In the present work, genetic diversity in nutritional composition of sixteen plum genotypes growing at four different locations of Tehsil Rawalakot, District Poonch of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistan) were studied. Various parameters like moisture, dry matter, ash and total soluble solids contents, acidity, pH, vitamin C and sugar content, shelf-life and sensory/organoleptic evaluation, anthocyanins, phenolics and antioxidant activity were evaluated and variation in these characteristics has been discussed. The results suggested that the genotypes differed in their nutritional composition of fruits, anthocyanin and phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of fruit. The results of the present study regarding the nutritional status of existing plum germplasm will contribute and increase our knowledge about the genus Prunus and broaden the gene pool available for future plant breeding programs.
Badano różnorodność genetyczną w składzie odżywczym szesnastu genotypów śliw rosnących w różnych miejscach Tehsil Rawalakot, Dystrykt Poonch w Azad Jammu i Kashmirze (Pakistan). Oceniono różne parametry, takie jak wilgotność, zawartość popiołu, suchej masy i całkowitą zawartość rozpuszczalnych substancji stałych, kwasowość, pH, zawartość witaminy C, cukru, antocyjanów i fenoli, okres trwałości, cechy sensoryczne/organoleptyczne, a także omówiono zróżnicowanie tych cech. Na podstawie wyników można stwierdzić, że genotypy różniły się składem odżywczym, zawartością antocyjan i fenoli oraz zdolnością antyoksydacyjną owoców. Wyniki badania dotyczące składników odżywczych istniejącej germplazmy przyczynią się do pogłębienia wiedzy na temat gatunku Prunus oraz poszerzą pule genową dostępną dla przyszłych programów hodowli roślin.

Wild raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) is abundantly grown and widely distributed in temperate regions of lower Himalayan range which represents rich biological diversity for raspberry. Thirty accessions were explored from three different locations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistan), several traits were visualized at sampling locations and some characteristics were evaluated and quantified after harvest of leaf and fruit samples. The accessions differed greatly in growth habit, blooming time, intensity of flowering, fruit setting, ripening time, productivity, fruit shape and color. Concerning quantitative characteristics, significant differences were found in plant height, leaf length and width, number of braches per plant, duration of flowering, fruit setting percentage, days to maturity, fruit length, width and weight among the samples collected from different locations. Ripe fruits were evaluated for their chemical composition i.e. moisture, carbohydrates, protein, fat, fiber, ash, TSS, acidity, pH and mineral (K, Ca, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, and Cr) contents. The location also had significant effect on chemical composition of ripe fruits.
Malina właściwa (Rubus idaeus L.) jest często hodowana i szeroko rozprowadzana w umiarkowanych rejonach niższego pasma Himalajów, które reprezentuje bogatą różnorodność biologiczną malin. Zbadano trzydzieści próbek z trzech różnych miejsc Azad Jammu i Kaszmiru (Pakistan), dokonano wizualizacji kilkunastu cech w miejscach pobierania próbek oraz oceniono i ilościowo określono kilka cech po zebraniu próbek liści i owoców. Próbki znacznie różniły się wzrostem, czasem kwitnienia, intensywnością zakwitania, zawiązywaniem owoców, czasem dojrzewania, plonowaniem oraz kształtem i kolorem owoców. Jeśli chodzi o cechy ilościowe, to stwierdzono istotne różnice w wysokości roślin, długości i szerokości liści, liczbie gałązek na roślinie, długości kwitnienia, procencie zawiązywanych owoców, liczbie dni do dojrzałości, długości owoców, szerokości i wadze pomiędzy próbkami zebranymi z różnych stanowisk. Dojrzałe owoce oceniono pod względem składu chemicznego, tzn. wilgotności, zawartości węglowodanów, białka, tłuszczu, błonnika, popiołu, TSS, kwasowości, pH oraz zawartości minerałów (K, Ca, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb oraz Cr). Stanowisko także miało istotny wpływ na skład chemiczny dojrzałych owoców.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is an important crop due to its cultivation as staple food for millions of small farmers as well as for poor people in Latin America, Asia, Africa and in many other parts of the world. This tuberous crop is susceptible to drought stress especially during the period of crop establishment as well as vine development and tuber initiation. Yield of the crop vary widely among farmers due to improper planting systems. This current study was aimed to investigate the influence of various irrigation intervals and planting systems on vegetative growth, storage root yield and quality of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) cv. ‘White star’ under field conditions. Three irrigation intervals (7, 14 and 21 days for summer crop, and 14, 28 and 42 days for winter crop) and two planting systems (bed planting and ridge planting) were adopted in this study. Vine length, number of branches and average leaf area significantly reduced as the irrigation interval was increased. Ridge planting produced longer vines with greater leaf area in winter crop as compared to bed planting. Yield parameters (storage root length, storage root diameter, number and fresh weight of marketable roots per plant) were directly linked with vegetative growth especially in summer crop. Under water stress conditions, as vegetative growth decreased storage root yield was also reduced. However, yield attributes were not affected by the planting systems. Vitamin C content decreased with water stress, whereas total soluble solids (TSS) and leaf proline content significantly increased with water stress in summer crop. Ridge planting also resulted in increased leaf proline content in summer crop. It is concluded that for attaining good vegetative growth and storage root yield, sweet potato should be irrigated at an interval of 7 days during summer and 14 days during winter crop and planted on ridges.

