Opis:
In this paper, crushability of foundry sand particles was studied. Three kinds of in-service silica sands in foundry enterprises selected as the study object, and foundry sand particles were subjected to mechanical load and thermal load during service were analyzed. A set of methods for simulating mechanical load and thermal load by milling and thermal-cold cycling were designed and researched, which were used to characterize the crushability for silica sand particles, the microstructure was observed by SEM. According to the user’s experience in actual application, the crushability of Sand C was the best and then Sand B, the last Sand A. The results indicated that mechanical load, thermal load and thermal-mechanical load can all be used to characterize the crushability of foundry sand particles. Microscopic appearances can qualitatively characterize the crushability of foundry sand particles to a certain extent, combining with the additions and cracks which are observed on the surface.

Opis:
The paper discusses the possibility of application of percolation theory to model the structure of materials in a virtual space. The designed models were transferred to real space using modern incremental manufacturing techniques like 3D printing. Studies of model materials of this type based on percolation theory are expected to provide more accurate knowledge of the problem, which is extremely important from the point of view of the properties of most construction materials. Reference of percolation phenomena to materials science is more and more frequently done in the design of various types of composite materials, such as e.g. conductive composites. In this study, the percolation theory has been used to design in microscale an optimum material through model analysis done in macroscale. Since studies of percolation in polycrystalline materials are difficult, and there are also some technical limitations imposed on the evaluation done in a volume of material, this phenomenon is usually examined in a simplified manner, which means that it is reduced only to statistical analysis of potential percolation with determination of its threshold value. To generate a potential structure based on percolation theory, popular computer programmes for solid modelling were used. Real shapes were conferred to the designed models using a widely known technique of 3D printing. It allows the production of parts in ABS material. The subject of the present study combines modern design techniques with modern manufacturing techniques, relating both to the fundamentals of materials science. Today's software tools enable creating more complex solids, while their transfer to reality allows better understanding of dependencies that exist in the structure of materials. The originality of this study consists in the art of creating new construction materials with planned properties. The article offers a new approach to the capabilities of scheduling modern engineering materials with the help of percolation theory.

Opis:
The paper discusses possible applications of the percolation theory in analysis of the microstructure images of polycrystalline materials. Until now, practical use of this theory in metallographic studies has been an almost unprecedented practice. Observation of structures so intricate with the help of this tool is far from the current field of its application. Due to the complexity of the problem itself, modern computer programmes related with the image processing and analysis have been used. To enable practical implementation of the task previously established, an original software has been created. Based on cluster analysis, it is used for the determination of percolation phenomena in the examined materials. For comparative testing, two two-phase materials composed of phases of the same type (ADI matrix and duplex stainless steel) were chosen. Both materials have an austenitic - ferritic structure. The result of metallographic image analysis using a proprietary PERKOLACJA.EXE computer programme was the determination of the content of individual phases within the examined area and of the number of clusters formed by these phases. The outcome of the study is statistical information, which explains and helps in better understanding of the planar images and real spatial arrangement of the examined material structure. The results obtained are expected to assist future determination of the effect that the internal structure of two-phase materials may have on a relationship between the spatial structure and mechanical properties.

Microstreams of liquid formed during the implosion of cavitation bubbles and the effects of pressure waves coming from disappearing bubbles are the main causes of damage of the washed surface, leading to loss of material (the cavitation erosion). Repeated cavitation implosions cause non-uniform stress state resulting in the strengthening of the surface layer, change of micro-geometry and surface cracks leading to detachment of the material particles. Course of cavitation erosion process depends on the effects of plastic deformation at the beginning of the destruction. The aim of this study was analysis of plastic deformation by EBSD method of CuZn10 cast alloy at the beginning of the cavitation destruction process.

Opis:
Cavitational erosion is the phenomenon of mechanical destruction of a material due to the implosion of cavitational bubbles. Cavitational resistance is the ability of material to oppose the effect of cavitation being determined most frequently by analysing the kinetics of destruction of a material being examined on a given device. Materials with the highest resistance to cavitational destruction are characterised by the longest incubation period and smaller destruction rate. The carried out laboratory tests of resistance to cavitational erosion showed that determination of the beginning of cavitational wear is very difficult because the kinetics of cavitational destruction depends on: test bed type, tested material and test time. The aim of presented study was to propose a method for determination of the beginning of cavitational wear through comparison of mass decrement and destroyed area increment curves on the example of FeAl36 intermetallic alloy subjected to the cavitational wear on a flux-impact test stand.

