    This article presents the disputed history of the authorship of Sarmatiae Europae Descriptio, with scholars’ debates lasting from the 18th century to contemporary times. Some concede to Maciej Stryjkowski’s claim towards Aleksander Gwagnin, who was accused of plagiarism. Others deem Gwagnin’s work as being original. Constructing his text, Gwagnin drew from printed books and manuscripts by Stryjkowski. Some scholars also point out to other resources. Gwagnin’s text is a well of knowledge, which is a compilation of information from many sources. The conceptualisation of the entire work makes form the originality of this work. Paszkowski not only translated the Polish version of Gwagnin’s work, but also added some of excerpts, each time signalling his authorship. It cannot be determined in what capacity he contributed otherwise.

    The paper is to reconstruct the structure and presentation of the issues of Piotr Skarga’s sermons for giving thanks for victory in war. The Royal Preacher preached the following orations: after the victory of Byczyna by Jan Zamoyski in 1588 over Maximilian Habsburg (not printed); after the victory of The Army of John Charles Chodkiewicza of Kircholm over The Army of Charles, Prince of Sudermania in 1605; after the victory of Jan Zamoyski over the Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul) in 1600 and after the capture of Smolensk in 1611 by The Army of Sigismund III Vasa. Orations are made up of motto, exordium, narratio, propositio, argumentatio, part of instructive and conclusio. The paper presents the design of the title, brings the functions of motto; characterized has varied topics of introductions depending on the military situation. Posing the thesis, Skarga spoke about thanksgiving for God’s mercy, about the joy of victory, and regret over the death and suffering of soldiers, and finally about the benefits brought about by military victory. In narratio Skarga presented generally unfavorable circumstances associated with internal victory. The giving of proper thanks as arguments with the enumeration of gifts which received from God to the state and its citizens which Skarga put in argumentatio. He used the topic of exhortation, called to give thanks to God, the army and its commanders. Additionally, Skarga introduced the lecture containing a moral instruction. He condemned the attitude undesirable, calling for penance. In conclusio Skarga invited to worship the holy patrons: Stanislaus, Hedwig, and Wojciech. He expected to fund churches, set up monasteries as a form of thanksgiving. Skarga was reaching for The Bible not only in mottos, but also by building argumentatio. He compared the situation of human figures from Old Testament with the location of the commanders of the army and throughout the Commonwealth. He did not however, attribute the nobility of the state and their messianic role in history.

    Tomasz Zamoyski died on the 8th of January 1638 (born on the 1st of April 1594). The text is a presentation and analysis of four, conceptual and funeral orations, which were written by: Stanisław Szałapski SJ, Bartłomiej Sylwiusz SJ, Marek Korona and Mikołaj Ławrynowicz. The first part of the article is a presentation of conceptual structure of orations and as well as analysis of titles and role of mottos from Bible. The second part of article describes Tomasz Zamoyski’s glowing effigy. Author uses rhetorical scheme laudatio personae, which was constructed from circumstances inner (family stock, ancestors, birth, education, attributes of body and soul, actions) and external (family, friends, descendants, time of his life, types of death). Orators built the glowing effigy of Tomasz Zamoyski, and his life presents a humanistic model of human and citizen.

    Draws attention rich and varied occasional output of Chlebowski, who was a professional writer creating in the first half of the 17th century. However, former researchers accused him of plagiarism at the same time regarding him as a talented compiler. Researches on the Chlebowski’s output are going to lead to recognise his writing technique and expand knowledge about compilation and imitation. Furthermore, the article presents the state of researches on the Chlebowski’s creativity starting from the oldest works of a bibliographic nature (end of the 18th and the 19th century) to the detailed studies, which concern the following issues: Zebrzydowski’s rebellion, political relations with the Grand Duchy of Moscow, hagiographic writings, political relations with Persia and the Ottoman Empire, images of natural disasters, the Tatar invasions and funeral writings. Moreover, the following directions for further studies have been indicated: recognising the biography of the poet; organising and enhancing the knowledge of his works; identification of the community, from the patronage of which Chlebowski benefited as a professional writer; redefinition of the relations between compilation, imitation and Chlebowski’s plagiarism; proving whose library resources the poet benefited from.

