Opis:
With the use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the characteristic temperatures and enthalpy of phase transformations were defined for commercial AlSi9Cu3 cast alloy (EN AC-46000) that is being used for example for pressurized castings for automotive industry. During the heating with the speed of 10ºC∙min-1 two endothermic effects has been observed. The first appears at the temperature between 495 ºC and 534 ºC, and the other between 555 ºC and 631 ºC. With these reactions the phase transformation enthalpy comes up as +6 J g-1 and +327 J g-1. During the cooling with the same speed, three endothermic reactions were observed at the temperatures between 584 ºC and 471 ºC. The total enthalpy of the transitions is – 348 J g-1. Complimentary to the calorimetric research, the structural tests (SEM and EDX) were conducted on light microscope Reichert and on scanning microscope Hitachi S-4200. As it comes out of that, there are dendrites in the structure of α(Al) solution, as well as the eutectic (β) silicon crystals, and two types of eutectic mixture: double eutectic α(Al)+β(Si) and compound eutectic α+Al2Cu+β.

Opis:
Stopy typu Al-Si-Mg o zawartości krzemu w przedziale 4 do 24 % mas. (siluminy) należą do jednych z najbardziej rozpowszechnionych tworzyw wykorzystywanych w odlewnictwie metali nieżelaznych.
Al-Si-Mg cast alloys with a silicon content in the range of 4 to 24 % by weight (silumins) are among the most common materials used in the casting of non-ferrous metals. Their popularity is due to a large set of properties, inter alia, low density or high mechanical properties and casting properties. On the other hand, that uses characteristics of the technological process of this group of materials in the emergence of their porosity and microshrinkage which can be a source of cracks. The method allows the elimination of the negative effects of this group of defects is Surface High-Temperature Plastic Processing (PWPP method). Modification of the surface layer of the cast with this type of treatment is particularly desirable for the structural components of the transport industry, electrical engineering or in the building industry. These applications require a coherent castings, devoid of discontinuity of the surface layer of the structure and increased mechanical properties. One way to improve on the second properties is heat treatment, which consists of oversaturation and artificial aging. The paper presents research on the selection of optimal parameters of heat treatment time and temperature for the AlSi7Mg0,3 alloy after PWPP method.

Application of simulation analysis has become increasingly inseparable part of the design process of casting technology. The possibility of a virtual observation of the temperature distribution, heat transfer between the liquid metal and the mould, evaluation of the nature of the liquid metal flow are values that are impossible to monitor during real-time production. Through the computer simulations, there is a possibility of a preliminary assessment of the phenomenon without the need for expensive and time consuming trials. On the example of the diesel engine compressor rotor the process of preparation of foundry technology, simulation analysis, the visualization of filling of the mold cavity and solidification of the liquid metal was presented. The casting was performed on the VC3000D INDUTHERM furnace that uses the phenomenon of POV (Pressure over Vacuum).

Opis:
In order to study the effects of various gating systems on the casting of a complex aluminum alloyed multi-way valve body, both software simulation analysis and optimization were carried out. Following, the aluminum alloyed multi-way valve body was cast to check the pouring of the aluminum alloy valve body. The computer simulation results demonstrated that compared to the single side casting mode, the casting method of both sides of the gating system would reduce the filling of the external gas, while the air contact time would be lower. Adversely, due to the pouring on both sides, the melt cannot reach at the same time, leading to the liquid metal speed into the cavity to differ, which affected the liquid metal filling stability. The riser unreasonable setting led to the solidification time extension, resulting in a high amount of casting defects during solidification. Also, both gating systems led the entire casting inconsequential solidification. To overcome the latter problems, a straight gate was set at the middle pouring and the horizontal gate diversion occurred on both sides of pouring, which could provide better casting results for the aluminum alloyed multi-valve body.

