Opis:
Szczecin and its surroundings is outstanding for its varied physiography and is divided into smaller lands. In the lowestpartofthe region, situated 0,5 meters above sea level, called Międzyodrze, the Landscape Park of Dolna Odra Valley was instituted. The slope above the Odra River reaches the valley with sharply shaped highly laid land. The central part has been the basis for the city and its fortifications formation and it is now a kind of visiting-card of Szczecin - the complex of Wały Chrobrego. The northern and southern partsofthe slope, which crossthe city borders, are seen in the river-city relation only occasionally. It is the northern part of the slope between two motorway bridges: Poznańska Motorway and the A6 motorway which was examined. The examination included physiographical conditions of the area, its history and history of villages. Many historical and natural objects of great worth, both commemorative and landscape value, were distinguished. The suggestions of creating a bicycle-path, a foot path and a river route were madę. On height a scenie point was created, which is possible to access by the newly created bicycle-path and easy to get from place to moor by the river route. The point, with wide variety of funetions, enables great visibility to the examined area.

Opis:
The Odra is the second largest river in Poland. The same applies to its basin. It is also one of major European rivers. For over 50 years related research programmes have focused on the economic aspects and pollution. Only recently new perspectives have been developed, emphasising the river's recreational potential and environmental protection. The new approach, integrating flood control with pollution control and environmental protection, has been empasised to foster sustainable growth in the river valley. At present, the principal objectives are: - Flood control. Its importance has been generally acknowledged. In this context, the benefits of the open landscape of the Odra valley cannot be overestimated: it is possible to create large retention areas and retain foold water within the valley to protect densely populated areas. - Pollution control and water retention for consumption and industrial purposes. This is the second most important goal, requiring large investemnts (municipal, industrial and household sewage treatment plants) and a creative planning vision. - Development and promotion of the recreational and tourist potential of the Odra valley. This direction is considered very attractive by local authorities and residents but requires considerable investement to became reality. - Environmental protection. Within the Odra valley, also outside Poland, there are 56 regions (occupying 2000 hectares) of very high natural value. Together with other areas, they form the North-South ecological corridor, second only to that of the Vistula river. - Navigation and power industry. There has been a general agreement about the continued use of the Odra for navigation, roviding that the development of water transport respects the river's hydrogeological conditions. The need to promote the "white fleet", as less harmful to the environment, has been emphasised. Thus, the priorities are clear and generally accepted but so far there is no comprehensive vision of the development of the Oder and its valley. Who will present it?

Opis:
A design concept of Tarasy Odrzańskie (Odra Routes) presented in the article was awarded second prize in a contest for management of the terrains near the Odra River in Neptune Bay in Głogów in May 2008. The analyze of the actual solutions was preceded by theoretical deliberation on the relation between rivers and cities which are situated in the nighbourhood of rivers. It was noticed that the degree of urbanization of river banks varies and depends on the size and character of a city, its history and also the modern needs of its inhabitants. In Głogów, the city the project was designed for, a minimal interference in the natural landscape of many places situated within the limits of the study (i.e. peninsula), leisure and recreation function were proposed, a revalorization of the port buildings in the zone of contact with the city was designed, which existed there long before the Second WorldWar, and moreover there were plans to introduce new objects which would increase the visual and functional attractiveness of the area. The terrains around Neptune bay have a chance to become a green oasis of Głogów and an interesting point on the route to the cities lying near by the Odra river.

