Opis:
There is an industry interesting in intermetallic alloys in recent years. There are widely possibilities to adopt this kind of materials for structural units. More expensive materials can be replaced by them. A property which limits their wider application is the low plasticity at environment and elevated temperatures. In paper the results of the thermal microstructure modification are shown. To this end, the influence of annealing time and temperature on the intermetallic phase Fe3Al grain size was investigated. The impact of these factors on micro-hardness was examined as well. It was found that these operations cause the grain size reduction and the micro-hardness decrease.

Opis:
This article focuses on the study of the influence of remelting and subsequent natural and artificial ageing on the structure of recycled AlSi9Cu3 alloy with increased iron content. The assessed changes in eutectic silicon and iron-based intermetallic phases were carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The degradation of the eutectic silicon morphology due to remelting occurred only at the highest numbers of remelting. The effect of remelting the investigated alloy, which is accompanied by a gradual increase in wt. % Fe, began to manifest significantly through a change in the length of the ferric phases after the fourth remelting. As expected, the artificial ageing process has proven to be more effective than natural ageing. It has led to a change in the eutectic silicon morphology and has been beneficial in reducing the lengths of adverse ferric phases. The use of alloys with higher numbers of remelting, or with greater “contamination”, for the manufacture of shape-challenging castings is possible when using a suitable method of eliminating the negative factors of the remelting process. The results of our investigation show a suitable method of the above elimination the application of heat treatment T5 – via artificial ageing.

Opis:
The cast alloys crystallizing in Fe-C-V system are classified as white cast iron, because all the carbon is bound in vanadium carbides. High vanadium cast iron has a very high abrasion resistance due to hard VC vanadium carbides. However, as opposed to ordinary white cast iron, this material can be treated using conventional machining tools. This article contains the results of the group of Fe-C-V alloys of various microstructure which are been tested metallographic, mechanical using an INSTRON machine and machinability with the method of drilling. The study shows that controlling the proper chemical composition can influence on the type and shape of the crystallized matrix and vanadium carbides. This makes it possible to obtain a high-vanadium cast iron with very high wear resistance while maintaining a good workability.

The results of research on stereological parameters of carbides in modified hypoeutectic chromium cast iron were shown in the paper. The effect of distance the casting heat centre of casting to the carbide phase morphology was examined. The samples for metallographic examination were taken from various locations of the model casting prepared in a special tester. This model casting was designed to simulate the solidification of heavy castings. Using the proposed methodology the relation of the distance from the model mould and the size, perimeter, length, width and the shape factor of carbides was examined. During the analysis, the values of stereological parameters of carbides changed on various sections of the model casting.

Particles of the Fe-Al type (less than 50 m in diameter) were sprayed onto the 045 steel substrate by means of the detonation method. The TEM, SAED and EDX analyses revealed that the Fe-Al particles have been partially melted in the experiment of coating formation. Particle undergone melting even within about 80% of its volume. Therefore, solidification of the melted part of particles was expected. Solidification differed significantly due to a large range of chemical composition of applied particles (from 15 at.% Al up to 63 at.% Al). A single particle containing 63 at.% Al was subjected to the detailed analysis, only. The TEM / SAED techniques revealed in the solidified part of particle three sub-layers: an amorphous phase, [...] , periodically situated FeAl + Fe2Al5 phases, and a non-equilibrium phase, [...]. A hypothesis dealing with the inter-metallic phases formation in such a single particle of the nominal composition No = 0.63 is presented. At first, the solid / liquid system is treated as an interconnection: substrate / liquid / nonmelted particle part . Therefore, it is suggested that the solidification occurs simultaneously in two directions: towards a substrate and towards a non-melted part of particle. The solidification mechanism is referred to the Fe-Al meta-stable phase diagram. It is shown that the melted part of particle solidifies rapidly according to the phase diagram of meta-stable equilibrium and at a significant deviation from the thermodynamic equilibrium.

This article addresses the results of microstructural examinations of the volume solidifying Fe–C–V–Si alloys containing carbon in the range of 1.39÷1.76%, vanadium in the range of 6.77÷7.77% and silicon in the range of 0.02÷3.10. The melting charge was Armco iron, ferro-vanadium with 81.7 wt.%V, spectrally pure graphite and technically pure silica. It was shown that with increasing the silicon content, the microstructure of the resulting alloy changing. These changes include both a matrix the shape of the primary carbides and type of crystallizing eutectic. In the studied alloys was observed following eutectic: fibrous (crystallize as non-faceted/ non-faceted eutectic), complex regular (crystallize as faceted/ non-faceted eutectic), spiral (crystallize as faceted/ faceted eutectic). The results illustrated by the images of the microstructures made with an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope.

