Opis:
Iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, a vital component of every living organism, and an essential micronutrient for all animal species. The primary source of iron for calves and other new-born ruminants is milk or a milk replacer, while for adults it is forage. Drinking water can contain various amounts of Fe ions and can be a source of this element as well. Systemic iron homeostasis in vertebrates is mostly regulated by hepcidin (HEP), a peptide synthesized and secreted by hepatocytes. The largest amounts of iron in the body are incorporated into proteins, mainly haemoglobin and myoglobin. This element participates in several biochemical processes including blood production, transport of oxygen, energy metabolism and immune processes. Iron deficiency can result in so-called iron deficiency anaemia, mostly occurring in young calves due to low iron content in cow’s milk and high demand for this element by calf’s organism. Iron poisoning mostly occurs due to excess iron intake caused by an inappropriate dose of iron given to animals (injection or per os administration) or accidental consumption of high doses of supplements. Excess iron intake can cause overload and damage of internal organs. Oxidation of ferrous iron in haemoglobin can result in methemoglobinemia and an inability of erythrocytes to carry oxygen. In recent years, scientists have implicated some questions regarding iron and ruminants that need re-evaluation or further investigation, e.g. the upper tolerable concentration of Fe in drinking water, the relationship between inflammation and iron status, serum Fe as an indicator of inflammation, or ferritin as a predictive factor for iron deficiency anaemia in cattle.

Opis:
In the third year of a pot experiment (in a greenhouse), the carryover influence of fertilization with fresh sewage sludge and, for comparison, mineral fertilization on the content and uptake of Fe, Mn, Mo, B, Ba, Sr, As, Sn, Li, and Ti by the biomass of Miscanthus sacchariflorus grass. The yield of silver-grass biomass was evaluated on the basis of two harvests (June and December). Trace elements in the tested grass as well as in the soil (after harvest) were determined by means of the ICP-AES technique after sample combustion in a muffle furnace. Significant influence of sewage sludge fertilization on yield of silver- grass biomass was found. Grass harvested in autumn contained higher contents of some analyzed trace elements (Fe, Mn, Sr, Ba, and Ti) than that harvested in summer. The uptake of trace elements uptake by the silver-grass biomass was higher from the objects fertilized with sewage sludge than the ones receiving mineral fertilization. After three years of cultivation, the soil contained more Fe, Mn, Ba, Sr, Ti, B, and Li as compared to the content before the experiment.
W trawie zebranej jesienią stwierdzono większą zawartość niektórych analizowanych pierwiastków (Fe, Mn, Sr, Ba i Ti) niż w trawie zebranej latem. Pobranie pierwiastków śladowych z plonem biomasy miskanta było większe z obiektów nawożonych osadem ściekowym niż z obiektu nawo¿onego nawozami mineralnymi. Po trzech latach uprawy stwierdzono w glebie większą zawartość Fe, Mn, Ba, Sr, Ti, B i Li, w porównaniu z zawartością przed założeniem eksperymentu.

Opis:
Although beneficial properties of mineral waters are acknowledged by law in many countries, the use of water for medicinal purposes is not universally accepted. Notably numerous waters (especially mineral and curative ones) have high concentrations of mineral and trace elements. These mineral waters are common on the market and their availability is not regulated by law. Due to the hazard of overdosing, quantification of trace elements and minerals seems to be necessary. The World Health Organization, European Standards and Polish Standards recommend different methods for elemental determination, i.e. spectrometry, photometry for zinc determination, colorimetry or spectrometry for copper, and ionic chromatography for calcium, chloride and fluoride. In this paper, alternative, electrochemical methods have been applied to determine zinc, copper, calcium, chloride and fluoride in most popular natural and curative waters from southern Poland. The determined elemental content varied between 3.85-33.54 μg L-1 for zinc, 85-15.33 μg L-1 for copper, 2.8-2433.63 mg L-1 for chloride, 0.4-1.66 mg L-1 for fluoride and 11.05-478.48 mg L-1 for calcium. The voltammetric method was tested according to the validation procedures, taking into account the following parametes: linearity range, limit of detection and limit of quantification and precision. The results show that the applied electroanalytical methods are suitable for determination of the selected elements in waters of natural origin, ensuring low instrumental and analysis costs while providing results comparable with ones achieved with recommended methods.

