Opis:
Vitamin C performs many functions in the human body and is very important for its proper functioning. The main vitamin C sources in the human diet are fruits and vegetables. Changes of total content of vitamin C (Tc), L-ascorbic acid (AA) and dehydroL-ascorbic acid (DHA) in selected fruits and vegetables during storage at 20°C until spoilage were determined. A decrease of Tc and AA contents and an increase of DHA concentration were noted. Products of high acidity such as lemon and tomato were characterized by the highest retention of vitamin C. An increase of the DHA to Tc ratio (%) was observed. On the first day of storage the DHA/Tc ratio was higher than 10% in broccoli, cucumber and banana, while on the last day – it amounted over 40% in banana and cucumber, between 20 and 40% in parsley leaves and broccoli, and below 20% in tomato, cauliflower and lemon. In order to obtain correct results of vitamin C determination in fruits and vegetables it is necessary to take DHA content into consideration.
Określono zmiany całkowitej zawartości witaminy C, kwasu L-askorbinowego i kwasu dehydro-L-askorbinowego w wybranych owocach (banan, cytryna) i warzywach (brokuł, kalafior, ogórek, pomidor, natka pietruszki) podczas przechowywania w 20o C aż do nieprzydatności do spożycia. W celu otrzymania poprawnych wyników oznaczania zawartości witaminy C w owocach i warzywach zastosowane metody muszą uwzględniać zawartość kwasu dehydro-L-askorbinowego.

Opis:
Nutritional and nutraceutical quality of sprouts is strongly affected by growth conditions. This study focused on determining the influence of breeding density on seedling growth, phenolics content and some antioxidant capacity of ready-to-eat lentil sprouts. Content of condensed tannins (ranging from 1.77 to 3.16 mg g-1 DM) and flavonoids (ranging from 15.13 to 25.08 mg g-1 DM) increased with the increasing density of breeding. The contents of the p-hydroxybenzoic and ferulic acids, and (+) catechin decreased with the increasing density of breeding in 3-days-old seedlings. Additionally, the level of quercetin was elevated at a higher degree in sprouts cultivated at density of 1.22 seeds per cm2 and average 10.42 and 5.91 ȝg g-1 DM for 3- and 4-days-old sprouts, respectively. Metal chelating ability was the highest for sprouts obtained at the lowest density: 92% and 86% for 3- and 4-days-old sprouts, respectively. Fresh mass yield and lipids preventing abilities were negatively affected by density of breeding. It can be concluded that density of breeding plays an important role in design of chemical composition and bioactivity of lentil sprouts.
Warunki hodowli ściśle determinują wartość odżywczą i potencjał nutraceutyczny kiełków.

It is commonly believed that gall inducers have the ability to control and program the host plant growth to their own benefit. The pattern of changes in the contents of reducing sugars, protein and phenolic compounds as well as the activity of chitinase and β-1,3-glucanase in galls, galled and intact leaves of Ulmus pumila were investigated during three stages of Tetraneura ulmi gall development. High protein accumulation in galls at the initial period of gall formation, increased biosynthesis of total phenolics during galling process, and the highest activity of pathogenesis-related protein at the stage of mature galls were detected. Therefore, it can be suggested that T. ulmi can manipulate the biochemical machinery of the galls for its own needs.

Opis:
Poor seed germination is a main hindrance to the commercial cultivation of Zinnia (Zinnia elegans Jacq.). Seed enhancement is a useful strategy to improve germination of major agronomic and horticultural crops. A lab study was conducted to investigate the potential of magnetic seed stimulation as a seed enhancement tool and its influence on germination and emergence capacity of zinnia. Magnetic seed treatment with 50, 100 and 150 mT strength each for 5, 10 and 15 min was compared with control (untreated). Magnetic seed stimulation reduced time to 50% germination and mean germination time and increased final germination percentage, germination energy and germination index. Root length, shoot length, seedling fresh and dry weight was also increased as a result of magnetic seed stimulation. Furthermore, magnetic field treatment also enhanced α-amylase activity, total soluble sugars and reducing sugars levels. Among all seed treatments, magnetic field with strength of 100 mT for 15 min was the most effective physical treatment for improving seed germination and seedling growth of zinnia.
Magnetyczna stymulacja nasion zmniejszyła do 50% czas kiełkowania i średni czas kiełkowania oraz zwiększyła ostateczny procent kiełkowania, energię kiełkowania i wskaźnik kiełkowania.

