Opis:
Plants of ‘Catawbiense Boursault’ and ‘Eskimo’ rhododendrons or ‘Cannon’s Double’ and ‘Kilian’ azalea grown in 4 l containers were treated twice with chlormequat (2000, 4000 and 8000 mg · dm-3), trinexapac-ethyl (50, 100, 200, 400 mg · dm-3), daminozide (2500, 5000, 7500 mg · dm-3), proxeadione calcium (75, 150, 300 mg · dm-1) and once with paclobutrazol (50, 100, 200, 400 mg · dm-3). Shoot length of the subsequent growth flush following the treatments decreased with increasing rates of the growth retardants. The number of flower buds per plant increased with increasing rates of pacloburazol, chlormequat and daminozide. Prohexadione calcium was less effective in flower bud initiation and the worst results were obtained with trinexapac-ethyl.

Opis:
Popular in the urban environment is the horse chestnut, Aesculus hippocastanum which is suffering mainly due to the feeding of the horse chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella). The harmfulness of this pest is well recognized. Not much attention was put in discovering the interaction of this insect with the fungal pathogen Guignardia aesuli, the agent of leaf blotch. Host plant mediation in this particular insect-plant pathogen interaction is crucial for understanding the complexity of the horse chestnut’s current and future situation. Recognising the response of the host plant for separated and simultaneous colonisation by insect and fungus was the aim of this study. Leaf damage dynamics and phenolic compounds content (total soluble phenolic compounds – TPh, and condensed tannins – CT), and stem volume increment (SVI) of the horse chestnut saplings was considered and their relationship identified. The main hypothesis was that insect feeding and fungal infection when separated elicit a similar pattern in defence response of the host but this defence response is different when they both coexist on the same plant. Basing on crown projection area photographs sequence, foliage damage dynamics was assessed (Richard’s growth model) and protocol developed. Measurements of stem volume were performed sequentially to indicate potential growth response. Through this study, it was identified that the content of phenolic compounds in leaves was higher when both pests colonized saplings in comparison with those where saplings were infested by one biotic factor. It is also documented that foliage damage dynamics was higher when only the fungal pathogen attacked plants than when it was infected by both pests. A trade-off was identified between growth and secondary metabolism. Leaf damage affected stem volume increment only in the late summer, when a high level of defoliation was observed. Simultaneous infestation by fungal and insect agents made unfavourable conditions rather for the former. How this interaction affects the latter is not covered by our results and still remains undiscovered.

Effects of 62 isolates (of 41 taxa) of fungi on growth of 1-year-old oak (Quercus robur) seedlings were studied in an inoculation experiment. The fungi were isolated from roots of 80–96-year-old Q. robur that had been subjected to periodic flooding and had symptoms of oak decline. The fungal genera included Alternaria, Aspergillus, Calonectria, Chaetomium, Cladosporium, Clonostachys, Corynespora, Cylindrocarpon, Dicyma, Geotrichum, Ilyonectria, Isaria, Metarhizium, Oidiodendron, Ophiostoma, Pezicula, Phialocephala, Phialophora, Pyrenochaeta, Sporendocladia, Sporothrix, Thelonectria, Trichoderma and Trimmatostroma. Mycelial colonies of fungi growing in potato-dextrose broth were used for soil inoculation. Plant growth was assessed 2 years after inoculation, when the plants were 3 years old. Stem lengths, and dry weights of stems, roots and leaves were measured. Stem growth was inhibited by 31 isolates (50%) and root growth by 12 isolates (19%). Stem growth was stimulated by two isolates (3%) and root growth by 17 isolates (27%). The overall ratio of inhibitors to stimulants was 2.1. The proportion of taxa that inhibited stem growth was 16 times greater than that which promoted stem growth. The proportion of taxa that promoted root growth was only 1.5 times greater than that which inhibited root growth. The structure of the fungal communities in periodically flooded oak forests suggests that they are more likely to inhibit than to promote vigour in oaks.