Opis:
The Solidago canadensis (Canada goldenrod) species is an invasive plant in Europe and Asia. It grows mainly in anthropogenic environments, including those with a high content of heavy metals in soil. Goldenrod is also a honey plant, and its inflorescences and leaves are used in herbal medicine. The aim of the study was to determine the content of metals: Mg, Mn, Cu and Zn, in inflorescences and leaves of S. canadensis and in water extracts prepared from them. Material for the research was obtained in Poland. The content of the metals was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. It was found that leaves of S. canadensis contained more Mg and Zn, but less Cu compared with inflorescences. The content of the metals in water extracts was proportional to their content in the raw material, except the content of Mn in leaves. Among the metals studied, the highest extraction of Cu and Mg was noted in infusions of leaves and inflorescences, while Zn achieved the highest extraction in infusions of inflorescences. Mn was extracted to the least extent both in leaves and inflorescence infusions. Infusions of goldenrod leaves provided similar amounts of Mg, Cu and Zn as tea infusions. Infusions of inflorescences provided more Cu and Zn than infusions of chamomile flowers. Considering the use of S. canadensis in phytotherapy, water extracts from goldenrod leaves and inflorescences had a negligible share of the analysed metals (on average about 1% or less) in the recommended daily allowances (RDAs).

Obiektami badań były kombinacje ze zróżnicowanym nawożeniem azotem: 1 - kontrola (bez nawożenia azotem), 2 - ENTEC-26 35+35, 3 - ENTEC-26 70+70, 4 - ENTEC-26 105+105, 5 - saletra amonowa 35+35, 6 - saletra amonowa 70+70, 7 - saletra amonowa 105+105, gdzie: 35+35, 70+70 i 105+105 oznacza dawkę azotu w kg N ha- 1 stosowaną w nawożeniu przedsiewnym i w nawożeniu pogłównym. w korzeniach spichrzowych oraz w glebie po uprawie marchwi zawartość: Ag, Al, B, Ba, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Dy, Fe, Ga, In, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sc, Sn, Sr, Ti, Tm, Y, Yb i V była oznaczana techniką ICP-OES. Nawożenie azotem miało istotny wpiyw na zawartość Co, Fe, In, Li, Mn, Ni, S, Sc, Sr, Y, Yb i V w marchwi.

Opis:
The problem of relationships between the ultra-trace element content in a human organism and obesity has been poorly studied thus far. The primary objective of the current research has been to investigate the association between hair ultra-trace element content, body mass index and age in adult women. 1281 adult women participated in the survey. Hair ultra-trace element content (Ag, Au, Ga, Ge, La, Pt, Rb, Sb, Tl, W, Zr) was assessed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using a NexION 300D+NWR213 apparatus (Perkin-Elmer, USA). No significant association between the hair Ag, Au, Ga, Ge, La, and Pt content and body mass index (BMI) values was observed. The hair Rb levels in normal weight, overweight and obese women exceeded the respective values in underweight females by 33 (p < 0.001), 105 (p < 0.001), and 314% (p < 0.001). The hair Sb content in obese persons was 38 (p < 0.001), 38 (p < 0.001), and 22% (p = 0.022) higher in comparison to the values observed in underweight, normal weight and overweight subjects. A twofold increase in the hair Tl content was observed in obese females in comparison to the underweight (p < 0.001) and normal weight ones (p = 0.037). It has been observed that obese women were characterized by 33% higher hair W levels in comparison to the underweight (p < 0.001) and normal weight group values (p = 0.002). The results of correlation and multiple regression analyses partially confirmed these findings and indicated that hair Rb values were characterized by the closest association with the age and BMI. To our knowledge, it is the first report on a relationship between the hair ultra-trace element content and increased body weight. The data may be used as reference values of the content of ultra-trace element in hair of women with different body mass index. However, additional experimental and clinical studies are required to explore the mechanisms of such an association.

