Opis:
The concentrations of eight trace elements (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn) in the soil near a traffic way of Suzhou, Anhui province, China have been determined for the pollution assessment and source identification (along with quantification). The results indicate that Fe is the most abundant element followed by Mn, Zn, Cr, Pb, Cu, Co and As. These elements have low-medium coefficients of variation (0.059–0.293), indicating that some of them might have multisources. The combination of single pollution, geoaccumulation and the Nemerow composite indices suggest that the soils in this study are slightly polluted. Based on multivariate statistical analyses (including correlation, cluster and factor analyses), three sources responsible for the trace elemental concentrations in the soils have been identified, including geogenic, agricultural and traffic-related sources. Their mean contributions calculated based on the Unmix model are 35.9, 31.8 and 32.4%, respectively.

Opis:
The influence of sewage sludge doses and liming on the speciation of zinc in the soil has been investigated. For the highest dose of sludge, 15 wt. %, more than twofold increase in zinc content compared with the control has been observed. Based on sequential analysis of zinc content in sewage sludge, it was found that its concentration in the easily soluble and exchangeable fractions was low while it was the highest in the organic fraction. The concentration of zinc in selected soil fractions was dependent on the sludge dose and liming. In the first year of the experiment, zinc was mainly bound to organic matter and residual, while in the second year – to organic matter. In limed soil, much more zinc was bound to the residual fraction compared with the soil without liming.

Opis:
The fluctuations of heavy metal (Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn and Fe) concentrations and physicochemical parameters of water were studied for five fishponds located in the Matylda catchment affected by the former Pb and Zn ore mine in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region, southern Poland. Generally, metal concentrations in dissolved phase in pond water were low for most of the year, but their drastic increases were periodically observed (up to Cd 5.8, Pb 147.3, Zn 800.3, Mn 987.8, and Fe 2532.8 μg·dm–3). The factors determining metal concentrations in the pond water have been discussed.

Opis:
The effect of organic fertilization and microbiological preparations for phytostabilization of copper ore tailings were examined. It has been shown that the introduction of the pulp, waste from the sugar industry, leads to the mobilization of trace metals. The copper content in aqueous extract of enriched waste was greater than 500-fold higher than in controls. It has also been stated an increase in the toxicity of extracts. While the use of biopreparations for seed treatment contributed to the stimulation of nutrients uptake by plants. In the biomass of plants from treated seeds with a suspension of Azotobacter strain EK, and biosurfactant was found more phosphorus and calcium than in plants from control.

Opis:
The concentration, chemical composition, and mass closure of various fractions of ambient particulate matter (PM) were analyzed at crossroads and at a highway in Katowice (Poland). It was shown that at both sites organic carbon can constitute even 57% of the fine PM mass, about 20% of the fine PM mass can originate from the photochemical transformations of inorganic gaseous precursors, and that the coarse PM was mainly the organic matter (up to 39%) and crustal matter (up to 24%). Traffic emissions in Katowice can affect the formation of secondary aerosol (organic and inorganic), the contributions to PM and ambient concentrations of soil matter, NaCl, and trace elements. At the highway, the greatest impact on the concentrations and chemical composition of fine particles was probably due to exhaust emissions. At the crossroads, in the center of the city, the non-exhaust traffic emissions probably affected the coarse PM.
