Opis:
The paper deals with the broad concept of strangeness in the literary work of Anna Mitgutsch, a contemporary Austrian writer. The topic of strangeness is a keynote in her rich literary output. Mitgutsch’s experience of being abroad (travelling to the Middle East and south-east Asia, living and working in Israel, England, Korea and The USA) is reflected in such novels as Das andere Gesicht, In fremden Städten or Abschied von Jerusalem. Her characters are nomads, people looking for identity and homeland, trying to escape alienation. The feeling of being a stranger is also present in their relations with their loved ones (Die Annäherung).

Opis:
The protagonist of Thomas Mann’s short story "The Clown" ("Der Bajazzo") cannot became an artist because he hasn’t got enough talent. He is also unable to live among people as an ordinary citizen because his social competencies haven’t been completely developed. That is why he can be regarded as a literary figure who tries to leave the real world and to penetrate the literary world. The devil who appears in Charles Gounod’s opera "Faust" based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s drama "Faust" and who is watching the protagonist from the stage during the opera performance seems to be the only person who can help him to find his existential space.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the phenomenon of politically and culturally motivated ideologization that occurred in east and west German translations of Polish literature during the post-war period until 1990. It could be proven on various examples the enormous influence exerted by the political and ideological environment on both translators and the process of translation. Taking into account external intertextual relationships the author shows the way politically and ideologically marked German translations differing from Polish originals are reflected in the internal structure of the target language texts and affect their social functionality.

Opis:
This article focuses on documentary narration in literary prose, which is analyzed with regard to its function and poetics using the example of selected texts of GDR protocol literature and German documentary literature of the post-reunification years. The question of what constitutes the peculiarity of documentary literature and what caused its popularity in the pre- and post-reunification period will be explored. Furthermore, selected examples will be used to illustrate how the levels of the factual and the fictional intermingle and complement each other in the individual texts. The texts discussed in this article are narratives that remain close to factual events, but at the same time fictionalize them and therefore cannot be considered completely and unambiguously in either the category of literary fiction or documentary.

The main focus of this article is an analysis of one of Kurt Lück’s most extensive works – Mythos vom Deutschen in der polnischen Volksüberlieferung und Literatur – published in 1938. The article attempts to answer the question of the status of Lück’s large work of research into the “German East” in the 1930s, and the question of how the work was evaluated by German and Polish historians, ethnologists, and literary critics. The book was also presented in the context of the anti-Polish attitude of the author, whose activities and publications were strongly influenced by National Socialism.

Opis:
The writers of the German Democratic Republic often reached for myths to convey forbidden issues in an oblique way and to deceive the censors. In an interview Heiner Müller admits that this was an attempt to raise crucial questions about socialism: I want neither to write ancient plays today nor to adapt ancient topics. In the early 1960s plays about Stalinism were forbidden. It was necessary to invent such a model to raise really important issues. So that people would recognize them at once. On the basis of the works Philoctetes and The Horatian the reception of two ancient myths will be followed in plays by Heiner Müller. The German playwright employs an interesting strategy: he adopts myths in varied, condensed forms, however, the plot is set in mythical circumstances.Müller does not make an attempt to modernize his dramas by transferring their content into a new setting of space and time, but he draws parallels between past and present. Müller’s plays are in Norbert Otto Eke’s opinion, both historical and contemporary. Interestingly, according to Brecht’s idea and his „alienation effect” the spectator should not identify with the events on stage, but only follow and analyse them. For this reason, the works by Müller can be qualified as didactic.

Opis:
At the end of year 2018, falls the 100th anniversary of outbreak of Greater Poland Uprising 1918/1919 in Prussian Province of Posen. During this jubilee, in the public sphere as well as, to lesser extent in domestic circles, that sacrifice of Polish patriotism from before 100 years, will be commemorated. Official, state proceedings will focus on commemorating the participants of the Uprising. It will pose as an occasion to celebrate and to deposit the wreaths with white-red sashes by the memorials. Flags will be flapping, drumrolls will be beaten and oaths, to never forget the Uprising in the Province of Posen of 1918/19, will be taken in the presence of state and insurrectionary banners. Anniversary proceedings are sure to be accompanied by numerous topical papers which are bound not to slip by the German observers. Therefore, factual, scientific and even literary papers are expected to be published. Anticipated spirit of said jubilee is encapsulated in commemorative poetic works written by the Author of this paper. This study stands as the plane on which the Author engage in Polish-German poetic discourse with German poets, those who witnessed or participated in the events from before 100 years, as well as with contemporary authors associated with Province of Posen in the past or at present.Because of varied emotional charge and political tenor, this lyrical prelude to next year’s 100th anniversary of outbreak of Greater Poland Uprising 1918/1919 and its tone, in collation with its German counterparts, varies from remaining in sharp dissonance to sometimes become a duet or a perfect harmony.
