Opis:
This study analyzed the factors affecting the level of commercialization among households owning cattle. The study was conducted at the Makhado Local Municipality of Vhembe District, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study sampled 150 households owning cattle from five villages within the municipality. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire that was administered face-to-face to the respondents. For empirical reasons, the study used two analytical techniques, namely; Household Comecialisation Index and Multinomial Logistic Regression Model. Empirical results reveal that eight variables were significant in affecting the level of commercialization among households owning cattle. These variables are the marital status of household head, the age of the household head, source of income, the occupation of household, access to market information, distance to the nearest market, membership to farmer organization, and land size. Based on the findings of the study, several policy recommendations were proposed, namely; Encouragement of youth participation in agriculture in general and in cattle production in particular, promotion of gender equality in decision-making, households’ farmer organization, encouragement of market-orientation in cattle production, and establishment of cattle input support programs (e.g., feed, water and disease control).

Opis:
African indigenous chickens (IC) though commonly kept by households in rural areas for consumption and sale, their contribution to rural livelihoods is generally overlooked. Literature suggests that IC production plays a vital role in rural communities of South Africa as an important source of animal protein and income. Despite these claimed benefits, production of indigenous chickens in Alice and other parts of South Africa’s rural areas is very low. This study used a cross-sectional survey of 120 households who keep IC in Alice communal area. The multivariate probit model was employed to investigate the factors that determine the choice of indigenous chicken owned by rural households. Results reveal that, gender, age, household size, association membership, access to formal markets, access to veterinary services, access to informal credit, access to formal credit and diversity score drive ownership of different indigenous chickens at household level. Thus far, the paper argues that, promotion of ownership of indigenous chicken at household level calls for strategic institutional alignment and a clear understanding of social demographic characteristics of the targeted community, which should be supported by several awareness campaigns and client based selection of indigenous chicken breeds of socio-economic importance to the household.

Opis:
The aim of the article was to present the food consumption in years 1999-2003. There was discussed the diversification of incomes and expenditures in particular quintile and social-economics groups as well as their influence on consumption size. It was mentioned that the incomes are less diverse in each group than in whole rural population. It was noticed that in groups of the lowest income the consumption size is not sufficient and often does not let satisfy all basic needs. It was affirmed that in the first quintile, the price for one good is usually lower than in the fifth quintile, which proves that goods purchased by poor people are generally of worse quality. Quantitative and qualitative consumption improvement may be caused by income increase of rural areas population.

Opis:
Enhancing rural agricultural productivity using proven technologies such as genetically modified (GM) maize production has many advantages as a pathway to economic development and poverty reduction. However, despite the global rise in GM maize and potential benefits of GM technology, the production rates and yields of smallholder farmers remain very low for reasons that are poorly understood. With this background, the aim of this study was to investigate the drivers of genetically modified (GM) maize awareness, participation, and intensity of production at the household level. Data were collected from 400 randomly selected respondents from Ngqushwa Local Municipality using a semi-structured questionnaire. Through a triple hurdle model, the study revealed that GM maize awareness is negatively influenced by age and female gender and positively influenced by married status, employment and number of years in school. Conditional on awareness of GM maize varieties, both participation and intensity of participation in GM maize production are positively influenced by land size, female gender, group membership, income and ownership of arable land and negatively influenced by employment. The study recommends that priority should be given to these socio-economic and institutional (group membership) factors by targeting GM maize awareness campaigns using platforms more suited to female-headed, older, less educated and unemployed rural farming households. The study also recommends addressing income, secure land ownership and access to large areas of land.

The study was conducted to analyse the food security status among agricultural households in Nkomazi Local Municipality, South Africa. The descriptive statistics, food security index and probit regression model were used to realise the objectives of the study. The majority of respondents were females. Furthermore, most respondents were aged between 61 and 70 years and had attained primary education level. Similarly, just under half had farming experience of more than 21 years and consisted of 6-10 household members. Although, most agricultural households in the study area were food secure, however food insecurity was very high. The marital status, education level of respondents and annual farm income were positively and significantly associated with food security. The majority of the farmers were old, had low levels of both education and farm income. Findings of this study highlight the level of food security in the study area and show that food insecurity levels amongst agricultural households was approximately twice the South African national household food insecurity. Findings presented here, provide a basis for formulation of a policy framework to help tackle the high food insecurity observed in the study area.

