Opis:
The paper addresses the generic topological network design problem and considers the use of various heuristic algorithms for solving the problem. The target of the optimisation is to determine a network structure and demand allocation pattern that would minimise the cost of the network, which is given by fixed installation costs of nodes and links and variable link capacity costs described bv linear or concave functions. Input data for the optimisation consists of a list of potential node and link locations and their costs and a set of demands defined between the nodes. Since the problem is known to be NP-hard. The use of specialised heuristic algorithms is proposed. The presented approaches encompass original ideas as well as selected methods described in literature and their enhancements. The algorithms are based on the following ideas and methods: shifting of individual flows, local and global restoration of flows from chosen links or nodes, Yaged algorithm for finding local minima, Minoux greedy algorithm, simulated allocation and genetic algorithms. Efficiency of each of the proposed methods is tested on a set of numerical examples.

An important problem one needs to deal with in a Voice over IP system is server overload. One way for preventing such problems is to rely on prediction techniques for the incoming traffic, namely as to proactively scale the available resources. Anticipating the computational load induced on processors by incoming requests can be used to optimize load distribution and resource allocation. In this study, the authors look at how the user profiles, peak hours or call patterns are shaped for a real system and, in a second step, at constructing a model that is capable of predicting trends.

This paper presents the results of a comparative study of network routing approaches. Recent advances in the field suggest that swarm intelligence may offer a robust, high quality solution. The overall aim of the study was to develop a framework to facilitate the empirical evaluation of a swarm intelligence routing approach compared to a conventional static and dynamic routing approach. This paper presents a framework for the simulation of computer networks, collection of performance statistics, generation and reuse of network topologies and traffic patterns.

Opis:
In this paper a new approach to evolutionary controlled creation of electronic circuit connection topology is proposed. Microwave circuits consisting of a tree like connection of ideal transmission lines are considered. Assuming that a reasonable number of transmission lines in a tree network ranges from 10 to 100, the number of connection combinations is immense. From the engineering practice comes the hypothesis that any device can be decomposed into some functional building blocks consisting of one to dozen transmission lines. The variety of linking combinations in a tree with a limited depth is confined to hundreds or thousands of shapes. Therefore we can decrease the dimensionality of research space, applying evolution to building blocks only. Evolutionary algorithm (EA) which processes simultaneously the population of λ functional blocks and population of ž circuits is proposed. A μ, λ selection scheme with tournament together with specific encoding of solutions, and custom operators is implemented. The μ, λ, α EA was tested on an example of the design of a microwave transistor matching circuit.

In this paper, a multi-objective approach is applied to the design of aperiodic linear arrays of antennas. The adopted procedure is based on a standard Matlab implementation of the Controlled Elitist Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. Broadside symmetrical arrays of isotropic radiators are considered with both uniform and non-uniform excitations. The work focuses on whether, and in which design conditions, the aperiodic solutions obtained by the adopted standard multi-objective evolutionary procedure can approximate or outperform the Pareto-optimal front for the uniformspacing case computable by the Dolph-Chebyshev method.

Theoretical considerations of the multicast Quality of Service (QoS) routing have been a rapidly developing and dynamic research area for years. Several algorithms derived from different approaches have been proposed, while the pool of valid solutions to the problem is steadily growing. When new solutions are compared with their predecessors, as much information as possible about their characteristics and differences is needed. Both the graph theory and the optimization theory provide robust and objective means of comparing not only algorithms, but also the results they produce. However, any possible extension to the comparison methods is vital and can bring interesting new information that would eventually lead to innovative conclusions. This article presents a method, derived from practice and experience, that simulates the drainage of resources accumulated by consecutive communication allocations. The nature of this comparison is an extension to the classical measurement of the success ratio and this creates a context of the continuous measure of a success rather than a simple binary value. In this article such a method with regard to algorithms optimizing multicast problems for more than two criteria is used for the first time and leads to an interesting conclusion about the influence of the number of the criteria on the result.