The study aimed to determine the most appropriate irrigation scheduling for mini-type cucumber plants grown as a spring-summer cycle crop. The research was conducted in a greenhouse structure in the fields of the Research Institute in Kirklareli. Marathon cucumber plants were used as the plant material in the trials. The split plot design experimental layout in 3 replications was used in the research. Four different plant–pan coefficients (0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50) and two irrigation intervals (2 and 4 days) were applied as subplots and main plots of the study, respectively. As a result of the 3-year investigation, it was determined that yields, number of cucumber fruits, and fresh cucumber fruit weight, length and diameter increased with the increase in the irrigation water amount. The highest average total soluble solids (Brix) value of 5.0 was recorded under conditions of most severe stress imposed on the plots with lowest water application rates of Kcp 0.75. While the lowest values of 4.0–4.1 were obtained for plants growing under more favorable moisture conditions in plots with application of Kcp 1.25 and 1.50. Statistically significant positive linear relationships were obtained for irrigation water amount on one hand, and fruit number, fruit mean weight, fruit length and diameter on the other, while the relationship between water applied and TSS (Brix) was negative.

Opis:
The main aim of the study was to investigate the viability of pollen of a boreal relict, Salix lapponum, an endangered species in Poland as well as to evaluate the possibility to introduce the plant into a tissue culture. Two approaches were taken to estimate pollen viability: staining pollen with dyes and in vitro germination assay. The study results showed high pollen viability of the species, with regard to both fresh pollen and pollen stored for 12 months. The effectiveness of pollen tube growth was also found to be largely dependent on glucose content in a medium and thermal conditions. The study results have provided necessary information on the most optimal combinations for pollen germination of boreal willow in artificial conditions. The research on tissue culture initiation of S. lapponumwas also undertaken. The most contamination free explants were obtained, when the shoot pieces had been soaked in a solution of fungicides, followed by the dip in 70% alcohol and surface disinfected in 2% NaOCl for 30 minutes. The most good quality shoots were obtained on the MS media supplemented with 0.1 mg·dm-3 BA and 0.01 mg·dm-3 IBA.
Najwięcej eksplantatów bez objawów zakażenia uzyskano, gdy fragmenty pędów moczone były w mieszaninie fungicydów, zanurzane w 70% roztworze alkoholu i odkażane powierzchniowo 2% NaOCl przez 30 min. Najwięcej dobrej jakości pędów uzyskano na pożywce MS, uzupełnionej 0,1 mg·dm-3 BA i 0,01 mg·dm-3 IBA

Early maturing peach (Prunus persica) cultivars can fetch good market value but face a lot of post-harvest problems that lead to the post-harvest losses. The 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) can provide new insights into plant ethylene responses and extend the shelf life and quality of fruits. Therefore, fruits of peach cultivar ‘Early Grand’ were dipped in various concentrations of 1-MCP (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 µg l–1), stored for 40 days at 8 ±2°C with 50% relative humidity and analyzed the fruits for physicochemical attributes at 10 days interval. The highest concentration of 1-MCP at 0.9 µg l–1 significantly improved the activity of antioxidants, catalase, free radical scavenging assay and total phenols. However, the peach fruits treated with 1MCP at 0.6 µgL–1 was effective in retaining the ascorbic acid, lowering the weight loss and fruit decay. Therefore, peach fruits can be treated with 1-MCP (0.6 µg l–1) solution for prolonging its shelf life up to 40 days under low temperature.