Calycanthus fertilis Walt. is a shrub belonging to the family Calycanthaceae, has great potential as ornamental. In the literature there are no reports on methodpropagation of this shrub in in vitro cultures. Therefore, the aim of this study was a development of the method micropropagation of Calycanthus fertilis Walter. Shoot explants of the size 1 cm, with an apex or node with lateral meristems were placed on the media with mineral composition according to MS and WPM supplemented with BAP (from 0.5 to 2.0 mg·dm–3) and TDZ (from 0.1 to 0.5 mg·dm–3). BAP turnedout to significantly increase initiation frequency whereas TDZ inhibitedthe formation of adventitious shoots andcausedexplant death. The highest percentage of initiated explants were found in shoot fragments placed on WPM medium supplemented with 1.0 mg·dm–3 BAP. Primary explants which initiatedgrowth were transferredon the proliferation media containing WPM macroand microelement, with the addition of different cytokinin: BAP (from 0.5 to 2.5 mg·dm–3), KIN (1.0 to 5.0 mg·dm–3) or TDZ (from 0.1 to 0.5 mg·dm–3). Calycanthus multiplication in vitro shouldbe conductedon WPM media with 1.0 mg·dm–3 BAP. Proliferatedshoots were placedon the WPM rooting medium supplemented with auxins: IBA, IAA or NAA at the concentration from 0.1 to 2.0 mg·dm–3. Maximum rooting was obtained on WPM medium supplemented with 0.5 mg·dm–3 IBA. To sum up, it shouldbe statedthat an efficient method of micropropagation of Calycanthus fertilis Walt. has been developed.

The height growth dynamics of three interspecific crosses with Greek fir (Abies cephalonica Loud.) acting as mother and a control variant from self-pollination were followed throughout a period of 30 years. The hybrid combination A. cephalonica × A. nordmanniana exhibited enhanced growth relative to the selfed control at stage of 4-year old seedlings already, whereas the hybrid A. cephalonica × A. alba only at stage of 9-year old saplings. At age of 30, the heterotic growth persisted only in the latter, the hybrid A. cephalonica × A.nordmanniana was comparable in height growth parameters with a selfed control. The interspecific cross A. cephalonica × A. numidica was remarkable by its accelerated growth during early stages of the development. At age of 4 years it has surpassed in height growth both A. cephalonica × A. alba and control but has declined profoundly during subsequent stages of its development. A conspicuous feature of the hybrid needle anatomy were abundant resin canals and reduced size of some anatomical traits of its needles. In spite of variable growth potentials, all the three interspecific hybrids are recommended for planting in Slovakia, especially at densely polluted areas where domestic silver fir cannot withstand emission pressure.

Plant breeders have focused much attention on polyploid trees because of their resistance for forestry. To evaluate the impact of intraspecies genome duplication on NaHCO3 stress, a series of Betula platyphylla autotetraploids and diploids were generated from the same family. The growth, proline content and proline-associated gene expression of these autotetraploid individuals were compared with those diploid trees. Autotetraploids were superior in injury index and relative growth of height and base diameter compared to diploids. The proline content was higher in autotetraploid individuals compared to diploids. Gene expression data revealed autotetraploids were generally higher expression in BpP5CS1, BpP5CS2, Bp- P5CR1, BpP5CR2, BpP5CR3 and BpOAT and were lower expression in BpProDH and BpP5CDH compared to diploid trees. These results shed light on resistance variation in birch autotetraploidization and polyploidy breeding as a new approach for genetic improvement of birch trees.

Increasing levels of atmospheric nitrogen deposition have greatly affected forest trees. Acer truncatum Bunge has a large distribution in northern China, Korea and Japan and plays an important ecological role in forest ecosystems. We investigated the responses of A. truncatum to a broad range of nitrogen addition regimes with a focus on seedling growth, biomass partitioning, leaf morphology, gas exchange physiology and chlorophyll fluorescence physiology. Moderate nitrogen addition promoted shoot height, stem diameter at ground height, total biomass, size of leaves and chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange performance, whereas extreme level of nitrogen addition did not result in such facilitation. Chlorophyll content, pattern of biomass partitioning, ratio of leaf length to width, leaf water content, and specific leaf area did not change among the addition regimes. The critical amount of nitrogen deposition should be defined in the context of a certain time period in a particular region for a certain species at a special developmental stage. The critical amount of N deposition that weakens total biomass facilitation in A. truncatum planted in mixed soil of yellow cinnamon soil and humic soil is approximately 10 g N m−2 y−1 during the first growing season.

