Opis:
In this paper, we describe how several soft computing tools can be used to assist in high throughput screening of potential drug candidates. Individual small molecules (ligands) are assessed for their potential to bind to specific proteins (receptors). Committees of multilayer networks are used to classify protein-ligand complexes as good binders or bad binders, based on selected chemical descriptors. The novel aspects of this paper include the use of statistical analyses on the weights of single layer networks to select the appropriate descriptors, the use of Monte Carlo cross-validation to provide confidence measures of network performance (and also to identify problems in the data), the addition of new chemical descriptors to improve network accuracy, and the use of Self Organizing Maps to analyze the performance of the trained network and identify anomalies. We demonstrate the procedures on a large practical data set, and use them to discover a promising characteristic of the data. We also perform virtual screenings with the trained networks on a number of benchmark sets and analyze the results.

Opis:
The aim of this work is to create a web-based system that will assist its users in the cancer diagnosis process by means of automatic classification of cytological images obtained during fine needle aspiration biopsy. This paper contains a description of the study on the quality of the various algorithms used for the segmentation and classification of breast cancer malignancy. The object of the study is to classify the degree of malignancy of breast cancer cases from fine needle aspiration biopsy images into one of the two classes of malignancy, high or intermediate. For that purpose we have compared 3 segmentation methods: k-means, fuzzy c-means and watershed, and based on these segmentations we have constructed a 25–element feature vector. The feature vector was introduced as an input to 8 classifiers and their accuracy was checked. The results show that the highest classification accuracy of 89.02 % was recorded for the multilayer perceptron. Fuzzy c–means proved to be the most accurate segmentation algorithm, but at the same time it is the most computationally intensive among the three studied segmentation methods.

Opis:
In this work is presented a hybrid intelligent model of supervision based on Evolutionary Computation and Fuzzy Systems to improve the performance of the Oil Industry, which is used for Operational Diagnosis in petroleum wells based on the gas lift (GL) method. The model is composed by two parts: a Multilayer Fuzzy System to identify the operational scenarios in an oil well and a genetic algorithm to maximize the production of oil and minimize the flow of gas injection, based on the restrictions of the process and the operational cost of production. Additionally, the first layers of the Multilayer Fuzzy System have specific tasks: the detection of operational failures, and the identification of the rate of gas that the well requires for production. In this way, our hybrid intelligent model implements supervision and control tasks.

Opis:
This paper presents a medical application of the intelligent sensing and monitoring, a new lung tumor motion prediction method for tumor following radiation therapy. An essential core of the method is accurate estimation of complex fluctuation of time-varying periodical nature of lung tumor motion. Such estimation is achieved by using a novel multiple time-varying seasonal autoregressive (TVSAR) model in which several windows of different time-lengths are used to calculate correlation based fluctuation of periodic nature in the motion. The proposed method provides the prediction as a combination of those based on different window lengths. Multiple regression (MR), multilayer perceptron (MLP) and support vector regression (SVR) are used to combine and the prediction performances are evaluated by using clinical lung tumor motion. The proposed methods with the combined predictions showed high accurate prediction and are superior to the single different predictions. The average errors of MR, MLP, and SVR were 0.8455,0.8507, and 0.7530 mm at 0.5 s ahead, respectively. The results are clinically sufficient and thus clearly demonstrate that the proposed TVSAR with an appropriate combination method is useful for improving the prediction performance.

Opis:
In this paper, an intelligent approach to the Short-Term Wind Power Prediction (STWPP) problem is considered, with the use of various types of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). The impact of the prediction time horizon length on accuracy, and the influence of temperature on prediction effectiveness have been analyzed. Three types of DNNs have been implemented and tested, including: CNN (Convolutional Neural Networks), GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit), and H-MLP (Hierarchical Multilayer Perceptron). The DNN architectures are part of the Deep Learning Prediction (DLP) framework that is applied in the Deep Learning Power Prediction System (DLPPS). The system is trained based on data that comes from a real wind farm. This is significant because the prediction results strongly depend on weather conditions in specific locations. The results obtained from the proposed system, for the real data, are presented and compared. The best result has been achieved for the GRU network. The key advantage of the system is a high effectiveness prediction using a minimal subset of parameters. The prediction of wind power in wind farms is very important as wind power capacity has shown a rapid increase, and has become a promising source of renewable energies.
