BioBaler harvesting system
Opis:
Willow biomass can be collected in the form of entire or chipped shoots. The method depends on the harvest cycle of the plants, availability of necessary machines and the expected use of harvested raw material. Methods of harvesting influence on biomass quality during its acquisition and further in the storage period. Therefore, the aim of the research was to characterize the harvest of willow plantation with the use of a biobaler WB 55 and to assess the quality of the obtained biomass during the 9-month period of its storage. Willow was harvested with biobaler WB 55 in January 2010 on a commercial plantation. The 3.5 ha plantation was situated in the north-east of Poland, in the village of Dorotowo (53°42′9.88″ N 20°25′11.02″ E). An analysis of the biomass quality in terms of its thermophysical and chemical properties was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the UWM in Olsztyn. Willow harvesting with a unit consisting of a 129 kW tractor and biobaler WB 55 was conducted efficiently. The average harvesting efficiency was about 18 bales per hour of the unit operation (8.75 Mg h-1 FM). The fresh matter density in the bales averaged 358.10 kg m-3 FM, whereas in dry matter it was 166.16 kg m-3 DM. With extended duration of storage, the quality of willow biomass as an energy raw material improved. The biomass in the bales steadily lost its moisture, from 53.06% in January to 17.48% in September. On the other hand, the lower heating value increased during that same period from 7.75 MJ kg-1 to 15.65 MJ kg-1. It has been found based on the observations made during the study period that the advantages of a biobaler WB 55 are the easy and efficient harvesting of plants on a plantation and bales can be used for energy production as needed.

Opis:
Most of the energy today is obtained from fossil fuels, which are becoming more expensive and less available. Energy from biomass produced on agricultural land is an alternative option. Energy crops should guarantee high yield and good quality parameters, associated with their use in energy production. This study analysed the thermophysical and chemical properties of biomass obtained from 15 new clones of willow selected in the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The plants were cultivated in one- and three-year rotation cycles, run in 2009-2011 at two research stations: in Bałdy and in Łężany. The energy content as well as elemental and physical properties of biomass were analysed. The higher heating value was better in biomass from one-year shoots (on average 19.66 MJ kg-1 d.m.). The highest value of this parameter was recorded for the clone of Salix acutifolia UWM 093 (20.04 MJ kg-1 d.m.). The higher heating value in biomass of three-year old clones was on average lower by 0.06 MJ kg-1 d.m. The lower heating value in biomass increased in longer willow coppice harvest cycles. The highest lower heating value was recorded for the clone UWM 035 of Salix pentandra (9.27 MJ kg-1) harvested in a three-year cycle, whereas the lowest one was achieved by the clone of Salix dasyclados UWM 155 (7.55 MJ kg-1) harvested in a one- -year cycle. The average moisture content in three-year shoots was 50.01% d.m., being higher by 2.31% in one-year shoots. The ash content was lower in biomass harvested in three-year rotation. In conclusion, willow biomass obtained in a three-year harvest cycle contains less of undesirable elements and proves to be better quality fuel than biomass obtained in a one-year harvest cycle.

