Opis:: The problem of providing support for quality of service (QoS) guarantees is studied in many areas of information technologies. In recent years the evolution of software architectures led to the rising prominence of the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concept. For Web-based systems there are three attributes that directly relate to everyday perception of the QoS for the end user: availability, usability, and performance. The paper focuses on performance issues of service delivery. The architecture of Virtual Service Delivery System (VSDS), a tool to serve requests for synchronized services is presented. It is proposed suitable monitoring technique used for estimation of values of service parameters and allocation of communication and execution resources by means of service distribution. The paper also presents results of experiments performed in real environment that show effectiveness of proposed solutions.

Opis:: The main topic of this paper is the quality of the WWW service evaluation. The authors present well-known measurement methods, and present the new “Power” metric for quality, advocating it as a method of assessing the quality of such service. This metric is based on the most important network parameters that affect any assessment of the WWW service, i.e. Web page opening time and download data transfer rate. The new method is easy to implement, fast in operation, and provides stable and repeatable results.

Opis:: This paper shortly describes the IP QoS System which offers strict quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP-based networks and supports a number of, so called, classes of services. Such solution requires to implement in the network a set of QoS mechanisms and algorithm working on packet, connection request and provisioning levels. Furthermore, we require signaling system for informing the network about new connection request and network resource allocation capabilities for providing required resources to given connection. The IP QoS System is based on the next generation networks (NGN) and differentiated services (DiffServ) architectures and, at least for now, it is designed for single domain only.

Opis:: The ever-increasing use of the Internet has created massive amounts network traffic, causing problems related to its scalability, controllability, and manageability. Sophisticated network-based denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks increasingly pose a future threat. The literature proposes various methods that may help stop all HTTP DoS/DDoS assaults, but no optimal solution has been identified so far. Therefore, this paper attempts to fill the gap by proposing an alternative solution known as an efficient hybrid protocol framework for distributed DoS attack detection and mitigation (E-HPFDDM). Such an architecture addresses all aspects of these assaults by relaying on a three-layer mechanism. Layer 1 uses the outer advanced blocking (OAB) scheme which blocks unauthorized IP sources using an advanced backlisted table. Layer 2 is a validation layer that relies on the inner service trackback (IST) scheme to help determine whether the inbound request has been initiated by a legitimate or an illegitimate user. Layer 3 (inner layer) uses the deep entropy based (DEB) scheme to identify, classify and mitigate high-rate DDoS (HR-DDoS) and flash crowd (FC) attacks. The research shows that in contrast to earlier studies, the structure of the proposed system offers effective defense against DoS/DDoS assaults for web applications.

Opis:: The paper presents recent results corresponding to a new strategy for source traffic generating, named priority forcing scheme (PFS), allowing Internet users for getting better than best effort service in IP network. The concept of PFS assumes that an application, called PFS application, sends to the network a volume of additional traffic for the purpose of making the reservations for the data traffic in the overloaded router queues along the packet path in the IP network. The emitted redundant packets, named R-packets, should be rather of small size comparing to the data packets, named D-packets. The PFS scheme assumes that the R-packets waiting in a queue can be replaced by the arriving D-packets and belonging to the same flow. In this way, the D-packets can experience a prioritised service comparing to the packets produced by a non-PFS application. Notice that the proposed solution does not require any quality of service (QoS) mechanisms implemented in the network, like scheduler, dropping, marking etc., except R- and D-packets identification and replacing. We discuss the PFS efficiency for forcing priority in the overloaded conditions. Moreover simple system analysis is also presented. Finally, the profits of using PFS scheme are illustrated by examples corresponding to FTP (TCP controlled traffic) and VoIP (UDP streaming traffic) applications.

Opis:: In article a new concept concerning multimedia service modeling of stereoscopic motion pictures distribution is depicted. Presented conceptual model utilizes functionality approach supported by a Software-defined Networking (SDN) architecture. The core elements composing the proposed 3D television service are stated, depicting internal arrangement of a modern 3DTV service. Moreover, investigated examples of a functional utilization of the SDN approach in a 3DTV service model realization reveal key improvements towards greater flexibility and efficiency in heterogeneous users environment.