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied through seed priming and foliar spray on growth and yield of three okra cultivars grown under calcareous soils. The cultivars of Punjab Selection and Sabzpari produced significantly higher number of branches and leaves per plant, pod length and diameter and pod yield as compared to cv. Green ferry, while, cv. Punjab selection produced significantly greater number of flowers and pods per plant as compared to other two cultivars. Seed germination (%), plant height, and fruit set (%) were not affected by the cultivars. Among the PGR treatments, seed primed with GA3 resulted in significantly higher germination percentage and greater plant height at flowering. Seed priming and foliar spray with NAA and GA3 were effective in increasing the final plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and number of pods per plant and fruit set (%), fresh weight per pod and pod yield. However, pod diameter, pod moisture content and dry weight per pod were not influenced by the PGR treatments applied. These results suggested that the PGRs have great potential to improve seed germination, enhance growth and increase yield of okra cultivars under calcareous soils.

The potential agricultural lands are falling prey to salinity in the world over including Pakistan. The limited water supply is also becoming a serious problem to feed the humans and livestock production. Therefore, research studies were undertaken to enhance the growth and development of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) on saline soils to increase productively of crop. The treatments consisted of (a) two lines of sunflower (Hysun-33 and LG-56-63), (b) two levels of salinity (0, 120 mM (NaCl)) and (c) two levels of salicylic acid (0, 200 mg L-1) and were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. The results showed that biological yield was significantly reduced due to imposition of salinity at the rate of 120 mM (NaCl) on both sunflower lines (Hysun -33, LG 56-63). The stem length was also reduced due to decrease in biological yield in response to salinity. However, the exogenous application of salicylic acid at the rate of 200 mg L-1 mitigated the adverse effects of salts and improved the biological yield and stem length under saline and non-saline environments. The quantity of chlorophyll (SPAD) values were impacted negatively in response to salt stress, however, the phenomenon was recovered by foliar spray of salicylic acid. The nutrient concentration of K+, Cl- and Na+ were altered because of presence of excess quantity of NaCl in the substrate. The translocation of K+ ion was reduced substantially, while higher amount of Na+ and Cl- ions were absorbed, thus creating ionic imbalance in the plant system. The foliar spray of salicylic acid (200 mg L-1) enhanced the uptake of K+ from the soil medium. The salicylic acid proved a potential phytoprotectant to mitigate the adverse effects of salinity and thereby improving the physiological and biochemicals attributes, stem length and also enhanced uptake of K+ ion while depressing Na+ and Cl- ions in plant system.

Opis:
Information on the spatial variability in plant disease is essential for location-based disease management. In the current study, the spatial distribution of tomato early blight disease was ascertained in District Gilgit, GilgitBaltistan, Pakistan. The comprehensive field survey was carried in two growing seasons (2014–2015), whereas in each growing season, 62 tomato fields were surveyed. Based on the distribution of disease, the respective thematic maps (incidence and severity) were prepared using Arc Map 10.1 with spatial analyst function of Arc GIS software by means of the inverse distance weight (IDW) interpolation method. Results indicate that early blight of tomato is spatially distributed in both growing seasons. However, in the first growing season, the disease incidence ranged from 10.22% to 44.16% and during later season 14.03–49.16%, whereas 5.37–16.40% and 6.52–26.94% severity was recorded. Furthermore, this information indicates that higher disease infestation occurred in 2015 in relation to 2014. This information linked to metrological data (temperature, precipitation and relative humidity), seemingly favored the early blight development during the growing period. Seven botanical extracts were tested against pathogen Alternaria solani at different concentrations (4, 6 and 8%). Results revealed that all tested plant extracts showed antifungal activities. However, at 8% concentration of plant extract, Datura starmonium, Berberis orthobotry, Podophyllum emodi and Uretica dioica exhibited >60%, while Peganum harmala, Artemisia maritima and Capparis spinosa <60% antifungal properties. The information generated due to this study could help the tomato growers regarding disease management and selection of resistant cultivars, improving profitability and food security in the Gilgit region.