Opis:
The studies on boron concentrations were carried out on the samples collected from the groundwater intakes located in Northern Poland in the Lower Vistula Valley and in the Starogard Lakeland with diversified hydro-geological conditions and depths. The 57 samples of water for assays were collected from the following intakes: Tczew “Park” and Tczew “Motława”, Gniew, Wielkie Walichnowy, Małe Walichnowy, and Pelplin. The deepest drillings extended to 180 m (cretaceous stages), out of which 20% comprised quaternary formations up to 123 m deep. The analysis of water samples in these regions was performed from 2009-2011. The geological architecture of these areas was identified based on the legal documentation on water utilization submitted by the operators of the water intakes. The Polish sanitary regulations specify that the maximum content of boron in drinking water is 1.0 mg dm-3. That it was found in the waters mesoregion Starogard Lakeland may be assumed to be good in the context of chemical status, because in all of the 24 water samples tested, the boron concentration did not exceed the threshold value. In the Lower Vistula Valley mesoregion in 17 samples out of 33 tested, the level of boron exceeded 1.0 mg dm-3, which means that prior to consumption these waters require treatment to reduce the concentration of this element to the permissible limits. Slightly higher concentrations of boron (on average 1.63 mg dm-3) were detected in water deposited in the cretaceous formations situated in Wielkie Wachlinowy and Małe Wachlinowy. It was also found that the content of boron in groundwater depended on the nature of geological layers from which the tested water samples were collected. The statistical analysis demonstrates that the aquifer stages exerted a significant impact on the content of boron in the tested water samples and the differences between them are significant.
Próbki wody do analiz pobierano z ujęcia Tczew ,,Park’’ i Tczew ,,Motława’’, Gniew, Wielkie Walichnowy, Małe Walichnowy i Pelplin.

Opis:
The study was conducted in 1998-2000, in the Olsztyn Lakeland, on permanent grassland communities with at least 5% share of the following leguminous and herbaceous species. Trifolium pratense, Trifolium repens, Lotus corniculatus, Lathyrus pratensis, Lotus uliginosus, Vicia cracca, Taraxacum officnale, Achillea millefolium, Plantago lanceolata, Alchemilla vulgaris, Heracleum sibiricum and Cirsium oleraceum. In total, 444 plant samples were analyzed, including 123 collected on organic soils. The objective of this study was to determine the accumulation of potassium, calcium and magnesium by selected species of grassland legumes and herbs, in view of the abundance of the above elements in soil. The analyzed organic soils were characterized by low abundance of potassium and moderate abundance of magnesium, whereas the mineral soils had a very low or low potassium content and a very high or high magnesium content. The habitats varied widely with respect to the calcium abundance. The biomass of the analyzed plant species contained high concentrations of potassium, magnesium and calcium. Plants collected from mineral soils contained more potassium and less magnesium than those growing on organic soils. Taraxacum officinale and Achillea millefolium were rich in potassium, Achillea millefolium, Lotus uliginosus, Heracleum sibiricum, Vicia cracca, Taraxacum officinale and Cirsium oleraceum had a high magnesium content, whereas Cirsium oleraceum, Heracleum sibiricum and Alchemilla vulgaris accumulated the largest amounts of calcium. The ability of dicotyledonous plants to accumulate high concentrations of calcium and magnesium resulted in a low K:(Ca+Mg) ratio.

Opis:
Multi-component fertilizers should be selected based on a thorough analysis of a variety of factors such as plant species, expected yield, nutrient availability, time and mode of application. Mixed fertilizers have to be applied in a rational manner, and their rates should be determined in view of crop yield, crop quality and fertilizer efficiency, so as to maximize the benefits of fertilizer use. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of multi-component fertilizers, Amofosmag 4 and Amofosmag 3, on winter wheat yield, and the content and uptake of macronutrients. A three-year field experiment (2008- 2010) was carried out in a randomized block design at the Research and Experimental Station in Tomaszkowo, at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (NE Poland). The experiment comprised three fertilization treatments in four replications: control treatment (simple fertilizers) and two treatments with mixed multi-component fertilizers, Amofosmag 4 and Amofosmag 3. The tested crop was winter wheat cv. Bogatka. Winter wheat grain yield was modified by fertilizers and weather conditions. The most beneficial effect was reported for Amofosmag 4, which increased the yield of wheat grain by 7% on average, compared with the remaining treatments. A significantly lower grain yield was noted in the second year of the study characterized by adverse weather conditions. The concentrations of the analyzed macronutrients in winter wheat grain and straw varied insignificantly between fertilization treatments. Simple and multi-component fertilizers exerted a comparable effect on the mineral composition of the test crop. The only exception was the potassium content of wheat straw, which was significantly higher after the application of multi-component fertilizers. Significant differences were observed in this respect between successive years of the study. The highest total uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium by winter wheat plants was noted in the Amofosmag 4 treatment, and the highest total uptake of potassium and calcium was observed in the Amofosmag 3 treatment. Amofosmag 4 was found to be the most efficient fertilizer, which suggests that the nutrients contained in multi-component fertilizers are more readily available to plants.