A total of 96 indigenous Brassica rapa accessions were collected from different locations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers were used to identify the most diverse genotypes among the collected lots. Twenty six (26) different SSR primers were used for (genetic) variability among collected genotypes. These primers were selected from literature based on their previous results. These primers produced 135 scorable bands of which 75 were polymorphic, with an average of 55.5% polymorphic loci, and reflected the broader genetic background of the collected genotypes. An average 2.88 polymorphic bands with an average PIC value of 0.49 was recorded. Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) divided all genotypes into three main groups. Group one contained three clusters, while group two and three had four and two clusters each. Based on the UPGMA dendrogram, genotypes collected from Kohat, Bannu, Swat and Haripur showed considerable amount of variation. From the present study, it is concluded that SSR markers can be proved as the best tool for the genetic variability of other local and exotic B. rapa genotypes.

Opis:
Xeriscaping focus on the use of drought tolerant species of plants for environmental sustainability leading to the conservation of natural resources. We need to look for drought tolerant, water efficient plant species. Present research was aimed to assess the water use efficiency of Leucophyllum frutescens (silvery) for its adaptability and potential as xerophyte. In this study, seven treatments were applied were 100% field capacity was considered as control while 85%, 70%, 55%, 40%, 25% and 5% field capacities were taken as different drought levels. Effect of drought commenced at 40% field capacity and lower drought treatments as decrease in shoot and root fresh and dry weight, root length, leaf area and leaf area index and leaf firing percentage increased with severity of drought compared to 100% field capacity. Physiological parameters including water use efficiency (A/E), leaf water potential (ψleaf), stomatal conductance (gs), photosynthesis rate, cell membrane stability and total chlorophyll contents proved that this plant species can tolerate severe drought conditions. Positive correlation was found among most of the attributes but leaf temperature was negatively correlated with leaf water potential, photosynthesis rate, cell membrane stability, and chlorophyll contents. Moreover, regression analysis between various morphological and physiological attributes showed the predictive power of the model yielding significant results for leaf area and cell membrane stability (R2 = 0.74), root length and photosynthesis rate (R2 = 0.65), leaf temperature and chlorophyll contents (R2 = 0.43) and leaf area and leaf water potential (ψleaf) (R2 = 0.93).

Bio-stimulants are in excessive demand for the sustainable production of floriculture crops. The current investigation was designed to find out the effect of naturally occurring growth stimulant moringa leaf extract (MLE) on the growth, flowering, post-harvest life and corm production of two gladiolus cultivars (cvs.) ‘Rose Supreme’ and ‘White Prosperity’. The research trial was laid out in the factorial arrangement under randomized complete block design. Corms were grown in the open field under local climatic conditions of Faisalabad, Pakistan. Potential of exogenously applied (MLE; 30 times diluted) was evaluated. Treatments including spraying MLE at 3 leaves, 5 leaves, floral bud stage, one combination of these three stages relative to control with no foliar application. Application of natural bio-stimulant produced maximum height in both cvs. against T4. Both cvs. gave maximum stalk length in response to T4. The number of florets spike–1 found the maximum (13) in T1 compared to control T0 which yield (9) florets. Maximum vase life in sucrose solution (13.33 days) was exhibited by T1 for both cvs. while minimum (10 days) in T0. In cultivar comparison earlier spike emergence was observed in ‘White Prosperity’. In ‘Rose Supreme’ maximum corm weight was attained in response to T3 (43.43 g) while minimum (30.33 g) in T0.‘White Prosperity’ produced maximum weight (40.33 g) against T4 whereas minimum by control. The cultivar mean comparison showed the superiority of cormel diameter in ‘Rose Supreme’ (10.93 mm) than ‘White Prosperity’ (9.13 mm). In treatment comparison, T4 produced maximum diameter (12.04 mm) in ‘Rose Supreme’ moreover, T2 induced maximum (9.57 mm) diameter in ‘White Prosperity’.

