Opis:
Solidago canadensis (Canadian goldenrod) is an invasive plant species occurring in Poland. Canadian goldenrod tolerates a wide range of habitat conditions, it grows in landfills and soils contaminated with heavy metals. The paper presents the selected biometric features of the plant which indicate the possibility of its use for phytoremediation purposes. The analysis was based on the results of own research and literature data. The biometric features of the plant chose for the research are: aboveground biomass (which reaches about 4.4 tons d.m/ha on a surface covered with the plant in more than 70%), the possibility of annual collection of the aboveground parts and their use for energy purposes, extensive roots and rhizomes system ensuring soil stabilization, high accumulation of some metals in the underground parts of the plant.

The paper presents the results of research focused on the investigations of the possibilities to use biochar to improve the quality and productivity of soils. Biochar is a material similar to the commonly known charcoal obtained from the thermolysis process (a process similar to dry distillation of wood). The structure and technical properties of biochar depend on the type of biomass which is produced and the thermal decomposition process conditions: process time, temperature and atmosphere. It was found that a positive effect of biochar on the soil properties is manifested through the improvement of soil fertility, better water retention, improvement of the cation exchange, and the regulation of the pH. The biochar used in the present study was obtained by autothermal thermolysis of biomass at 300 °C. Three types of biochars of different origin were used. The biochar samples were subjected to ultimate and proximate analysis, as well as structural and porosimetric investigations. The experimental research were also conducted on the experimental test field and gave a positive effect of the presence of biochar on soil quality and plant yield. Biochar introduced into soil allows for long-term storage of carbon. The introduction of biochar to soil has a positive effect on plant growth, higher dose resulted in an increase in biochar and plant mass.

Opis:
Manufacturing units, which use biomass for combustion and co-firing, are obliged to gradually increase the amount of biomass from agricultural sources in place of timber biomass from forests. Many different species of trees that grow on arable land, bushes, grasses or perennials can be used for energy purposes. A huge variety of plants that give biomass useful in the power industry, is connected with a large diversity of physical characteristics (hardness, specific gravity, moisture content, porosity) and chemical composition. It significantly affects not only the calorific value of biomass but also the condition of the boilers in which it is burnt. This paper presents the results of the research concerning the influence of the process of combustion biomass from seven plant species on the boilers fouling on the basis of ash chemical composition. The indicators used for the analysis were as follows: boilers slagging, the tendency of fuel to form impurities, sintering and agglomeration. A significant variation in the content of alkalies was shown that cause the formation of sediment on the boilers heating surfaces. The smallest risk of heating boilers fouling is associated with perennial grasses incineration, especially the ones from the Miscanthus species that contain significant quantities of silicon monoxide, which is responsible for the heating surfaces erosion. The usage of polycarpic plants, such as Virginia mallow or Jerusalem artichoke, may cause pollution deposition and reduce the efficiency of boilers to the greatest degree. Because the biomass of different plant species exhibits the diversity of energy parameters and tendencies to foul boilers, there is a need to select the material to the combustion carefully. Moreover, blends of biomass raw materials (or biomass with coal) should be composed so that they are adapted to the boiler parameters and to the conditions of the combustion process.

Properties of miscanthus hydrochars obtained through wet torrefaction were studied. The process was carried out in three different temperatures – 180, 200 and 220 °C and with four different ratios of water to biomass – 3:1, 6:1, 12:1 and 16:1. The obtained solid products were characterized with respect to their fuel properties. The best results were obtained for the temperature of 220 °C and showed a noticeable improvement in fuel properties – especially grindability and lowered ash content. The influence of water to biomass ratio was not so explicit and while high ratio showed an improvement in all mentioned properties, low ratio allowed to achieve the highest energy yield. The results obtained for miscanthus wet torrefaction and the literature data for dry torrefaction were compared.

The article presents the results of studies of torrefied willow (Salix viminalis L.) compaction. Densification tests were performed using a hydraulic press with a maximum pressure of 216 MPa. The effect of basic parameters of the briquetting process (pressure and temperature) on mechanical parameters of manufactured briquettes were determined. On the basis of the research, it was found that the increase in pressure and temperature of the densification process increases the density and strength of pressed briquettes. The positive effect of temperature is particularly noticeable at lower pressing pressures (36 MPa – 72 MPa). In the case of a temperature of 300 C, the increase in a pressure from 144 MPa to 216 MPa resulted in the decrease in the density and strength of the briquette. It was also found that the briquettes manufactured at this temperature are characterized by lower density and strength than the briquettes obtained at a temperature of 200 oC.

