Opis:
In this paper, a novel bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) based approach for robust and optimal design of PID controller connected to power system stabilizer (PSS) is proposed for damping low frequency power oscillations of a single machine infinite bus bar (SMIB) power system. This paper attempts to optimize three parameters (Kp, Ki, Kd) of PID-PSS based on foraging behaviour of Escherichia coli bacteria in human intestine. The problem of robustly selecting the parameters of the power system stabilizer is converted to an optimization problem which is solved by a bacterial foraging algorithm with a carefully selected objective function. The eigenvalue analysis and the simulation results obtained for internal and external disturbances for a wide range of operating conditions show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed BFAPSS. Further, the time domain simulation results when compared with those obtained using conventional PSS and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PSS show the superiority of the proposed design.

Opis:
Finding the most critical contingencies in a power system is a difficult task as multiple evaluations of load and generation scenarios are needed. This paper presents a mathematical formulation for selecting, ranking, and grouping the most critical N-1 net- work contingencies, based on the calculation of a Power Constraint Index (PCI) obtained from the Outage Transfer Distribution Factors (OTDF). The results show that the PCI is only affected by the impedance parameter of the transmission network, the topology, and the location of all generators. Other methods, such as the Performance Index (PI) and the Overload Index (OL) are affected by the power generation and demand variations. The proposed mathematical formulation can be useful to accelerate the calculation of other methods that evaluate contingencies in power system planning and operation. Furthermore, the fast calculation of indices makes it suitable for online evaluation and classification of multiple events considering the current topology. The results showed that the proposed algorithm easily selected and ranked the expected contingencies, with the highest values of the index corresponding to the most critical events. In the filtering process, the computational calculation time improved without losing the robustness of the results.

Opis:
A Computational Intelligence (CI) approach is one of the main trending and potent data dealing out and processing instruments to unravel and resolve difficult and hard reliability crisis and it takes an important position in intelligent reliability analysis and management of data. Nevertheless, just few little broad reviews have recapitulated the current attempts of Computational Intelligence (CI) in reliability assessment in power systems. There are many methods in reliability assessment with the aim to prolong the life cycles of a system, to maximize profit and predict the life cycle of assets or systems within an organization especially in electric power distribution systems. Sustaining an uninterrupted electrical energy supply is a pointer of affluence and nationwide growth. The general background of reliability assessment in power system distribution using computational intelligence, some computational intelligence techniques, reliability engineering, literature reviews, theoretical or conceptual frameworks, methods of reliability assessment and conclusions was discussed. The anticipated and proposed technique has the aptitude to significantly reduce the needed period for reliability investigation in distribution networks because the distribution network needs an algorithm that can evaluate, assess, measure and update the reliability indices and system performance within a short time. It can also manage outages data on assets and on the entire system for quick and rapid decisions making as well as can prevent catastrophic failures. Those listed above would be taken care of if the proposed method is utilized. This overview or review may be deemed as valuable assistance for anybody doing research.

Opis:
During a blackout, after the post-disaster collapse of an electric power system (EPS), units of thermal power plants should switch-over to the house load operation mode (PPW). However, regarding the dynamics of a post-disaster blackout process, many units can be in forced outage Therefore, restart of these units from the start-up sources with a self-start capability is necessary. The Transmission Network Code in force imposes periodic tests and system tests for such sources. Any system test must be preceded and followed by simulation investigations in which the possibilities: (1) to bring voltage to the started-up power plant by a starting path and (2) to activate the highest-power auxiliaries (PW) of the unit being started-up are evaluated. In the paper, chosen results of simulative investigations of the transient phenomena in the starting path from the hydroelectric power plant of Włocławek (HPP Włocławek) to the thermal power plant of Pątnów (w (TPP Pątnów), related to the system test conducted in September 2017 have been presented.

Opis:
The grid integration of large-scale wind and solar energy affects the power flow of wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmission systems and may introduce an unpredicted threat to the power system’s small signal stability. Meanwhile, a power system stabilizer (PSS) and static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) play an important role in improving the static and dynamic stability of the system. Based on this scenario and in view of the actual engineering requirements, the framework of wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmitted by an AC/DC system with the PSS and SSSC is established considering the fluctuation of wind and photovoltaic power output and the characteristics of the PSS and SSSC. Afterwards, the situation model is constructed in the IEEE 2-area 4-unit system, and the influence of the PSS and SSSC on the system stability under different operating conditions is analyzed in detail through eigenvalue analysis and time-domain simulation. Finally, an index named the gain rate is defined to describe the improvement of the stability limitations of various wind-PV-thermal operating conditions with the PSS and SSSC. The results indicate (K) that the damping characteristics, dynamic stability and stability limitations for various wind-PV-thermal operating conditions of the wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmission system can be significantly improved by the interaction of the PSS and SSSC.