Opis:
The geological profile of Quaternary deposits was excavated at the northern district of the city of Wrocław in an artificial ditch of about 200 m long and 6 m deep. Lower part of the profile, starting from the depth of 3,2 m below the surface down to the base of the ditch consisted of light-yellow sand with partly fragmented intercalations of plant debris (0,2 m thick) at the depth of 4,0 m. The lowermost bed of plant debris marks the same level in which numerous logs of sub-fossil oak (Quercus robur) were found. The excavations along the ditch revealed 22 such logs, the thickness of which is in rang of 0,4-1,4 m. They occurred at the depth of 3,9-5,4 m. Morphology, color and qualities of the sub-fossil wood were very good indicators of the changing conditions of the river transport and sedimentation. Among the dendrochronologically analyzed oak samples, two generations of different ages were recognized and local chronologies were produced. The first one was dendrochronologically dated against the Southern Poland oak standard to the period 1796-1526 BC. This dating is in perfect agreement with the earlier produced result of radiocarbon analysis 3180+/-50 BP. The second chronology (4890+/-60 BP and 5000+/-40 BP) indicate that the oaks of that generation grown at the end of the Atlantic Period. Radiocarbon dating also enabled identification of trunks older than 5000 BP (5580+/-40 BP and 5330+/-40 BP), as well as of an age intermediate between these both chronologies (4370+/-50 BP). The analyses carried out indicate that the analyzed profiles contain mostly oak trunks from the Atlantic and Subboreal periods. They enable dating of the youngest part of the alluvial series to around 1500 BC.

Opis:
The landscape of the Odra valley, as we can see now, has been shaped for ages under the influence of some factors for example human activities. This area is being exposed to strong anthropopression and intensely transformed as a result of progressive management. River control, changes in water conditions and excessive exploitation by agriculture and industry have brought natural landscapes in the Odra valley to degradation. The area between Brzeg Dolny and Głogów, the territory of the projected Lubiąsko-Głogowski Landscape Park, is one of the most attractive with regard to its nature and landscape values. Complexes of valuable riparian forests (Salici-Populetum, Ficario-Ulmetum and Galio-Carpinetum)of international importance can be found here. In spite of rich documentation and numerous attempts to create a landscape park on this territory, only a part of it is protected now as Nature 2000 area under the name "Łęgi Odrzańskie". The main task of this article is to show necessity for protection of this area and possibilities for its further evolution on the basis of analyzing the landscape's sensitivity and capacity.

The new law Programme for the Odra River'2006 stipulates turning the cities and towns to face the river and introducing spatial order along the Odra valley. The main objectives are to preserve the continuity of ecological corridors and organise the landscape along the embankments while improving preventive flood control and creating conditions for sustainable development. These objectives have been considered in the plans for extending and modernising the system of embankments and flood control for the town of Nowa Sól. The embankment is to be developed into a boulevard and natural river landscapes with their typical ecosystems are to be recreated. There are plans for the modernisation of the historic port and improvement of navigability.

Opis:
The specificity of the location of Wroclaw in the valley of the Odra river and its four major tributaries (Bystrzyca, Olawa, Sleza, Widawa), distinguishes it from other towns in Poland. The hydrographical network has always heavily influenced the urban landscape, creating an indissoluble bond with him. The objective of the pursued doctoral thesis is to analyze the dynamics of landscape transformation of the Odra in Wroclaw, including the regulation of the river in the XIX century and hydrotechnical facilities, which arose after the big floods in 1903 and 1997. The collected cartographic material will be used such as topographic maps, Messtischblatter, historical town plans, and the results of their landscape research in the years 2007-2010. Spatial analysis will be carried out mainly in the CIS software, based on the developed for this purpose Spatial Information System. The paper will set out the degree of interaction: hydrotechnical development of the Odra river valley and land development in Wroctaw, and the major factors of the urban landscape changes occurring during the past 200 years will be determined.

Opis:
Among numerously preserved cultural heritage of the Odra Valley, which is strongly connected with the river itself, greatest attention should be paid to the relics of modern-area fortifications of Wrocław. They originate from the 19th and 20th centuries, the period of great regulation works and the building of Wrocław Water Junction. This was also a period of touristic and leisure splendor of the Odra River. The course of fortifications of a light annular fortress which was built around the city was decided by its tributaries the Bystrzyca, Oława, Ślęza, Widawa and Czarny Potok. Most of the fortifications with an efficient influence on military functioning of the fortresses in this period had military water dams on the Widawa and Ślęza. They were used to flood the area in the foreground of the fortress at the moment the city was threatened. The external defense ring of the city comprised of small stable fortifications. Water obstacles together with the system of planned masking greenery creating something in the form of a "buckle" and sealing the spaces between fortress buildings. The article comments on the importance of 'military water dams' in the concept of protection of Wrocław Fortress, historical outline of their creation, taking into consideration the present anti-flood system. The connection between them and shaping city suburbs has also been indicated.