Opis:
The study involved using the liquid-solid compound casting process to fabricate a lightweight ZE41/AlSi12 bimetallic material. ZE41 melt heated to 660 °C was poured onto a solid AlSi12 insert placed in a steel mold. The mold with the insert inside was preheated to 300 °C. The microstructure of the bonding zone between the alloys was examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition was determined through linear and point analyses with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS). The bonding zone between the magnesium and aluminum alloys was about 250 μm thick. The results indicate that the microstructure of the bonding zone changes throughout its thickness. The structural constituents of the bonding zone are: a thin layer of a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg and particles of Mg-Zn-RE intermetallic phases (adjacent to the ZE41 alloy), a eutectic region (Mg17(Al,Zn)12 intermetallic phase and a solid solution of Al and Zn in Mg), a thin region containing fine, white particles, probably Al-RE intermetallic phases, a region with Mg2Si particles distributed over the eutectic matrix, and a region with Mg2Si particles distributed over the Mg-Al intermetallic phases matrix (adjacent to the AlSi12 alloy). The microstructural analysis performed in the length direction reveals that, for the process parameters tested, the bonding zone forming between the alloys was continuous. Low porosity was observed locally near the ZE41 alloy. The shear strength of the AZ91/AlSi17 joint varied from 51.3 to 56.1 MPa.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a two-step isothermal annealing respectively at 1000 ˚C for 30 min, then at the range of 900÷450 ˚C increments 50 ˚C on the microstructure CuAl10 Ni5Fe5 bronze with additions of Si, Cr, Mo, W and C, cast into sand moulds. The study concerned the newly developed species, bronze, aluminium-iron-nickel with additions of Si, Cr, Mo, W and C. In order to determine the time and temperature for the characteristic of phase transitions that occur during heat treatment of the test method was used thermal and derivation analysis (TDA). The study was conducted on cylindrical test castings cast in the mould of moulding sand. It was affirmed that one the method TDA can appoint characteristic for phase transformations points about co-ordinates: τ (s), t (˚C), and to plot out curves TTT for the studied bronze with their use. It was also found that there is a five isothermal annealing temperature ranges significantly altering the microstructure of examined bronze.

Opis:
During the casting of aluminium alloys, the susceptibility to form oxide films is high, due to the turbulent flow of the melt and constant exposure of new surface area. This have impact on the properties of the material and the service life of the casting components. Also, hydrogen solubility in the solid state are very low, which ends up being rejected and causing porosity. After pouring, when solidification occurs, another phenomenon arise called shrinkage. This require excess molten metal to be fed during this phase change to eliminate or reduce the effect of volumetric changes. Filling and feeding during aluminium casting is therefore of paramount importance, and careful steps needs to be undertaken to reduce possible defects in the castings. The objective is to apply studied literature guides and rules and simulate the casting process of aluminium alloys, and understand the how certain defects are occurring during this process. This is a preliminary study towards the understanding of the “macro evolution” of Al-Si-Cu alloy during solidification, which will be the bases for the study of microsegregation of the specified alloy.

Opis:
Computational Materials Engineering (CME) is a high technological approach used to design and develop new materials including the physical, thermal and mechanical properties by combining materials models at multiple techniques. With the recent advances in technology, the importance of microstructural design in CME environments and the contribution that such an approach can make in the estimation of material properties in simulations are frequently discussed in scientific, academic, and industrial platforms. Determination of the raw material characteristics that can be modeled in a virtual environment at an atomic scale by means of simulation programs plays a big role in combining experimental and virtual worlds and creating digital twins of the production chain and the products. In this study, a new generation, alternative and effective approach that could be used to the development of Al-Si based wheel casting alloys is proposed. This approach is based on the procedure of optimizing the physical and thermodynamic alloy properties developed in a computer environment with the CME technique before the casting phase. This article demonstrates the applicability of this approach in alloy development studies to produce Al-Si alloy wheels using the low pressure die casting (LPDC) method. With this study, an alternative and economical way is presented to the alloy development studies by trial and error in the aluminum casting industry. In other respects, since the study is directly related to the automotive industry, the reduction in fuel consumption in vehicles is an expected effect, as the new alloy aims to reduce the weight of the wheels. In addition to conserving energy, reducing carbon emissions also highlights the environmental aspects of this study.

The paper presents the results of research on the determination of the effect of pouring temperature on the macrostructure of the castings subjected to complex (surface and volume) modification and double filtration. Tested castings were made of post-production scrap (gating system parts) of IN-713C superalloy. Tests included the evaluation of the number of grains per 1 mm2, mean grain surface area, shape factor and tensile strength. Casting temperature below 1470 °C positively influenced the modification effect. The grains were finer and the mechanical properties increased, especially for castings with thicker walls. On the other hand, manufacture of thin walled castings of high quality require pouring temperature above 1480 °C.