Opis:
Disturbances of mineral metabolism are one of the many complications observed in patients with renal failure. Fluids used in dialysotherapy may introduce elements to a patient’s body. On the other hand, some trace elements may be removed. Dialysis fluids contain chlorides of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K), but they may also be contaminated by toxic metals. In the first part of our work the amounts of Mg, Ca, zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) were determined in samples of hemodialysis fluids just before and after a dialyzer. The concentration of copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were measured by the atomic absorption spectrometry method (AAS) in a graphite furnace (GFAAS) in the same dialysates. The average concentration of Cu in dialysis fluids before and after dialyzer was 13.51 and 10.51 μg L-1 respectively, Al – 8.72 and 7.88 μg L-1, Pb – 24.03 and 22.81 μg L-1, Cd – 1.09 and 1.07 μg L-1, Cr – 5.91 and 6.28 μg L-1. Except for Cr (p < 0.05), the comparison of concentrations of all the measured elements before and after haemodialysis did not show any significant differences. Positive significant correlations between the element concentration before and after a dialyzer were found for Al (r = 0.33030 and Cd (r = 0.7496). In the samples of dialysis fluids of patients who had been dialyzed for less than one year, a negative balance of elements was found, except Pb. The balance was positive in patients who had been dialyzed for more than a year. Our findings also show statistically significant negative correlation between duration of dialysis treatments and Al concentration. Statistically, the examined dialysis fluids seem to be safe for dialyzed patients. However, individual data show that it is important to control elemental levels in dialyzates used for many years to prevent some complications in these patients.
Porównawcze oznaczenia stężenia miedzi (Cu), glinu (Al), ołowiu (Pb), kadmu (Cd) i chromu (Cr) wykonano metodą spektrometrii absorpcji atomowej z atomizacją w piecu grafitowym (GFAAS). Zastosowane procedury analityczne zapewniają dobrą czułość i precyzję metody. Średnie stężenie Cu w płynach przed i za dializatorem wynosiło 13,51 i 10,51 μg L-1, Al – 8,27 i 7,88 μg L-1, Pb – 24,03 i 22,81 μg L-1, Cd – 1,09 i 1,07 μg L-1, Cr – 5,91 i 6,28 μg L-1. W próbkach płynów dializacyjnych pacjentów dializowanych w czasie krótszym niż rok stwierdzono, z wyjątkiem Pb, ujemny bilans pierwiastków, a powyżej roku – dodatni.

Disturbances in levels of trace elements and oxidative stress are associated with the glycemic status, which is implicated in the development and progression of diabetes. The present study was conducted on 50 patients with type 2 diabetes, 40 years of age, gender and body mass index matched with healthy controls (Damanhur Educational Hospital, El Beheira, Egypt). Fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum catalase, paraoxonase activity, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured spectrophotometrically. The blood serum was digested and then used to determine the levels of seven trace elements, such as Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, As and Se, using inductive coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The mean of serum catalase, paraoxonase activities and the concentration of Fe, Se, Zn, and Cd were significantly decreased, whereas the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and the concentrations of Cu, Cd and As were significantly higher in type 2 diabetic group compared with the control group. The multivariate receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and variable importance in projection (VIP) scores were used to analysis the data. VIP score revealed that As, Fe and Se were strongly associated with the oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic patients. The best cut-off values for serum concentrations of Fe, Se and As were 46.78, 215 and 1.01 μg L-1, respectively, which discriminated between diabetic patients with oxidative stress from the control group. The study showed that changes in trace element concentrations in diabetic patients may contribute to the lowering of antioxidant enzymes t, further leading to the progress of T2DM.

