The article presents the results of permeability measurements of a zirconium alcohol coating applied on moulds and cores. The introduction extensively discusses the reasons for the application of protective coatings, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Also, the problems related to the application of protective coatings are presented i.e. limited permeability and thus the possibility of the presence of gas-originated defects in the casts. Next, the paper discusses the methods of measuring the permeability of protective coating proposed by Falęcki and Pacyniak. The study also presents an indirect permeability measurement method. For the investigations, zirconium alcohol coatings with the three conventional viscosities 10, 20 and 30s were used. The viscosity was determined by means of the Ford cup with the clearance of 4mm. The coatings were applied onto profiles of Φ 50x50 mm, made of moulding sand consisting of a sand matrix with the mean grain size of dL = 0,11, 17, 24, 31 and 34 mm and phenol-formaldehyde resin. The effect of the matrix grain size on the permeability of the sand with and without a coating was determined.

This article presents measurements of the thickness of alcohol-based coatings on sand foundry cores and moulds. These coatings were applied using two methods, the dipping method and the painting method. For the purposes of the study, a zircon alcohol-based coating was prepared with three different levels of nominal viscosity; very thin at 10s, average at 20s, and thick at 30s. The coating was applied to a core made of quartz sand and furan resin. The cores were made of sand with three different grain sizes; dL = 0.22 mm – fine sand, dL = 0.33 mm medium sand, and dL = 0.47 mm coarse sand. In the study, the thickness of the coating obtained to the core was measured immediately after application as well as after drying. Additionally, the extent of penetration into the intergranular spaces of the core matrix was measured. On the basis of this study, the impact of the grain size of the core matrix on the thickness of the coating and its penetration into the core was assessed. The thickness of coatings obtained using different application methods was also assessed.

Protective coatings have direct contacts with hot and liquid alloys. As the result of such contacts gases are emitted from coatings. Gas forming is a tendency of the tested material to emit gases under a temperature influence. In order to assess the gas forming tendency either direct or indirect methods are applied. In the hereby work, the measurements of the gas forming tendency were performed under laboratory conditions, by means of the developed indirect method. The research material constituted samples of six selected protective coatings dissolved either in alcohol or in water. These coatings are applied in sand moulds and cores for making cast iron castings. The assessment of their gas forming tendency was presented in relation to temperatures and heating times. The occurrence and changes of oxygen and hydrogen contents in gases outflowing from the measuring flask during tests, were measured by means of gas sensors. The process of the carbon monoxide (CO) emission during tests was also assessed. The following gas sensors were installed in flow-through micro chambers: for oxygen - lambda probe, for hydrogen – pellistor, for carbon monoxide - sensor (dedicated for CO) FIGARO TGS 822 TF. The results of direct CO measurements were recalculated according to the algorithm supplied by the producer of this sensor.

Plasma oxidation, similarly to anodic oxidation (anodizing), are classified as electrochemical surface treatment of metals such as Al, Mg, Ti and their alloys. This type of treatment is used to make surface of castings, plastically processed products, shaped with incremental methods to suitable for certain requirements. The most important role of the micro plasma coating is to protect the metal surface against corrosion. It is well known that coating of aluminium alloys containing silicon using anodic oxidation causes significant difficulties. They are linked to the eutectic nature of this alloy and result in a lack of coverage in silicon-related areas. The coating structure in these areas is discontinuous. In order to eliminate this phenomenon, it is required to apply oxidation coatings using the PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) method. It allows a consistent, crystalline coating to be formed. This study presents the mechanical properties of the coatings applied to Al-Si alloy using the PEO method. As part of the testing, the coating thickness, microhardness and scratch resistance were determined. On the basis of the results obtained, it was concluded that the thickness of the coatings complies with the requirements of conventional anodizing. Additionally, microhardness values exceeded the results obtained with standard methods.

Family of the aluminium alloys with silicon addition is an important group of non-ferrous casting alloys. They exhibit very good technological properties, especially castability. Aluminium alloys are known for their low density, which in connection with high mechanical properties and relatively low price create very good structural material. Magnesium addition to the Al-Si alloys enables their age-hardening, resulting in even better mechanical properties. However, formation of the microstructure of the alloy has to be precisely controlled to avoid formation of massive, brittle silicon crystal. Presence of large, platelet-like particles of silicon, dramatically decreases material mechanical properties. Second factor, which must be taken into consideration is casting porosity, which may significantly decrease fatigue life of the element. Many researches consider effect of modification or refining on the microstructure of the castings made from the Al-Si alloys. However there is lack of detailed investigation on the mould components influence on the microstructure. Such components may be protective coatings applied for the mould sand during the gravity casting of Al-Si alloys. Following paper presents results of the research on the influence of applied mould protective coatings on the microstructure of AlSi7Mg sand cast alloy. Five different protective coatings were applied. Macro observations, qualitative and quantitative microstructure evaluation of the AlSi7Mg alloy was conducted during the researches. Results revealed, that application of the coatings does not influence the size and distribution of the α- Al dendrites, however it influences size of Si particles in a significant way. It was revealed that application of water-based coatings affects the heat flow in the mould material-liquid alloy system, thus causing growth of silicon particles.

