Opis:
Resource allocation problems are concerned with the allocation of limited resources among competing activities so as to achieve the best performances. However, in systems which serve many users there is a need to respect some fairness rules while looking for the overall efficiency. The so-called Max-Min Fairness is widely used to meet these goals. However, allocating the resource to optimize the worst performance may cause dramatic worsening of the overall system efficiency. Therefore, several other fair allocation schemes are being considered and analyzed. In this paper we show how the concepts of multiple criteria equitable optimization can effectively be used to generate various fair and efficient allocation schemes. First, we demonstrate how the scalar inequality measures can be consistently used in bicriteria models to search for fair and efficient allocations. Further, two alternative multiple criteria models equivalent to equitable optimization are introduced, thus allowing to generate a larger variety of fair and efficient resource allocation schemes.

Opis:
We discuss some aspects of similarity measures in the context of Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs, for short). IFSs, proposed in 1983, are a relatively new tool for the modeling and simulation and, because of their construction, present us with new challenges as far the similarity measures are concerned. Specifically, we claim that the distances alone are not a proper measure of similarity for the IFSs. We stress the role of a lack of knowledge concerning elements (options, decisions, etc.) and point out the role of the opposing (complementing) elements. We also pay attention to the fact that it is not justified to talk about similarity when one has not enough knowledge about the compared objects/elements. Some novel measures of similarity are presented.

Opis:
Laser beam welding (LBW) is a remarkable method for combining dissimilar materials, primarily when the unique amalgamation of metals is necessary. LBW, owing to attractive features, namely: low heat input, high heat concentration, high power density and low distortion is one of the more advantageous methods for, e.g., welding and repair of aircraft and turbine engine elements, constructed from superalloy. In this paper, the literature is scrutinized on diverse techniques that are associated with laser welding systems. The review is provided of several dozen research articles, involving an appropriate analysis. Initially, the analysis depicts various schemes that are contributed in different articles. Subsequently, the analysis also focuses on various particular features such as laser beam width and type of laser, and it also considers the heat treatment analysis that is contained in each of the articles reviewed. Furthermore, the present paper provides a detailed study regarding the performance measures and maximum performance achievements regarding each contribution accounted for. Finally, it indicates the various research issues, which can be useful for the researchers to carry out further research on laser welding systems. Of particular interest to the Readers of this journal is the fact of ample application of modelling, identification, data processing, image processing and AI tools in the respective surveyed studies.

Opis:
A double-well energy expressed as a minimum of two quadratic functions, called phase energies, is studied taking into account minimization of the corresponding integral functional. Such integral, as being not sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous, does not admit classical minimizers. To derive the relaxation formula for the infimum, the appropriate minimizing sequence is constructed. It consists of solutions of some approximating convex problems involving characteristic functions related to the phase energies. The weak limit of this sequence and the weak limit of the sequence of solutions of dual problems combined with the weak-star limits of the characteristic functions related to the phase energies allow to establish the final relaxation formula. It is also shown that infimum can be expressed by the Young measure associated with constructed minimizing sequence. An explicit form of Young measure in some regions of the involved domain is calculated.

A general form of the dynamics obtained as a limit of trajectories of singularly perturbed linear control systems is presented. The limit trajectories are described in terms of probability measure-valued maps. This allows to determine the extent to which the bang-bang principle for linear control systems is carried over to the singular limit.

Opis:
Statistical approach to Control Performance Assessment (CPA) is of great practical importance. This is particularly visible in process industry, where there are many PID loops. They are often assessed with measures derived from the Gaussian probabilistic density function. Standard deviation, variance, skewness or kurtosis form the majority of applied indexes. The review of data originating from process industry shows, however, to the contrary, that these signals have rather non-Gaussian properties and are mostly characterized by fat-tailed distribution disable the ability. Investigations show that strong disturbances may significantly disable the capacity of proper assessment. Standard measures often fail in such cases. It is shown that non-Gaussian measures can help with this problem. Various disturbances are tested and compared. Results show that fat-tailed distributions are an interesting alternative. They are less sensitive to disturbance shadowing and still make possible loop dynamic assessment.

The aim of this paper is to present bond portfolio immunization strategies in the case of multiple liabilities, based on single-risk or multiple-risk measure models under the assumption of multiple shocks in the term structure of interest rates referring, in particular, to Fong and Vasicek (1984), Nawalkha and Chambers (1996), Balbas and Ibanez (1998) and Hurlimann (2002). Immunization problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem under a fixed open loop strategy. New risk measures associated with changes of the term structure are also defined.

Opis:
A discrete-time stochastic control problem for general (nonlinear in state, control, observation and noise) models is considered. The same noise can enter into the state and into the observation equations, and the state/observation does not need to be affine with respect to the noise. Under mild assumptions the joint distribution function of the state/observation processes is obtained and used for computing the Gateaux and Frechet derivatives of the cost function. Under partial observation the control actions are restricted by the measurability requirement and we compute the Lagrange multiplier associated with this "information constraint". The multiplier is called a "dual", or "shadow" price, and in the literature of the subject is interpreted as an incremental value of information . The present and the future are two factors appearing in the multiplier and we study how they are balanced as time goes on. An algorithm for computing extremal controls in the spirit of R. Rishel (1985) is also obtained.

Opis:
An optimal control problem with a state constraint of inequality type and with dynamics described by a semilinear hyperbolic equation in divergence form with the non-homogeneous boundary condition of the third kind is considered. The state constraint contains a functional parameter that belongs to the class of continuous functions and occurs as an additive term. We study the properties of solutions of linear hyperbolic equations in divergence form with measures in the original data and compute the first variations of functionals on the basis of a so-called two-parameter needle variation of controls. We consider the necessary conditions for minimizing sequences in an optimal control problem with a pointwise in time state constraint of inequality type and with dynamics described by a semilinear hyperbolic equation in divergence form with the non-homogeneous boundary condition of the third kind. For the parametric optimization problem, we also consider regularity and normality conditions stipulated by the differential properties of its value function.