Opis:
The paper presents research on the copper content in grain of winter wheat and spring barley cultivated in 1986-2001, on grey-brown podzolic soils developed from loess (static fertilization experiment) underlying a field located in the Rzeszów Foothills (SE Poland). The experiment was set up by the random sub-block method, on a field under a static fertilization trial composed of a four-year crop rotation system and the NPK Mg or NPK Mg Ca fertilization system. The first variable was liming (A) and the second one consisted of different mineral fertilization variants (B). The basic level of fertilization (N1P1K1) was 80 kg N ha-1, 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 and 120 kg K2O ha-1 under spring barley and 90 kg N ha-1, 80 kg P2O5 ha-1, 100 kg K2O ha-1 under winter wheat. The crop rotation was the following: in 1986-1989 – potatoes, spring barley, fodder cabbage, winter wheat; in 1990-1993, 1994-1997, 1997-2001 – potatoes, spring barley, fodder sunflower, winter wheat. Mineral fertilization included NPK fertilization with constant Mg fertilization, and differentiated NPK fertilization with constant Mg and Ca (liming) fertilization. Liming was performed in 1985, 1989, 1993 and in 1997 (4 t ha-1 CaO). The experiment included 14 fertilization variants with 4 replications. The copper content in plants was determined by FAAS after mineralization of plant samples in a mixture of HNO3:HClO4:H2SO4 in the 20:5:1 ratio. Liming decreased the copper content in spring barley grain but had no statistically significant effect on the copper content in winter wheat grain. Mineral fertilization did influence the copper content winter wheat grain, but decreased it grain obtained from the plot with lower P fertilization together with NK fertilizer. However the interaction (liming x NPK fertilization) did not influence the copper content in cereal grain.
Podstawowy poziom nawożenia (N1P1K1) jęczmienia jarego wynosił: 80 kg N ha-1, 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 i 120 kg K2O ha-1, natomiast pszenicy ozimej: 90 kg N ha-1, 80 kg P2O5 ha-1 i 100 kg K2O ha-1. Doświadczenie obejmowało 4 zmianowania: w latach 1986-1989 – ziemniaki, jęczmień jary, kapustę pastewną, pszenicę ozimą, a w latach 1990-1993, 1994-1997, 1997-2001 – ziemniaki, jęczmień jary, słonecznik pastewny, pszenicę ozimą. Wapnowanie zastosowano w latach: 1985, 1989, 1993 (4 t ha-1 CaO).

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on the influence of liming and mineral fertilization on the yields and boron content of potato tubers and green matter of fodder sunflower grown in four and three rotations, respectively, on soil developed from loess. The experiment was set up on a field submitted to long-term fertilization and located in the village Krasne near Rzeszow, lying in the Rzeszów Foothills (Poland). Boron was determined colorimetrically with diantrimide after digestion of dried plant material at 550°C and dissolution of the residue in hydrochloric acid solution. Average yields of potato tubers and green matter of fodder sunflower were higher after liming, but statistical significance was confirmed only for fodder sunflower. Mineral NPK fertilization, regardless of liming, significantly enhanced the yield of green matter of fodder sunflower and, in most fertilization treatments, raised potato tuber yields. Potato tubers accumulated much smaller amounts of boron (2.2-7.5 mg kg-1 DM) than aerial parts of fodder sunflower (20- 60 mg kg-1 DM). The boron content was significantly lower in potato tubers from the limed variant than in plants from the non-limed field. The response of sunflower to soil liming was opposite. The mineral fertilization applied, regardless of liming, had no significant effect on the boron content of potato tubers. Mineral nutrition reduced the boron content in the sunflower biomass under the influence of increasing doses of nitrogen and against the background of constant phosphorus-potassium fertilization.