Flake graphite cast iron was hot-dip coated with pure aluminium or aluminium alloys (AlSi11 and AlTi5). The study aimed at determining the influence of bath composition on the thickness, microstructure and phase composition of the coatings. The analysis was conducted by means of an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope with an EDS spectrometer. It was found that the overall thickness of a coating was greatly dependent on the chemical composition of a bath. The coatings consisted of an outer layer and an inner intermetallic layer, the latter with two zones and dispersed graphite. In all the cases considered, the zone in the inner intermetallic layer adjacent to the cast iron substrate contained the Al5Fe2 phase with small amount of silicon; the interface between this phase and the cast iron substrate differed substantially, depending on the bath composition. In the coatings produced by hot-dipping in pure aluminium the zone adjacent to the outer layer had a composition similar to that produced from an AlTi5 bath, the Al3Fe phase was identified in this zone. The Al3Fe also contained silicon but its amount was lower than that in the Al5Fe2. In the coatings produced by hot-dipping in AlSi11, the zone adjacent to the outer layer contained the Al3FeSi phase. The analysis results showed that when AlSi11 alloy was applied, the growth mode of the inner layer changed from inwards to outwards. The interface between the Al5Fe2 phase and the cast iron substrate was flat and the zone of this phase was very thin. Locally, there were deep penetrations of the Al5FeSi phase into the outer layer, and the interface between this phase and the outer layer was irregular. Immersion in an AlTi5 bath caused that the inner intermetallic layer was thicker than when pure aluminium or AlSi11 alloy baths were used; also, some porosity was observed in this layer; and finally, the interface between the inner layer and the cast iron substrate was the most irregular.

The results of investigations of humidity migration in near surface layers of sand mould during processes of penetration and drying of protective coatings are presented in the hereby paper. The process of the humidity exchanging between surroundings and moulding sands as porous materials, is widely described in the introduction. In addition, the humidity flow through porous materials, with dividing this process into stages in dependence of the humidity movement mechanism, is presented. Next the desorption process, it means the humidity removal from porous materials, was described. Elements of the drying process intensity as well as the water transport mechanisms at natural and artificial drying were explained. The innovative research stands for measuring resistance changes of porous media due to humidity migrations was applied in investigations. Aqueous zirconium coatings of two apparent viscosities 10s and 30s were used. Viscosity was determined by means of the Ford cup of a mesh clearance of 4mm. Coatings were deposited on cores made of the moulding sand containing sand matrix, of a mean grain size dL = 0.25 mm, and phenol-formaldehyde resin. Pairs of electrodes were placed in the core at depths: 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12 and 16 mm. Resistance measurements were performed in a continuous way. The course of the humidity migration process in the core surface layer after covering it by protective coating was determined during investigations. Investigations were performed in the room where the air temperature was: T = 22 oC but the air humidity was not controlled, as well as in the climatic chamber where the air temperature was: T =35 oC and humidity: H = 45%. During the research, it was shown that the process of penetration (sorption) of moisture into the moulding sand is a gradual process and that the moisture penetrates at least 16 mm into the sand. In the case of the drying (desorption) process, moisture from the near-surface layers of the moulding sand dries out much faster than moisture that has penetrated deeper into the sand.