Opis:
The main reason of a cavitational destruction is the mechanical action of cavitation pulses onto the material’s surface. The course of cavitation destruction process is very complex and depends on the physicochemical and structural features of a material. A resistance to cavitation destruction of the material increases with the increase of its mechanical strength, fatigue resistance as well as hardness. Nevertheless, the effect of structural features on the material’s cavitational resistance has been not fully clarified. In the present paper, the cavitation destruction of ZnAl4 as cast alloy was investigated on three laboratory stands: vibration, jet-impact and flow stands. The destruction mechanism of ZnAl4 as cast alloy subjected to cavitational erosion using various laboratory stands is shown in the present paper.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of changes in the outer surface of the casting made in a modified ceramic form. The introduction of the modification in the inner surface of the form, as a metallic coating was intended to produce a high quality of the casting surface. To describe the results, the three parameters have been chosen to characterize the surface roughness, i.e. Ra, Rz and Rq. In implementing the popular method of casting was used, so – called the lost polymer models. The models made from different plastic materials are chemically and electrochemically coated with a layer of nickel. The next step was to remove the model from the form and pouring the liquid metal over it. The observation of the casting surface was performed by using the scanning electron microscope and a profilometer. As a result of these attempts a number of castings have been obtained with an outside layer generated of lower roughness than the casting made in the normal gypsum form. The proposed method can be called an innovative one because it reduces the technological cycle by one processing operation of investment casting. During the process of casting both the cast and the outer layer improving the properties of the manufactured product is being produced.

Opis:
The process of cavitational erosion induces destruction of a material which consists of plastic strains, mass decrements, phase changes, grain fragmentation and surface micro- and macro-geometry changes. Heterogeneity of this process causes the destruction of a solid body due to cavitation to be hard to predict. Examinations of many materials showed that the course of cavitation wear is basically affected by structure which allows for orientation and size of grains and their shape, fraction of small and large angle boundaries, type of phases (in multi-phase materials), interposition of their grains, grain volume fraction as well as distribution of impurities and possible defects of materials, such as cracks, pores and non-metallic inclusions. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of structure on the cavitational wear of FeAl intermetallic phase-based alloys with cubic lattice.

Opis:
The paper presents the method of manufacturing casts made of the IN-713C nickel superalloy using the wax lost investment casting process and silicon carbide chills. The authors designed experimental casts, the gating system and selected the chills material. Wax pattern, ceramic shell mould and experimental casts were prepared for the purposes of research. On the basis of the temperature distribution measurements, the kinetics of the solidification process was determined in the thickened part of the plate cast. This allowed to establish the quantity of phase transitions which occurred during cast cooling process and the approximate values of liquidus, eutectic, solidus and solvus temperatures as well as the solidification time and the average value of cast cooling rate. Non-destructive testing and macroscopic analysis were applied to determine the location and size of shrinkage defects. The authors present the mechanism of solidification and formation of shrinkage defects in casts with and without chills. It was found that the applied chills influence significantly the hot spots and the remaining part of the cast. Their presence allows to create conditions for solidification of IN-713C nickel superalloy cast without shrinkage defects.

This paper presents results of experimental research concerning the impact of an innovative method of micro-jet cooling on the padding weld performed with MIG welding. Micro-jet cooling is a novel method patented in 2011. It enables to steer the parameters of weld cooling in a precise manner. In addition, various elements which may e.g. enhance hardness or alter tribological properties can be entered into its top surface, depending on the applied cooling gas. The material under study was steel 20MnCr5, which was subject to the welding process with micro-jet cooling and without cooling. Nitrogen was used as a cooling gas. The main parameter of weld assessment was wear intensity. The tests were conducted in a tribological pin-on-disc type position. The following results exhibit growth at approximately 5% in wear resistance of padding welds with micro-jet cooling.

Consecutive casting of bimetallic applies consecutive sequences of pouring of two materials into a sand mold. The outer ring is made of NiHard1, whereas the inner ring is made of nodular cast iron. To enable a consecutive sequence of pouring, an interface plate made of low carbon steel was inserted into the mold and separated the two cavities. After pouring the inner material at the predetermined temperature and the interface had reached the desired temperature, the NiHard1 liquid was then poured immediately into the mold. This study determines the pouring temperature of nodular cast iron and the temperature of the interface plate at which the pouring of white cast iron into the mold should be done. Flushing the interface plate for 2 seconds by flowing nodular cast iron liquid as inner material generated a diffusion bonding between the inner ring and interface plate at pouring temperatures of 1350°C, 1380°C, and 1410°C. The interface was heated up to a maximum temperature of 1242°C, 1260°C, and 1280°C respectively. The subsequent pouring of white cast iron into the mold to form the outer ring at the interface temperature of 1000°C did not produce a sufficient diffusion bonding. Pouring the outer ring at the temperature of 1430°C and at the interface plate temperature of 1125°C produced a sufficient diffusion bonding. The presence of Fe3O2 oxide on the outer surface of the interface material immediately after the interface was heated above 900⁰C has been identified. Good metallurgical bonding was achieved by pouring the inner ring at the temperature of 1380°C, interface temperature of 1125°C and then followed by pouring of the outer ring at 1430⁰C and flushing time of 7 seconds.