Tomato is well known regarding its quality and nutritional value in all over the world but imbalances of fertilizer nutrients severely affect the quality of tomato. To investigate the specific contribution of potassium to yield and quality of tomato, a field experiment was conducted on two tomato cultivars, Nagina and Roma. Foliar application with varying levels (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0%) of potassium solutions was applied to the plants and compared with control (without K). Exogenous application of 0.6% K significantly improved plant height, lycopene content, potassium, fruit weight and diameter. Exogenous application of 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7% K maximally improved ascorbic acid contents of both tomato cultivars whereas 0.4 and 0.8% did not improve ascorbic acid contents. Due to positive correlation between K nutrition and fruit quality attributes, exogenous application of an appropriate K level can contribute to higher yield and better quality of tomato fruits. Among all potassium levels, 0.5–0.7% K maximally improved performance of tomato plants of both cultivars.
Pomidor to dobrze znane na całym świecie źródło składników odżywczych, ale brak równowagi substancji odżywczych w nawozach wpływa na jego jakość. Doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono na dwóch odmianach pomidora, Nagina i Roma, w celu zbadania wpływu potasu na plon i jakość pomidora. Roztwory potasu w różnych dawkach (0,1; 0,2; 0,3; 0,4; 0,5; 0,6; 0,7; 0,8; 0,9 oraz 1,0%) zastosowano dolistnie i porównano z kontrolą (bez K). Egzogenne zastosowanie 0,6% K istotnie poprawiło wysokość roślin, zawartość likopenu, zawartość potasu, a także wagę i średnicę owoców. Egzogenne zastosowanie 0,5, 0,6 i 0,7% K maksymalnie poprawiło zwartość kwasu askorbinowego w obydwu odmianach, natomiast zastosowanie 0,4 i 0,8% nie wywołało takiego efektu. Ze względu na pozytywną korelację między odżywianiem K a jakością owoców, egzogenne zastosowanie właściwego poziomu K może przyczynić się do wyższego plonu i lepszej jakości owoców pomidora. Spośród wszystkich poziomów potasu, 0,5–0,7% K w sposób maksymalny poprawiał wydajność roślin pomidora obu odmian.

A total of 96 indigenous Brassica rapa accessions were collected from different locations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers were used to identify the most diverse genotypes among the collected lots. Twenty six (26) different SSR primers were used for (genetic) variability among collected genotypes. These primers were selected from literature based on their previous results. These primers produced 135 scorable bands of which 75 were polymorphic, with an average of 55.5% polymorphic loci, and reflected the broader genetic background of the collected genotypes. An average 2.88 polymorphic bands with an average PIC value of 0.49 was recorded. Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) divided all genotypes into three main groups. Group one contained three clusters, while group two and three had four and two clusters each. Based on the UPGMA dendrogram, genotypes collected from Kohat, Bannu, Swat and Haripur showed considerable amount of variation. From the present study, it is concluded that SSR markers can be proved as the best tool for the genetic variability of other local and exotic B. rapa genotypes.

Sweet orange fruits were exposed to vapor heat treatment (50°C) in water bath for 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min in plastic covered structure. The data were recorded on different physico chemical factors immediately after the storage and after seven days simulated marketing under ambient condition (20°C). Low temperature storage enhanced weight loss, surface pitting, disease incidence, total soluble solids accumulation, TSS/Acid ratio but decreased reducing sugars, acidity and ascorbic acid content. Chilling exposure up to 45 days had no significant effect on weight loss and TSS. However, increased weight loss (2.63%), TSS (11.75), TSS/Acid ratio (8.45 ºBrix), disease incidence (8.93%) and lowest reducing sugars (3.90) were noted in sweet orange exposed to chilling temperature for 75 days. Among the VHT durations, the highest weight loss (2.29%) was found in VHT for 0 min while the highest TSS (11.81 ºBrix), TSS/Acid ratio (8.10) and disease incidence (6.22%) and least reducing sugars (4.12%) were found in VHT 20 for min. Vapor heat treatment ranging from 5–10 min resulted in lowest weight loss (1.79%), TSS (10.81 ºBrix) TSS/Acid ratio (7.33), disease incidence (1.00%) and highest reducing sugars (4.75%) in sweet orange fruits. However, non-reducing sugars were least affected by both LTSs and VHTs. It is concluded that the chilling exposure (5°C) beyond 45 days aggravated the decline of fruit physio-chemical quality characteristics. Whereas, VHT with 5–10 min maintained the sweet orange fruit quality during simulated marketing; however, VHT of 15–20 min adversely affected the sweet orange fruit quality attributes.