Lithium is one of the most widely used medications for the treatment of bipolar disorder (BD). It also has some side effects on thyroid functions. We aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress, trace elements, and hemorheological parameters on the pathophysiology of thyroid dysfunctions developed by lithium treatment in patients with BD. Patients with BD were divided into three groups: patients that non-lithium-treated, lithium-treated patients for 4-6 weeks, and lithium-treated patients for 40-68 weeks. Blood samples for analysis were taken before and after the treatment period. After analysis, patients were divided into six groups: non-treatment BD group (Group 1); short-term lithium-treatment group that did not develop thyroid dysfunctions (Group 2); short-term lithium-treatment group that developed hyperthyroidism (Group 3); longterm lithium treatment group that developed hypothyroidism (Group 4), long-term lithium-treatment group that developed hyperthyroidism (Group 5), and long-term lithium-treatment group that did not develop thyroid dysfunctions (Group 6). Plasma and whole blood viscosity levels were significantly increased in Groups 4 and 6 compared to Groups 1, 2, and 3. Hemoglobin levels were lower in Group 4 than in Groups 1, 2, and 5. Fibrinogen values were higher in Groups 4 and 5 than Group 1. Plasma and erythrocyte malondialdehyde levels were higher in Group 4 than In Groups 1, 2, 3, and 5. Also, they were increased in Group 6 in comparison with Groups 2 and 3. Erythrocyte glutathione levels were lower in Groups 4 and 6 than Groups 1, 2, 3 and 5. The results of this study indicate that oxidative stress increased with treatment time in lithium-induced thyroid dysfunctions. Also, whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, zinc, and copper levels were affected by lithium treatment and treatment duration induced thyroid dysfunctions.

Opis:
Long-term application of fertilizers can change the chemical composition of the soil environment. Our objective has been to determine total amounts of trace elements (Cu, Mn, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the top layer of soil after 34 years of annual applications of organic and mineral fertilizers. The first experiment was set up in 1972 on lessive soil, while the second one was started in 1973 on brown soil. The same crops were grown in both experiments. Bovine manure and slurry were applied in the first experiment, while the other one involved the application of swine manure and slurry. Slurry was applied at two different doses. One dose of slurry was applied together with manure and mineral fertilization in amounts balanced according to nitrogen. The other dose of slurry was determined so that it brought to soil the same amount of organic carbon as introduced with a manure dose. Manure and slurry were also applied in combination with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in amounts equal half the content of these components used delivered through exclusive mineral fertilization. The total metal content was assessed using the atomic absorption spectrometry method, with prior mineralization in a 1:1 mixture of nitric and chloric acid. The application of fertilizers over many years increased the content of trace elements. The actual effect varied between the analyzed soil types, depending also on the type of fertilizer and the dose of slurry. The average content of Cu, Cd and Pb was 13.8% higher in lessive than in brown soil, while the amount Mn was lower by as much as 32.7%. Among the doses balanced with respect to nitrogen, the effect of manure caused an increase in the Mn, Zn and Ni content in lessive soil, as well as Cu and Pb in brown soil compared to the application of the slurry dose balanced with manure according toorganic carbon. Mineral fertilizers did not increase the content of the analyzed metals as much as manure, with the exception of Cu and Pb in lessive soil and Ni in brown soil.

Opis:
The paper gives a comprehensive insight into the role of zinc in the biosphere. It reviews numerous functions of this metal at various levels of the organisation of ecosystems. An attempt has ben made to assess its importance as a microelement, while not neglecting its toxicity due to excessive accumulation of zinc in the environment. Zinc is a natural component of the Earth's crust, but in many places it has accumulated in amounts near or above the safe levels. Currently, the use of this metal is very broad, and therefore attention should be drawn to possible consequences arising from elevated levels of zinc in the environment. Dispelling controversies surrounding heavy metals is a necessary step for gaining systematic and wider knowledge on these elements. This in turn will create an opportunity for the development of strategies and subsequent actions undertaken by everyone, from individuals to major international industrial corporations, aimed at achieving homeostasis in an environment polluted with heavy metals. Increased levels of zinc can adversely affect microbiological and biochemical processes occurring in the soil and the development of plants, which has a negative impact on the quantity and quality of crops. Therefore, low bioavailability of heavy metals, including zinc, in agricultural land is a key to the stability of ecosystems and food security.