Opis:
Plant demand for molybdenum is small, but it is a micronutrient of great significance for the proper development and functioning of organisms. Its deficiencies may disturb the absorption and influence of other elements on living organisms. The availability of molybdenum for plants depends on many factors, including the fertilization used. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of liming and differentiated NPK mineral fertilization against the background of a constant level of Mg fertilization on the molybdenum content in potato tubers and in the green mass of fodder sunflower grown on loess soil in four and three rotations, respectively. The research was carried out as a long-term experiment on a field owned by the University of Rzeszow in Krasne near Rzeszow (Rzeszow Foothills). The soil on which the research was carried out was a Haplic Luvisols formed from loess. The experiment was set up in a random sub-block design with four replicates. The first variable factor was liming (A2) or its lack (A1), while the second one consisted of different doses of mineral fertilization (14 fertilizer objects) with constant magnesium nutrition. Triple superphosphate contained significant amounts of molybdenum: from traces to 18 mg Mo kg-1. Plant samples were collected after potato and sunflower harvest from four rotations. Molybdenum in dry plant material was determined colorimetrically with the thiocyanate method. The molybdenum content in potato tubers ranged from 0.147 to 0.573 mg kg-1, being much higher in the green mass of fodder sunflower, where it ranged from 0.467 to 2.280 mg kg-1. Liming increased the molybdenum content in the green mass of fodder sunflower. This treatment caused significant changes in the content of this lement in potato tubers. The mineral fertilization of NPK (regardless of liming) increased the molybdenum content in the green mass of fodder sunflower and in potato tubers compared to the object without mineral fertilization.

Potato tubers accumulated much smaller amounts of boron (2.2-7.5 mg kg-1 DM) than aerial parts of fodder sunflower (20-60 mg kg-1 DM). The boron content was significantly lower in potato tubers from the limed variant than in plants from the non-limed field. The response of sunflower to soil liming was opposite. Opis:
This paper presents results of a study on the molybdenum content in grain of winter wheat and spring barley grown on a permanently fertilized field on loessial soil in the Rzeszow Foothills (Podgórze Rzeszowskie), in Poland. The experiment was set up in randomized sub-blocks, with potato, spring barley, fodder sunflower, and winter wheat plants grown in 4 four-year rotation cycles. Fodder cabbage was grown instead of sunflower in the second crop rotation. The first variable factor was liming (A2) or its lack (A1), while the second one consisted of different doses of mineral fertilization. Mineral NPK nutrition was applied together with constant Mg as well as Mg and Ca fertilization (liming). The general fertilization level (N1 P1 K1) for spring barley was 80 kg N ha-1, 43.6 kg P ha-1 and 99.6 kg K ha-1, while for winter wheat it was 90 kg N ha-1, 34.9 kg P ha-1 and 83 kg K ha-1. Constant magnesium fertilization was applied at a 24.1 kg Mg ha-1 dose. Liming at a dose of 4 t CaO ha-1 was applied before starting the experiment and in each year that completed a subsequent crop rotation cycle. There was a significant increase in the molybdenum concentration in grain of winter wheat and spring barley due to the liming applied. A moderate molybdenum content was found in winter wheat grain on non-limed soil 0.278 mg kg-1 DM and on limed soil 0.320 mg kg-1 DM; while in spring barley grain on non-limed soil, it equalled 0.291 mg kg-1 DM and on limed soil 0.455 mg kg-1 DM. Mineral fertilization increased the content of this component in wheat grain and usually or most often reduced its amount in barley grain. The interaction of liming with mineral fertilization did not have any significant effect on the molybdenum content of winter wheat grain and resulted in an increase in the molybdenum content in spring barley grain.