Opis:
In this paper, the design issue of effective damping of electromechanical swings in a medium voltage network with distributed generation by the use of a PSS2A type power system stabiliser is described. This stabiliser was installed in the generating unit with the highest rated power. Time constants of correction blocks, as well as the main gain, were determined by analyzing a single-machine system, generating unit – infinite bus. The time constants were calculated on the basis of the frequency-phase transfer functions both of the electromagnetic moment to the voltage regulator reference voltage and of the generator voltage to the voltage regulator reference voltage, under the assumption of an infinite and real value of the generating unit inertia time constant for various initial generator loads. The main stabiliser gain was calculated by analyzing the position, on the complex plane, of eigenvalues of the state matrix of the single-machine system, linearised around a steady operating point, at the changed value of this gain.

Electric vehicles (EVs) can be utilized as mobile storages in a power system. The use of battery chargers can cause current harmonics in the supplied AC system. In order to analyze the impact of different EVs with regardto their number and their emission of current harmonics, a generic harmonic current model of EV types was built and implemented in the power system simulation tool PSS®NETOMAC. Based on the measurement data for different types of EVs three standardized harmonic EV models were developed and parametrized. Further, the identified harmonic models are used by the computation of load flow in a modeled, German power distribution system. As a benchmark, a case scenario was studied regarding a high market penetration of EVs in the year 2030 for Germany. The impact of the EV charging on the power distribution system was analyzed and evaluated with valid power quality standards.

This paper deals with a three-phase power system with hybrid transformer (HT) installed between two AC sources. The main aim of this paper is analyze the basic properties of HT with active load and ability to bidirectional energy flow. The HT contains two main units – a conventional transformer with electromagnetic coupling and PWM AC line chopper connected with secondary windings with electric coupling. The HT is located between the distribution system and a Local Balancing Area (LBA) with low power local energy sources. After describing the HT circuit and three-phase, twosources power system, the mathematical and circuit models of the AC source with HT are presented. These models are verified by means of the simulation and experimental test results obtained for a three-phase HT of about 3 kVA rated power.

The paper concerns the assessment of blackout hazards in the power systems. On the basis of statistical data from more than one hundred failures in power systems that affected the world in the last fifty years, the analysis was carried out regarding the number of people affected by a blackout, power losses in the system, duration of a failure and its direct causes. The paper also describes the methodology of risk analysis and vulnerability analysis of the extraordinary events occurrence in electrical power systems resulting in failures. The structure of risk analysis was based on the bow tie model, identifying threats, unwanted events, barriers and consequences of a system failure. Moreover, particular attention was drawn to the impact of the power reserve deficit in the Polish Power System in the coming years on the increase in the risk of a blackout failure.

This paper proposes a power system stabilizer (PSS) with optimal controller parameters for damping low-frequency power oscillations in the power system. A novel meta-heuristic, weighted grey wolf optimizer (GWO) has been proposed, it is a variant of the grey wolf optimizer (GWO). The proposed WGWO algorithm has been executed in the selection of controller parameters of a PSS in a multi-area power system. A two-area four- machine test system has been considered for the performance evaluation of an optimally tuned PSS. A multi-objective function based on system eigenvalues has been minimized for obtained optimal controller parameters. The damping characteristics and eigenvalue location in the proposed approach have been compared with the other state-of-the-art- methods, which illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The aftermath of including new technologies in a modern electric system in conjunction with the incessant rise in power demand could pose a risk to the optimal operation of the system. Therefore, it becomes imperative to identify the most influential and critical nodes of such a system to avert future problems in network operation. In this paper, to identify most significant nodes of the system, the authors propose two measures of centrality in accordance with the network structural properties of a power system, namely, degree centrality (DC) and eigenvector centrality (EC). These are expressed considering the admittance matrix that exists among the interconnection of load to load nodes in an electrical power network. A critical node closeness centrality (CNCC) method is also proposed to identify critical nodes of the system. This is done by modifying the conventional closeness centrality (CC) to include the influence of interconnection that exists between network load to load nodes as captured by the admittance matrix between them. A comparative analysis of the proposed techniques with other conventional methods is also carried out. The result of the simulation shows that the proposed methods could serve as alternative tools in the identification of influential and weak nodes in a power system.

Arresters are widely used in power systems to protect other equipment against overvoltages. However, in some conditions, they can’t operate successfully. One of the disturbances leading to the failure of the riser pole arresters is the ferroresonance overvoltages. In this paper, at first the influence of different transformer simulation models of ATP software on the occurrence of ferroresonance is studied and then the effect of ferroresonance on the riser pole arrester has been scrutinized through the thermal and electrical performance of the arrester in an underground distribution system. The results show that the arrester temperature rises due to energy dissipation in a ferroresonance circumstance, which indeed may result into the explosion of the arrester. Also, applying different models of the transformer in the ATP software and comparing the results, it is shown that the available models do not show the same effect on the arrester.

This stabilising control is activated in the transient state and is supplementary with respect to the main steady-state control designed for power flow regulation. Stabilising control laws, proposed in this paper, have been derived for a linear multi-machine system model using direct Lyapunov method with the aim to maximise the rate of energy dissipation during power swings and therefore maximisation their damping. The proposed control strategy is executed by a multi-loop controller with frequency deviations in all control areas used as the input signals. Validity of the proposed state-variable control has been confirmed by modal analysis and by computer simulation for a multi-machine test system.