The objective of the study was to perform micromorphological analyses of the secretory structures of leaves and stems of oil-bearing industrial plants from the Lamiaceae family such as lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha × piperita L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.), marjoram (Origanum majorana L., syn. Origanum dubium Boiss.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) using light microscope and scanning electron microscope. In addition, an estimation of the content of volatile substances in the plant species under study was performed using GC-MS, as well as the qualitative and quantitative analysis of essential oil, that is an important component in terms of the estimation of raw material applicability for use in the industry. In the epidermal cells of studied plants, 2 types of Lamiaceae-type glandular trichomes were identified: short- and long-stalked capitate glandular trichomes with single- and bicellular secretory capitulum, and peltate glandular trichomes with eight- and over a dozen-cell secretory capitulum. Capitate trichomes were densely distributed on the surface of the epidermis, while peltate trichomes were sparse, though regular, and were situated in depressions. Glandular trichomes were found more frequently on leaves than on stems. The cuticle of the abaxial of leaf was characterized in most cases by the occurrence of larger average diameter peltate trichomes compared to the cuticle of the adaxial side of leaf. Peppermint produced the largest structures accumulating essential oil on the leaves (average diameter of peltate trichomes – 78.48 µm on the adaxial side of leaf, up to 96.43 µm), while on the stem, the highest average diameter of the peltate trichomes was observed in sage (an average of 75.53 µm, up to 85.99 µm). The lemon balm was characterized by the presence of capitate and peltate trichomes with the smallest diameter (an average of 44.26 µm). Lemon balm was characterized by the greatest density of glandular trichomes compared to other plant species. Among the plants studied, the highest content of oil was noted in the case of thyme and peppermint (2.22% and 2.20% v/w, respectively), and the lowest in green parts of lemon balm (0.17% v/w). The isolated essential oils contained predominantly components from the groups of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, and it is the presence of those substances that determines the possibility of utilizing the plants studied for a variety of purposes.

Opis:
Sweet orange fruits were exposed to vapor heat treatment (50°C) in water bath for 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 min in plastic covered structure. The data were recorded on different physico chemical factors immediately after the storage and after seven days simulated marketing under ambient condition (20°C). Low temperature storage enhanced weight loss, surface pitting, disease incidence, total soluble solids accumulation, TSS/Acid ratio but decreased reducing sugars, acidity and ascorbic acid content. Chilling exposure up to 45 days had no significant effect on weight loss and TSS. However, increased weight loss (2.63%), TSS (11.75), TSS/Acid ratio (8.45 ºBrix), disease incidence (8.93%) and lowest reducing sugars (3.90) were noted in sweet orange exposed to chilling temperature for 75 days. Among the VHT durations, the highest weight loss (2.29%) was found in VHT for 0 min while the highest TSS (11.81 ºBrix), TSS/Acid ratio (8.10) and disease incidence (6.22%) and least reducing sugars (4.12%) were found in VHT 20 for min. Vapor heat treatment ranging from 5–10 min resulted in lowest weight loss (1.79%), TSS (10.81 ºBrix) TSS/Acid ratio (7.33), disease incidence (1.00%) and highest reducing sugars (4.75%) in sweet orange fruits. However, non-reducing sugars were least affected by both LTSs and VHTs. It is concluded that the chilling exposure (5°C) beyond 45 days aggravated the decline of fruit physio-chemical quality characteristics. Whereas, VHT with 5–10 min maintained the sweet orange fruit quality during simulated marketing; however, VHT of 15–20 min adversely affected the sweet orange fruit quality attributes.

Opis:
High carbonate content in soil negatively affect plant growth, because the availability of nutrients is restricted due to high pH. The present investigations were carried out to reveal possible alleviating effects of the exogenous root inoculation PGPRs on development and physiology of soilless-grown grapevines cultivated under alkaline stress in controlled glass house. pH of growth medium was increased from 7.5 to the values ranging from 7.9 (control) to 8.1 (A18) according to the bacterial inoculations by NaHCO3 supplementations. Bacteria inoculations did not result in statistically significant differences in pH values of growth media. The bacterial population density found in the rhizosphere of grapevines ranged from 6 × 108 CFU mL−1 (M-3) to 9 × 108 CFU mL−1 (Ca-637). The highest value of shoot thickness was obtained from Ca-637 (5.3 mm), followed by A18 (5.2 mm), while M3 did not significantly affected the shoot thickness. The greatest pruning residue per vine was obtained from A18 treatment (81.5 g), followed by Ca-637 (80.8 g) while the lowest value was determined in control. Vine yield was the greatest with A18 (1128 g) treatment and was followed by Ca 637 (1059 g). Considering the general observations, root inoculation of PGPRs A18 and Ca-637 may be recommended in enhancing bioremediation of alkali growth media.