Opis:
The results of a pot experiment on soil application of sewage sludge samples (at the rate of 200 g DM • pot-1) from 19 sewage treatment plants localized in region of the Green Lungs of Poland in three areas: the Great Masurian Lakes, Iława Ostróda Lake District and Łyna River Basin, are discussed in the paper. The sewage treatment plants had different capacities, received different shares of industrial sewage water and used different technologies of sewage sludge dewatering. In the pot experiment the following five vegetable crops were grown (without winter break): root celery, lettuce, small radish, Swiss chard and spinach. Before planting the first plant (celery) and after harvesting the last plant in the rotation (spinach), physical and chemical properties of the soil were studied in order to determine if the amendment of soil with sewage sludge could pose any environmental risk to the growth of vegetable crops. It was found that most of the applied samples of sewage sludge did not produce adverse effects on the determined parameters. In many cases, the content of organic carbon increased soil retention properties were improved under the effect of sewage sludge. Sewage sludge form Zalewo, because of its high content of chromium, was implied as being hazardous for growing plants, as it could result in soil and plant contamination. When sewage sludge from Olsztyn, Olsztynek and Spychowo was applied to soil, zinc contamination occurred.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki doświadczenia wazonowego z zastosowaniem osadów ściekowych, w jednakowej dawce 200 g s.m.-wazon'1, pobranych z 19 oczyszczalni ścieków zlokalizowanych na obszarze tzw. Zielonych Płuc Polski w trzech regionach geograficznych: Wielkich Jezior Mazurskich, Pojezierza Ostródzko-Iławskiego i zlewni rzeki Łyny. Oczyszczalnie różniły się wielkością, udziałem przemysłowych ścieków i technologią odwadniania osadów, z czego wynikały różnice w składzie chemicznym tych odpadów organicznych.

Opis:
New regular examination of soil contamination with trace elements (Pb, Zn, Cu) in the upper zone of spruce forest in the western (Mount Szrenica) and eastern (Kowarski Grzbiet range) Karkonosze Mountains was carried out as part of the monitoring network of forest ecosystems in the Karkonosze Mountains National Park. Soil samples were taken at the following three depths: forest litter (the whole layer), 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm. Clearly raised concentrations of lead were found, particularly in forest litter (mean 83.2 mg⋅kg-1) and in horizons 0-10 cm (mean 73.3 mg⋅kg-1). Copper and zinc occurred in smaller amounts, in the ectohumus layer 47.5 mg Zn⋅kg-1 and 23.8 mg Cu⋅kg-1 (mean concentrations), and in the layer 0-10 cm – 33.7 mg Zn⋅kg-1 and 19.9 mg Cu⋅kg-1. Zinc and copper concentrations in soils of the upper spruce forest zone did not increase with altitude above mean sea level, and were slightly higher in the eastern part of Karkonosze Mts. (the Kowarski Grzbiet). Concentrations of lead were apparently higher in the western part of the Karkosze Mts. and increased with altitude AMSL.
W strefie regla górnego Karkonoszy zachodnich (Szrenica) i wschodnich (Kowarski Grzbiet) przeprowadzono analizę zanieczyszczenia gleb pierwiastkami śladowymi (Pb, Zn, Cu) opartą na monitoringu ekosystemów leśnych Karkonoskiego Parku Narodowego. W tym celu pobrano próbki z trzech głębokości: próchnicę nadkładową (w całej miąższości), 0-10 cm i 10-20 cm. Stwierdzono wyraźnie podwyższoną zawartość ołowiu, szczególnie w próchnicach nadkładowych (średnio 83,2 mg⋅kg-1) i warstwie 0-10 cm (średnio 73,3 mg⋅kg-1). Miedź i cynk występują w mniejszych ilościach, w ektohumusie średnio 47,5 mg Zn⋅kg-1 i 23,8 mg Cu⋅kg-1, a w warstwie 0-10 cm średnio 33,7 mg Zn⋅kg-1 i 19,9 mg Cu⋅kg-1.