Inadequate consumption of nutritious food is still a challenge in most rural areas, as majority of households are in between jobs. This leads to rural households not having stable jobs and this affects their income, and it results to rural household not been able to acquire nutritious food as level of income is one of the major factors that influence households’ dietary diversity and dietary quality. The purpose of this study was to measure household food consumption pattern using Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS), with food groups over a recall period of seven days in rural household of Mopani District Municipality. The study estimated the determinants of rural household dietary diversity. The sample size of the study was 173 rural households, the sample size was determine using multi-stage sampling procedure and proportional random sampling as its sampling to select the rural households in Mopani district municipality. The descriptive statistics results indicated that majority of rural households have a high dietary diversity status and the average HDDS of food consumption was 80.75%. Regarding the regression results, household income, gender, level of education, access to a home garden and ownership of livestock suggested a positive influence of rural households in attaining high dietary diversity.

The notion that herder households only restrict their livelihood strategy to the rearing of livestock most often than not excludes the group from the right to access land for the agricultural activity they engage in. This study investigated the participation of herder households in sedentary agriculture (crop production) in Niger state, Nigeria. Findings from this study show that herder households in the study area are no longer strictly livestock keepers; they participate in crop production just like crop farmers who also combine the cultivation of crops with livestock keeping. The results also revealed that most herder households (66%) that engage in crop production cultivate cereals; other crops cultivated by herder households in the study area include tuber crops (22%) and vegetables. Regarding herder household farm outputs, most of the harvests are at the subsistence level, with the harvests ranging between 300 kg and 750 kg. Identified drivers of herder households’ participation in crop production include: duration of stay in a particular locality, increase in household size, economic motives (grain price), and reducing the dependence on crop farmers for food supply. Therefore, this study recommends that interest of herder households in cultivating crops be sustained and encouraged. The participation of herder households in crop production will enhance their own food security status in the first instance and throughout the area in general.

This study evaluates the impact of non-farm enterprises on the poverty status of rural farming households in Nigeria. The data were obtained from General Household Survey fielded by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2010/2011 and 2015/2016. However, only 1,619 matched observations were used for analyses, using Propensity Score Matching, Double Difference, Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty measures and Poverty Equivalent Growth Rates (PEGRs). The results show that 53.3% of participants lived below the poverty line (poor) in 2011, while in 2016, this proportion declined to 31.94%. The poverty incidence of female participants (0.5504) decreased by 53.68% while that of male participants (0.4112) decreased by 4.81%. If female participants had not participated in non-farm enterprises, their poverty would have been reduced by only 9.7% but due to participation, it was reduced by 53.68%. The Poverty Equivalent Growth Rates are higher for all the three FGT measures than the actual growth rates for all participants, males and females with females showing higher poverty reduction; which means that growth was propoor, although the poverty of the poor decreased more than that of the core poor. Also, after five years there is a decline in poverty incidences of participants across the six geopolitical zones and the decline was mostly felt in the North East (NE) followed by North Central (NC) while the least percentage decline was seen in North West (NW). Since participation in non-farm activities had a significant impact on the poverty of participants, the promotion of non-farm enterprises among poor farmers should be encouraged.

Food insecurity is quickly becoming a key topic in economic growth and development. The Nigerian food insecurity situation is deteriorating due to the frequent migration of energetic and able-bodied youth from rural to urban areas. Hence, this study examined the food security status before and after youth migration and assessed the impact of youth migration on farming household food security. A two-stage sampling technique was employed to obtain data from 240 respondents. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the food security index and binary logistic regression. The results revealed that most (86.3%) of the respondents were males with an average age of 48.5 years. The reasons behind youth migration are poor roads, the search for white-collar jobs and the laborious nature of farming. Furthermore, the average yield before and after youth migration was 1878.8 kg/ha and 885.9 kg/ha of grain equivalent, respectively. Moreover, 61.7% of households were food-secure while 38.3% were food-insecure before youth migration. Worse still, after youth migration, 70% of the households were food-insecure and 30% were food-secure. The variables determining the food security of a given area were the ratio of rural youth migrants to household size, crop yield difference, level of education, household size, food crop losses, the volumes of cereal, legume, and root and tuber crops consumed and access to remittances. Governments at all levels should provide basic infrastructural facilities in rural areas to encourage youth to stay home. Young people should also be made aware of the negative consequences of migration. Policies aimed at household size reduction should be implemented to increase household food security as well.