Five plots with young beech trees of the same age (13–15 years) were established to study the threshold, where plagiotropic growth becomes evident as the consequence of the reduced light intensity. Trees were equally distributed along the light gradient and were divided according to light conditions (Indirect Site Factor, ISF) into three groups of stand conditions: close canopy stand (ISF<20), edge (2025). Morphological and physiological responses of young beech were studied between managed and old growth forest and between different forest complexes (Pohorje and Kocevje region) on natural beech sites. Criteria for the plagiotrophic growth was the relation between tree length and tree height (l/h) under various light conditions. Under controlled conditions (temperature, flow and CO2 concentration, RH, light intensity) light saturation curves of leaf net photosynthesis were measured on same trees to compare both responses between different light categories and different plots within comparable light conditions. Our study confirmed different thresholds for morphologic response between two forest complexes as well as between old growth and managed forest. Results were in accordance with physiological responses: the value of limiting light for a plagiotropic response was lower in Kocevje (17% ISF) than on Pohorje (25% ISF).

Opis:
Little dendroclimatic research has been conducted on species of Podocarpus, in response to inherent difficulties associated with tree-ring differentiation and cross-dating. We sampled complete stem cross sections from a plantation of Podocarpus salignus trees in Valdivia, Chile, near the southern edge of the species’ range. We measured earlywood, latewood, and total ring widths avoiding ring wedging, and we calculated the corresponding chronologies. The relationship of these chronologies with maximum temperature, precipitation, and sea level pressure was addressed using correlation and redundancy analyses. All chronologies showed a similar response to climate that was consistent with the cloudy, rainy, and temperate conditions of the study area. That is, warm and dry conditions during previous late springs were beneficial, while warm and rainy winters under low atmospheric pressures were detrimental for growth. The observed climatic responses are in contrast to those of conifers from mountainous areas of southern South America. Limitation of carbohydrates available for growth in the following active season was a possible cause for the observed responses to climate. That is, high winter temperatures may deplete stored carbohydrates by increasing respiration, and a high degree of cloud cover reduces the radiation received by the trees in the active season, which may hamper photosynthesis. Our work highlights the dendroclimatological value of Podocarpus salignus to investigate the influence of climatic variation on tree growth and forest productivity.

The main objective of the study was to evaluate inter-annual ring-width variation and cumulative growth of aspen (Populus tremula L.) trees growing on the spots of different soil CO2 concentration at natural mofette site. We hypothesized that growth rate of trees is affected by CO2 concentration within their rooting zone. The study site was situated in the flood plain of Plesná stream near Hartoušov (Western Bohemia). Trees growing in a pure aspen stand were selected according to the CO2-gas regime within their rooting zone. Five high [CO2] trees (10–25% CO2 in the soil) and five low [CO2] trees (up to 3% CO2 in the soil) were sampled. Stem growth analysis of each trunk was carried out to study growth pattern in detail. High and low [CO2] trees significantly differed in a growth rate. At the age of 25 years, the basal area of high [CO2] trees exceeded low [CO2] trees by 39 %. The positive effect of CO2 on annual increment was pronounced particularly in the years with optimal growing conditions. Results suggest that trees can be fertilized not only by elevated atmospheric CO2 but also when fed with CO2 via the roots.

During one vegetative season, the growth and the development of the leaf blades of Tatarian maple (Acer tataricum L.) from heavily polluted area has been studied. The region under investigation was contaminated mainly with SO2, NxOx, Pb, Zn, and Cu etc. The aim of the study was to compare the growth and the development of the leaf blades of Acer tataricum L. (Tatarian maple) from polluted field with those from non-polluted. Base on this to assess its tolerance to polluted conditions of the atmosphere, as well as to look for adaptive responses. The conducted study registered shorter time of the vegetative growth of the leaf blades in the commencement stages of the vegetative development. The leaves from polluted site had emergence approximately two weeks earlier compared with these from the control area. Faster linear growth of the leaf surfaces in the commencement stages of the development had been noted for the trees from polluted field. The spongy mesophyll had been reduced, as well as the common thickness of the leaf blades of the tree plants from the contaminated region. The observed changes are regarded as adaptation of the plant to the polluted environment, i.e. as tolerance.