The tolerance of damage rule progressively meets the approval in the design casting parts procedures. Therefore, there were appeared the new challenges and expectations for permanent development of process virtualization in the mechanical engineering industry. Virtualization is increasingly developed on the stage of product design and materials technologies optimization. Increasing expectations of design and process engineers regarding the practical effectiveness of applied simulation systems with new proposed up-grades modules is observed. The purpose is to obtain simulation tools allowing the most possible realistic prognosis of the casting structure, including indication, with the highest possible probability, places in the casting that are endangered with the possibility of shrinkage– and gas porosity formation. This 3D map of discontinuities and structure transformed in local mechanical characteristics are used to calculate the local stresses and safety factors. The needs of tolerance of damage and new approach to evaluate the quality of such prognosis must be defined. These problems of validation of new models/modules used to predict the shrinkage– and gas porosity including the chosen structure parameters in the example of AlSi7 alloy are discussed in the paper.

Opis:
The article presents the investigations of 7xxx aluminium alloys performed by the method of thermal and derivational analysis. The studies made it possible to identify the effect of the changes in the Cu concentration, the total Zn and Mg weight concentrations and the Zn/Mg weight concentration ratio on their crystallization process: the cooling as well as the kinetics and dynamics of the thermal process of cooling and crystallization. Metallographic studies were performed on the microstructure of the examined alloys and their HB hardness was measured. The evaluation of the changes was presented in reference to the model alloys EN AW-7003 and EN AW-7010, whose microstructure under the conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium are described by the phase diagrams: Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu. The performed investigations confirmed that the hardness HB of the examined alloys is mainly determined by the reinforcement of the matrix αAl by the introduced alloy additions and the presence of phases Θ(Al2Cu) and S(Al2CuMg) rich in copper, as well as η(MgZn2), in the examined alloys' microstructure. The increase of the amount of intermetallic phases precipitated in the microstructure of the examined alloys is caused, beside Cu, by the characteristic change of Zn wt. concentration and Mg. It was proposed that the process of one-stage thermal treatment of the examined alloys be introduced at a temperature of up to tJ-20 °C, which will prevent the exceedance of the solidus temperature.

Technologia wytapianych modeli należy do najstarszych technologii odlewniczych. Historycznie służyła do odlewania narzędzi, broni i ozdób. Model wykonany z wosku pszczelego oblepiano gliną suszono i wypalano. Otrzymywano odlewy o dużej gładkości powierzchni, dokładności i precyzji wykonania ornamentu. Szczególnie w przemyśle zbrojeniowym, lotniczym, motoryzacyjnym, energetycznym, budowlanym, a nawet kosmicznym. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań i eksperymentów, prowadzonych w zakresie technologii odlewnictwa miedzi i stopów miedzi z zastosowaniem metody wytapianych modeli, zarówno w aspekcie historycznym, jak i współczesnej praktyki przemysłowej. Przykładowo przedstawiono analizę wybranych elementów dawnych technologii, form i odlewów wytworzonych w epoce brązu oraz wyniki badań dotyczące aktualnie produkowanych odlewów dla branży energetycznej. Jakość odlewów została oceniona na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań z zakresu mikrostruktury, składu chemicznego, przewodności elektrycznej i zawartości tlenu.
Investment casting technology belongs to the oldest casting techniques. Historically, it was used for casting tools, weapons and ornaments. A model, made from beeswax, was covered in loam, dried and fired. The casts obtained were characterised by high surface smoothness, accuracy and precision of its ornaments. This method was used for relatively small casts as well as for big monuments. Nowadays, this technology is used in many fields of manufacturing, both artistic and industrial, especially in ornaments, aviation, automotive, power, construction and even space industry. This work presents the results of research and experiments conducted in the field of casting technology of copper and copper alloys, applying the investment casting method, both in its historical aspect and modern industrial practice. An exemplary analysis was presented of the chosen elements of the old technologies, moulds and casts, as well as the results of casts made currently for the power industry. The casts quality was evaluated based on the research of their microstructure, chemical composition, electrical conductivity and oxygen content.