Podniesienie odporności elementów maszyn i urządzeń na korozję wysokotemperaturową uzyskuje się między innymi stosując powłoki żaroodporne na bazie aluminium. Wytworzenie powłoki dyfuzyjnej o budowie gradientowej sprzyja większej żywotności powłok i jednocześnie elementów zabezpieczanych. Detale bardzo często są odlewane i nie poddawane obróbce mechanicznej. Nałożenie powłoki powinno być możliwe na powierzchni surowego odlewu. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań nad wytwarzaniem ochronnych powłok aluminiowo-krzemowych nakładanych metodą zawiesinową na żarowytrzymałe staliwo GX30NiCrSi30-20, stop niklu Inconel 617 oraz stop tytanu TiAl6V4. Tą samą metodą wytworzono powłoki na różnych podłożach. W celu uzyskania powłok ochronnych zastosowano metodę zawiesinową. W skład zawiesiny wchodzą proszki metali, spoiwo organiczne oraz topnik. Elementy pokryte zawiesiną o tym samym składzie wygrzewano w piecu w atmosferze powietrza w odpowiednim czasie i temperaturze. Otrzymane powłoki posiadają budowę dwustrefową. Uzyskane powłoki poddano badaniom strukturalnym opisującym: budowę strefową i skład chemiczny. Określono również grubość i mikrotwardość powłok.
Increase in high temperature corrosion resistance is achieved, among other things, by application of heat-resisting, aluminum-based coatings. Production of a diffusion coating of gradient structure favors longer life of both coatings and preserved elements. Parts are very often casted and not subjected to machining. Application of a coating should be possible on the raw surface of the casting. This paper presents results of a study of manufacturing of protective Al-Si coatings, applied using the slurry method on a high-temperature creep resisting cast steel GX30NiCrSi30-20, a nickel alloy-Inconel 617 and a titanium alloy TiAl6V4. The same method was used to apply coatings on different surfaces. To obtain protective coatings, the slurry method was used. The slurry is composed of metal powders, an organic binder and a fusing agent. Elements coated with slurry of the same composition were hold in a furnace in air atmosphere, at an appropriate temperature and for an appropriate time period. Obtained coatings have a bizonal structure. The coatings were subjected to structural testing, describing the zonal structure and the chemical constitution. Thickness and microhardness of the coatings were also determined.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badań szybkości schnięcia wybranych powłok ochronnych. Badaniom poddano powłokę wodną WC-R i alkoholową Zirkofluid 1219. Wyznaczono kinetykę wysychania powłok. Powłoki była nanoszono na rdzenie wykonane z masy o średniej wielkości ziarna osnowy dL= 0,24 mm. Ponadto wyznaczono szybkość wysychania powłok dla trzech ich lepkości umownych (11s; 20s; 30s). Lepkość powłok określono przy pomocy kubka „Forda”. Badania szybkości wysychania powłoki ochronnej prowadzono techniką grawimetryczną. Proces wysychanie mierzono w sposób ciągły. Badania prowadzono w kontrolowanych warunkach: stała temperatura otoczenia, wilgotność powietrza. Stwierdzono, iż czas schnięcia powłoki naniesionej na powierzchnie wypukłe (garby formy) jest dużo krótszy niż powłoki naniesionej na powierzchnie wklęsłe (wnęki). Różnice szybkości wysychania wynikają z odmienności warunków wymiany pary wydzielanej z powłoki do otoczenia.
Investigation results of the drying rate of the selected protective water coatings are presented in the paper. The water-based coating WC-R and alcohol-based coating Zirkofluid 1219 were subjected to examinations. They were drying kinetics of these coatings. The coating was applied to the cores of the mass matrix with a grain size of dL = 0.24 mm. In addition, the kinetics of the coating drying process was determined for three apparent viscosities: 11s; 20 s; 30 s. The coating viscosity was estimated by means of the Ford 4 mm cup. Drying rates of the protective coating were examined by using the gravimetric technique. Measurements were carried out in a continuous way under controlled conditions: constant ambient temperature and air humidity. It was found that the drying time of a coating applied to the convex surfaces (humps mould) is much shorter than the coating applied to the surfaces of the concave (cavities). Differences in the rate of drying due to differences in the exchange of a vapour of the coating secreted into the surroundings.

W artykule zawarto wyniki badań powłoki ochronnej ukształtowanej podczas zabiegu cynkowania zanurzeniowego na powierzchni wyrobów ze stali, staliwa oraz żeliwa. Odlewy ze stali i staliwa zostały ocynkowane w warunkach przemysłowych, natomiast odlewy z żeliwa na stanowisku laboratoryjnym w Pracowni Powierzchni Odlewów Katedry Inżynierii Stopów i Kompozytów Odlewanych. W poniższej pracy oceniono jakość i morfologię uzyskanej powłoki ochronnej uzyskanej na poszczególnych wyrobach ze stopów Fe-C oraz odporność na korozję w komorze solnej na próbkach z żeliwa szarego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań stwierdzono, że najcieńsza i najbardziej regularna powłoka cynkowa została ukształtowana na powierzchni stali. Na powierzchni staliwa i żeliwa powłoka miała charakter nieregularny, z wyraźnie zwiększonym udziałem fazy ζ. We wszystkich przypadkach uzyskano zwartą i ciągłą powłokę cynkową.
The article contains the results of the protective coating formed during hot dip galvanizing treatment on the surface of steel, cast steel and cast iron. Zinc coatings are one of the best methods of protection against corrosion of alloys of iron with coal in terms of both economic and ecological aspects. Casts from steel and cast steel were galvanized in industrial conditions, while iron castings in a laboratory at the Laboratory of Surface Engineering Department Casting Alloys and Composites cast. The following study evaluated the quality and morphology of the protective coating on different products obtained from the Fe-C alloys and corrosion resistance in salt spray chamber on samples of cast iron. Based on the studies it was found that the thinnest and most regular zinc coating has been formed on the steel surface. On the surface of cast steel and cast iron coating was irregular, with clearly increased participation phase ζ In all cases obtained compact and continuous zinc coating.

W pracy przedstawiono porównanie mikrostruktury powłoki cynkowej otrzymanej na powierzchni odlewu z żeliwa sferoidalnego gatunku EN-GJS-5007 podczas zabiegu cynkowania zanurzeniowego w procesie „niskotemperaturowym” 450°C oraz „wysokotemperaturowym” 580°C. Zbadano kinetykę wzrostu powłoki cynkowej, zidentyfikowano wzrastające fazy Fe-Zn oraz występowanie wydzieleń „twardego cynku” w powłoce.
The paper presents a comparison of the zinc coating microstructure obtained on EN-GJS-500-7 grade ductile cast iron surface during the hot dip galvanizing in the "low temperature" 450 °C and "high temperature" 580 °C. The kinetics of growth of the zinc coating was investigated. The phases of Fe-Zn and the presence of precipitates "hard zinc" in the coating have been identified.