The subject of the study was a dynamic population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in Forest District Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals. The spatial structure of population and some basic individual traits of trees were recorded, then the growing space of individual trees was examined. The following measures of tree growing space were investigated: crown diameter and projection area, and tree volume. The spatial structure of population was non-random, and there was evidence for effects of population density on tree performance. The observations have to be continued in order to describe optimal growing space of wild service tree; the results could be used to improve in situ conservation of this rare and valuable species.

The paper presents the results of research on the genetic variability in the growth characteristics and plasticity of Polish provenances of Norway spruce, tested on thirty plots established in Europe and Canada in the IUFRO 1972 provenance experiment. Special consideration was devoted to the plots in Poland, especially in Knyszyn. The variability in the growth and quality characteristics of the provenances, found at experiment level, is high (within 6.099 standard deviation units). At provenance level, it ranges between 4.674 for Kartuzy and 2.192 for Rycerka Zwardoń. This indicates that the performance of the provenances depends much on environmental conditions. Although no provenance can be considered adaptable to any conditions thatmay occur in the cultivation of spruce, the Istebna Bukowiec and Zwierzyniec Lubelski provenances, having a very high breeding value and high plasticity, may be recommended for a wider use in reforestation.

Opis:
Increased nitrogen deposition and biological invasions may be two crucial consequences of global change. Exotic plants often have adverse effects on native plants. However, there are reports of occasional positive interaction between them. Increased nitrogen deposition enhances nitrogen availability in soil, which may facilitate the growth of some exotic plant and decrease the competitive advantage of native plants because of their adaptation to low-nutrient environments. Consequently, increased nitrogen deposition may regulate the relationship between exotic and native plants. A greenhouse experiment was, thus, conducted to examine the effects of increased nitrogen deposition on the relationship between the native Quercus acutissima and the exotic Robinia pseudoacacia, which are both widely distributed in North China. Seedlings of both species were grown in monoculture and mixture arrangements in a pot experiment with different nitrogen addition levels (i.e., 0, 2, 5, and 10 g N m–2 a–1). Nitrogen addition altered the biomass partitioning of Q. acutissima and R. pseudoacacia seedlings, with more biomass allocated to leaves and less to roots. Although R. pseudoacacia seedlings always had growth predominance over Q. acutissima seedlings, Q. acutissima was not threatened by R. pseudoacacia at the four levels of nitrogen addition during the three-month duration of the experiment. A positive interaction between the seedlings of R. pseudoacacia and Q. acutissima was found, and increased nitrogen deposition did not affect the positive interaction. Further studies are necessary to determine whether or not R. pseudoacacia is harmful to native ecosystems and should be limited for forestation in North China.

Provenance trials with forest trees provide valuable information about growth and adaptability of populations often transferred over large geographical and climatic distances. In this study we evaluated growth and survival of 19 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations representing most of the natural range of the species in Europe, growing in a 30-year-old provenance trial in the northeastern Poland. We used cluster analysis to investigate differentiation among those populations in growth and survival. We also used published data on needle morphology and allozyme and DNA marker variation for those same populations to compare groupings of populations based on growth and needle traits and markers. We found significant variation among tested populations in all investigated traits – the largest variation was found for stand volume which integrates information on growth and survival. Variation in growth traits was related to the latitude of population origin with populations from the latitudinal band between 49° N and 54° N showing the best performance. Populations originating from both north and south off of that region showed lower productivity, which for southern provenances resulted from their particularly low survival, reflecting the lack of adaptation to the environment of the research site. Grouping of populations based on growth traits revealed three clusters corresponding to the three latitudinal regions – northern, central and southern. Needle morphological traits were not appropriate as markers of productivity. Clustering of populations based on needle morphology, and especially based on biochemical and molecular markers, did not correspond to the grouping based on growth traits.