Opis:: This paper describes the problems associated with the provision of quality of service over an access connection to the Internet, i.e. the Internet Access Service (IAS). The paper has something of an overview character. Following a comprehensive introduction to the subject of “Changing Network Technologies” the paper focuses on the topic “Quality of IAS” in the light of regulatory directives of the European Parliament and the latest recommendations of ITU-T and ETSI. The focus will then shift to “Measurement Points and Measurement Scenarios for Determining QoS”. This topic will be described in detail and illustrated with several graphics. The final chapter has a pronounced scientific character and contains, among other things, a suggestion for a so-called Measurement Management System (MMS) to aid the design, execution and evaluation of efficient, automatic QoS measurements in networks.

Opis:: This paper presents a concept of IP Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture in conjunction with bandwidth brokerage and policy based network management, all aimed at efficient and flexible provision of the military oriented Quality of Service (M-QoS) features in the Australian Defence (strategic) wide area network and its satellite trunk interconnections with the tactical domain. Typical DiffServ functions are analysed in the paper with regard to their roles in offering M-QoS. Some preliminary simulation results of applying these mechanisms to achieve traffic policing and differentiation for (UDP) video traffic streams, are also presented. Finally, the paper proposes the use of bandwidth brokerage in each DiffiServ domain to facilitate automatic Service Level Specification (SLS) arrangements with end-user applications, and policy based network management to support the flexible implementation of bandwidth brokerage.

Opis:: This article analyzes the design and implementation of telecommunications service policies targeted at the poorest regions of Mexico (1990-2008). It begins by defining universal access and service policies, their economic and social rationale. Secondly, it discusses the scope of public policies on universal service provision designed by Mexican authorities to achieve the goal of universal access. Thirdly, the paper analyzes the distributive effects of this set of policies among the poorest sectors of the population. The sources on which this research was based were two national surveys: the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (2008), and the Household Survey of the Access and Use of Information Technologies (2007). The additional information on regional economic development was based on the poverty indexes by the national population council and economic information given by Mexico's Census Bureau. Additional use was made of the annual reports prepared by Ministry of Communications, statistics published by the Federal Telecommunications Commission and official documents prepared by the government agencies. Finally, a series of in-depth interviews was conducted with the former representatives of the Office of Rural Telephony. Finally, the article discusses, in the light of available evidence, possible explanations for the apparent failure of the universal service policy that was implemented to bring at least basic voice services to Mexico's neediest.

Opis:: In the recent ten years, with the development of new applications through Internet such as multimedia or networked control applications, users need more and more quality of service (QoS). However, the requested QoS is not the same depending on the application. Most of the new models to manage internet traffic are based on specific QoS criteria which should be optimized. This paper presents main multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) approaches such as MPLS adaptive traffic engineering (MATE), load distribution in MPLS (LDM) and load balancing over widest disjoints paths (LBWDP) that are new models for traffic engineering. It also introduces periodic multi-step (PEMS) algorithm that adapts the offered quality depending on the class of the routed traffic.

Opis:: The MANET networks are of prime interest for military networks. One of the proeminent routing protocols for MANET is OLSR, and indeed, OLSR has been used in many evaluations and experiments of MANETs. As OLSR is on its way to standardization, there are still a number of extensions that are useful and sometimes necessary for practical use of OLSR networks: such extensions are quality of service support, security, and OSPF interconnection. In this paper, we present the architecture, design, specifications and implementations that we made to integrate these features in a military test-bed. This test-bed is a real MANET comprising 18 nodes. These nodes communicate by radio and use the IEEE 802.11b MAC protocol. The OLSR routing protocol updates the routing table used by the IP protocol to forward packets.

Opis:: IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is a popular routing protocol used in wireless sensor networks and in the Internet of Things (IoT). RPL was standardized by the IETF in 2012 and has been designed for devices with limited resources and capabilities. Open-source RPL implementations are supported by popular IoT operating systems (OS), such as ContikiOS and TinyOS. In this work, we investigate the possibility of battery drain Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks in the RPL implementation of ContikiOS. In particular, we use the popular Cooja simulator and implement two types of DoS attacks, particularly version number modiﬁcation and “Hello” ﬂooding. We demonstrate the impact of these attacks on the power consumption of IoT devices. Finally, we discuss potential defenses relying on distributed intrusion detection modules.
