Opis:
The scenarios of cooperation between personal healthcare systems are discussed in this paper. Current telemedical solutions for home care provide the patient with a seamless diagnosis based on selected vital parameters. The application of two or more specialized systems monitoring the same subject rises the question of possible interference and cooperation. The cooperation between home care and wearable systems is of particular interest, because of their complementary features. Considerations of various cooperation scenarios led to the specification of three cooperation levels with regard to the required software integration. The paper presents also the design of a cooperation protocol for two prototype surveillance systems, enabling the use of communication resources of the stationary system to carry the messages of the wearable system over the wired transmission channel.

Opis:
The research on the human reading technique and text perception strategies needs objective evaluation methods. Our proposal consists in the use of scan-path recording and eye track processing results as estimators of reading skills and capability of error compensation. Visual tasks, being principal investigation tool, were completed by arrangement of texts for presentation, eye trajectory acquisition and assessment of comprehension degree. Our results show that gaze point statistics represent well the observer performance and skills in fast reading even in free-spotting-based visual tasks. Additionally, we reveal very high human tolerance for errors, outperforming any known optical character recognition software.

Opis:
The electrocardiogram is a digital record of effective action potentials of heart muscle fibres, thus it contains an important information about the heart function. Unfortunately, the signal theory-based description of the ECG contents is not efficient in extracting these data, and the practical interpretation software is mostly based on heuristic statements. This conclusion was a motivation for our research on the expert-like machine reasoning based on ECG perception analysis, physiology-driven feature extraction and fuzzy logic. This paper highlights the aspect of optimal description of an electrocardiogram contents in a digital record.

Opis:
Assisted living applications are commonly understood as technical environment for disabled or elderly people providing the care in the user-specific range. We are going to present the data capture methodology and design of a home care system for medical-based surveillance and man-machine communication. The proposed system consists of the video-based subject positioning, monitoring of the heart and brain electrical activity and eye tracking. The multimodal data are automatically interpreted and translated to tokens representing subject's status or command. The circadian repetitive status time series (behavioral patterns) are a background for learning of the subject's habits and for automatic detection of unusual behavior or emergency. Due to mutual compatibility of methods and data redundancy, the use of unified status description vouches for high reliability of the recognition despite the use of simplified measurements methods. This surveillance system is designed for everyday use in home care, by disabled or elderly people.

Opis:
This paper presents an effective solution of packetizing of non-uniform data for the purpose of reporting in telemedical surveillance systems with adaptive interpretation. Unlike the regular systems, where the data continuity is guaranteed by the common reporting interval and unified report content, the adaptive systems must implement a reservation procedure in order to proper data delivery, accordingly to sampling rates set individually for each of the diagnostic parameters. This procedure combines the content of every packet with respect to changes in data flow from particular diagnostic data, caused by time-variable requirements for the update rate of their time series. Our approach postulates appending to the information structure of two auxiliary data attributes, the validity period and the priority. The proposed solution was implemented and tested in a prototype cardiology-oriented monitor using two alternative reporting modes following the monitoring requisites. In immediate mode diagnostic packets are transmitted immediately accordingly to the time requirements, what allows the telediagnostic system to respond in short time in case of emergency. In delayed mode the transmission is deferred until packets are entirely filled with valid data, what limits the usage of data carrier for long-time regular reporting.

Opis:
This paper presents the study of algorithms for derivation of respiration waveform from the electrocardiogram. The problem has considerable clinical impact, because the heart rate and respiration are both driven by the central nervous system, and commonly used low-cost Holter recording may be used for efficient detection of breath disturbances (e.g. apnea). Three methods based on: heart rate, heart position and lung resistance influencing the ECG amplitude were compared in our research. Among 18 volunteers breathing at a controlled frequency all implemented algorithms show acceptable sensitivity of order of 97% in slow breathing phases detection. In fast breathing the sensitivity is reduced to 90%, since the heart beats are too sparse with regard of respiration waveform.

Opis:
This paper describes a set of visual tasks performed with a goal to find a correlation between observer's preoccupation and the observation time. Several aspects of objects differentiation were investigated: shape complexity, colour, uniqueness and size. Four visual tasks were performed by 10 volunteers. The eyeball position was captured with use of the OBER 2 eyetracker based on the infrared beam reflection measurements. Finally the recorded eyeball traces were subject of statistical processing. Interesting findings are the high attractiveness of complicated shapes and no influence of object's size on the observation time. Another result is an unexpected high inter-observers variation of attention difference in each visual task. The results play a key role in our research on perceptual model of biomedical signals and images. The other applications may be found in the area of visual information usability, ergonomics or perception-like control of automated visual systems.
