a moral dimension, and thus an engaged anthropology is now needed in order to combat social injustice more actively.

Opis:
The Wrestler is a film with many plot lines and is worthy of comprehensive analysis. Deep layers of hidden meaning are gradually uncovered for the audience as the hero’s perspective is adopted and life is seen through that prism. The author analyses the film in reference to popular culture and consumption. He seeks signs connected to patterns of consumer culture and displays the mechanisms by which the standardization of life, global uniformity and the terror of corporeality subjugate the individual. Finally, he looks at Aronofsky’s film from the perspective of the protagonist’s wanderings, of rites of passage, ritual process and the folk spectacle, which is a sort of game. The wrestler of the title role, played with bravura by Mickey Rourke, is in essence a tragic hero. We watch as he remembers his past fame, attempts to avoid further downfall, and finally, struggles for the right freely to choose his own fate (even though that choice means death) and to liberate himself from the shackles of the normative- -consumer cultural system. Aronofsky’s film belongs to the narrative tradition that tackles the great mythological subjects, such as the battle between good and evil, or between coercion and freedom.

Opis:
The author defines intellectual culture as a tendency to base decisions on objective analyses or the habit of investigating issues analytically. In the broader sense, intellectual culture may be considered to be the way the collective reacts to phenomena that appear in the real world. A high level of intellectual culture, in the author’s opinion, is shown by a modern form of thinking manifested in the ability to make use of abstracts and to take into account alternative systems of constructing opinions. On the basis of selected analyses of Polish scholars the author advances the hypothesis that Poland has failed to form proper institutional mechanisms favoring rational analysis in public life. The author demonstrates that this is the result of many factors, such as the long-lasting model of Sarmatian customs (including its providentialism), the strong and lasting influence of a radical form of romanticism, and also the nugatory influence of Enlightenment and positivist models. These factors have been accompanied by the unsuitability of educational and scholarly institutions, the delayed development of modern forms of economics, which force the use of rational calculations, and a structure of society that does not favor exchanges of ideas and deliberation.

Opis:
This article concerns uncertainty, which is considered by many social theorists (for instance, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck, Daniel Bell, Eric Hobsbawm) to be a characteristic trait of the contemporary world. Uncertainty is produced by rapid, multidimensional changes in the conditions around us—by their instability and unpredictability—and by a lack of future vision. Continual change becomes an element of everyday life. Culture understood as a collection of permanent meanings, norms, and values loses its ordering function—it no longer serves to elucidate the world; the past does not provide helpful examples. There is an expansion of mutability, a multiplicity of possible choices, and an excess of information—which paradoxically, like its lack in an isolated society, is a cause of uncertainty, fear, and presentist thinking. In Polish society, these phenomena are strengthened by tradition and the sense of economic insecurity accompanying the systemic transformation.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest ukazanie głębszego sensu polityki kulturalnej postrzeganej często jako zestaw działań zarządczych. W takim ujęciu polityka kulturalna staję się bowiem w istocie obszarem depolityzacji. Założeniem tekstu jest odtworzenie sensu polityki kulturalnej na podstawie narracji dotyczących postrzegania znaczenia społecznego – realizowanej przez zróżnicowane podmioty – działalności społecznej objętej tą polityką. Materiał stanowiący podstawę do wyodrębnienia ujęć działalności kulturalnej stanowiły swobodne wywiady indywidualne z współtwórcami polityki kulturalnej. Inspiracji do uporządkowania ujęć funkcjonalności kultury dostarcza teoria działań komunikacyjnych Jürgena Habermasa, szczególnie te fragmenty teorii, które nawiązują do myśli Maxa Webera dotyczącej racjonalności działań społecznych. W artykule ukazany zostaje dualny charakter racjonalności działań kulturalnych – rozpowszechnione dotychczas ujęcie zawężone (instrumentalne) oraz wyłaniające się z materiału ujęcie rozszerzone (komunikacyjne).
The paper aims to show the relationships between the sphere of culture and its setting. They can be outlined by reconstructing the sense attributed to cultural activities by the research respondents. The material constituting the basis for identifying how the rationality of cultural activities is grasped was provided by in-depth interviews with people involved in cultural policymaking and analysis of documents they referred to. Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action, which draws on Max Weber’s take on the rationality of social action, provides inspiration for organising conceptualisations of the functionality of culture. This paper seeks to address the dual nature of the rationality of cultural activities, as instrumental and communicative. The potential sense of such a grasp of cultural activities is also indicated from a cultural policy perspective. An instrumentalist approach to culture, referring to expert discourse, can serve to resolve the crisis of legitimacy characteristic of cultural policy.

Holiday and celebratory traditions have a long but complicated history in Poland. The liberty to express joy at a holiday time has often been stifled by prohibitions on observing certain anniversaries or holidays and the necessity of ceremoniously celebrating others. A common element of private, as well as public, celebrations is the feast-commensalism. Like other phenomena, holiday-making is governed by a set of social norms and patterns, which in this case concern the preparation and consumption of meals. In human history, the forms of commensalism have undergone significant transformation. We can find many examples in literature, and anthropologists and sociologists are also engaged in analysing the phenomena. In this text, we have taken Silesia as the empirical point of reference. Silesia is a region where traditional culinary culture is intertwined with contemporary cuisine, but where tradition comes out decidedly on top. There too, daily commensalism is clearly distinguished from holiday commensalism, which has its own atmosphere and magic.

The news of Michael Jackson’s death on 25 June 2009, a few days before a concert tour, circled the world and began an avalanche of stories about his life in the media. The author concentrates on those stories in which the musician is presented as a mythic hero. He uses Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth in his analyses and begins by describing its basic points. Then he portrays Jackson’s funeral, which was transmitted worldwide, as a media event and refers in this context to the ideas of Daniel Dayan and Elihu Katz. He analyzes the funeral orations in terms of their representativeness of a certain type of narrative, i.e., they present Jackson as a hero changing the shape of the world by his actions. In the end, the author points to the need for further reflection on tales of mythic heroes in contemporary popular culture.

In this article, the author presents cultural theories of emotion and the concept of emotional culture’ as a tool of sociological analysis. The cultural perspective, in her opinion, is worthy of sociologists’ particular attention; it brings factors of a strictly social nature to the analysis of emotion, for instance, the impact of changes in social organization on the presence of emotions in social life. The idea of emotional culture is essential for this perspective. In the proposed meaning, it refers to the ordering of the ‘emotionality’ of a given collective at the supra-individual level. It comprises scenes for the appearance of emotions, manners of expressing emotions, emotional norms, ideas about emotions, the values attached to emotions, and the language of describing emotional experiences. Analyses from the cultural perspective connect changes in expression and emotional norms with changes in social organization, as is shown through the examples of Norbert Elias’s and Cas Wouters’s work.