Uniforming sugarcane management without any knowledge of soil variability could result in some parts of a sugarcane field receiving insufficient inputs, while other parts receive an excessive input. The research aimed at assessing the soil variability and sugarcane biomass along Ultisol toposequences in Central Lampung, Indonesia. Two sugarcane catenas and one forest catena were fully described in the fields. Soil horizons are represented by Ap/Ah/M, E, B, Cc and Cg with dominant clay translocation. The gleying symptom was found only in the lower slope to depression. The concretion depths can be used as an erosion indicator if the soil parent material is well characterized. Soil P has a maximum value of Ap horizon and decreases with the depth and no effect of internal erosion in the form of soil P accumulation in subsoils can be observed, except for the colluviated horizon. Kaolinite clay is dominantly found to buffer the changes in pH, except Ap horizon of sugarcane. The organic C depends on the pedogenesis and catena form. Al saturation indicates that the dominant soil weathering is intensive. Al saturation in the Ap horizon (Catena G1; G2) was reduced from 80% to 20–40% caused by liming and fertilization. The catena position was the main factor causing the increasing soil variability, which was responsible for the variability of sugarcane biomass. The sugarcane biomass increased with decreasing slopes. The highest biomass was found in the depression (105 tones/ha) if the sedimentation process is characterized by the formation horizon M and accompanied by the nutrient accumulation from the hilltops.

The mangrove ecological services as carbon sinks and storage are very useful in the efforts to mitigate global warming and climate change. In this study, the above and below-ground biomass, carbon stock, as well as carbon sequestration by the mangroves in Demta Bay, Papua Province, Indonesia were estimated. Allometric equations were used to determine the mangrove biomass in 36 observation plots. The biomass value was used to determine carbon stock and estimate carbon sequestration. Nine mangrove species were found in Demta Bay, with the contribution of mangrove species to biomass (AGB and BGB) in the following order: Rhizophora apiculata > Rhizophora mucronata > Bruguiera gymnorhiza > Bruguiera cylindrica > Heritiera Littoralis > Xylocarpus molucensis > Rhizophora stylosa > Avicennia marina > Sonneratia caseolaris. The average mangrove biomass was estimated at 174.20 ± 68.14 t/ha (AGB = 117.62 ± 45.68 t/ha and BGB = 56.58 ± 22.49 t/ha). The carbon stocks in mangroves at the Ambora site were higher than the Tarfia and Yougapsa sites, averaging 123.57 ± 30.49 t C/ha, 81.64 ± 25.29 t C/ha, and 56.09 ± 39.03 t C/ha, respectively. The average carbon stock in the mangrove ecosystem of Demta Bay is estimated at 87.10 ± 34.07 t C/ha or equivalent to 319.37 ± 124.92 t CO2 e/ha. The results of this study indicate that the mangrove ecosystem in Demta Bay stores quite high carbon stocks, so it is necessary to maintain it with sustainable management. Therefore, climate change mitigation is not only done by reducing the carbon emission levels but also needs to be balanced by maintaining the mangrove ecosystem services as carbon sinks and sequestration.

The autotrophic forms of microalgae are referred to as "efficient biological factories", because they play a significant role in CO2 removal from the atmosphere by utilizing it for the process of photosynthesis. The industrial application of microalgae biomass includes the production of cosmetics, health products, fertilisers, biofuel, feeds, and food. Microalgae biomass is also an important tool used in the treatment of wastewater. The current review is aimed at reviewing the progress and prospects of microalgae resource modelling and optimisation as a tool for sustainable biotechnology. The mechanism of biomass production by microalgae tends to vary according to whether the microalgae are autotrophic, heterotrophic, or mixotrophic organisms. In the current study, the modelling and optimisation of microalgae biomass production were discussed, as well as the modelling of CO2 sequestration, light intensity, nutrients, and photobioreactor. The role of microalgal biomass production in attaining sustainable biotechnology has also been extensively studied. Microalgae are an emerging tool used in the phycoremediation of wastewater and reduction of high CO2 level. The modelling and optimisation of microalgae biomass production will help to upscale the production of the microalgal based fuel and bioproducts from model scale to the money-making level.

The aim of this research was the analysis of the species composition and planktonic algae biomass in the ponds of Habsburg Park in Żywiec. So far, the urban park ponds have been rarely studied (especially in Poland) in this respect. The analyses of the park ponds water in Żywiec were conducted during the vegetation season in 2016, in monthly intervals. The phytoplankton biomass was calculated by comparing the shape of algae to geometrical figures and based on the chlorophyll a concentrations. The chlorophyll a concentrations and values of the planktonic algae biomass remained at a low level. The species composition showed the dominance of diatoms (i.a. Achnanthes lanceolate (Brébisson ex Kützing) Grun. in Cl. & Grun., Encyonema sp. (Kützing) Krammer). The highest values of the planktonic algae biomass were observed in the summer season. The ponds in the Habsburgs Park in Żywiec have great aesthetic and recreational values and therefore more frequent monitoring is necessary.

Composting produces several hundred different substances. Among them, active fragrance compounds constitute a considerable number. Composting technology and the method of conducting the process are important elements. Due to the different ways of conducting the composting process, there are also areas of odour emissions as well as the volume of emissions. Depending on whether the process is conducted statically or dynamically, in a natural or artificial way and also in an open (e.g. field prism) or closed system (reactors, containers, encapsulated plots), the amount of odourant emitted will be uneven. One of the methods is the use of biofiltration. The biological filter for air purification is designed to remove volatile air pollutants leaving various installations. By using a suitable filter bed, total organic and inorganic carbon, sulfur and nitrogen compounds such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide can be reduced. They are part of the odours that emerge, for example, from a composting plant. The use of biofilter eliminates polluting emissions, which in practice means reducing the negative impact on the environment and neutralizing odours. The article presents the results of biogas analysis generated in the composting process and ecological methods of removing odorants in the biofiltration process. Two types of filling were used to fill the biofilter. Both are fully biodegradable. It has been shown that these fillings have a high impact on the development of biofilm, and thus on the reduction of pollution.