Opis:
This paper presents the influence of annealing time 30, 60 and 120 min at 1000 C for quenching CuAl7Fe5Ni5W2Si2 bronze in 10% water solution of NaCl, on the microstructure and mechanical properties. The presented results concern the species newly developed aluminum-iron-nickel bronze, with additions W and Si. In order to determine changes in the microstructure of the hardened bronze metallographic studies were performed on cylindrical samples of diameter 10 mm, on the metallographic microscope with digital image analysis, X-ray phase analysis, EDX point with the digital recording on the computer. Specified percentage of the microstructure of martensite and bainite, participation of proeutectoid \alfa phase in the microstructure, grain size of former \beta phase, the amount of dissolved \kappa phase. It was found that in the microstructure of bronze in the cast state, there are a number of intermetallic phases of \kappa type. At interphase boundaries of primary intermetallic faceted precipitates, especially rich in tungsten (IM_W), nucleate and grow dendritic primary intermetallic [...] phases, with chemical composition similar to the type of Fe3Si iron silicide. Dissolved, during the heating, in the \beta phase are all the intermediate phase included in the microstructure, with the exception of primary intermetallic phases of tungsten and [...]. Prolongation of the isothermal annealing causes coagulation and coalescence of primary phases. In microstructure of the bronze after quenching obtained the \alfa phase precipitation on the grain boundary of secondary \beta phase, coarse bainite and martensite, for all annealing times. With the change of annealing time are changed the relative proportions of individual phases or their systems, in the microstructure. In the microstructure of bronze, hold at temperature of 1000 C for 60 min, after quenching martensitic microstructure was obtained with the primary phases, and the least amount of bainite.

In order to determine the leading phase of the Fe - 4.25% C eutectic alloy, the method of directional crystallization, which allows to study the character of the solid / liquid growth front, was used. Examined eutectic was directionally solidified with a constant temperature gradient of G = 33,5 K/mm and growth rate of v = 125 μm/s (450 mm/h). The Bridgman technique was used for the solidification process. The sample was grown by pulling it downwards up to 30 mm in length. The alloy quenched by rapid pulling down into the Ga-In-Sn liquid metal. The sample was examined on the longitudinal section using a light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The shape of the solid/liquid interface and particularly the leading phase protrusion were revealed. The formation of the concave – convex interface has been identified in the quasi-regular eutectic growth arrested by quenching. The cementite phase was determined to be a leading phase. The total protrusion d is marked in the adequate figure.

For investigation purposes the tribotester pin-on-disk type with the contrsample made of steel 40H quenched and tempered was used. Tests were carried out with the following process parameters: pressure p = 2MPa and linear velocity (circuital) V = 0.46m/s. It was noted, that intermetallic samples with the small distinction in chemical compositions, annealed at different temperatures showed a large difference in the quantity of material loss in the all tested environments. Appropriately selected parameters of the intermetallic alloys annealing, provide their greater resistance to abrasion in the air and oil environments than in the case of steel.

Opis:
Available technical literature includes a number of reports on harmful effects connected with elevated content of iron in aluminium-silicon alloys but in case of pressure castings, alloys containing up to 2% Fe can be used. This follows from lesser susceptibility of such alloys to sticking to surfaces of metal moulds. One effect of iron presence in aluminium-silicon alloys is precipitation of iron-rich intermetallic phases. In the study reported in this paper it has been found that in a multicomponent aluminium-silicon alloy, the indentation hardness (HIT) and the elastic indentation modulus (EIT) of intermetallic phases occurring in the form of polyhedrons and/or their conglomerates, rich in aluminium, iron, silicon, manganese, and chromium, containing also copper, nickel, and vanadium, are higher than those measured for silicon crystals. This feature can be used to intentional modelling microstructure of mechanical parts which are expected to show high resistance to abrasive wear.

Opis:
Solidification of AlSiFe alloys was studied using a directional solidification facility and the CALPHAD technique was applied to calculate phase diagrams and to predict occurring phases. The specimens solidified by electromagnetic stirring showed segregation across, and the measured chemical compositions were transferred into phase diagrams. The ternary phase diagrams presented different solidification paths caused by segregation in each selected specimen. The property diagrams showed modification in the sequence and precipitation temperature of the phases. It is proposed in the study to use thermodynamic calculations with Thermo-Calc which enables us to visualize the mushy zone in directional solidification. 2D maps based on property diagrams show a mushy zone with a liquid channel in the AlSi7Fe1.0 specimen center, where significant mass fraction (33%) of β-Al5FeSi phases may precipitate before α-Al dendrites form. Otherwise liquid channel occurred almost empty of β in AlSi7Fe0.5 specimen and completely without β in AlSi9Fe0.2. The property diagrams revealed also possible formation of α–Al8Fe2Si phases.
