Opis:
Rosaceae fruit trees are characterized by gametophytic self-incompatibility, with their production typically requiring artificial pollination or pollination tree is required in production. Both of these solutions cause reductions in production efficiency, and self-incompatibility has become a major issue in agricultural biology, and as such, has been extensively studied. In this review, we discuss the relationship between S-RNase content in the style and self-incompatibility, and the role of the SLF gene in stamen-determining factor. Considering mutations in self-compatibility-related genes and self-compatibility in polyploid fruit trees, we discuss the potential mechanisms of self-incompatibility. Based on a preliminary study of the role of pollen tube Ca2+ gradients in self-incompatibility in Pyrus, we propose a new mechanistic model of self-incompatibility taking into account the effect of Ca2+. We also discuss the potential for hormone regulation to be used to control selfincompatibility in Rosaceae fruit trees.

Opis:
Indian jujube (Zizyphus mauritiana Lamk.) is mostly cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Many native and exotic jujube cultivars are grown for fruit production in Pakistan. However, little research work has been conducted on various aspects of jujube i.e. morphological and biochemical characterization of available germplasm. Therefore, fruits of thirteen genotypes were collected to study the biodiversity through physico-chemical analysis during the years 2015 and 2016. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship among various physico-chemical attributes of the jujube through Pearson’s correlation that may have greater importance for breeders during the selection of desirable genotype. The cultivar Foladi had the maximum fruit weight (30.49 g), pulp weight (28.42 g) and fruit diameter (36.75 mm) among all the cultivars. The maximum fruit length was recorded in Umran-13 (45.16 mm), while the maximum seed weight (2.70 g) was found in Dilbahar. Khobani had the maximum TSS (14.92 ºBrix). The highest level of acidity (0.74%) was recorded in Gorh. Akasha had highest vitamin C content (72.53 mg 100 mL–1 juice). The cultivars Sadqia, Umran-13, Mehmood wali, Yazman local and Gorh were much sweeter due to the maximum total sugars content (9.74–10.09%). The maximum antioxidant capacity was measured in Mahmood wali (616.13 mM Trolox 100 mL–1), Pak white (615.02 mM Trolox 100 mL–1) and Seedless (600.46 mM Trolox 100 mL–1), while antioxidant activity was significantly higher in Sadqia (40.604%). The maximum amount of total phenolic content was determined in Umran-13 and Sadqia (243.06 and 239.25 µg GAE mL–1 juice, respectively). The highly significant correlation (0.99) was observed between the fruit weight and pulp weight. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content were also strongly correlated (0.70). Principal component analysis was made to determine the relationship among the genotypes and their variables. Dendrogram constructed on the basis of morphological attributes, divided 13 genotypes into four main clusters. Among the cultivars, Khobani and Mehmood wali share the maximum similarity (78%). Biochemical characteristics also divided the genotypes into three main clusters. The cultivars Pak white and Seedless had the maximum similarity (75%) among all the cultivars.

Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) is the most important and widespread virus infecting brassicas worldwide. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, twenty-three cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) breeding lines from Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute (BSARI, Samsun, Turkey) were screened for their reaction to TuMV-BA isolate by mechanical inoculation under controlled conditions. On the basis of 0–5 disease rating scale and ELISA, of the lines tested, nine (39.1%) were categorized as highly resistant (Grade 1), one (4.3%) as resistant (Grade 2), seven (30.4%) as moderately resistant (Grade 3), however, two cabbage lines and four lines were found moderately susceptible and susceptible, respectively to TuMV-BA isolate under controlled conditions. The results suggested that Brassica oleracea L. from the BSARI contain valuable breeding lines resistant to TuMV, and the screened breeding lines in the current study could provide promising resistance sources for cabbage breeding.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is an important crop due to its cultivation as staple food for millions of small farmers as well as for poor people in Latin America, Asia, Africa and in many other parts of the world. This tuberous crop is susceptible to drought stress especially during the period of crop establishment as well as vine development and tuber initiation. Yield of the crop vary widely among farmers due to improper planting systems. This current study was aimed to investigate the influence of various irrigation intervals and planting systems on vegetative growth, storage root yield and quality of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) cv. ‘White star’ under field conditions. Three irrigation intervals (7, 14 and 21 days for summer crop, and 14, 28 and 42 days for winter crop) and two planting systems (bed planting and ridge planting) were adopted in this study. Vine length, number of branches and average leaf area significantly reduced as the irrigation interval was increased. Ridge planting produced longer vines with greater leaf area in winter crop as compared to bed planting. Yield parameters (storage root length, storage root diameter, number and fresh weight of marketable roots per plant) were directly linked with vegetative growth especially in summer crop. Under water stress conditions, as vegetative growth decreased storage root yield was also reduced. However, yield attributes were not affected by the planting systems. Vitamin C content decreased with water stress, whereas total soluble solids (TSS) and leaf proline content significantly increased with water stress in summer crop. Ridge planting also resulted in increased leaf proline content in summer crop. It is concluded that for attaining good vegetative growth and storage root yield, sweet potato should be irrigated at an interval of 7 days during summer and 14 days during winter crop and planted on ridges.