This paper concerns some relationship between Bayes' theorem and rough sets. It is revealed that any decision algorithm satisfies Bayes' theorem, without referring to either prior or posterior probabilities inherently associated with classical Bayesian methodology. This leads to a new simple form of this theorem, which results in new algorithms and applications. Besides, it is shown that with every decision algorithm a flow graph can be associated. Bayes' theorem can be viewed as a flow conservation rule of information flow in the graph. Moreover, to every flow graph the Euclidean space can be assigned. Points of the space represent decisions specified by the decision algorithm, and distance between points depicts distance between decisions in the decision algorithm.

The bit rate of modern applications typically varies in time. We consider the traffic elastic if the rate of the sources can be controlled as a function of free resources along the route of that traffic. The objective is to route the demands optimally in sense of increasing the total network throughput while setting the rates of sources in a fair way. We propose a new fairness definition the relative fairness that handles lower and upper bounds on the traffic rate of each source and we compare it with two other known fairness definitions, namely, the max-min and the proportional rate fairness. We propose and compare different routing algorithms, all with three types of fairness definitions. The algorithms are all a tradeoff between network throughput, fairness and computational time.

Reliable comparison of optimization algorithms requires the use of specialized benchmarking procedures. This paper highlights motivations which influence their structure, discusses evaluation criteria of algorithms, typical ways of presenting and interpreting results as well as related statistical procedures. Discussions are based on examples from CEC and BBOB benchmarks. Moreover, attention is drawn to these features of comparison procedures, which make them susceptible to manipulation. In particular, novel application of the weak axiom of revealed preferences to the field of benchmarking shows why it may be misleading to assess algorithms on basis of their ranks for each of test problems. Additionally, an idea is presented of developing massively parallel implementation of benchmarks. Not only would this provide faster computation but also open the door to improving reliability of benchmarking procedures and promoting research into parallel implementations of optimization algorithms.

Rapid escalation of wireless communication and hands-free telephony creates a problem with acoustic echo in full-duplex communication applications. In this paper a simulation of model-based acoustic echo cancelation and near-end speaker extraction using statistical methods relying on nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is proposed. Acoustic echo cancelation using the NMF algorithm is developed and its implementation is presented, along with all positive, real time elements and factorization techniques. Experimental results are compared against the widely used existing adaptive algorithms which have a disadvantage in terms of long impulse response, increased computational load and wrong convergence due to change in near-end enclosure. All these shortcomings have been eliminated in the statistical method of NMF that reduces echo and enhances audio signal processing.

The paper is devoted to studying general features of dynamic network routing problems. It is shown that these problems may be interpreted as receding horizon optimal control problems or simply regulation problems. In the basic formulation it is assumed, that the nodes have no dynamics and the only goal of the optimization mechanism is to find the shortest paths from the source to the destination nodes. In this problem the optimization mechanism (i.e. the Bellman-Ford algorithm) may be interpreted as a receding horizon optimal control routine. Moreover, there is one-toone correspondence between the Bellman optimal cost-to-go function in the shortest path problem and the Lyapunov function in the regulation problem. At the end some results of the application of the routing optimization algorithm to an inverted pendulum regulation problem are presented.

In this paper, the concept of a multidimensional discrete spectral measure is introduced in the context of its application to the real-valued evolutionary algorithms. The notion of a discrete spectral measure makes it possible to uniquely define a class of multivariate heavy-tailed distributions, that have recently received substantial attention of the evolutionary optimization community. In particular, an adaptation procedure known from the distribution estimation algorithms (EDAs) is considered and the resulting estimated distribution is compared with the optimally selected referential distribution.

Speech enhancement is one of the many challenging tasks in signal processing, especially in the case of nonstationary speech-like noise. In this paper a new incoherent discriminative dictionary learning algorithm is proposed to model both speech and noise, where the cost function accounts for both “source confusion” and “source distortion” errors, with a regularization term that penalizes the coherence between speech and noise sub-dictionaries. At the enhancement stage, we use sparse coding on the learnt dictionary to find an estimate for both clean speech and noise amplitude spectrum. In the final phase, the Wiener filter is used to refine the clean speech estimate. Experiments on the Noizeus dataset, using two objective speech enhancement measures: frequency-weighted segmental SNR and Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other speech enhancement methods tested.