Nowadays, much attention is paid to the elimination of heat sources poisoning our environment. The air pollution is the most dangerous form of pollution of the environment, due to its direct impact on all living organisms, coverage of large areas and easy movement of pollutants. Therefore, air protection is one of the priority directions of each voivodeship. Hence, many programmes are being developed to promote the replacement of the old heating devices with the new ones and the installation of renewable energy conversion devices. There is no doubt that the equipment which emits the most harmful compounds into the atmosphere includes the old boilers fired with coal, wood or wood chips. In winter, chimneys with black circular smoke are a frequent sight. This problem can only be solved by connecting houses to the public heating network or by removing the old stoves. In this publication, an analysis of the profitability of boiler replacement with coal was carried out in terms of the material and environmental benefits. It is proposed to replace this boiler with a pellet boiler, an eco-pea boiler and a gas condensing boiler. The boilers were selected on the basis of the calculated thermal output, which is equal to 18.56 kW.

In Ukraine, the problem of processing and utilization of sludge deposits that are formed during the treatment process at wastewater treatment plants is relevant. Unprocessed sewage sludge merges into overcrowded sludge sites every year, which leads to a deterioration of the environment and living conditions in Ukraine. Therefore, the aim of the work was to study the processing of sludge, the creation of pellets based on their composition with peat and biomass and their drying. The article presents the studies of drying kinetics of composite pellets based on peat, obsolete sludge and biomass on an experimental convective drying stand. The influence of the proportions of the components of the composition on the drying time was determined and the ratio at which the drying time of the pellets is shorter and the pellets are of better quality was selected. A comparison of the drying time of the sludgepeat composition and its components was performed, which shows that during the drying of the composite pellets, the intensification of the drying process is observed. The study related to the effect of the diameter of the pellets on the duration of drying showed that the duration of drying increases along with diameter. The presented comparison of drying kinetics of twoand three-component pellets shows the same nature of the drying curves and the drying time is in the range of 17-18 minutes. The optimal ratio of components for quality granulation was selected. The effective drying regimes of composite pellets based on silt deposits, peat and biomass were determined.

The communities of benthic macroinvertebrates, living in the estuary of Oued Souss (Agadir Bay, Morocco), were studied in parallel with the changes that this ecosystem had underwent after the stopping of pollution, caused by untreated wastewater discharge which occurred in November 2002. Three campaigns were undertaken during the summer season. Two of them were carried out while the estuary was receiving wastewater discharge in 2001 and 2002. The 2003 campaign was carried out after the cessation of the pollution. The intertidal macrobenthic fauna shows a similar faunal composition for both seasons during the period when the ecosystem was receiving wastewater discharge. During this period, Hydrobia ulvae was the dominant species, followed by Hediste diversicolor and Scrobicularia plana in decreasing order. In 2003, the number of individuals harvested was significantly larger compared to the period when the ecosystem received wastewater. For the dominance of species, H. diversicolor was dominanted, followed by H. ulvae, Cerastoderma edule, and S. plana in decreasing order. However, in both periods: before and after the end of wastewater discharge, the phylum of mollusks is dominant, followed by that of Annelids and Crustaceans. The study of the coenotic affinity between settlements of different radials allowed us to separate 2–3 groups of radials in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and 3 groups after stopping discharges in the estuary. The specific richness was greater in the year following the end of discharges (22 species in 2003 instead of 14 found during the pollution period: 2001–2002). The longitudinal distribution of the species living in this site in 2001 and 2002 became wider in 2003 and average biomass, determined by the study of the ash-free dry weight, became clearly greater (20.46 g/m2 in 2003; and 15.54 g/ m2 or 15.84 g/ m2 in 2001 or 2002 respectively). This investigation allowed us to acquire a qualitative (species list, species richness) and quantitative (abundance, biomass, species density) database of intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Oued Souss estuary. It represents a reference state. It responds to the requests for information about the quality of the environment immediately after the cessation of wastewater discharge and could serve as a basis for conducting impact studies later.

The article presents the results of a study on multiflora rose, one of the energy crop plants. The yield of aerial parts was determined in a field experiment, and the calorific value and chemical composition of the biomass were determined in laboratory tests. The results were used to calculate the amount of hard coal that can be replaced by multiflora rose biomass and the air pollution emissions from combustion of coal and multiflora rose. Combustion of multiflora rose biomass from an area of 1 ha in place of hard coal with equivalent energy value was found able to reduce emissions of SO2 by 98.9%, NO2 by 27.8%, particulates by over 18% and CO by 8.5%. The actual CO2 emissions from biomass combustion proved somewhat higher than in the case of coal; however, carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere during combustion of plant biomass is equal to the amount taken in by the plants during their growing period. Therefore the CO2 2 emissions are considered to be zero.
