Opis:
This paper deals with a colour modification method of poplar (Populus x euramericana cv. Pannonia) without any chemicals or stains. Steaming was found to be a proper modification method to change its natural greyish-white colour to a more attractive brown tint. Black locust and beech timber (as initiators) were steamed together with poplar timber to intensify its colour change. Treatment temperatures were 90 °C; 100 °C; 110 °C and 120 °C. Maximum duration of steaming was 20 days (9 days at 120 °C). The colour change of sapwood and heartwood was monitored separately using the CIE Lab colour system. A wide range of hues was created using this treatment method ranging from the initial colour to brown depending on the steaming time and temperature. The presence of black locust or beech wood facilitated the colour change of poplar only above 100°C. In terms of the colour alteration of different wood parts, these initiator species were more effective in the heartwood part than in sapwood. Chromophore molecules generating the yellowness increase did not prove to be stable at 120 °C. Higher treatment temperature tends to partly degrade these molecules resulting in reduced yellowness values.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the effect of liquid hot water pretreatment of fast-growing poplar wood in the context of bioethanol production. The milled Populus trichocarpa wood with a particle size of 0.43-1.02 mm was pretreated with liquid hot water method at temperatures range from 160ºC to 205ºC and then was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis. The glucose and xylose content in the hydrolyzates were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography. On the basis of results it was concluded, that increase of temperature in the hydrothermal pretreatment resulted in an increase of glucose and decrease of xylose content. However, increased temperature of the process led to inhibitor formation.

Opis:
Thermal modification is a treatment method used to improve some properties of wood in order to expand its range of usage and extend its lifetime. Although it generally causes a worsening of mechanical properties, some of them can change due especially to lower equilibrium moisture content when compared with untreated wood. Therefore, we wanted to compare some properties of thermally modified and untreated samples having either the same moisture contents or those of the area of use. For this purpose, we tested untreated and thermally modified (at 180° C for 3 hours) yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) solid wood samples. We investigated density, swelling and shrinkage ratios, and anisotropy of shrinkage as physical properties, and compression and bending strength, modulus of elasticity and impact bending as mechanical properties, according to the relevant ISO standards. The results showed that thermal modification increased the dimensional stability while having a negative impact on the mechanical properties (except modulus of elasticity) at the same moisture content, as indicated in the literature. However, thermally modified samples with moisture content as in the area of use exhibited improved properties (except in the case of impact bending).

Opis:
In the paper, three different physico-chemical pretreatment methods in relation to bioethanol production were compared. The wood of fast-growing poplar species (Populus deltoides x maximowiczii and Populus trichocarpa Torr. & A. Gray ex Hook) and corn stover were used as a feedstock. The chemical composition and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of the biomass before and after pretreatments were compared. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that the applied pretreatments changed the chemical composition of the raw materials. In the case of the acid and LHW (liquid hot water pretreatment) methods, up to 93.7% of hemicelluloses (especially pentosans) were removed. From among the selected pretreatment methods, the LHW and alkaline methods occurred to be the most interesting. Nevertheless, from the bioethanol production point of view, the LHW process of Populus deltoides x maximowiczii wood was the best because after enzymatic hydrolysis, high amounts of glucose (up to 600.9 mg/g pretreated biomass) and minor amounts of xylose (up to 37.9 mg/g pretreated biomass) were produced. Moreover, based on the chemical composition and sugar profile analysis, it was proved that the Populus trichocarpa wood also has a high potential for bioethanol production.
