Opis:
This paper investigates a control structure to enhance the DC fault ride-through capability of a full-bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC) station, while ensuring a stable controlled operation as a STATCOM during DC faults without the need for fault isolation. Taking advantage of the switching states of a full-bridge submodule, a DC current controller is proposed, which provides the DC voltage reference for the modulation when a DC fault is detected. By changing the outer controllers strategy from DC voltage or active power control to converter energy control during a fault, the decoupling of the converter operation from the DC side dynamics is realized. In this paper, the focus is on the control methodology at all times of operation and the evaluation of the STATCOM control during a fault. To this end, extensive simulations were performed on a three-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid in radial configuration and a pole-to-pole DC fault case was investigated. The results showed that the AC voltage and current were controlled within limits at all times, while the full-bridge MMC was able to provide reactive power support to the AC grid. Moreover, using the proposed control methodology, the transients at the operation transition points between STATCOM and inverter/rectifier operation were minimized and the stations were able to safely ride through the fault.

Opis:
An enhancement to the previously developed repetitive neurocontroller (RNC) is discussed and investigated in the paper. Originally, the time-base generator (TBG) has been used to produce the only input signal for the neural approximator. The resulting search space makes the dynamic optimization problem (DOP) of shaping the control signal solvable with the help of a function approximator such as the feed-forward neural network (FFNN). The plant under consideration, i.e. a constant-amplitude constant-frequency voltage-source inverter (CACF VSI) with an output LC filter, is assumed to be equipped with the disturbance load current sensor to enable implementation of the disturbance feed-forward (pDFF) path as a part of the non-repetitive subsystem acting in the along the pass p-direction. An investigation has been undertaken to explore potential benefits of using this signal also as an additional input for the RNC to augment the approximation space and potentially enhance the convergence rate of the real-time search process. It is numerically demonstrated in the paper that the disturbance feed-forward path active in the pass-to-pass k-direction (kDFF) improves the dynamics of the repetitive part as well indeed.

Opis:
Continuous development of intelligent network applications drives the demand for deployment-ready hardware and software solutions. Such solutions are highly valued not only by distributed producers of energy but by energy consumers as well. The use of intelligent network applications enables the development and improvement of the quality of services. It also increases self-sufficiency and efficiency. This paper describes an example of such device that allows for the control of a dual active bridge (DAB) converter and enables its remote control in real time over an IP-based network. The details of both hardware and software components of proposed implementation are provided. The DAB converter gives a possibility to control and manage the energy between two DC power systems with very different voltage levels. Not only information, but also the quality of energy, the direction of power flow, and energy storage systems can be easily controlled through an IP-based network and power electronics converters. Information technology, together with intelligent control of power electronics technology, provides a flexible solution, especially for sustainable smart grids.

Opis:
This paper presents the control design framework for the hybrid synchronization (HS) and parameter identification of the 3-Cell Cellular Neural Network. The cellular neural network (CNN) of this kind has increasing practical importance but due to its strong chaotic behavior and the presence of uncertain parameters make it difficult to design a smooth control framework. Sliding mode control (SMC) is very helpful for this kind of environment where the systems are nonlinear and have uncertain parameters and bounded disturbances. However, conventional SMC offers a dangerous chattering phenomenon, which is not acceptable in this scenario. To get chattering-free control, smooth higher-order SMC formulated on the smooth super twisting algorithm (SSTA) is proposed in this article. The stability of the sliding surface is ensured by the Lyapunov stability theory. The convergence of the error system to zero yields hybrid synchronization and the unknown parameters are computed adaptively. Finally, the results of the proposed control technique are compared with the adaptive integral sliding mode control (AISMC). Numerical simulation results validate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Opis:
The permanent magnet in-wheel motor (PMIWM) is a nonlinear, multivariable, strongly coupled and highly complex system. The key to the development and application of the PMIWM consists in the improvement of its control accuracy and dynamic performance. In order to effectively decouple the PMIWM, this paper presents a novel internal model control (IMC) approach based on the back-propagation neural network inverse (BPNNI) control method. First, theoretical analysis is conducted to show the existence of the PMIWM inverse system, to be modeled mathematically. The inverse system approximated and identified by the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) constitutes the back-propagation neural network inverse (BPNNI) system. Then, by cascading the BPNNI system on the left side of the original PMIWM system, a new decoupling, pseudo-linear system is established. Moreover, the 2-DOF internal model control (IMC) method is employed to design the extra closed-loop controller that further improves disturbance rejection and robustness of the whole system. Consequently, the proposed decoupling control approach incorporates the advantages of both the BPNNI and the IMC. Effectiveness of thus proposed control approach is verified by means of simulation and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiments.

Opis:
The wind energy conversion systems (WECS) suffer from an intermittent nature of source (wind) and the resulting disparity between power generation and electricity demand. Thus, WECS are required to be operated at maximum power point (MPP). This research paper addresses a sophisticated MPP tracking (MPPT) strategy to ensure optimum (maximum) power out of the WECS despite environmental (wind) variations. This study considers a WECS (fixed pitch, 3KW, variable speed) coupled with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and proposes three sliding mode control (SMC) based MPPT schemes, a conventional first order SMC (FOSMC), an integral back-stepping-based SMC (IBSMC) and a super-twisting reachability-based SMC, for maximizing the power output. However, the efficacy of MPPT/control schemes rely on availability of system parameters especially, uncertain/nonlinear dynamics and aerodynamic terms, which are not commonly accessible in practice. As a remedy, an off-line artificial function-fitting neural network (ANN) based on Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is employed to enhance the performance and robustness of MPPT/control scheme by effectively imitating the uncertain/nonlinear drift terms in the control input pathways. Furthermore, the speed and missing derivative of a generator shaft are determined using a high-gain observer (HGO). Finally, a comparison is made among the stated strategies subjected to stochastic and deterministic wind speed profiles. Extensive MATLAB/Simulink simulations assess the effectiveness of the suggested approaches.
