Opis:
The process of conjoined stress cycling and abrasive or erosive wear is encountered in industry. However, very scant attention has been paid till now to this issue. The paper presents two test rigs designed and built to cope with this experimental problem. Tests were carried out on the range of pure iron (Armco), carbon steels namely S235JR, C45, C70U, C80U, C110U and unalloyed cast steels (L40III, L45III and L50III). Tested iron-based alloys differ in chemical composition, microstructure and Brinell hardness ranging from 80HB to 350HB. Stress cycling caused strain hardening of ferrite in hypoeutectoid steels and thus reduced their abrasive wear loss. In the hypereutectoid steel stress cycling impaired integrity of the microstructure thus increasing abrasive wear loss. Alternating stresses enhanced ploughing and cutting micromechanisms of erosion. Tensile stress in the tested cast steel had a stronger effect on wear loss than the prior stress history.

Opis:
Tribological behaviour of coatings obtained from eutectic alloy Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr was studied. The coatings were obtained by the method of gas metal arc welding (GMA) with use of powder wire. GMA welding method is widely used for the regeneration of machine parts. Eutectic Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr alloys can be used to obtain high quality coatings resistant to wear and corrosion. Pin-on-disk dry sliding wear tests at sliding speeds 0.4 m/s and under load 10 MPa were conducted for pin specimens. During friction a typical tribological behavior was observed. The mechanism of wear was mechanical-chemical.

Opis:
The present work investigated the water absorption of thermoplastic matrix composites and their effect on tribological behaviour. Four thermoplastic composites were researched based on Polyamide 6 and Polyamide 66 matrix reinforced with glass fibres. The composites fabricated using the injection moulding technique were immersed in distilled water at room temperature for a water absorption test for 14 days. Dry sliding wear was conducted using a pin-on-disc trbiotester. The coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear rate (K) was determined. The sliding trace was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to reveal the sliding wear mechanism of composites. Studies have shown that polyamide PA6 based composites are less prone to absorb water than PA66 matrix. In addition, the composites richer in fibreglass exhibit lower water absorption. Tribological results indicated that polymer composites showed higher COF and K after water absorption testing. Mean COF and K were in the range of 0.071÷0.321 and 2.51∙10-6÷1.81∙10-4 mm3N-1m-1, respectively. Wear traces SEM analysis revealed that untreated samples are characterized by less intense abrasive and adhesive wear mode than the hydrated polymers. Besides, the degradation process took place primarily at the polymer matrix-fibreglass interfaces.

Opis:
In this work, the authors investigate the optimal tribological parameters of Al 7075 composite reinforced with ZrB2 using Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). Initially, the composite specimens were prepared by the variation of reinforcement 5%, 10% and 15% using stir casting routing method. Further, the developed metal matrix composites are used to measure the wear and frictional properties on pin-on – disc testing apparatus. The input parameters such as, wt% of reinforcement (5%, 10% and 15%), load (4.92N, 9.81N and 14.72N) and the time required for conducting the wear test is (15 min. 30 min and 45 min). A Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was designed for conducting the number of experiments. Based on the combination of number of experiments wear study has been conducted on the wear testing apparatus. Moreover, GRA was used for obtaining the best optimal input control parameters that gives minimum magnitude of wear and coefficient of friction (COF). Finally, the confirmatory experiments are conducted and verified with the Taguchi grey relational analysis. The results shows that the predicated optimal mean value is almost similar to the experimental value.

The wear mechanism of textured dimpled in conditions of lubricated fretting-wear is established, which, in contrast to others, takes into account possibility of removing deterioration products out of tribo-contact areas into dimples, preventing their action as abrasive material. Selection of optimal structural parameters of selectively dimpled areas allows to reduce duration of tribological couple running-in time. Depending on texture type, friction coefficient was reduced from 0.27 (for untreated furface) to 0.18, and wear loss – from 7.8 ×10–3g to 3.3 ×10–3g.

With increased requirements for quality and shelf life of machined parts there is also a higher share of the use of material with specific properties that are identified by the term “superalloys”. These materials differ from common steels by mechanical and physical properties that cause their worse machinability. During machining of “superalloys” worse machinability has negative influence primarily on the amount of cutting edge wear, which shortens durability of the cutting tool. The goal of experimental activity shown in this contribution is to determine individual mechanisms of the cutting edge wear and their effects on the cutting ability during high speed machining of nickel superalloy. A specific exchangeable cutting insert made from cubic boric nitride was used for machining of the 625 material according to ASM 5666F. The criteria to evaluate cutting ability and durability of the cutting tool became selected parameters of surface integrity and quality of the machined surface.