    The study is the first part of two-volume review of research methodologies, with the help of which in the last two hundred years the works of Old Polish writers, especially Samuel Twardowski, Marcin Paszkowski, Mikołaj Rej, Jan Kochanowski, Piotr Skarga and Wespazjan Kochowski and others were read and interpreted. I took a look at the history of methodology from the first decades of the 19th century until the outbreak of World War II. The starting point of the study are deliberations devoted to the notion of masterfulness and the rules of shaping the canon of Old Polish literature. After the withdrawal of Rhetoric as the native methodology, with the participation of Old Polish texts, the instruments used to read them became leading in individual periods of literature ideologies and philosophical currents. Thus, the historical interpretation of the literary work was abandoned in favor of adaptive interpretation. I took a look at the works from the panoramas showing the review of the entire Old Polish literature to detailed dissertations, studies, sketches and contributions. These studies took the form of annotated bibliographical lists, historical and literary syntheses, monographs of genres and works of individual authors. The scholars of the Enlightenment were primarily using the bio-bibliographic method. They were trying to give a view to the whole history of Polish literature. The beginnings of the history of Polish literature are connected with concern to the high quality of the Polish literary language. The critical view of literary works is interlaced with the prospect of literature as a tool for teaching history, because in writing could be noticed the so-called state of the nation’s spirit. Examined are structure and style of the works, their impact on collective emotions on the ethical layer and in the sphere of the imagination. Historiosophy played a leading role in shaping the methodology. The analysis includes views and methods of reading literary works used among others by Feliks Bentkowski, Eusebius Słowacki, Kazimierz Brodziński, Adam Mickiewicz, Wacław Aleksander Maciejowski (who based his vision of Old literature on the concept of Hegelian three phrases: folk, national and national-folk), Piotr Chmielowski and Bronisław Chlebowski (both represented Positivistic genetism, the second scientist also used anthropogeographic concept of Karl Ritter), Alexander Brückner, Stanisław Turowski, Ignacy Chrzanowski and Juliusz Nowak-Dłużewski who entered the post-war period. The review presents that for the former researchers more important than the autonomous value of the Old Polish work was functioning of its message according to the needs of the readers of modern times. We owe the work of former scholars preservation of the Old Polish writers’ output for the following generations.
    Studium stanowi część pierwszą dwuczęściowego przeglądu metodologii badawczych, z których pomocą w ciągu minionych dwustu lat odczytywano i interpretowano utwory literatów staropolskich, szczególnie Samuela Twardowskiego, Marcina Paszkowskiego, jak również Mikołaja Reja, Jana Kochanowskiego, Piotra Skargi i Wespazjana Kochowskiego oraz innych. Oglądem objąłem dzieje metodologii od pierwszych dziesięcioleci XIX wieku po wybuch II wojny światowej. Punkt wyjścia stanowią rozważania poświęcone pojęciu arcydzielności oraz regułom kształtowania się kanonu literatury staropolskiej. Jego wyłonienie dokonało się w czasach, gdy dominowało wartościowanie dzieła literackiego. Po odsunięciu retoryki jako macierzystej metodologii, z której udziałem powstawały teksty staropolskie, instrumentarium służącym do ich odczytania stały się wiodące w poszczególnych okresach literackich ideologie i prądy filozoficzne. Porzucono więc interpretację historyczną dzieła literackiego na rzecz interpretacji adaptacyjnej. Oglądem objąłem prace od panoram ukazujących przegląd całego piśmiennictwa staropolskiego po szczegółowe rozprawy, studia, szkice i przyczynki. Opracowania te przybierały formę opatrzonych adnotacjami spisów bibliograficznych, syntez historycznoliterackich, monografii gatunków oraz twórczości poszczególnych autorów. Uczeni doby oświecenia posługiwali się przede wszystkim metodą bio-bibliograficzną. Dążyli do tego, by objąć oglądem całość dziejów literatury polskiej. Początki historii literatury polskiej wiążą się z troską o wysoką jakość literackiej polszczyzny. Krytyczny ogląd dzieł literackich przeplata się z postrzeganiem literatury jako narzędzia nauczania historii, ponieważ w dziełach piśmienniczych dał o sobie znać tzw. stan ducha narodu. Bada się strukturę i styl dzieł, ich oddziaływanie na zbiorowe emocje w warstwie etycznej i w sferze wyobraźni. Znaczącą rolę w kształtowaniu metodologii odgrywała historiozofia. Oglądem objęto poglądy i metody czytania dzieł literackich stosowane m.in. przez Feliksa Bentkowskiego, Euzebiusza Słowackiego, Kazimierza Brodzińskiego, Adama Mickiewicza, Wacława Aleksandra Maciejowskiego (który swą wizję literatury dawnej oparł na koncepcji heglowskich trzech zwrotów: ludowego, narodowego i narodowo-ludowego), Piotra Chmielowskiego, Bronisława Chlebowskiego (obaj reprezentują pozytywistyczny genetyzm, drugi z nich sięgnął dodatkowo do antropogeograficznej koncepcji Karla Rittera), Aleksandra Brücknera, Stanisława Turowskiego, Ignacego Chrzanowskiego i wkraczającego w okres powojenny Juliusza Nowaka-Dłużewskiego. Przegląd uświadamia, że dla dawnych badaczy nie liczyła się autonomiczna wartość dzieła staropolskiego, lecz funkcjonalizacja jego przesłania wedle potrzeb obowiązujących w czasach współczesnych czytającym. Pracy dawnych uczonych zawdzięczamy zachowanie dorobku literatów staropolskich dla kolejnych pokoleń.

