Opis:
Results are presented for optimal layout of materials in the spatial and temporal domains for a ID structure subjected to transient wave propagation. A general optimization procedure is outlined including derivation of design sensitivities for the case when the mass density and stiffness vary in time. The outlined optimization procedure is exemplified on a ID wave propagation problem in which a single gaussian pulse is compressed when propagating through the optimized structure. Special emphasis is put on the use of a time-discontinuous Galerkin integration scheme that facilitates analysis of a system with a time-varying mass matrix.

Opis:
This contribution concerns the modelling of fuzzy information in geographic databases. For this purpose, fuzzy regions and fuzzy points have been defined in the past, along with a number of suitable operations. For numerical information - such as the surface area of fuzzy regions, or the distance between fuzzy regions and/or fuzzy points - the computation depends on the interpretation given to the fuzzy regions or points. Consequently, it is important to differentiate between the interpretation in order to obtain correct results. This article explains in detail the impact of the interpretation in terms of both the surface area and the distance.

Opis:
We consider elliptic problems on graphs under given loads and bilateral contact conditions. We ask the question: which graph is best suited to sustain the loads and the constraints. More precisely, given a cost function we may look at a multiple node of the graph with edge degree q and ask as to whether that node should be resolved into a number of nodes of edge degree less than q, in order to decrease the cost. With this question in mind, we are looking into the sensitivity analysis of a graph carrying a second order elliptic equation with respect to changing its topology by releasing nodes with high edge degree or including an edge. With the machinery at hand developed here, we are in the position to define the topological gradient of an elliptic problem on a graph.

This paper deals with recent, developments of topology optimization techniques for application in some new types of design problems. The emphasis is on recent work of the Danish research groups at Aalborg University and at the Technical University of Denmark and focus is on the central role that the choice of objective functions and design parameterization plays for a successful extension of the material distribution approach to new design settings and to new types of physics models. The applications that will be outlined encompass design of laminated composite structures, design for pressure loads, design in fluids, design in acoustics, and design in photonics. A short outline of other design optimization activities is also given.

The paper can be considered as a complement to previous papers of the authors. An insight into applied asymptotic analysis of boundary value problems in singularly perturbed domains is presented. As a result, the asymptotic expansions of eigenvalues are obtained and discussed in terms of integral attributes of the geometrical perturbations including the virtual mass tensor, polarization tensor etc. The results are presented in such a way that can be easily employed in numerical methods for shape optimization and inverse problems.

Opis:
In the present paper, a new approach for structural topology optimization based on dynamic implicit surface function (DISF) is proposed. DISF is used to describe the shape/topology of a structure, which is approximated in terms of the nodal values. Then, a relationship is established between the element stiffness and the values of the implicit surface function on its four nodes. In this way and with some non-local treatments of the design sensitivities, not only the shape derivative but also the topological derivative of the optimal design can be incorporated in the numerical algorithm in a unified way. Numerical experiments demonstrate that by employing this approach, the computational efforts associated with DISF (and level set) based algorithms can be diminished. Clear optimal topologies and smooth structural boundaries free from any sign of numerical instability can be obtained simultaneously and efficiently.

Opis:
A numerical coupling of two recent methods in shape and topology optimization of structures is proposed. On the one hand, the level set method, based on the classical shape derivative, is known to easily handle boundary propagation with topological changes. However, in practice it does not allow for the nucleation of new holes (at least in 2-d). On the other hand, the bubble or topological gradient method is precisely designed for introducing new holes in the optimization process. Therefore, the coupling of these two method yields an efficient, algorithm which can escape from local minima in a given topological class of shapes. Both methods rely on the notion of gradient computed through an adjoint analysis, and have a low CPU cost since they capture a shape on a fixed Eulerian mesh. The main advantage of our coupled algorithm is to make the resulting optimal design largely independent of the initial guess.

Opis:
The paper presents an approach to detecting dependence of a decision-maker's actions (or decisions) on conditions with respect to a certain type of fuzzy rules, namely gradual rules. Gradual rules are of the form "the more c is C, the more d is D", where C and D are L-fuzzy sets on the domain of the attributes c and d with membership values possibly in different lattices, respectively. The decision-maker's actions and conditions for those are found in a data base-like system, called an information system. We use the information system to define relations corresponding to L-fuzzy sets, and we define weakening modifiers by these relations. These modifiers are closure operators in the corresponding topologies, and we can define fineness relation between L-fuzzy sets. This relation is useful when comparing different decision-maker's actions. We define strong degree and topological degree of depedence of the attributes (with respect to a gradual rule), and we study some properties of those. Finally, we present a small application.

Opis:
A framework for descent algorithms using shape as well as topological sensitivity information is introduced. The concept of gradient-related descent velocities in shape optimization is defined, a corresponding algorithmic approach is developed, and a convergence analysis is provided. It is shown that for a particular choice of the bilinear form involved in the definition of gradient-related directions a shape Newton method can be obtain. The level set methodology is used for representing and updating the geometry during the iterations. In order to include topological changes in addition to merging and splitting of existing geometries, a descent algorithm based on topological sensitivity is proposed. The overall method utilizes the shape sensitivity and topological sensitivity based methods in a serial fashion. Finally, numerical results are presented.