The paper presents an analysis of the surface layer of Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr alloy coating after friction with C45 steel. The coatings were obtained by arc welding (GMA). Flux-cored wires were used as a welding material. The flux-cored wires had a diameter of 2.4 mm. The tribological assessment was performed with the Amsler tribotester under dry friction conditions at unit pressures 10 MPa. The use of XPS spectroscopy allowed deep profile analysis of the surface layer. Based on the obtained results developed model of the surface layer for friction couple, hardfaced coating obtained from Fe-Mn-C-B-Si-Ni-Cr alloy – C45 steel. It was observed that the operational surface layer (OSL) of hardfaced coatings contained oxides (B2O3, SiO2, NiO, Cr2O3, FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3), carbides (Fe3C, Cr7C3) and borides (FeB, Fe2B).

Opis:
Wear resistance is one of the main indicators of the reliability of machine parts. The selection of wear-resistant material should consider the operational environment and specific types of abrasive material. The steel abrasive wear resistance depends not only on its hardness and microstructure but also on the abrasive material's properties, such as hardness and particle morphology. This work aimed to determine abrasion wear mechanisms of a set of steels, i.e., S235, S355, C45, AISI 304 and Hardox 500, abraded by different types of grit i.e. garnet, corundum and carborundum. The abrasion tests were conducted using T-07 tribometer (rubber wheel method). Wear traces were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a contact profilometer. SEM analysis revealed that apart from Hardox 500, ploughing and microfatigue were the dominant wear mechanisms. Microcutting was the main wear mechanism for Hardox 500 tested with carborundum (SiC). The highest mass loss was usually obtained for carborundum. The lowest wear resistance in garnet and carborundum was obtained for the S235JR and S235J2 steels and Hardox 500 tested with corundum. The effect of steel microstructure on the wear mechanism has been confirmed. AISI 304 austenitic steel abraded by carborundum grit, presented outstanding roughness parameters: Ra, Rz, RSm, Rk, Rvk and Rpk than other steels tested with carborundum. Steel hardness affects the morphology of the wear trace reducing the Ra and Rz roughness parameters. The effect of abrasive hardness and grain morphology on abraded surfaces has been stated. Contrary to fine grains of the hardest carborundum, coarse garnet grains caused high roughness parameters (Rk, Rpk and Rvk) determined in wear trace.

This paper evaluates the wear characteristics of hardfacing coatings. Regenerative hardfacing coatings were applied with the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) method. The solid welding wires were used to obtain the coatings marked as: EL-500 HB, EL-650 HB, and EL-3348. The tribological analysis of samples was conducted at room temperature. The wear rate was evaluated with a THT 1000 Anton Parr ball-on-disc tribotester, in accordance with the ASTM G-133 standard. The counterbody (static partner) consisted of balls with the diameter of 6 mm made of Al2O3. The test was performed with the sliding speed of the friction pair 0.4 m/s, track radius 10 mm, normal load 20 N, acquisition rate 10 Hz and sliding distance 2000 m. During the test, the friction coefficient and wear rate were recorded. The multi-criteria assessment of the construction materials discussed, while taking into account five criteria, showed that EL-3348 HB is the best material. Computer applications were used for multi-criteria assessment and statistical processing of data.

Authors have produced new polymer-based composite material DK-6(PT) for substitution of Moglice (Diamant) polymer. We manufactured and used sliding-friction test apparatus (pin-on-disc) capable of testing three specimens simultaneously, much reducing time for the test. The monitoring of the material curing process and the Shore hardness test indicate minor difference from reference material. Measurements were carried out during the curing period, since it is important to know change in this parameter over time. The wear test proved that DK-6(PT) composite in the long-time test has good wear resistance: over 80 km of the friction path, the wear loss of both materials is approximately the same. Furthermore, the friction factor of DK-6(PT) is 5–10% less than that of Moglice. Thus, the studied new polymeric composite may compete with well-known material Moglice and significantly cut the expenses for reconditioning of worn slide ways of metal working equipment.

This paper investigates properties of single- and double-layer pad coatings deposited on cultivator points. The coatings were deposited by manual metal arc welding (MMA) with ESAB OK. 84.58 coated electrodes using an inverter welder, DEDRA DESi201. Tribological properties were determined with a THT 1000 tribometer. A ball-on-disc friction pair was used. Experiments were performed in room temperature, with the sliding speed set equal to 0.3 m/s and two loads: 5 and 20 N. In addition, hardness was measured on the surface and in the cross section of samples by a Rockwell hardness test method (scale C). Surface roughness was measured before and after friction, and post-friction surface topography was examined under microscope. Impact strength tests of the coatings with single- and double layers of pads were performed. The tools and IT algorithms were used to collect and process the results of experimental research.