    The article is proving that works arisen from the tradition of wishing carol, in which titles appeared a formula „Carol, The New Year and the Generous Day”, constitute a separate literary genre. What is more, works, which belong to it could exist in two forms: unified and cyclical. The genesis of the genre is regarded to appear in combining into one group the motives and symbols of the Christian holidays (from the Christmas through the Circumcision / the New Year to the Epiphany). These types of lyrics were printed from the very beginning to the half of the 17th century. The article therefore is creating the profile of dozen texts saved to our times.

    The article presents the problems caused by the destruction in 1944 of the manuscript containing the copy of Samuel Twardowski’s entitled Wojna domowa z Kozaki i Tatary prepared under the author’s control. For the first part of the work, the basis for the edition must be the edition of the first part from 1660, published under the author’s control. For the second to the fourth part, the Kalisz edition was corrected by Alojzy Kowalkowski’s notes. The edition of Kalisz, as it was censored by the Jesuits from Kalisz for the needs of education in the colleges of the order, cannot constitute the basis for a new edition on its own. We only have the notes of Alojzy Kowalkowski, who compiled the manuscript with the Kalisz edition before World War II. As the individual copies of the Kalisz edition differ, relations between them should be established. Moreover, we do not know whether the burned manuscript was the basis for the Kalisz edition, or whether there is a copy of the work that was directly used by Jesuit printers. In the diocesan archives in Pelplin, the notes of Kowalkowski, which may be a handwritten copy of either a lost manuscript or the Kalisz edition. If they were a copy of the manuscript, could they become the basis for a new edition of parts II–IV of the work?
    Artykuł przedstawia problemy, jakie wywołało zniszczenie w 1944 roku manuskryptu zawierającego sporządzoną pod kontrolą autora kopię dzieła Wojna domowa z Kozaki i Tatary Samuela Twardowskiego. Dla części pierwszej dzieła podstawą edycji musi być wydana pod kontrolą autora edycja części pierwszej z roku 1660. Dla części II–IV edycja kaliska skorygowana notatkami Alojzego Kowalkowskiego. Edycja kaliska, jako że została przez kaliskich jezuitów ocenzurowana dla potrzeb edukacji prowadzonej w kolegiach zakonu, nie może stanowić samodzielnie podstawy nowego wydania. Dysponujemy jedynie notatkami Alojzego Kowalkowskiego, który przed II wojną światową zestawił manuskrypt z edycją kaliską. Ponieważ poszczególne egzemplarze edycji kaliskiej różnią się, należy ustalić relacje między nimi. Nie wiemy ponadto czy spalony manuskrypt był podstawą edycji kaliskiej, czy też istnieje odpis dzieła, z którego wprost korzystali drukarze jezuiccy. W archiwum diecezjalnym w Pelplinie zachowały się notatki Kowalkowskiego, które mogą być odręcznym odpisem albo zaginionego manuskryptu, albo edycji kaliskiej. Czy gdyby były odpisem manuskryptu, mogą stać się podstawą nowego wydania części II–IV utworu?
