Opis:
The paper presents an idea of predicting durability of concrete structures with steel reinforcement under conditions of chloride and carbonation corrosion risk. Mechanisms of destruction due to steel corrosion in such conditions are shown. The recently elaborated model of carbonation and general model of chloride diffusion have been discussed. An algorithm of the rest service life time prognosis has been shown and options of its main stages realization have been done. An example of durability prognosis for pre-stressed hollow-core floor slab with upper layer of concrete and epoxy-resin coating has been given. This example confirms the usefulness of the described prognosis method and demonstrates its helpfulness in a structure management according to the standards of EN 1504 series.

Opis:
The aim of the study is to show the improvements on durability of prestressed concrete elements by introducing in concrete mass a certain quantity of fibres. Random distributed fibres provide a significant increase in the tensile strength, having also favourable consequence on other mechanical and durability characteristics. The prestressed concrete elements are under a permanent stress state that is not optimal in all their sections and zones. One of the most unfavourable effects is the reduction of material durability, especially in aggressive environments, in which prestressed reinforcements are more sensitive to utilization than reinforced concrete components. The authors present the result brought up by the use of steel fibres in the improvement of the durability of concrete elements, in relation with the volumetric steel ratio, and the geometrical ratio of steel fibres, leading to a favourable effect on prestressing efficiency.

Opis:
The objective of the paper is to analyze the effect of substrate roughness and superficial microcraking upon adhesion of repair systems using concrete surface engineering approach. The results presented in this paper have been obtained within the framework of research projects performed to develop a better understanding of the factors affecting the adhesion of repair materials through a surface engineering approach. Based on the results of investigations, the authors showed that the durability and quality of concrete repairs depend to a large degree on the characteristics of the substrate. Mechanical preparation and profiling of the concrete surface to be repaired has to be balanced with potential co-lateral effects such as superficial cracking, too often induced as a result of inappropriate concrete removal method selection, and the loss of benefits due to better mechanical anchorage. The results obtained confirm also that Concrete Surface Engineering, as a scientific concept, will definitely contribute to shed more light on how to optimize repair bond, taking into account interactions between the materials at different observation scales.

The subject of the article is a comparison of two types of concrete carbonation models: self-limited carbonation and infinite carbonation. The results of the research on the progress of carbonation during six years of sample exposure in natural atmospheric conditions were used to determine the detailed models for a set of concretes with different w/c and different types of cement, and two scenarios of initial curing. It has been established that the model of self-limiting carbonation (i.e. hyperbolic) is more adequate for describing laboratory tests results in natural conditions.

Opis:
Many steel riveted bridges have been built in Poland since 1950 and they have not reached their design working lives yet. Nevertheless, a number of fatigue damages are found, especially with structural joints. Moreover, in the past 25 years the traffic on the Polish road network has increased significantly leading to the increasing number of heavy vehicles in the traffic flows. This may affect the safety, serviceability and durability of existing bridges. The road administration is therefore interested in reliable and agreed methods to assess the safety and durability of existing bridges. The special procedure has been prepared to provide technical insight on the way in which existing steel structures could be assessed and the remaining fatigue life could be estimated. This approach follows the principles and application rules in the Eurocodes and provides a scheme with various levels of analysis: a basic level with general methods and further levels, more complex and sophisticated and requiring specific experience and knowledge. This procedure has been used for the fatigue assessment of the 60-year-old riveted truss bridge. The applied procedure as well as the main results of the assessment have been presented in the paper.

Opis:
“Polyurea coatings as a possible structural reinforcement system” is a research project aimed at exploring possible applications of polyurea coatings for improving structural performance (including steel, concrete, wooden and other structures used in the construction industry). As part of the project, this paper focuses on evaluating the performance of bent reinforced concrete (RC) beams covered with a polyurea coating system. Easy polyurea application and its numerous advantages can prove very useful when existing RC structural elements are repaired or retrofitted. Laboratory tests of three types of RC beams with three different longitudinal reinforcement ratios were performed for the purposes of this paper. The tests were designed to determine the bending strength, performance and cracking patterns of the coated RC beams. In addition, a theoretical model was developed to predict the impact of the polyurea coating on the bending strength of the RC beams. On this basis, the effect of the coating on the bending strength and the performance of the coated beams at the ultimate limit state (ULS) was examined and analyzed. The results showed that the use of the polyurea coating has a positive impact on the cracking state of the RC beams subject to bending and little effect on their bending strength.

Opis:
This paper proposes a comprehensive classification of test methods for the diagnosis of concrete structures. The main focus is on the ranges of suitability of the particular methods and techniques for assessing the durability of structures, depending on the principal degradation mechanisms and their effects on this durability. The survey covers non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, which do not in any way breach the integrity of the tested structures, and semi-destructive testing (SDT) methods requiring material samples to be taken or any other minor breach of structural integrity. An original taxonomy of physical, chemical and biological diagnostic methods, useful in assessment of concrete structures durability, is proposed. Equipment specific for selected advanced testing methods is presented as well as exemplary test results.