One of the ways to reduce the water consumption by plants while maintaining their proper quality is to use substances that limit excessive transpiration. Three preparations at following concentrations: Moisturin (10%), Root-Zone (4.5%) and Vapor Gard (1%), were used in the experiment. Moisturin and Vapor Gard were applied in the form of a single spray, and Root-Zone as a single irrigation in mid July. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of several anti-transpirants on some biometric features of the ‘Tardiva’ panicled hydrangea depending on the frequency of irrigation. The following parameters were measured: area, perimeter, width and length of leaf blade, length and width of inflorescences, and the diameter of shoots. Treatment of H. paniculata cv. ‘Tardiva’ with Root-Zone and Moisturin anti-transpirants with a single irrigation every other day allows to reduce the water consumption and obtain shrubs of a quality comparable with plants irrigated twice a day. The use of Moisturin with a twice daily irrigation positively affected the length and width of inflorescences.

Hyperhydricity is a frequently problem in plants during in vitro culture and affected micropropagation of plants. To develop an efficient in vitro regenerated system without hyperdydricity, we demonstrated the effect of different disinfected agents (mercuric chlorite and hypochlorite), growth regulators, their concentrations and combinations, Agar, pH, ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) and number of subcultures. Mercuric chlorite at 0.07% and exposing time (9–10 min) was appropriate for hygienic culture. The shoots induced by Benzyladnine (BA) alone or in combination with α-Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) exhibited maximum multiplication with symptoms of hyperhydricity than those induced by Kinetin alone or in combination with NAA. Hyperhydricity was also reduced by increasing the concentration of agar, pH and elimination of NH₄NO₃ from the macroelements of Murashig and Skoog (MS) medium. Repeated subcultures affected both multiplication and hyperhydricity. The multiplication of shoots increased from parental culture up to 5th subculture and thereafter declined in 6th subculture. Although shoot hyperhydricity were observed from 1st subculture (19%) and then increased up to 85% in 6th subculture. This increased in hyperhydricity could be due to the remaining influence of hormones. In shoots of 5th subculture the content of chlorophyll (dark green) were higher than shoots of 6th subculture.

Opis:
The present study investigates the potential of seed priming for induction of salt tolerance in French marigold at early growth stage. Treatments were combination of priming techniques viz. hydropriming, halopriming (50 mM CaCl2), hormonal priming with salicylic acid (100 ppm) and ascorbate priming (100 ppm) each for 24 h. Primed seeds were exposed to salinity levels (0; 50 and 100 mM NaCl) during germination and emergence assays. All priming treatments hastened germination and emergence attributes under saline or non-saline conditions as compared to those of non-primed (control) seeds. Seeds of French marigold primed with ascorbate followed by CaCl2, salicylic acid and hydropriming enhanced final germination, speed of germination, root and shoot length and dry mass of French marigold seedlings. This was interpreted by minimized mean emergence time and time to 50% emergence. Additionally, it was also observed that all priming agents particularly calcium salt and ascorbate maintained ionic homeostasis in salt stressed seedlings. It is concluded that CaCl2, ascorbate and salicylic acid were the most effective priming agents to ameliorate the adverse effects of salinity in French marigold due to lower uptake of Na+ and higher uptake of K+ in the seedlings.

Punjab selection produced significantly greater number of flowers and pods per plant as compared to other two cultivars. Seed germination (%), plant height, and fruit set (%) were not affected by the cultivars. Among the PGR treatments, seed primed with GA3 resulted in significantly higher germination percentage and greater plant height at flowering. Seed priming and foliar spray with NAA and GA3 were effective in increasing the final plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and number of pods per plant and fruit set (%), fresh weight per pod and pod yield. However, pod diameter, pod moisture content and dry weight per pod were not influenced by the PGR treatments applied. These results suggested that the PGRs have great potential to improve seed germination, enhance growth and increase yield of okra cultivars under calcareous soils.

Opis:
Based on a three-year field experiment under controlled condition in Ji’nan, China, the effects of peanut growth on the variation in the abundance and community structure of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) before and after peanut growth were investigated through quantitative PCR and cluster analysis of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Our results show that the community composition of AOA and AOB was greatly affected by the peanut growth leading to the decreased abundance of AOA and increased abundance of AOB. Furthermore, AOA and AOB community structures varied before and after peanut growth. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all AOA and AOB community sequences were clustered into the uncultured group. Altogether, the results suggested that the abundance of AOA and AOB in soil and their community compositions can be greatly affected by the peanut growth.