This study investigated the impact of credit access and cooperative membership on food security of rural households in Southwestern Nigeria. A multi stage sampling procedure was employed to select 300 rural households for the study. Data were analyzed using food security index, binary logit model, propensity score matching (PSM) and Augmented inverse probability weighting model (AIPW). Binary logit estimate reveals that age, household size, years of education, farm size, farm income and non-farm income significantly influenced the likelihood of rural households being members of cooperatives while household size, years of education, farm size, gender, asset and farm income significantly influenced the likelihood of rural households’ access to credit. Food security index revealed that about 66 percent of the households are food insecure. PSM revealed that cooperative membership and credit access is expected to increase the food security of rural households by approximately 1446 and 1496 kilocalories per person per day, respectively. AIPW revealed that cooperative membership and credit access is expected to increase the food security of rural households by approximately 1888 and 1899 kilocalories per person per day, respectively. The study concluded that credit access and cooperative membership has a positive and significant impact on food security of rural households. Thus, any programmes targeted at ensuring rural households’ food security, particularly southwest should take into cognizance their credit access and cooperative membership.

Suboptimal land management practices (SLM) are degrading soils and undermining food security. Despite this, there is scant information regarding households’ decision towards the effect of food security on SLM technologies. This paper, therefore, measured food security status and assessed the effect of food security on SLM technologies. Structured interview schedule was used to gather data for this study. A three-stage sampling procedure was employed for this study. Two out of the four ADP zones were randomly selected in the first stage. This was followed by a proportionate selection of 30 villages from the two selected zones. Lastly, ten farming households each, were picked randomly from the chosen villages to make up a sample size of 300 farming households. The result revealed that the calculated MPCFE was ₦4218.587 and the proportion of food secure and food insecure households are 37.7% and 62.3% respectively. The findings affirmed that much opportunities exist for increasing productivity and income through increased adoption of SLM technologies among the food insecure households when compared with their food secure counterparts. The R2 value of 29.8% suggests that the explanatory variables explained about 30% of the variation in the explained variable. Furthermore, the factors influencing SLM technologies of households are food security status, family size, monthly income and plot size. This study provides useful insight into policies and actions taken by farmers and government to mitigate the effects of suboptimal use of SLM technologies for improved production and food security. Policies favoring increased plot size should be vigorously pursued.

The purpose of this paper was to identify the factors influencing households to diversify rural on-farm livelihood activities in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. This is against a background where literature suggests low livelihoods diversification among rural households despite several claimed benefits of diversification. Cross-sectional survey data was randomly collected for this study in October 2018 from 190 rural households in Intsika Yethu Local Municipality. A structured questionnaire was used for that purpose. Ordered logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that diversification of on-farm livelihood activities was influenced by the gender of household head, education level of household head, household size, and number of livestock units owned. To promote on-farm livelihoods diversification in rural areas, the paper suggests targeting gender differential, informal education and awareness, labor dynamics associated with on-farm livelihood activities and household livestock units.

Although food is one of the basic necessities of life, food insecurity remains a major problem in Nigeria. This paper analyzes the factors influencing food security among rural households in Ogun State, Nigeria. Data were collected with multi-stage sampling procedure and analyzed with descriptive statistics and Probit regression model. The results show that mean age and household size of the respondents were 43years (std dev = 13.31) and 5 (std dev = 3.28) respectively. The mean per capita household expenditure per day was N113.57. Using two-third mean per capita expenditure as food security line, 70.1 percent of the households were food secure, while 36.7 percent were food secure with dollar per day per person food security line. Factors that contributed to food security status of the households at two-third mean per capita household expenditure and a dollar per day were dependency ratio, marital status, age, and income. It was recommended that in order to increase food security, rural dwellers should be encouraged to diversify their income sources, among others.
Zaleca się, aby w celu poprawy bezpieczeństwa żywnościowego zachęcać mieszkańców obszarów wiejskich m.in. do dywersyfikacji źródeł dochodu.

The most representative indicator of the households’ financial situation there was an assumed level of consumer spending. A comparative analysis of the self assessment was conducted, the consumer spending and the selected characteristics of households belonging to various socio-economic groups. The econometric analysis showed that there is a strong relationship between self-assessment of economic situation and the level of consumer spending of households. It should be emphasized, that there is a significant impact of the reference group (there was a socio-economic group) on the households self-assessment. In the study, econometrical and statistical analysis were used. The study was based primarily on the source of information coming from the panel study of household budgets conducted in the year 2013 by the GUS (Central Statistical Office) in Poland.
W badaniach zastosowano metody analizy statystycznej i modelowanie ekonometryczne. W artykule wykorzystano dane źródłowe z badań panelowych budżetów gospodarstw domowych w Polsce w 2013 r. prowadzonych przez GUS.