Opis:
S304H steel is used in the construction of pressure components of boilers with supercritical operating parameters. The paper presents the results of research on the microstructure following ageing for 30,000 hours at 650 and 700°C. Microstructure examination was performed using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The precipitates were identified using transmission electron microscopy. The paper analyses the precipitation process and its dynamics depending on the temperature and ageing time in detail. MX carbonitrides and the ε_Cu phase were proved to be the most stable phase, regardless of the test temperature. It was also showed that the M₂₃C₆ carbide precipitates in the tested steel and the intermetallic sigma phase (σ) may play a significant role in the loss of durability of the tested steel. This is related to their significant increase due to the influence of elevated temperature, and their coagulation and coalescence dynamics strongly depend on the ageing/operating temperature level. The qualitative and quantitative identification of the secondary phase precipitation processes described in the study is important in the analysis of the loss of durability of the tested steel under creep conditions.

This paper focuses on examinations of asphalt-cement mixtures (ACM). This is a recycled material which can be used in road pavement layers. In the article stiffness modulus tests and fatigue tests of asphalt-cement mixtures were shown. The authors decided to lead research on fatigue durability of asphalt-cement mixtures to set fatigue characteristics of these materials. So far in research or other works any adequate fatigue criterion for ACM mixtures has not been developed. As a result of the examinations a level of fatigue damage was suggested. For new fatigue damage a strain level in one million load cycle was estimated. Based on that a fatigue design criterion for asphalt-cement mixtures was estimated.

Opis:
This paper deals with the issues pertinent to the design of frost-resistant concretes in exposure class XF3 (high water saturation) when the concretes are made with cements containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (ggbs). The testing programme covered four series of non-air entrained concrete made with cements CEM I, CEM II/A-S, CEM II/B-S and CEM III/A containing 0%, 13%, 28% and 53% ggbs respectively, and two non-air entrained concrete series with the binder made from CEM I and 0 to 55% ggbs. The water-binder (w/b) ratio ranged from 0.25 to 0.55. Frost durability testing was performed using a modified ASTM C666A procedure to determine changes in mass (dm) and beam length (dL). The relationships occurring between the w/b ratio and ggbs content in the binder and the length change (dL) of the specimens were described using curvilinear regression functions, through the analysis of artificial neural networks. Slag-content-dependent critical values of the w/b ratio were determined taking the length change dL = 1.3 mm to be the criterion for the resistance to internal cracking. In the authors’ view, this approach can be a good method for checking equivalent performance of concretes made with cements containing mineral additions.

Opis:
Science and engineering intermingle in the area of construction. Engineering works, often of great dimensions and design life cycle of many decades, have to be designed on a scientific basis since the safety of hundreds of users depends on their design. The task of scientific institutions is to define the construction performance within categories that correspond to the contemporary level of knowledge and technology. A construction appraiser who speaks out in a way that ensures unquestionable competence about the performance of elements and buildings (existing and under construction), should be convinced of the scientific basis of his opinions. A comparison of construction sections vs. basic requirements presents an archetype of the science of construction. A matrix of the science of construction reveals its multi-faceted nature; if related to time – the issue of durability has to be considered, and if related to the scale – the complexity. Defining the construction performance in terms of technical features is a constant search for a relationship between the material model and the usability model of a building. The construction industry uses a lot of “rules of thumb”, more than any other sector of technology. In the era of computer-aided design, CAD, and building information modelling (BIM), those rules of thumb remain invaluable verification tools.

Adhesion in repair systems is one of the most important factors affecting their durability. Elaboration of a reliable nondestructive test method to perform an adhesion mapping is one of the most important tasks. A majority of NDT methods applicable for the assessment of concrete structures are based on the propagation of various types of stress waves. In this paper, the influence of the repair material type (polymer-cement or polymer) and quality of the concrete substrate (roughness, microcracking, not cleaned surface) upon propagation of stress waves in a repair system was studied in view of developing a reliable NDT procedure for the field assessment of bond quality in concrete repairs.

Opis:
This paper focuses on evaluation of two laboratory-based methods of compaction of foamed bitumen and bitumen emulsion mixes: impact compaction with a Marshall hammer and static compaction using a hydraulic press. The investigated compaction methods were assessed in terms of their impact on the physical and mechanical properties of produced laboratory specimens, including: air void content, indirect tensile strength before and after conditioning in water (ITSdry, ITSwet), tensile strength ratio (TSR), and indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM) at 0°C, 10°C and 20°C. The statically compacted specimens attained higher levels of mechanical properties and resistance to moisture damage, which was associated with a lower content of air voids in the specimens formed using a hydraulic press. Authors present a calculation showing that a mechanistic design based on the laboratory static press compaction method leads to overestimation of fatigue cracking resistance of the road base.
