Opis:
The article attempts to prove that Darwinism in popular culture plays a role of a theory of everything. Bestselling authors of popular science such as Edward O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins and Bill Bryson have acquainted general public with the theory of evolution, and its newest facet — the Modern Synthesis. Darwinian paradigms, as defined by Thomas Kuhn, are also used in popular books on cosmology, sociobiology, psychology, and religious studies. Moreover, the Darwinian grand narrative of evolutional history shapes the way in which contemporary mass culture presents the history of our planet in numerous educational TV series. Last but not least, Charles Darwin himself has recently become a popular icon and the story of his life is remade in a growing number of fiction and non-fiction books and movies.

Opis:
This article considers the relation between popular culture and its subcultures, which are increasingly being formed into consumer styles and globally disseminated by mass media. The authors consider the history of 20th-century youth subcultures, while also noting the main theoretical trends connected with their research. They concentrate in particular on Soviet and post-Soviet Russian subcultures, which reflect many of the processes - such as globalization, hybridization, and commercialization - occurring in culture at the turn of the 20th to 21st century. The idea of a post-subculture is applied to opposing phenomena in today’s subculture world, including youth subcultures of early 21st-century popular culture.

Opis:
The news of Michael Jackson’s death on 25 June 2009, a few days before a concert tour, circled the world and began an avalanche of stories about his life in the media. The author concentrates on those stories in which the musician is presented as a mythic hero. He uses Joseph Campbell’s idea of the monomyth in his analyses and begins by describing its basic points. Then he portrays Jackson’s funeral, which was transmitted worldwide, as a media event and refers in this context to the ideas of Daniel Dayan and Elihu Katz. He analyzes the funeral orations in terms of their representativeness of a certain type of narrative, i.e., they present Jackson as a hero changing the shape of the world by his actions. In the end, the author points to the need for further reflection on tales of mythic heroes in contemporary popular culture.

Opis:
The author analyses the 2009 documentary film Bigger, Stronger, Faster, which investigates the nature of American pop culture and sports. Writing from the perspective of cultural anthropology and sociology, he considers how ideas about the body and physicality are programmed by popular media culture and famous sports figures and celebrities, who are treated as models of masculinity and mass media heroes. He also raises the issue of the influence of illegal pharmaceutical doping on contemporary American sports. All these subjects serve to describe the form and functioning of America’s contemporary collective identity and the connection between the authorities, television, sports entertainment, and politics. The United States described in the documentary is a real and existing utopia, which Americans and other people have dreamt and still dream about, and which everyone believes in—not only the recipients of popular media culture and sports entertainment.

Opis:
The Wrestler is a film with many plot lines and is worthy of comprehensive analysis. Deep layers of hidden meaning are gradually uncovered for the audience as the hero’s perspective is adopted and life is seen through that prism. The author analyses the film in reference to popular culture and consumption. He seeks signs connected to patterns of consumer culture and displays the mechanisms by which the standardization of life, global uniformity and the terror of corporeality subjugate the individual. Finally, he looks at Aronofsky’s film from the perspective of the protagonist’s wanderings, of rites of passage, ritual process and the folk spectacle, which is a sort of game. The wrestler of the title role, played with bravura by Mickey Rourke, is in essence a tragic hero. We watch as he remembers his past fame, attempts to avoid further downfall, and finally, struggles for the right freely to choose his own fate (even though that choice means death) and to liberate himself from the shackles of the normative- -consumer cultural system. Aronofsky’s film belongs to the narrative tradition that tackles the great mythological subjects, such as the battle between good and evil, or between coercion and freedom.

Opis:
This essay was envisaged as a dialogue with Paweł Ciołkiewicz, author of the book Moje komiksy, Vol. 1, Od Tajfuna do Supermana [My Comics, Vol. 1, From Typhoon to Superman] (2019), who has for years been fascinated by the phenomenon of comics and made them the subject of scholarly reflection. When analyzing the history and contemporaneity of the comic book, he uses concepts from many fields familiar to sociologists, such as cultural anthropology, philosophy, history, psychology, and religious studies. In discussion with Ciołkiewicz, the author of the article addresses the following topics: (1) comics in the grid of academic concepts; (2) comics as an illustration of the fate of popular culture in the Polish People’s Republic and the USA; and (3) the comic book as myth. In summary, he recalls Ciołkiewicz’s statement that for him comics are not only an object to be studied but also an instrument for breaking through the veil of obviousness.
